Abstract:The idea of glue clusters, i.e. short-range correlations in the quark-gluon plasma close to freeze-out, is used to estimate the width of balance functions in momentum space. A good agreement is found with the recent measurements of STAR collaboration for central $Au-Au$ collisions.

Abstract:Balance functions have been measured in terms of relative pseudorapidity ($\Delta \eta$) for charged particle pairs at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) from Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 7.7 GeV to 200 GeV using the STAR detector. These results are compared with balance functions measured at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) from Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV by the ALICE Collaboration. The width of the balance function decreases as the collisions become more central and as the beam energy is increased. In contrast, the widths of the balance functions calculated using shuffled events show little dependence on centrality or beam energy and are larger than the observed widths. Balance function widths calculated using events generated by UrQMD are wider than the measured widths in central collisions and show little centrality dependence. The measured widths of the balance functions in central collisions are consistent with the delayed hadronization of a deconfined quark gluon plasma (QGP). The narrowing of the balance function in central collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 7.7 GeV implies that a QGP is still being created at this relatively low energy.

Abstract:The charge and baryon balance functions are studied in the coalescence hadronization mechanism of quark-gluon plasma. Assuming that in the plasma phase the $q\bar{q}$ pairs form uncorrelated clusters whose decay is also uncorrelated, one can understand the observed small width of the charge balance function in the Gaussian approximation. The coalescence model predicts even smaller width of the baryon-antibaryon balance function: $\sigma_{B\bar{B}}/\sigma_{+-}= \sqrt{2/3}$.

Charm balance function in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:We calculate the balance function for charm in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The distribution of pairs of charm-anticharm quarks produced in hard processes in the early stages of the nucleus-nucleus collision evolves in the dense fireball formed in the collision. The evolution of the dense matter is described using a relativistic viscous hydrodynamic model and the quark diffusion with a Langevin equation. The evolution of the charm quark balance function from the formation of the charm-anticharm pair up to the freeze-out traces the partial thermalization of the heavy quarks in the dense matter. For the balance function in azimuthal angle we reproduce the collimation effect due to the transverse flow. The evolution in rapidity shows the thermalization of the longitudinal velocity of the quark in the fluid. We provide predictions for the one and two-dimensional balance functions for $D^0$-$\bar{D^0}$ mesons produced in ultarelativistic Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV. The shape of the charm balance function in relative rapidity is sensitive to the rescattering of heavy quarks in the early stages of the collision, while the shape of the balance function in azimuthal angle is sensitive to the rescattering in the latter stages.

Abstract:Balance functions have been measured for charged particle pairs, identified charged pion pairs, and identified charged kaon pairs in Au+Au, d+Au, and p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider using the STAR detector. These balance functions are presented in terms of relative pseudorapidity, $\Delta \eta$, relative rapidity, $\Delta y$, relative azimuthal angle, $\Delta \phi$, and invariant relative momentum, $q_{\rm inv}$. In addition, balance functions are shown in terms of the three components of $q_{\rm inv}$: $q_{\rm long}$, $q_{\rm out}$, and $q_{\rm side}$. For charged particle pairs, the width of the balance function in terms of $\Delta \eta$ scales smoothly with the number of participating nucleons, while HIJING and UrQMD model calculations show no dependence on centrality or system size. For charged particle and charged pion pairs, the balance functions widths in terms of $\Delta \eta$ and $\Delta y$ are narrower in central Au+Au collisions than in peripheral collisions. The width for central collisions is consistent with thermal blast-wave models where the balancing charges are highly correlated in coordinate space at breakup. This strong correlation might be explained either by delayed hadronization or by limited diffusion during the reaction. Furthermore, the narrowing trend is consistent with the lower kinetic temperatures inherent to more central collisions. In contrast, the width of the balance function for charged kaon pairs in terms of $\Delta y$ shows little centrality dependence, which may signal a different production mechanism for kaons. The widths of the balance functions for charged pions and kaons in terms of $q_{\rm inv}$ narrow in central collisions compared to peripheral collisions, which may be driven by the change in the kinetic temperature.
Long-range collectivity in small collision-systems with two- and four-particle correlations @ STAR

Abstract:New STAR differential and integral v{2,3} measurements that explicitly account for non-flow contributions are reported for p/d/3He+Au, collisions at Roots=200 GeV. The measurements, which leverage the two-particle correlators for p/d/3He+Au and minimum-bias p+p collisions in tandem with three well-established methods of non-flow subtraction, are observed to be method-independent. For comparable multiplicities, they further indicate system-independent v2{2} and v3{2} values that are consistent with the critical role of both size (N{ch}) and the subnucleonic-fluctuations-driven eccentricities e{2,3} but are inconsistent with the notion of shape engineering in p/d/3He+Au collisions. The scaling function derived from the measurements, confirm the important role of final-state effects across a broad spectrum of collision-system sizes and energies and suggests an increase in eta/s(T,muB) for small collision-systems.

