Abstract:Dynamics of vortices in strongly type-II superconductors with strong disorder is investigated within the frustrated three-dimensional XY model. For two typical models byOlsson [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 077002 (2003)] and Kawamura [Phys. Rev. B 68, 220502 (R) (2003)], strong evidence for the finite temperature vortex glass transition in the unscreened limit is provided by performing large-scale dynamical simulations. The obtained correlation length exponents and the dynamic exponents in both models are different from each other and from those in the three-dimensional gauge glass model. In addition, a genuine continuous depinning transition is observed at zero temperature for both models. A scaling analysis for the thermal rounding of the depinning transition shows a non-Arrhenius type creep motion in the vortex glass phase, contrarily to the recent studies.

Abstract:Large scale Monte Carlo simulations are performed in order to clarify thermodynamic properties of vortex states of extremely type-II, layered superconductors. The first-order normal to superconductivity transition is observed accompanied by the melting of the flux-line lattice. If the magnetic field is applied parallel to the layer, there exists a critical field above which the melting becomes continuous. Dynamics of current-driven vortices in a random potential has also been investigated and it is found that for certain currents the moving Bragg glass melts first into moving smectic and then to liquid.

Abstract:Two-band superconductors exhibit a distinct phase characterized by two correlation lengths, one smaller and the other larger than the magnetic field penetration length. This regime was coined type-1.5 superconductivity, with several unconventional properties, such as vortex clustering. However, a fully microscopic solution for vortex clusters has remained challenging due to computational complexities beyond quasiclassical models. This work presents numerical solutions obtained in a fully self-consistent two-band Bogoliubov-de Gennes model. We show the presence of discrepant correlation lengths leading to vortex clustering in two-band superconductors.

Abstract:We report a microscopic derivation of two-component Ginzburg-Landau (GL) field theory and the conditions of its validity in two-band superconductors. We also investigate the conditions when microscopically derived or phenomenological GL models fail and one should resort to a microscopic description. We show that besides being directly applicable at elevated temperatures, a version of a minimal two-component GL theory in certain cases also gives accurate description of certain aspects of a two-band system even substantially far from $T_c$. This shows that two-component GL model can be used for addressing a wide range of questions in multiband systems, in particular vortex physics and magnetic response. We also argue that single Ginzburg-Landau parameter cannot in general characterize magnetic response of multiband systems.

Microscopic theory of weakly coupled superconducting multilayers in an external magnetic field

Abstract:We present the first fully microscopic, self-consistent, and self-contained theory of superconducting weakly coupled periodic multilayers with tunnel barriers in the presence of externally applied parallel magnetic fields, in the local Ginzburg-Landau regime. We solve a nontrivial mathematical problem of a microscopic derivation and exact minimization of the free-energy functional. In the thin-layer limit that corresponds to the domain of validity of the phenomenological Lawrence-Doniach model, our physical results strikingly contrast with those of our predecessors. In particular, we completely revise previous calculations of the lower critical field and refute the concept of a triangular Josephson vortex lattice. We show that Josephson vortices penetrate into all the barriers simultaneously and form peculiar structures that we term ''vortex planes''. We calculate the superheating field of the Meissner state and predict hysteresis in the magnetization. In the vortex state, the magnetization exhibits distinctive oscillatory behavior and jumps due to successive penetration of the vortex planes. We prove that the vortex-plane penetration and pinning by the edges of the sample cause the Fraunhofer pattern of the critical Josephson current. We calculate the critical temperature and the upper critical field of infinite (along the layers) multilayers. For finite multilayers, we predict a series of first-order phase transitions to the normal state and oscillations of the critical temperature versus the applied field. Finally, we discuss some theoretical and experimental implications of the obtained results. Abstract:Vortex dynamics in a type-II superconductor is systematically investigated by the influence functional method. The irrelevant fermionic degrees of freedom are integrated out and their effects on the dynamics are treated in terms of the vortex coordinate. When an isolated vortex is moving against its background, forces proportional to the first order of vortex velocity on the vortex are calculated within the present formulation. The total transverse force on the moving vortex is explicitly shown to be proportional to the superfluid number density and insensitive to impurities. Its equivalent expressions in terms of the Berry phase and the various summations of transitions between quasiparticle (hole) stares are discussed. At finite temperatures, due to the finite population of quasiparticle (hole) excitations above (below) the energy gap, there is a friction against vortex motion which diverges logarithmically in the low-frequency limit. Nonmagnetic impurities give rise to an additional friction from the core states which saturates to a value independent of the normal-state resistivity in the dirty limit. In this limit, the coupling to the electromagnetic field does not change the conclusions if charge neutrality in the superconductor is maintained. Macroscopic constraints on vortex dynamics by the second law of thermodynamics and by the fluctuation-dissipation theorems are also discussed. [S0163-1829(99)10129-2].

