Abstract:We show that every pseudo hoop satisfies the Riesz Decomposition Property. We visualize basic pseudo hoops by functions on a linearly ordered set. Finally, we study normal-valued basic pseudo hoops giving a countable base of equations for them.

Abstract:Pseudo-splines of type I were introduced in [I. Daubechies, B. Han, A. Ron, Z. Shen, Framelets: MRA-based constructions of wavelet frames, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 14 (2003) 1–46] and [Selenick, Smooth wavelet tight frames with zero moments, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 10 (2000) 163–181] and type II were introduced in [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104]. Both types of pseudo-splines provide a rich family of refinable functions with B-splines, interpolatory refinable functions and refinable functions with orthonormal shifts as special examples. In [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104], Dong and Shen gave a regularity analysis of pseudo-splines of both types. The key to regularity analysis is Proposition 3.2 in [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104], which also appeared in [A. Cohen, J.P. Conze, Régularité des bases d'ondelettes et mesures ergodiques, Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana 8 (1992) 351–365] and [I. Daubechies, Ten Lectures on Wavelets, CBMS-NSF Series in Applied Mathematics, SIAM, Philadelphia, 1992] for the case l=N−1. In this note, we will give a new insight into this proposition.

Abstract:Pocrims and suitable specialisations thereof are structures that provide the natural algebraic semantics for a minimal affine logic and its extensions. Hoops comprise a special class of pocrims that provide algebraic semantics for what we view as an intuitionistic analogue of the classical multi-valued Łukasiewicz logic. We present some contributions to the theory of these algebraic structures. We give a new proof that the class of hoops is a variety. We use a new indirect method to establish several important identities in the theory of hoops: in particular, we prove that the double negation mapping in a hoop is a homormorphism. This leads to an investigation of algebraic analogues of the various double negation translations that are well-known from proof theory. We give an algebraic framework for studying the semantics of double negation translations and use it to prove new results about the applicability of the double negation translations due to Gentzen and Glivenko.

Essential normality of quotient submodules over strongly pseudoconvex finite manifolds

Abstract:We investigate the $p$-essential normality of Hilbert quotient submodules on a relatively compact smooth strongly pseudoconvex domain in a complex manifold satisfying Property (S). For analytic subvarieties that have compact singularities and transversely intersect the strongly pseudoconvex boundary, we prove that the corresponding Bergman-Sobolev quotient submodules are $p$-essentially normal whenever $p$ exceeds the dimension of the noncompact part of the analytic subvarieties. As a consequence, we partially confirm the geometric Arveson-Douglas Conjecture and resolve an open problem regarding the trace-class antisymmetric sum of truncated Toeplitz operators within a broader context. Moreover, we provide applications in $K$-homology and geometric invariant theory.

Abstract:The decomposition of all pseudo-uninorms with continuous underlying functions, defined on the unit interval, via Clifford's ordinal sum is described. It is shown that each such pseudo-uninorm can be decomposed into representable and trivial semigroups, and special semigroups defined on two points, where the corresponding semigroup operation is the projection to one of the coordinates. Linear orders, for which the ordinal sum of such semigroups yields a pseudo-uninorm, are also characterized.

Abstract:In this paper, we give an estimate of sub-Laplacian of Riemannian distance functions in pseudo-Hermitian geometry which plays a similar role as Laplacian comparison theorem in Riemannian geometry, and deduce a prior horizontal gradient estimate of pseudo-harmonic maps from pseudo-Hermitian manifolds to regular balls of Riemannian manifolds. As an application, Liouville theorem is established under the conditions of nonnegative pseudo-Hermitian Ricci curvature and vanishing pseudo-Hermitian torsion. Moreover, we obtain the existence of pseudo-harmonic maps from complete noncompact pseudo-Hermitian manifolds to regular balls of Riemannian manifolds.

Abstract:Beurling's classical theorem gives a complete characterization of all invariant subspaces in the Hardy space H-2(D). To generalize the theorem to higher dimensions, one is naturally led to determining the structure of each unitary equivalence (resp. similarity) class. This, in turn, requires finding podal (resp. s-podal) points in unitary (resp. similarity) orbits. In this note, we find that H-outer (resp. G-outer) functions play an important role in finding podal (resp. s-podal) points. By the methods developed in this note, we can assess when a unitary (resp. similarity) orbit contains a podal (resp. an s-podal) point, and hence provide examples of orbits without such points.

Abstract:For each value of $p$ such that $0<p<1$, we give a specific example of two functions in the Hardy space $H^p$ and in the Bergman space $A^p$ that do not satisfy the triangle inequality. For Hardy spaces, this provides a much simpler proof than the one due to Livingston that involves abstract functional analysis arguments and an approximation theorem. For Bergman spaces, we have not been able to locate any examples or proofs in the existing literature.

