Abstract:High pressure and high temperature synthesized MoB2 and WB2 compacts were investigated using X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscope, scanning electron microscope, Vickers indentation test and ultrasonic measurements. Experiments showed that both MoB2 and WB2 compacts are phase pure and with a grain size of 100-200nm. Vickers indentation test under a large loading force of 49N showed that the Vickers hardness of MoB2 and WB2 are about 21 and 22GPa, respectively. The bulk modulus and shear modulus are about 296GPa, and 190GPa for MoB2 and 349 and 200GPa for WB2 through ultrasonic measurements. Our results indicate that MoB2 and WB2 are both hard materials with a hardness similar to that of tungsten carbide, which is widely used in industry.
Boron Suboxide: As Hard As Cubic Boron Nitride

Abstract:The Vickers hardness of boron suboxide single crystals was measured using a diamond indentation method. Under a loading force of 0.98 N, our test gave an average Vickers hardness of 45 GPa. The average fracture toughness was measured as 4.5 MPa m1/2. We also measured the hardness of the cubic boron nitride and sapphire single crystals for comparison. The average measured hardness for boron suboxide was found to be very close to that of cubic boron nitride under the same loading force. Our results suggest that the boron suboxide could be a new superhard material for industrial applications, surpassed in hardness only by diamond and cubic boron nitride.

Abstract:A lonsdaleite-like orthorhombic structure B2CO (oP8-B2CO) with strong sp3 covalent B‐C and B‐O bonds has been predicted theoretically by using the crystal structure prediction package CALYPSO. The mechanical, dynamical and thermodynamic stabilities of oP8-B2CO are verified by independent elastic constants, phonon dispersion spectrum and formation enthalpy, respectively. Pressure may promote synthesis of oP8-B2CO, which is demonstrated by calculating the relationship of formation enthalpies for oP8-B2CO via pressure. Based on bond resistance model for hardness, oP8-B2CO has a high hardness value of 47.70GPa. Band structures calculation illustrates that all B2CO phases are semiconducting with indirect band gaps and oP8-B2CO has the widest band gap (3.540eV) relative to tP4-B2CO (1.658eV) and tI16-B2CO (2.988eV). The superhardness and tunable band gap open an extensive industrial application and scientific research for B2CO compounds.

Abstract:By using the particle swarm optimization algorithm, the crystal structures of tungsten diboride Have been investigated up to 200 GPa at 0 K. We support that WB2 has an ReBr2-type structure (hP6-WB2) with the space group P6(3)/mmc at zero pressure and hP6-WB2 undergoes a phase transition to the MoB2-type phase (hR6-WB2) at about 10.8 GPa. Further, we predict that a tetragonal phase (tI12-WB2) with a space group of I4(1)/amid will be the most stable structure above 133.6 GPa. Phonon dispersion curves suggest that these phases possess dynamical stabilities in a wide range of 0,-200 GPa. The elastic constants and hardness are also estimated at 0 K and zero pressure. hP6-WB, and hR6-WB2 have hardnesses of 37.3 and 291 GPa,, respectively. However, tI12-VVB2 just possesses the smallest hardness value of 7.9 GPa. Finally, a temperature pressure phase diagram is derived within the quasi-harmonic approximation method, and the finite temperature phase boundaries are determined.

Abstract:The structures of amorphous materials at extreme pressures can be very different from those of their crystalline counterparts. Recent nonresonant inelastic scattering experiments on B2O3 glass performed up to ∼120 GPa have suggested that B–O coordination numbers higher than 4 were presented. In this study, B2O3 glass structures up to 350 GPa were generated from first-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) calculations. X-ray and neutron diffraction patterns, B K-edge X-ray absorption spectra, and 11B NMR spectra were computed and compared to experiments. The nature of the B–O interactions was characterized by Bader’s quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis and electron localization function (ELF). The theoretical results found that 5- and 6-coordinated B exists at high pressure. However, not all of the B and O contacts are covalently bonded. Instead, both BO5 and BO6 groups consisted of 4 short B–O covalent bonds with weaker B–O interactions with the other O atoms. Structure prediction calculations were performed at a similar pressure range to assess whether 6-coordinated B–O can exist in crystalline B2O3. No genuine 6-coordinated B was found. The high B–O coordination number in the glass is simply due to compaction at high pressure.

Abstract:Boron is an element of fascinating chemical complexity. Controversies have shrouded this element since its discovery was announced in 1808: the new 'element' turned out to be a compound containing less than 60-70 percent of boron, and it was not until 1909 that 99-percent pure boron was obtained. And although we now know of at least 16 polymorphs, the stable phase of boron is not yet experimentally established even at ambient conditions. Boron's complexities arise from frustration: situated between metals and insulators in the periodic table, boron has only three valence electrons, which would favour metallicity, but they are sufficiently localized that insulating states emerge. However, this subtle balance between metallic and insulating states is easily shifted by pressure, temperature and impurities. Here we report the results of high-pressure experiments and ab initio evolutionary crystal structure predictions that explore the structural stability of boron under pressure and, strikingly, reveal a partially ionic high-pressure boron phase. This new phase is stable between 19 and 89 GPa, can be quenched to ambient conditions, and has a hitherto unknown structure (space group Pnnm, 28 atoms in the unit cell) consisting of icosahedral B12 clusters and B2 pairs in a NaCl-type arrangement. We find that the ionicity of the phase affects its electronic bandgap, infrared adsorption and dielectric constants, and that it arises from the different electronic properties of the B2 pairs and B12 clusters and the resultant charge transfer between them.