Abstract:Inspired by the recent experiments in monolayer iron-based superconductors, we theoretically investigate properties of a two-dimensional multiband superconductor, focusing on two aspects. First, for vortex bound states, the spatial anisotropy and positions of electron density peaks are associated with interband couplings. Second, even with inversion symmetry, there allows a Ising-type spin-orbit coupling, leading to the enhanced in-plane upper critical field.

Abstract:Nonmagnetic impurity scattering is known to shift up the Ginzburg–Landau parameter κ of a superconductor. In this case, when the system is initially in type I, it can change its magnetic response, crossing the intertype domain with κ ∼ 1 between the two standard superconductivity types and arriving at type II. In the present work we demonstrate that the impact of disorder can be much more profound in the presence of the multiband structure of the charge carrier states. In particular, when the band diffusivities differ from each other, the intertype domain tends to expand significantly, including points with κ ≫ 1 that belong to deep type-II in conventional single-band superconductors. Our finding sheds light on the nontrivial disorder effect and significantly complements earlier results on the enlargement of the intertype domain in clean multiband superconductors.

Abstract:Thermodynamics of type II superconductors in electromagnetic field based on the Ginzburg-Landau theory is presented. The Abrikosov flux lattice solution is derived using an expansion in a parameter characterizing the "distance" to the superconductor-normal phase transition line. The expansion allows a systematic improvement of the solution. The phase diagram of the vortex matter in magnetic field is determined in detail. In the presence of significant thermal fluctuations on the mesoscopic scale (for example, in high T-c materials) the vortex crystal melts into a vortex liquid. A quantitative theory of thermal fluctuations using the lowest Landau level approximation is given. It allows one to determine the melting line and discontinuities at melt, as well as important characteristics of the vortex liquid state. In the presence of quenched disorder (pinning) the vortex matter acquires certain "glassy" properties. The irreversibility line and static properties of the vortex glass state are studied using the "replica" method. Most of the analytical methods are introduced and presented in some detail. Various quantitative and qualitative features are compared to experiments in type II superconductors, although the use of a rather universal Ginzburg-Landau theory is not restricted to superconductivity and can be applied with certain adjustments to other physical systems, for example, rotating Bose-Einstein condensate.

Abstract:Superconductivity was observed in certain range of pressure and chemical composition in Weyl semimetals of both type I and type II (when the Dirac cone tilt parameter kappa > 1). Magnetic properties of these superconductors are studied on the basis of microscopic phonon-mediated pairing model. The Ginzburg-Landau effective theory for the order parameter is derived using the Gorkov approach and used to determine anisotropic coherence length, the penetration depth determining the Abrikosov parameter for a layered material and applied to recent extensive experiments on MoTe2. It is found that superconductivity is of second kind near the topological transition at kappa = 1. For a larger tilt parameter, superconductivity becomes first kind. For kappa < 1, the Abrikosov parameter also tends to be reduced, often crossing over to the first kind kappa For the superconductors of the second kind, the dependence of critical fields H-c2 and H-c1 on the tilt parameter. (governed by pressure) is compared with the experiments. Strength of thermal fluctuations is estimated and it is found that they are strong enough to cause Abrikosov vortex lattice melting near H-c2. The melting line is calculated and is consistent with experiments provided the fluctuations are three dimensional in the type-I phase (large pressure) and two dimensional in the type-II phase (small pressure).

Abstract:Coexistence of antiferromagnetic order with superconductivity in many families of newly discovered iron-based superconductors has renewed interest to this old problem. Due to competition between the two types of order, one can expect appearance of the antiferromagnetism inside the cores of the vortices generated by the external magnetic field. The structure of a vortex in type II superconductors holds significant importance from the theoretical and the application points of view. Here we consider the internal vortex structure in a two-band s± superconductor near a spin-density-wave instability. We treat the problem in a completely self-consistent manner within the quasiclassical Eilenberger formalism. We study the structure of the s± superconducting order and magnetic field-induced spin-density-wave order near an isolated vortex. We examine the effect of this spin-density-wave state inside the vortex cores on the local density of states.

