Abstract:We use Euler systems to prove the Gras conjecture for groups generated by Stark units in global function fields. The techniques applied here are classical and go back to Thaine, Kolyvagin and Rubin. We obtain our Euler systems from the torsion points of sign-normalized Drinfel'd modules.

Abstract:We study the problem of determining the groups that can arise as the torsion subgroup of an elliptic curve over a fixed quadratic field, building on work of Kamienny-Najman, Krumm, and Trbović. By employing techniques to study rational points on curves developed by Bruin and Stoll, we determine the possible torsion subgroups of elliptic curves over quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ for all squarefree $d$ with $|d| < 800$, improving on the previously known range of $-5 < d < 26$. We use our computations to study the validity of a conjecture of Granville concerning how many twists of a given hyperelliptic curve admit a nontrivial rational point.

Brumer-Stark Units and Explicit Class Field Theory

Abstract:Let $F$ be a totally real field of degree $n$ and $p$ an odd prime. We prove the $p$-part of the integral Gross--Stark conjecture for the Brumer--Stark $p$-units living in CM abelian extensions of $F$. In previous work, the first author showed that such a result implies an exact $p$-adic analytic formula for these Brumer--Stark units up to a bounded root of unity error, including a ``real multiplication'' analogue of Shimura's celebrated reciprocity law from the theory of Complex Multiplication. In this paper we show that the Brumer--Stark units, along with $n-1$ other easily described elements (these are simply square roots of certain elements of $F$) generate the maximal abelian extension of $F$. We therefore obtain an unconditional construction of the maximal abelian extension of any totally real field, albeit one that involves $p$-adic integration for infinitely many primes $p$. Our method of proof of the integral Gross--Stark conjecture is a generalization of our previous work on the Brumer--Stark conjecture. We apply Ribet's method in the context of group ring valued Hilbert modular forms. A key new construction here is the definition of a Galois module $\nabla_{\!\sL}$ that incorporates an integral version of the Greenberg--Stevens $\sL$-invariant into the theory of Ritter--Weiss modules. This allows for the reinterpretation of Gross's conjecture as the vanishing of the Fitting ideal of $\nabla_{\!\sL}$. This vanishing is obtained by constructing a quotient of $\nabla_{\!\sL}$ whose Fitting ideal vanishes using the Galois representations associated to cuspidal Hilbert modular forms..

Abstract:We give a dynamical proof of a result of Masser and Zannier [MZ2, MZ3] about torsion points on the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Our methods also treat points of small height. A key ingredient is the arithmetic equidistribution theorem on $\mathbb{P}^1$ of Baker-Rumely, Chambert-Loir, and Favre-Rivera-Letelier. Torsion points on the elliptic curve coincide with preperiodic points for the degree-4 Lattes family of rational functions. Our main new results concern properties of the bifurcation measures for this Lattes family associated to marked points.
On obstructions to the Euler system method for Rankin-Selberg convolutions

Abstract:To apply the Euler system method to a $p$-adic Galois representation $T$, one needs the existence of a $\sigma \in G_{\mathbb{Q}(\mu_{p^{\infty}})}$ such that $V/(\sigma-1)V$ is free of rank one over the coefficient ring: we say that such a $\sigma$ is an Euler-suitable element for $V$. Given a non-CM classical newform $f$ of weight $k \geq 2$ and character $\chi$, a classical newform $g$ of weight $1$ and character $\psi$, and a prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}$ of residue characteristic $p$ of a sufficiently large number field, we consider the situation where $V=V_{f,g,\mathfrak{p}}$ is the tensor product of the $\mathfrak{p}$-adic representations attached to $f$ and $g$. D. Loeffler asked the following question: is is true that if $\chi\psi \neq 1$, then there is an Euler-suitable element for $V_{f,g,\mathfrak{p}}$ for all but finitely many $\mathfrak{p}$? He gave a positive answer when $f,g$ had coprime conductors. We give several weaker sufficient conditions to answer this question in the affirmative. As an application, we remove some of the technical assumptions in the version of the Bloch-Kato Conjecture proved in