The measured widths of the balance functions in central collisions are consistent with the delayed hadronization of a deconfined quark gluon plasma (QGP). The narrowing of the balance function in central collisions at root s(NN) = 7.7 GeV implies that a QGP is still being created at this relatively low energy.

Abstract:The notion of charge balance function, originally designed to study the evolution of charge production in heavy-ion collisions, is extended to consider quark flavor balancing. This extension is considered based on simulations performed with the PYTHIA 8 event generator in the context of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13.6$ TeV but can be trivially applied to any other scenario and implemented in measurements of correlated particle production in pp, pA, and AA collisions at colliders. Correlation of selected flavor balancing pairs are examined as function of the produced charged particle multiplicity. One finds that the amplitude of the correlations increases monotonically with the number of balanced flavors and the actual flavor content of correlated particles.

Abstract:Mixed species charge and baryon balance functions are computed based on proton--proton (pp) collisions simulated with the PYTHIA8 model. Simulations are performed with selected values of the collision energy $\sqrt{s}$ and the Monash tune and the Ropes and Shoving modes of PYTHIA8 to explore whether such measurements provide useful new information and constraints on mechanisms of particle production in pp collisions. Charge balance functions are studied based on mixed pairs of pions, kaons, and protons, whereas baryon balance functions are computed for mixed low mass strange and non-strange baryons. Both charge and baryon balance functions of mixed particle pairs feature shapes and amplitudes that sensitively depend on the particle considered owing largely to the particle production mechanisms implemented in PYTHIA. The evolution of balance functions integrals with the longitudinal width of the acceptance are presented and one finds that sums of such integrals for a given reference particle obey expected sum rules for both charge and baryon balance functions. Additionally, both types of balance functions are found to evolve in shape and amplitude with increasing collision energy $\sqrt{s}$ and the PYTHIA tunes considered.

Abstract:The balance function has been proposed to `clock' hadronization by measuring the charge-dependent correlation length on rapidity. According to the proposal a narrowed balance function would imply reduced hadron diffusion time and therefore delayed hadronization due to a long-lived prehadronic state, a quark-gluon plasma or QGP. I examine this chain of argument in the context of hadronization and rescattering. I then consider the algebraic structure of the balance function and its systematic dependence on the charge correlation length on rapidity. I conclude that the width of the balance function cannot determine a time interval from hadronization to kinetic decoupling, nor can the width determine the existence or temporal extent of a QGP.

Abstract:It is known that resonance decays influence the shape of the charge-balance functions measured in hadronic collisions. That is reflected in their rapidity and azimuthal widths and the integral, and therefore has consequences for different model interpretations. In this paper, we show that the contribution from neutral resonance decays can be removed from the balance function in an analytical way, and test the performance of the removal procedure with PYTHIA events. Prospects for applications of the procedure to real data analysis of balance functions are also discussed.

Abstract:The gold--gold collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7$ and $11.5$GeV are simulated within the PHSD transport model. In each collision event, the spectator nucleons are separated and the fluidization procedure for the participants is performed. The local velocities are determined in the Landau frame and the kinematic and thermal vorticity fields are evaluated. We analyze the thermodynamic properties of the cells where $\Lambda$s and $\overline{\Lambda}$s were born or had their last interaction. Such cells contribute to the formation of the observed global polarization of hyperons induced by the thermal vorticity of the medium. The $\overline{\Lambda}$ polarization signal is found to be mainly determined by hot, dense, and highly vortical cells at the earlier stage of the collision, whereas the $\Lambda$ polarization signal is accumulated over the longer time and includes cells with lower vorticity. The calculated global polarizations for both $\Lambda$s and $\overline{\Lambda}$s agree well with the experimental finding by the STAR collaboration at energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=11.5$GeV. For collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7$GeV, we can reproduce the STAR data for $\Lambda$ hyperons, but significantly underpredict the observed global polarization of $\overline{\Lambda}$. Furthermore, we consider the centrality dependence of the hyperon polarization in collisions at 7.7GeV. It increases with an increase of centrality, reaches a maximum at 65--75%, and then starts decreasing rapidly for peripheral collisions.

