Abstract:Let $S$ be a semigroup. We determine the complex-valued solutions $f,g,h$ of the functional equation \begin{equation*}f(xy)=f(x)g(y)+g(x)f(y)+h(x)h(y), x,y\in S,\end{equation*} in terms of multiplicative functions, solutions of the special case $$\varphi(xy)=\varphi(x)\chi(y)+\chi(x)\varphi(y), x,y\in S$$ of the sine addition law, where $\chi:S\to\mathbb{C}$ is a multiplicative function, and also in terms of solutions of the particular case $$\psi(xy)=\psi(x)\chi(y)+\chi(x)\psi(y)+\varphi(x)\varphi(y), x,y\in S$$ of the cosine-sine functional equation where $\chi:S\to\mathbb{C}$ is a multiplicative function and $\varphi:S\to\mathbb{C}$ such that the pair $(\varphi,\chi)$ satisfies the sine addition law.

Abstract:Let G \mathsf G be a connected reductive linear algebraic group defined over R \mathbb R , and let C : G → G C: \mathsf G\rightarrow \mathsf G be a fundamental Chevalley involution. We show that for every g ∈ G ( R ) g\in \mathsf G(\mathbb R) , C ( g ) C(g) is conjugate to g − 1 g^{-1} in the group G ( R ) \mathsf G(\mathbb R) . Similar result on the Lie algebras is also obtained.

Abstract:The author was recently able to provide a cohomological interpretation of Tate's Riemann-Roch formula for number fields using some new harmonic analysis objects, ghost-spaces. When trying to investigate these objects in general, we realized the importance of functions and measures on locally compact abelian groups that are both positive and positive-definite at the same time. It looks like this class of functions and measures was not systematically studied before. The goal of this paper is to partially fill in this gap. We answer some of the natural questions involving these functions and measures, especially those that satisfy some extra integrability conditions. We also study some operations and constructions involving these functions and measures. There are several very interesting open questions, that we are only able to point out at this moment. In particular, the structure of the cone of such functions is not clear even when the group is just $\R.$

Abstract:Let G be any abelian group and a_sG_s_s=1^k be a finite system of cosetsof subgroups G_1,...,G_k. We show that if a_sG_s_s=1^k covers all theelements of G at least m times with the coset a_tG_t irredundant then[G:G_t]≤2^k-m and furthermore k≥m+f([G:G_t]), where f(∏_i=1^rp_i^alpha_i)=∑_i=1^r alpha_i(p_i-1) if p_1,...,p_r are distinct primesand alpha_1,...,alpha_r are nonnegative integers. This extends Mycielski'sconjecture in a new way and implies a conjecture of Gao and Geroldinger. Ournew method involves algebraic number theory and characters of abelian groups.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and $N<G$ a normal subgroup with $G/N$ abelian. We show how the conjugacy classes of $G$ in a given coset $qN$ relate to the irreducible characters of $G$ that are not identically $0$ on $qN$. We describe several consequences. In particular, we deduce that when $G/N$ is cyclic generated by $q$, the number of irreducible characters of $N$ that extend to $G$ is the number of conjugacy classes of $G$ in $qN$.

Abstract:Given a finite abelian group $G$ and cyclic subgroups $A$, $B$, $C$ of $G$ of the same order, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for $A$, $B$, $C$ to admit a common transversal for the cosets they afford. For an arbitrary number of cyclic subgroups we give a sufficient criterion when there exists a common complement. Moreover, in several cases where a common transversal exists, we provide concrete constructions.

Abstract:We study the projective special Kaehler condition on groups, providing an intrinsic definition of homogeneous projective special Kaehler that includes the previously known examples. We give intrinsic defining equations that may be used without resorting to computations in the special cone, and emphasise certain associated integrability equations. The definition is shown to have the property that the image of such structures under the c-map is necessarily a left-invariant quaternionic Kaehler structure on a Lie group.