Euler systems for conjugate-symplectic motives

Abstract:Let $\rho$ be a conjugate-symplectic, geometric representation of the Galois group of a CM field. Under the assumption that $\rho$ is automorphic, even-dimensional, and of minimal regular Hodge--Tate type, we construct an Euler system for $\rho$ in the sense of forthcoming work of Jetchev--Nekovar--Skinner. The construction is based on Theta cycles as introduced in a previous paper, following works of Kudla and Liu on arithmetic theta series on unitary Shimura varieties; it relies on a certain modularity hypothesis for those theta series. Under some ordinariness assumptions, one can attach to $\rho$ a p-adic L-function. By recent results of Liu and the author, and the theory of Jetchev--Nekovar--Skinner, we deduce the following (unconditional) result under mild assumptions: if the p-adic L-function of $\rho$ vanishes to order 1 at the centre, then the Selmer group of $\rho$ has rank 1, generated by the class of an algebraic cycle. This confirms a case of the p-adic Beilinson--Bloch--Kato conjecture.

On the adjoint Selmer groups of semi-stable elliptic curves and Flach's zeta elements

Abstract:We explicitly construct the rank one primitive Stark (equivalently, Kolyvagin) system extending a constant multiple of Flach's zeta elements for semi-stable elliptic curves. As its arithmetic applications, we obtain the equivalence between a specific behavior of the Stark system and the minimal modularity lifting theorem, and we also discuss the cyclicity of the adjoint Selmer groups. This Stark system construction yields a more refined interpretation of the collection of Flach's zeta elements than the "geometric Euler system" approach due to Flach, Wiles, Mazur, and Weston.

On Converse Theorems for Hilbert Modular Forms Assuming Unramified Twists

Abstract:We prove two results on converse theorems for Hilbert modular forms over totally real fields of degree $r>1$. The first result recovers a Hilbert modular form (of some level) from an $L$-series satisfying functional equations twisted by all the unramified Hecke characters. The second result assumes both the 'unramified' functional equations and an Euler product, and recovers a Hilbert modular form of the expected level predicted by the shape of the functional equations. Our result generalizes the current converse theorems for $\mathrm{GL}_2$ in the case of Hilbert modular forms in that we completely remove the assumptions on ramified twists.

Abstract:We extend the Brauer-Siegel theorem to new families of number fields, both in the classical setting of asymptotically bad families and in the more general framework due to Tsfasman and Vlăduţ of asymptotically exact families. We introduce a notion of Galois complexity for extensions of number fields, and show that the generalized Brauer-Siegel theorem, as conjectured by Tsfasman and Vlăduţ, holds for families in which the complexity does not grow too fast. This allows to unify and extend all previously known results. The crucial step in our work is the proof of a new version -- stated in terms of our Galois complexity -- of a fundamental principle due to Stark descending exceptional zeroes of zeta functions down to quadratic number fields. Among the hitherto unknown cases we are able to treat are the families of number fields contained in the solvable Galois closure of a given number field.

Abstract:In this paper we set up a general Kolyvagin system machinery for Euler systems of rank r (in the sense of Perrin-Riou) associated to a large class of Galois representations, building on our previous work on Kolyvagin systems of Rubin-Stark units and generalizing the results of Kato, Rubin and Perrin-Riou. Our machinery produces a bound on the size of the classical Selmer group attached to a Galoys representation T (that satisfies certain technical hypotheses) in terms of a certain r \times r determinant; a bound which remarkably goes hand in hand with Bloch-Kato conjectures. At the end, we present an application based on a conjecture of Perrin-Riou on p-adic L-functions, which lends further evidence to Bloch-Kato conjectures.

Abstract:Let $E/\mathbf{Q}$ be a totally real quadratic field. Using unramified harmonic analysis in Hecke modules, we study the $\ell$-adic integral behavior of the (unramified part of the) Asai period attached to a Hilbert modular form for $E$, when evaluated on arbitrary integral test data in the sense of Loeffler. Using the same representation-theoretic framework, we also prove the conjectured integral behavior of local factors appearing in tame norm relations, between any collection of integral motivic Asai-Flach classes in the recipe of Loeffler-Skinner-Zerbes. Finally, specializing to one such specific integral collection, we obtain the most general version of the Asai-Flach Euler system tame norm relations, extending a result of Grossi.