Abstract:AbstractWe have explored the mechanical properties, electronic structures and phase transition behaviors of three designed new phases for element boron from ambient condition to high-pressure of 120 GPa including (1) a C2/c symmetric structure (m-B16); (2) a "Equation missing" symmetric structure (c-B56) and (3) a Pmna symmetric structure (o-B24). The calculation of the elastic constants and phonon dispersions shows that the phases are of mechanical and dynamic stability. The m-B16 phase is found to transform into another new phase (the o-B16 phase) when pressure exceeds 68 GPa. This might offer a new synthesis strategy for o-B16 from the metastable m-B16 at low temperature under high pressure, bypassing the thermodynamically stable γ-B28. The enthalpies of the c-B56 and o-B24 phases are observed to increase with pressure. The hardness of m-B16 and o-B16 is calculated to be about 56 GPa and 61 GPa, approaching to the highest value of 61 GPa recorded for α-Ga-B among all available Boron phases. The electronic structures and bonding characters are analyzed according to the difference charge-density and crystal orbital Hamilton population (COHP), revealing the metallic nature of the three phases.

Abstract:The physical properties of Cr2B with I4/m symmetry under pressure are investigated by the first‐principles method. With the increase in pressure, the hardness decreases first and then slightly increases, whereas the bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus, fracture toughness, minimum thermal conductivity, and Debye temperature monotonically increase. Pressure induces the transition from brittleness to toughness at ≈30 GPa. When P > 30 GPa, the hardness and toughness increase simultaneously with pressure. The analysis of electronic structure indicates that the variation of BB covalent bonds may be responsible for the abnormous increase in hardness when P > 30 GPa.

Abstract:Millimeter-sized FeB4 bulks were synthesized under high pressure of 15 GPa and 1600 degrees C. Multiple analysis methodologies including XRD, SEM, TEM, and Raman spectroscopy verified this new phase with an oP10 crystal structure. A relatively low hardness of 15.4 GPa, which is consistent with hardness estimated from both macroscopic and microscopic hardness models, excludes FeB4 as a superhard material. Magnetization and resistance measurements do not indicate superconductivity in FeB4 for temperature as low as 2.5 K. Previously reported superconductivity in FeB4 needs a further investigation, especially for structural imperfections, unidentified phases, and/or contaminations. (C) 2015 The Authors. Abstract:A fully tetrahedrally bonded boron nitride (BN) allotrope with an orthorhombic structure (O-BN) was investigated through first-principles calculations. O-BN has a bulk modulus of 371.8 GPa and a hardness of 66.4 GPa, thereby making it a superhard material with potential technological and industrial applications. O-BN becomes thermodynamically more stable than layered hexagonal BN (h-BN) at pressure above 1.5 GPa and is more favorable than the recently reported Pct-BN at any pressure. The phase transformations from h-BN and BN nanotubes to O-BN were respectively simulated, indicating the feasible synthesis of this superhard phase.

Abstract:The strength of boron suboxide (B6O) was measured at high pressure and temperature up to 8GPa and 800 degrees C using diffraction peak broadening analysis. The sample was synthesized at 6GPa and 1750 degrees C. In situ energy dispersive X-ray diffraction was conducted at the X17B2 beamline of the National Synchrotron Light Source. The differential stress in the powdered sample was derived through deconvolution of peak broadening of diffraction lines (0 2 1) and (1 1 3) during the compression and heating. The sample shows anisotropic yielding along the two orientations. The (0 2 1) orientation does not show yielding within the investigated pressure range (8 GPa) whereas the (1 1 3) orientation yields at 5 GPa. Upon heating, significant weakening (yielding) was observed at temperatures above 400 degrees C. The yield temperature of boron suboxide is much lower than that of diamond, 1200 degrees C, but similar to that observed in moissanite (SiC).

Abstract:In the present work we have proposed the method that allows one to easily estimate hardness and bulk modulus of known or hypothetical solid phases from the data on Gibbs energy of atomization of the elements and corresponding covalent radii. It has been shown that hardness and bulk moduli of compounds strongly correlate with their thermodynamic and structural properties. The proposed method may be used for a large number of compounds with various types of chemical bonding and structures; moreover, the temperature dependence of hardness may be calculated, that has been performed for diamond and cubic boron nitride. The correctness of this approach has been shown for the recently synthesized superhard diamond-like BC5. It has been predicted that the hypothetical forms of B2O3, diamond-like boron, BCx and COx, which could be synthesized at high pressures and temperatures, should have extreme hardness.