Abstract:We present an analysis of the heavy quark structure functions from the kt factorization scheme, using unifying the color dipole picture and double asymptotic scaling approaches at small x . The gluon distribution is obtained from the Golec-Biernat-Wüsthoff and Bartels, Golec-Biernat and Kowalski models. The main elements are based on the color dipole picture and the generalized double asymptotic scaling approach for usual parton distribution functions. The comparisons with the HERA data are made and predictions for the proposed LHeC and FCC-he colliders are also provided in a wide range of the transverse separation r . In particular, the ratio Rh=FLh/F2h,h=c,b,t is well described by the dipole models and is sensitive to the collider energies from HERA until FCC-he. We derive correlated bounds on the ratio F2c/F2 and F2b/F2 and compared them with the BGK and impact-parameter dependent saturation models. The uncertainties are due to the renormalization and factorization scales at large and low r values. Abstract:Anisotropy scaling functions derived from comprehensive measurements of transverse momentum- and centrality-dependent anisotropy coefficients $v_2(p_T,\text{cent})$ and $v_3(p_T,\text{cent})$ in Pb+Pb collisions at 5.02 and 2.76 TeV, Xe+Xe collisions at 5.44 TeV and Au+Au collisions at 0.2 TeV, offer new insights into the `ultra-central flow puzzle.' These functions integrate diverse measurements into a single curve, clarifying anisotropy attenuation throughout the entire $p_T$ and centrality range. They reveal the influence of initial-state eccentricities ($\varepsilon_{n}$), dimensionless size ($\mathbb{R}$), radial flow, viscous correction to the thermal distribution function ($\delta_f$), the medium's stopping power ($\Hat{q}$), and specific shear viscosity ($\eta/s$) on the observed anisotropies. This analysis not only enhances understanding of transport coefficients but also provides crucial constraints on nuclear deformation.

Abstract:Theoretical models suggest that the Quantum Chromo-Dynamics (QCD) phase diagram has a critical point demarcating the order of transition between the two phases: the hadron gas, in which the quarks are confined and the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). The central goal of the experiments with relativistic heavy-ion collisions is to create and study such form of matter called the QGP and understand the QCD phase diagram. The STAR (Solenoidal Tracker At RHIC) detector is pertinent for the RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) energy scan program where we plan to explore this exciting physics possibility using heavy-ion collisions at various center of mass energies. A first test run with Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 9.2 GeV took place in early 2008. We present the recent STAR results from this run of the identified particles (pion, kaon and proton) transverse momentum spectra and ratios. Also we shall present and discuss the results of the azimuthal anisotropy parameters ($v_{1}$, $v_{2}$) along with the pion interferometry measurements. These recent results from Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 9.2 GeV are compared with other SPS and RHIC measurements.
Azimuthal Anisotropy Scaling Functions for Identified Particle and Anti-Particle Species across Beam Energies: Insights into Baryon Junction Effects

Abstract:This study investigates the beam energy dependence of azimuthal anisotropy scaling functions for mesons and baryons in Pb+Pb and Au+Au collisions, spanning $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ from 7.7 GeV to 5.02 TeV. Scaling functions were derived from species-dependent $v_2(p_T, \text{cent})$ measurements to explore the interplay between radial flow, hadronic re-scattering, and baryon junction effects. The resulting scaling functions unify the anisotropy data across different species, revealing the underlying collective behavior. Results demonstrate that baryon junctions significantly enhance baryon $v_n$ at low $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$, where the baryon chemical potential ($\mu_B$) is large, leading to a substantial baryon--anti-baryon anisotropy difference that diminishes with increasing $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$. The non-monotonic behavior observed in the specific shear viscosity ($\eta/s$) and the radial flow parameters for anti-baryons suggests a change in the system's expansion dynamics near $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 39$ GeV, potentially influenced by the critical point of the QCD phase diagram, as well as the combined effects of baryon junctions, hadronic re-scattering, and properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). These findings provide new constraints and insights into baryon transport, the influence of baryon junction contributions, and the equation of state (EOS) and transport coefficients for baryon-rich matter.
