Abstract:We study Anderson localization in graphene with short-range disorder using the real-space Kubo-Greenwood method implemented on graphics processing units. Two models of short-range disorder, namely, the Anderson on-site disorder model and the vacancy defect model, are considered. For graphene with Anderson disorder, localization lengths of quasi-one-dimensional systems with various disorder strengths, edge symmetries, and boundary conditions are calculated using the real-space Kubo-Greenwood formalism, showing excellent agreement with independent transfer matrix calculations and superior computational efficiency. Using these data, we demonstrate the applicability of the one-parameter scaling theory of localization length and propose an analytical expression for the scaling function, which provides a reliable method of computing the two-dimensional localization length. This method is found to be consistent with another widely used method which relates the two-dimensional localization length to the elastic mean free path and the semiclassical conductivity. Abnormal behavior at the charge neutrality point is identified and interpreted to be caused by finite-size effects when the system width is comparable to or smaller than the elastic mean free path. We also demonstrate the finite-size effect when calculating the two-dimensional conductivity in the localized regime and show that a renormalization group beta function consistent with the one-parameter scaling theory can be extracted numerically. For graphene with vacancy disorder, we show that the proposed scaling function of localization length also applies. Lastly, we discuss some ambiguities in calculating the semiclassical conductivity around the charge neutrality point due to the presence of resonant states.

Abstract:We prove the existence and establish the Lifschitz singularity of the integrated density of states for certain random Hamiltonians on fractal spaces of infinite diameter. The kinetic term is given by where is the Laplacian on the fractal and is a completely monotone function satisfying some mild regularity conditions. The random potential is of alloy-type.

Abstract:Using a combination of numerical and analytical calculations, we study the disorder-induced zero bias anomaly (ZBA) in the density of states of strongly-correlated systems modeled by the two dimensional Anderson-Hubbard model. We find that the ZBA comes from the response of the nonlocal inelastic self-energy to the disorder potential, a result which has implications for theoretical approaches that retain only the local self-energy. Using an approximate analytic form for the selfenergy, we derive an expression for the density of states of the two-site Anderson-Hubbard model. Our formalism reproduces the essential features of the ZBA, namely that the width is proportional to the hopping amplitude t and is independent of the interaction strength and disorder potential.
The Temperature and Opacity of Atomic Hydrogen in Spiral Galaxies

Abstract:We analyze the resolved neutral hydrogen emission properties of a sample of eleven of the nearest spiral galaxies. Between 60 and 90% of the total HI line flux within the optical disk is due to a high brightness network (HBN) of emission features which are marginally resolved in their narrow dimension at about 150 pc and have a face-on covering factor of about 15%. Averaged line profiles of this component are systematically non-Gaussian with a narrow core (less than about 6 km/s FWHM) superposed on broad Lorentzian wings (30 km/s FWHM). An upper limit to the gas temperature of 300 K follows directly from the narrow line profiles, while simple modeling suggests kinetic temperatures equal to the peak emission brightness temperature (80-200 K) in all cases but the outer disks of low mass galaxies, where the HBN becomes optically thin to the 21 cm line. Positive radial gradients in the derived kinetic temperature are found in all spiral galaxies. The distributions of brightness temperature with radius in our sample form a nested system with galaxies of earlier morphological type systematically displaced to lower temperature at all radii. The fractional line flux due to the HBN plummets abruptly near the edge of the optical disk where a diffuse outer gas disk takes over. We identify the HBN with the Cool Neutral Medium.

Anderson localization: A disorder-induced quantum bound state

Abstract:Electrons at the Fermi energy lose their ability to propagate to long distances in disordered media when undergoing the Anderson localization transition. We use Green functions in an analytically solvable model to describe the vanishing of diffusion at this transition. We find that the low-energy asymptotics of the electron-hole correlation function undergoes a crossover with a disorder-dependent time scale separating the two regimes. This scale determines how long the propagating particle remains captured within a finite volume. It is critical and diverges at the localization transition. According to our analysis, the diffusionless phase consists of quantum bound states that cannot be described in the space of Bloch waves and with the diffusion equation. We identify the necessary amendments to the existing approaches to reach a consistent microscopic picture of the emergence of Anderson localization.