Abstract:The article presents several methods for the arithmetic of finite abelian groups. We introduce a tool - already used by Delsarte in [1] as I found out later - analogous to Dirichlet's convolution to obtain combinatorial results on these groups. Using this convolution and some group actions, we deduce an interesting fact : the number of generating subsets of a finite abelian group is always a multiple of the order of the group. Eventually, we prove a theorem about the generation of the group of permutations of an abelian group G using only transpositions and translations from the group G.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a group and $\alpha: G \times G \to G$ denote the commutator map. In the case of finite groups, Frobenius gave the formula to compute the cardinalities of the fibres $\alpha^{-1}(g)$ in terms of the character values $\chi(g)$ for irreducible characters $\chi$ of $G$. We generalise this formula to compact Lie groups. Further, we connect this generalised formula to the commutator probability of the concerned groups.

Abstract:This paper studies groups and their coset monoids. The anti-abnormal subgroups of a group are firstly introduced and investigated. It is shown that a group is an N ̃ -group if and only if each subgroup of it is anti-abnormal. Also, it is proved that the coset semigroups of N ̃ -groups are exactly the E -reflexive inverse semigroups which are factorisable and the natural connection between their semilattice of idempotents and lattice of subgroups of their group of units is a dual isomorphism. Finally, some characterizations of the coset semigroups of S -groups ( U -groups and residually central groups respectively) are given. This extends McAlister's result in 1980.

Abstract:We revisit the group structure on elliptic curves and give a simple and elementary proof of the associativity of the addition. We do this by providing an explicit formula for the sum of three points, only using the explicit definition of the group structure. In the process we find a nice geometric interpretation of the sum of three points on the elliptic curve.

Abstract:In this paper, which is a continuation of earlier work by the first author and Gunnar Carlsson, one of the first results we establish is the additivity of the motivic Becker-Gottlieb transfer, as well as their étale realizations. This extends the additivity results the authors already established for the corresponding traces. We then apply this to derive several important consequences: for example, in addition to obtaining the analogues of various double coset formulae known in the classical setting of algebraic topology, we also obtain applications to Brauer groups of homogeneous spaces associated to reductive groups over separably closed fields. We also consider the relationship between the transfer on schemes provided with a compatible action by a $1$-parameter subgroup and the transfer associated to the fixed point scheme of the $1$-parameter subgroup.

Abstract:In the theory of Frobenius manifolds and Witten–Dijkgraaf–Verlinde–Verlinde (WDVV) equations, one normally assumes that Frobenius algebras associated with a solution F have an identity e . Equivalently, the corresponding flat metric can be expressed as a linear combination of the matrices of the third-order derivatives of the pre-potential function F . We show that under certain non-degeneracy conditions, this assumption can be omitted, that is, the identity field e exists automatically without further assumptions. We also study trigonometric solutions F determined by a finite collection of vectors with multiplicities, and we give an explicit formula for the field e for all the known such solutions. The corresponding collections of vectors are given by the non-simply laced root systems or are related to their projections to the intersection of mirrors.

On Galois covers of curves and arithmetic of Jacobians

Abstract:We study the arithmetic of curves and Jacobians endowed with the action of a finite group $G$. This includes a study of the basic properties, as $G$-modules, of their $\ell$-adic representations, Selmer groups, rational points and Shafarevich-Tate groups. In particular, we show that $p^\infty$-Selmer groups are self-dual $G$-modules, and give various `$G$-descent' results for Selmer groups and rational points. Along the way we revisit, and slightly refine, a construction going back to Kani and Rosen for associating isogenies to homomorphisms between permutation representations. With a view to future applications, it is convenient to work throughout with curves that are not assumed to be geometrically connected (or even connected); such curves arise naturally when taking Galois closures of covers of curves. For lack of a suitable reference, we carefully detail how to deduce the relevant properties of such curves and their Jacobians from the more standard geometrically connected case.