The Harris-Venkatesh conjecture for derived Hecke operators II: a unified Stark conjecture

Abstract:We prove a compatibility theorem between the Stark conjecture and the Harris-Venkatesh conjecture for imaginary dihedral modular forms of weight $1$. The key technical input is a general two-variable $\mathrm{PGL}_2$ Siegel-Weil formula that precisely gives the Laurent series coefficients of Eisenstein series as a dual theta lift of Eisenstein series. This two-variable Siegel-Weil formula is applied to Rankin-Selberg periods of imaginary dihedral optimal forms and a refinement of Stark's formula relating $L$-values with elliptic units, yielding compatibility between derived Hecke operators and adjoint $L$-values for Deligne-Serre representations. We formulate a general unified conjecture encompassing the Stark and Harris-Venkatesh conjectures and conceptually reinterpret the action of derived Hecke operators as modular Stark unit data at almost all primes.

Abstract:We prove, using a theorem of Northcott, that if a number field K with s real embeddings and 2t complex ones has a group of units U such that all elements in U have all its complex conjugates of same absolute value, then one necessarily has t = 1. This fact has an interesting implication in complex hermitian geometry, namely it describes all Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds carrying locally conformally Kahler structures. It is then shown that the same method also works for the situation concerning the existence of pluriclosed metrics on Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds.

Abstract:In the present paper, we show a new result on the geometrically $2$-step solvable Grothendieck conjecture for genus $0$ curves over finitely generated fields. More precisely, we show that two genus $0$ hyperbolic curves over a finitely generated field $k$ are isomorphic as $k$-schemes (up to Frobenius twists) if and only if the geometrically maximal $2$-step solvable quotients of their étale fundamental groups are isomorphic as topological groups over the absolute Galois group of $k$.

Abstract:We investigate Eisenstein congruences between the so-called Euler systems of Garrett--Rankin--Selberg type. This includes the cohomology classes of Beilinson--Kato, Beilinson--Flach and diagonal cycles. The proofs crucially rely on different known versions of the Bloch--Kato conjecture, and are based on the study of the Perrin-Riou formalism and the comparison between the different $p$-adic $L$-functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we remove certain hypothesis in the theorem of Bertolini-Darmon on the rationality of Stark-Heegner points over narrow genus class fields of real quadratic fields. Along the way, we establish that certain normalized special values of $L$-functions are squares of rational numbers, a result that is of independent interest, and can be regarded as instances of the rank zero case of the Birch and Swinnerton-dyer conjecture modulo squares.

Abstract:We study the behaviour of the Stark conjecture for an abelian extension K/k of totally real number fields as K varies in a cyclotomic Z_p-tower. We consider possible strengthenings of the natural norm-coherence in the tower of putative solution of the complex conjecture and,especially, the consequences for the analogous p-adic conjecture. More precisely, under two principal assumptions - (i) that these solutions are given by exterior powers of norm-coherent sequences of global (or p-semilocal) units and (ii) that p splits in k - we show how the values of p-adic twisted zeta-functions for K/k are determined at any integer by a group-ring-valued regulator formed from the appropriate Coates-Wiles homomorphisms.

Abstract:Let p be a prime number which is split in an imaginary quadratic field k. Let \mathfrak{p} be a place of k above p. Let k_\infty be the unique Z_p-extension of k which unramified outside of \mathfrak{p}, and let K_\intfy be a finite extension of k_\infty, abelian over k. In case p \notin {2,3}, we prove that the characteristic ideal of the projective limit of global units modulo elliptic units coincides with the characteristic ideal of the projective limit of the p-class groups. Abstract:Mazur and Tate proposed a conjecture which compares the Mordell-Weil rank of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ with the order of vanishing of Mazur-Tate elements, which are analogues of Stickelberger elements. Under some relatively mild assumptions, we prove this conjecture. Our strategy of the proof is to study divisibility of certain derivatives of Kato's Euler system.

Abstract:We put forward a conjecture for the leading constant in Malle's conjecture on number fields of bounded discriminant, guided by stacky versions of conjectures of Batyrev-Manin, Batyrev-Tschinkel, and Peyre on rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties. A new framework for Brauer groups of stacks plays a key role in our conjecture, and we define a new notion of the unramified Brauer group of an algebraic stack.

Abstract:We formulate an Iwasawa main conjecture for a higher rank Euler system for a general motive. We prove "one half" of the main conjecture under mild hypotheses. We also formulate a conjecture on "Darmon-type derivatives" of Euler systems and give an application to the Tamagawa number conjecture.