Anderson localization transition in disordered hyperbolic lattices

Abstract:We study Anderson localization in disordered tight-binding models on hyperbolic lattices. Such lattices are geometries intermediate between ordinary two-dimensional crystalline lattices, which localize at infinitesimal disorder, and Bethe lattices, which localize at strong disorder. Using state-of-the-art computational group theory methods to create large systems, we approximate the thermodynamic limit through appropriate periodic boundary conditions and numerically demonstrate the existence of an Anderson localization transition on the $\{8,3\}$ and $\{8,8\}$ lattices. We find unusually large critical disorder strengths, determine critical exponents, and observe a strong finite-size effect in the level statistics.

Abstract:Previous work proposed a strong-disorder renormalization approach for the Anderson model, using it to calculate the density of states and the inverse participation ratio [Johri \& Bhatt, Phys.\ Rev.\ B {\bf 90} 060205(R) (2014)]. This is interesting because of the potential for expansion to higher dimensions and to interacting systems. The original proposal used a non-standard perturbation theory approach which avoided degeneracies. We implemented the same structure but with standard Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory. Here degeneracies do arise, and we consider two approaches, one in which renormalization is suppressed if degeneracy is present and a second in which the most common form of degeneracy is handled using standard degenerate perturbation theory. The version in which degeneracies are not handled performs similarly to the original proposal, and the addition of degeneracies provides some improvement.

Abstract:We study the Anderson orthogonality catastrophe (AOC) in finite conductors with diffusive disorder. The disorder averaged logarithm of $\chi$, the overlap between the ground states before and after adding a static impurity, is found to depend nonmonotonically on the disorder. In two dimensions $<\ln\chi^{-1}> \propto \ln^2 N$ in the weak disorder limit, thus showing a stronger dependence on the number of electrons $N$ than in the canonical AOC. A very broad tail of the distribution of $\chi$, found numerically, is a signature of the importance of a few-level statistics at the Fermi energy.

Abstract:The Anderson metal-insulator transition is a continuous phase transition driven by disorder. It remains a challenging problem to theoretically determine universal critical properties at the transition. The Anderson transition in a model with a discrete sublattice or particle-hole symmetry belongs to one of seven universality classes which are different from the three well-known standard ones. Here we review our recent theoretical work on these new universality classes in (quasi) one and two dimensions.

Abstract:Based on a selfconsistent theory of localization we study the electron transport properties of a disordered system in the framework of the Anderson model on a Bethe lattice. In the calculation of the dc conductivity we separately discuss the two contributions to the current-current correlation function dominating its behaviour for small and large disorder. The resulting conductivity abruptly vanishes at a critical disorder strength marking the localization transition.

Abstract:Disorder is ubiquitous in solid-state systems, and its crucial influence on transport properties was revealed by the discovery of Anderson localization. Generally speaking, all bulk states will be exponentially localized in the strong disorder limit, but whether an Anderson transition takes place depends on the dimension and symmetries of the system. The scaling theory and symmetry classes are at the heart of the study of the Anderson transition, and the critical exponent $\nu$ characterizing the power-law divergence of localization length is of particular interest. In contrast with the well-established lower critical dimension $d_l=2$ of the Anderson transition, the upper critical dimension $d_u$, above which the disordered system can be described by mean-field theory, remains uncertain, and precise numerical evaluations of the critical exponent in higher dimensions are needed. In this study, we apply Borel-Padé resummation method to the known perturbative results of the non-linear sigma model (NL$\sigma$M) to estimate the critical exponents of the Boguliubov-de Gennes (BdG) classes. We also report numerical simulations of class DIII in 3D, and classes C and CI in 4D, and compare the results of the resummation method with these and previously published work. Our results may be experimentally tested in realizations of quantum kicked rotor models in atomic-optic systems, where the critical behavior of dynamical localization in higher dimensions can be measured.

