Abstract:We measured the static and dynamic (complex) shear viscosity of a single layer complex plasma by applying, respectively, a stationary and a periodically modulated shear stress induced by the light pressure of manipulating laser beams. Under static conditions the shear viscosity reproduced the numerically predicted shear rate dependence, the so called shear-thinning effect. Under oscillating shear both the magnitude and the ratio of the dissipative and elastic contributions to the complex viscosity show strong frequency dependence. Accompanying molecular dynamics simulations explain and support the experimental observations.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to study the shear viscosity of a single-layer complex plasma (dusty plasma) under both static and dynamic conditions. Specifically, the paper attempts to address the following key issues: 1. **Static Shear Viscosity**: - The paper measures static shear viscosity by applying different shear stresses and observes that viscosity decreases with increasing shear rate, a phenomenon known as shear thinning behavior. 2. **Dynamic Shear Viscosity**: - Under oscillatory shear conditions, the paper explores the frequency dependence of dynamic (complex) shear viscosity. As the excitation frequency increases, the system transitions from a viscous state to an elastic state, with both the dissipative and elastic parts of the viscosity showing strong frequency dependence. 3. **Experimental and Simulation Methods**: - Researchers use a combination of experimental measurements and molecular dynamics simulations to analyze the static and dynamic shear viscosity of a single-layer complex plasma in detail. The experimental data are supported by simulation results, and the primary influence of temperature effects on changes in shear viscosity can be ruled out. In summary, the paper mainly focuses on the response characteristics of a single-layer complex plasma under different shear conditions and reveals its non-Newtonian fluid behavior through experiments and theoretical calculations.