Abstract:Lorentzian polynomials, recently introduced by Brändén and Huh, generalize the notion of log-concavity of sequences to homogeneous polynomials whose supports are integer points of generalized permutahedra. Brändén and Huh show that normalizations of polynomials equaling integer point transforms of generalized permutahedra are Lorentzian; moreover, normalizations of certain projections of integer point transforms of generalized permutahedra with zero-one vertices are also Lorentzian. Taking this polytopal perspective further, we show that normalizations of certain projections of integer point transforms of flow polytopes (which, before projection, are not Lorentzian), are also Lorentzian.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that under a mild condition, a principal submodule of the Bergman module on a bounded strongly pseudoconvex domain with smooth boundary in Cn is p-essentially normal for all p>n. This improves a previous result by the first author and K. Wang, in which it was shown that any polynomial-generated principal submodule of the Bergman module on the unit ball Bn is p-essentially normal for all p>n. As a consequence, we show that the submodule of La2(Bn) consisting of functions vanishing on an analytic subset of pure codimension 1 is p-essentially normal for all p>n.

Abstract:The second named author and David Kalaj introduced a pseudometric on any domain in the real Euclidean space $\mathbb R^n$, $n\ge 3$, defined in terms of conformal harmonic discs, by analogy with Kobayashi's pseudometric on complex manifolds, which is defined in terms of holomorphic discs. They showed that on the unit ball of $\mathbb R^n$, the minimal metric coincides with the classical Beltrami-Cayley-Klein metric, one of the models of hyperbolic geometry. In the present paper we investigate properties of the minimal pseudometric and give sufficient conditions for a domain to be (complete) hyperbolic, meaning that the minimal pseudometric is a (complete) metric. We show in particular that a convex domain is complete hyperbolic if and only if it does not contain any affine 2-planes. One of our main results is that a domain with a negative minimal plurisubharmonic exhaustion function is hyperbolic, and a bounded strongly minimally convex domain is complete hyperbolic. We also prove a localization theorem for the minimal pseudometric.

Abstract:Ioffe's criterion and various reformulations of it have become a~standard tool in proving theorems guaranteeing various regularity properties such as metric regularity, i.e., the openness with a linear rate around the reference point, of a~(set-valued) mapping. We derive an analogue of it guaranteeing the almost openness with a linear rate of mappings acting in incomplete spaces and having non-closed graphs, in general. The main tool used is an approximate version of Ekeland's variational principle for a function that is not necessarily lower semi-continuous and is defined on an abstract (possibly incomplete) space. Further, we focus on the stability of this property under additive single-valued and set-valued perturbations.

Outer Lipschitz Classification of Normal Pairs of Hölder Triangles

Abstract:A normal pair of Hölder triangles is the union of two normally embedded Hölder triangles satisfying some natural conditions on the tangency orders of their boundary arcs. It is a special case of a surface germ, a germ at the origin of a two-dimensional closed semialgebraic (or, more general, definable in a polynomially bounded o-minimal structure) subset of $R^n$. Classification of normal pairs considered in this paper is a step towards outer Lipschitz classification of definable surface germs. In the paper \cite{BG} we introduced a combinatorial invariant of the outer Lipschitz equivalence class of normal pairs, called $\sigma\tau$-pizza, and conjectured that it is complete: two normal pairs of Hölder triangles with the same $\sigma\tau$-pizzas are outer Lipschitz equivalent. In this paper we prove that conjecture and define realizability conditions for the $\sigma\tau$-pizza invariant. Moreover, only one of the two pizzas in the $\sigma\tau$-pizza invariant, together with some admissible permutations related to $\sigma$ and $\tau$, is sufficient for the existence and uniqueness, up to outer Lipschitz equivalence, of a normal pair of Hölder triangles.

Abstract:The starting point of this paper is the computation of minimal hyperbolic polynomials of duals of cones arising from chordal sparsity patterns. From that, we investigate the relation between ranks of homogeneous cones and their minimal polynomials. Along the way, we answer in the negative a question posed in an earlier paper and show examples of homogeneous cones that cannot be realized as rank-one generated (ROG) hyperbolicity cones.