Abstract:The random-field spin-1/2 XXZ chains, and the corresponding Anderson insulators of spinless fermions with density-density interaction, have been intensively studied in the context of many-body localization. However, we recently argued [B. Krajewski et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 260601(2022)] that the two-body density-density interaction in these models is not generic since only a small fraction of this interaction represents a true local perturbation to the Anderson insulator. Here we study ergodicity of strongly disordered Anderson insulator chains choosing other forms of the two-body interaction for which the strength of the true perturbation is of the same order of magnitude as the bare two-body interaction. Focusing on the strong interaction regime, numerical results for the level statistics and the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis are consistent with emergence of ergodicity at arbitrary strong disorder.

Our approach combines probabilistic estimates from the Anderson model with the Craig–Wayne–Bourgain method for studying quasi-periodic solutions of nonlinear PDEs.

Abstract:Strongly correlated fermions in a crystal or in an optical lattice in the presence of binary-alloy disorder are investigated. We employ the statistical dynamical mean-field theory, which incorporates both fluctuations due to disorder and local correlations due to interaction, to solve the Anderson-Hubbard model. Localization due to disorder is studied by means of the probability distribution function of the local density of states. We obtain a complete paramagnetic ground state phase diagram consisting of disordered correlated metal, Anderson-Mott insulator, and band insulator.

Abstract:We develop a cluster typical medium theory to study localization in disordered electronic systems. Our formalism is able to incorporate non-local correlations beyond the local typical medium theory in a systematic way. The cluster typical medium theory utilizes the momentum resolved typical density of states and hybridization function to characterize the localization transition. We apply the formalism to the Anderson model of localization in one- and two-dimensions. In one dimension, we find that the critical disorder strength scales inversely with the linear cluster size with a power-law, $W_c \sim (1/L_c)^{1/\nu}$; whereas in two dimensions, the critical disorder strength decreases logarithmically with the linear cluster size. Our results are consistent with previous numerical work and in agreement with the one-parameter scaling theory.

Anderson localization induced by structural disorder

Abstract:We examine the onset of Anderson localization in three-dimensional systems with structural disorder in the form of lattice irregularities and in the absence of any on-site disordered potential. Analyzing two models with distinct types of lattice regularities, we show that the Anderson localization transition occurs when the strength of the structural disorder is smoothly increased. Performing finite-size scaling analysis of the results, we show that the transition belongs to the same universality class as regular Anderson localization induced by onsite disorder. Our work identifies a new class of structurally disordered lattice models in which destructive interference of matter waves may inhibit transport and lead to a transition between metallic and localized phases.

Abstract:We study many-body localization in a hardcore boson model in the presence of random disorder on finite generation fractal lattices with different Hausdorff dimensions and different local lattice structures. In particular, we consider the Vicsek, T-shaped, Sierpinski gasket, and modified Koch-curve fractal lattices. In the single-particle case, these systems display Anderson localization for arbitrary disorder strength if they are large enough. In the many-body case, the systems available to exact diagonalization exhibit a transition between a delocalized and localized regime, visible in the spectral and entanglement properties of these systems. The position of this transition depends on the Hausdorff dimension of the given fractal, as well as on its local structure.

Abstract:Topic of the thesis is a theoretical description of the ultracold atomic gases in one- and two-dimensional optical lattices in the presence of the disorder leading to the Anderson localization. The disorder is created by interaction of the main fraction of atoms with the second immobilized fraction distributed randomly over the lattice. In low-dimensional systems there is no transition from the Anderson localized to the conducting phase, although in the presence of correlations a discrete set of extended states can exist. The first part of the thesis is devoted to properties of such states. In the finite size lattices, the presence of those states results in the appearance of `windows of transport' -- energy ranges, in which the localization length is longer than the system size.The analytical method of determining the extended states energies for correlations of generalized $N$-mers type is presented, along with a proof that indeed those states are extended in the infinite system. Subsequently, the way of experimental creation of this type of correlations is proposed, as well as the technique of generation of the disorder in the tunneling amplitudes, which significantly enhances tunability of the proposed energy filters. The second part of the thesis describes the method which allows to simulate a specific type of the disorder: random magnetic field. Systems of such a class, created in a two dimensional lattice using simultaneous fast periodic modulation of the lattice height and interactions with immobilized species, may allow in future to investigate the range of topics from the condensed matter physics, for example fractional quantum Hall effect at half-filling. In the thesis, the most interesting features observed upon investigation of such systems are presented. Especially, the anomalously low localization length for correlated disorder is explained.