Abstract:Chromium tetraboride (CrB4), a recently proposed candidate for superhard materials, has been synthesized at high pressure and temperature by a solid-state reaction. As a byproduct, chromium diboride (CrB2) also forms and co-exists with CrB4 in the final product. The comparative studies of crystal structure, elastic property, and hardness of both phases have been conducted at the same sample environment conditions. The crystal structure of CrB4 has been refined with an orthorhombic symmetry of Immm(space group no. 71) or Pnnm (space group no. 58) using X-ray diffraction data. Further simulations indicate that the structural distinction between Immm and Pnnm can be resolved by neutron diffraction, due to the high scattering cross-section of boron (11B) by neutrons. Although CrB2 and CrB4 have close bulk modulus at about 230 GPa, the measured asymptotic Vickers hardness yields 16 GPa for CrB2 but 30 GPa for CrB4, which is nearly two times that of CrB2. The dramatic enhancement in hardness in CrB4 is attributed to the strong three-dimensional Cr-B network, in contrast to the layered lattice structure of hexagonal CrB2.

Abstract:Full understanding of atomic arrangement in amorphous oxides both at ambient and high pressure is an ongoing fundamental puzzle. Whereas the structures of archetypal oxide glasses such as v-B2O3 at high pressure are essential to elucidate origins of anomalous macroscopic properties of more complex melts, knowledge of the high-pressure structure and pressure-induced coordination changes of these glasses has remained elusive due to lack of suitable in situ experimental probes. Here, we report synchrotron inelastic X-ray scattering results for v-B2O3 at pressures up to 22.5 GPa, revealing the nature of pressure-induced bonding changes and the structure. Direct in situ measurements show a continuous transformation from tri-coordinated to tetra-coordinated boron beginning at 4-7 GPa with most of the boron tetra-coordinated above 20 GPa, forming dense tetrahedral v-B2O3. After decompression from high pressure the bonding reverts back to tri-coordinated boron but with the data suggesting a permanent densification.

Abstract:The high-pressure/high-temperature behavior of boron has been investigated up to 30 GPa using x-ray diffraction techniques. We have investigated the isothermal compressibility of rhombohedral-105 (R-105) boron to 30.7 GPa, and determined the bulk modulus K-0T to be 205(+/-16) GPa with K-0T(')=4.3(+/-1.6). We found that the a direction of R-105 boron (hexagonal setting) is less compressible than c, which indicates that the B10-B-B10 chain is less rigid than the B12 cluster. High P-T studies were conducted using double-sided laser heating to temperatures of 3500 K. R-105 boron transforms above 10 GPa at high temperature to a tetragonal phase that remains on P-T quenching. The transformation results in both a higher density and higher entropy phase and is consistent with the formation of the T-192 phase of boron.

Abstract:We have performed in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and first-principles calculations to explore the compression behavior of barium hexaboride (BaB₆) under high pressure. No phase transitions in our experiment are observed up to 49.3 GPa at ambient temperature. It is found that the ambient cage structure (Pm3m) is still stable with a basic covalent network during the experimental pressure run. The results of our theoretical calculations show that the ambient structure might transform into three dynamically stable structures (Cmmm, Cmcm and I4/mmm) at 78 GPa, 97 GPa and 105 GPa respectively. The energy band calculations indicate that the sample is still a semiconductor with a narrow gap at 50 GPa.
Superhard Materials with Low Elastic Moduli: Three-dimensional Covalent Bonding As the Origin of Superhardness Inb6o

Abstract:Using first-principles calculations, we show that, in spite of its relatively low shear modulus, boron suboxide (B6O) is superhard because of its high shear strength of >= 38 GPa which originates from three-dimensional covalently bonded network of B-12 icosahedral units connected by boron and oxygen atoms. We further demonstrate that the high shear resistance of B6O is related to strong B-B covalent bonds that connect the B-12 units. These results challenge the concept of design intrinsically superhard materials based on high elastic moduli only.

Abstract:We use high-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction and density-functional theory (DFT) to investigate the phase stability, equations of state (EOSs), and mechanical hardness of zirconia (ZrO2) up to ∼54 and 160 GPa, respectively. For the equilibrium phase at ambient conditions (MI), we provide an experimental EOS that is comparable to results obtained from room-pressure Brillouin scattering experiments and bulk modulus-volume systematics but different from previous high-pressure experiments. The experimental second-order Birch-Murnaghan EOS parameters of MI-ZrO2 are: ambient-pressure volume (V0) of 35.15(±0.03) Å3/f.u. with an ambient-pressure bulk modulus K0 of 210(±28) GPa. For the high-pressure OI phase, we find that the K0=290(±11) GPa, which is 19%–32% higher than previously determined, and V0=33.65(±0.07) Å3/f.u. The small volume decrease of 3.4% across the MI→OI transition at ∼10 GPa is associated with a 38% increase in the bulk modulus consistent with our DFT calculations that predict a ∼36% and 39% increase in K0 for the generalized gradient and local density approximations, respectively. In contrast to the EOS of MI and OI, we find that our experimental EOS for the high-pressure OII phase is in good agreement with previous measurements. The large volume decrease across the OI→OII phase transition as obtained from both our experiments and calculations is ∼10%. Our estimates, using scaling relations, indicate that this phase, while dense and quenchable, may have a comparatively low mechanical hardness of ∼10 GPa.