Stability of fractional vortex states in a two-band mesoscopic superconductor

Abstract:We investigate the stability of noncomposite fractional vortex states in a mesoscopic two-band superconductor within the two-component Ginzburg-Landau model. Our analysis explicitly takes into account the relationship between the model parameters and microscopic material parameters, such as partial density of states, fermi velocities and elements of the electron-phonon coupling matrix. We have found that states with different phase winding number in each band (L1 not equal to L2) and fractional flux can exist in many different configurations, including rather unconventional ones where the dominating band carries larger winding number and states where |L1-L2| > 1. We present a detailed analysis of the stability of the observed vortex structures with respect to changing the microscopic parameters, showing that, in the weak coupling case, fractional vortex states can be assessed in essentially the whole range of temperatures and applied magnetic fields in which both bands are active. Finally, we propose an efficient way of increasing the range of parameters for which these fractional vortex states can be stabilized. In particular, our proposal allows for observation of fractional vortex structures in materials with stronger coupling, where those states are forbidden at a homogeneous field. This is accomplished with the help of the stray fields of a suitably prepared magnetic dot placed nearby the superconducting disk.

Abstract:We study THz-driven condensate dynamics in epitaxial thin films of MgB_{2}, a prototype two-band superconductor (SC) with weak interband coupling. The temperature and excitation density dependent dynamics follow the behavior predicted by the phenomenological bottleneck model for the single-gap SC, implying adiabatic coupling between the two condensates on the ps timescale. The amplitude of the THz-driven suppression of condensate density reveals an unexpected decrease in pair-breaking efficiency with increasing temperature-unlike in the case of optical excitation. The reduced pair-breaking efficiency of narrow-band THz pulses, displaying minimum near ≈0.7 T_{c}, is attributed to THz-driven, long-lived, nonthermal quasiparticle distribution, resulting in Eliashberg-type enhancement of superconductivity, competing with pair breaking.

Abstract:We study the in-plane critical magnetic field of two-dimensional Ising superconducting systems, and propose the microscopic theory for these systems with or without inversion symmetry. Protected by certain specific spin-orbit interaction which polarizes the electron spin to the out-of-plane direction, the in-plane critical fields largely surpass the Pauli limit and show remarkable upturn in the zero temperature limit. The impurity scattering and Rashba spin-orbit coupling, treated on equal-footing in the microscopic framework, both weaken the critical field but in qualitatively different manners. The microscopic theory is consistent with recent experimental results in stanene and Pb superconducting ultra-thin films.
Rotation of Triangular Vortex Lattice in the Two-Band Superconductor MgB2

Abstract:To identify the contributions of the multiband nature and the anisotropy of a microscopic electronic structure to a macroscopic vortex lattice morphology, we develop a method based on the Eilenberger theory near Hc2 combined with the first-principles band calculation to estimate the stable vortex lattice configuration. For a typical two-band superconductor MgB2, successive transitions of vortex lattice orientation that have been observed recently by small angle neutron scattering [Das, et al.: Phys. Rev. Lett. 108 (2012) 167001] are explained by the characteristic field-dependence of twoband superconductivity and the competition of sixfold anisotropy between the sigma- and pi-bands. The reentrant transition at low temperature reflects the Fermi velocity anisotropy of the sigma-band.

Abstract:A metastable homogeneous state exists down to zero temperature in systems of repelling vortices. A zero- "fluctuation-temperature" liquid state therefore serves as a (pseudo) "fixed point" controlling the properties of vortex liquid below and even around melting point. Based on this picture for the vortex phase we apply the Borel-Pade resummation technique to develop a quantitative theory of the vortex liquid for the lowest-Landau-level Ginzburg-Landau model in type-II superconductors. While on the solid phase, there exists a superheat solid phase which ends at the spinodal line. The picture for the vortex phase is supported by an exactly solvable large N Ginzburg-Landau model in a magnetic field and has been recently confirmed by the experiments. The applicability of the lowest-Landau-level model is discussed and corrections due to higher levels are calculated. The melting line is located based on the quantitative theory for the description of the vortex solid and the vortex liquid. Magnetization, entropy, and specific heat jumps along the melting line are calculated. The theoretical results explain quantitatively very well the experimental data on the high-T-c cuprates YBa2Cu3O7, DyBCO, low-T-c material (K, Ba) BiO3, and also Monte Carlo simulation results.