Hyperplanes Avoiding Problem and Integer Points Counting in Polyhedra

Abstract:In our work, we consider the problem of computing a vector $x \in Z^n$ of minimum $\|\cdot\|_p$-norm such that $a^\top x \not= a_0$, for any vector $(a,a_0)$ from a given subset of $Z^n$ of size $m$. In other words, we search for a vector of minimum norm that avoids a given finite set of hyperplanes, which is natural to call as the $\textit{Hyperplanes Avoiding Problem}$. This problem naturally appears as a subproblem in Barvinok-type algorithms for counting integer points in polyhedra. More precisely, it appears when one needs to evaluate certain rational generating functions in an avoidable critical point. We show that: 1) With respect to $\|\cdot\|_1$, the problem admits a feasible solution $x$ with $\|x\|_1 \leq (m+n)/2$, and show that such solution can be constructed by a deterministic polynomial-time algorithm with $O(n \cdot m)$ operations. Moreover, this inequality is the best possible. This is a significant improvement over the previous randomized algorithm, which computes $x$ with a guaranty $\|x\|_{1} \leq n \cdot m$. The original approach of A.~Barvinok can guarantee only $\|x\|_1 = O\bigl((n \cdot m)^n\bigr)$; 2) The problem is NP-hard with respect to any norm $\|\cdot\|_p$, for $p \in \bigl(R_{\geq 1} \cup \{\infty\}\bigr)$. 3) As an application, we show that the problem to count integer points in a polytope $P = \{x \in R^n \colon A x \leq b\}$, for given $A \in Z^{m \times n}$ and $b \in Q^m$, can be solved by an algorithm with $O\bigl(\nu^2 \cdot n^3 \cdot \Delta^3 \bigr)$ operations, where $\nu$ is the maximum size of a normal fan triangulation of $P$, and $\Delta$ is the maximum value of rank-order subdeterminants of $A$. It refines the previous state-of-the-art $O\bigl(\nu^2 \cdot n^4 \cdot \Delta^3\bigr)$-time algorithm.

Characterizing the integer points in 2-decomposable polyhedra by closedness under operations

Abstract:Characterizing the solution sets in a problem by closedness under operations is recognized as one of the key aspects of algorithm development, especially in constraint satisfaction. An example from the Boolean satisfiability problem is that the solution set of a Horn conjunctive normal form (CNF) is closed under the minimum operation, and this property implies that minimizing a nonnegative linear function over a Horn CNF can be done in polynomial time. In this paper, we focus on the set of integer points (vectors) in a polyhedron, and study the relation between these sets and closedness under operations from the viewpoint of 2-decomposability. By adding further conditions to the 2-decomposable polyhedra, we show that important classes of sets of integer vectors in polyhedra are characterized by 2-decomposability and closedness under certain operations, and in some classes, by closedness under operations alone. The most prominent result we show is that the set of integer vectors in a unit-two-variable-per-inequality polyhedron can be characterized by closedness under the median and directed discrete midpoint operations, each of these operations was independently considered in constraint satisfaction and discrete convex analysis.

Value Distributions of Perfect Nonlinear Functions

Abstract:In this paper, we study the value distributions of perfect nonlinear functions, i.e., we investigate the sizes of image and preimage sets. Using purely combinatorial tools, we develop a framework that deals with perfect nonlinear functions in the most general setting, generalizing several results that were achieved under specific constraints. For the particularly interesting elementary abelian case, we derive several new strong conditions and classification results on the value distributions. Moreover, we show that most of the classical constructions of perfect nonlinear functions have very specific value distributions, in the sense that they are almost balanced. Consequently, we completely determine the possible value distributions of vectorial Boolean bent functions with output dimension at most 4. Finally, using the discrete Fourier transform, we show that in some cases value distributions can be used to determine whether a given function is perfect nonlinear, or to decide whether given perfect nonlinear functions are equivalent.

Abstract:A harmonic mapping $f=h+\overline{g}$ in $\mathbb{D}$ is $\varphi$-normal if $f^{\#}(z)=\mathcal{O}(|\varphi(z)|), \text{ as } |z|\to 1^-,$ where $f^{\#}(z)={(|h'(z)|+|g'(z)|)}/{(1+|f(z)|^2)}.$ In this paper, we establish several sufficient conditions for harmonic mappings to be $\varphi$-normal. We also extend the five-point theorem of Lappan for $\varphi$-normal harmonic mappings.

Abstract:Pseudo-cones are a class of unbounded closed convex sets, not containing the origin. They admit a kind of polarity, called copolarity. With this, they can be considered as a counterpart to convex bodies containing the origin in the interior. The purpose of the following is to study this analogy in greater detail. We supplement the investigation of copolarity, considering, for example, conjugate faces. Then we deal with the question suggested by Minkowski's theorem, asking which measures are surface area measures of pseudo-cones with given recession cone. We provide a sufficient condition for possibly infinite measures and a special class of pseudo-cones.
