Abstract:Compact launching double arbitrarily accelerating caustic beams with orthogonal polarizations based on a metasurface are presented. By only tailoring the phase of the transmitted fields from an amorphous silicon elliptical posts array, launching double arbitrarily accelerating caustic beams with orthogonal polarizations is achieved. The trajectories of vector caustic beams with orthogonal polarizations are dependent on the phase modulations through the structural units of the metasurfaces. By changing the polarization of the incident light, dynamic switching between two caustic beams is obtained. Compared to the traditional methods, the simple design method can provide a very compact device overcoming some limitations of the traditional methods for generating vector caustic beams. The results can be used for potential applications in integrated optics, polarization optics, dynamic beam shaping, biosensing, and micro-particle manipulation. (C) 2020 Optical Society of America
Self-Pulsations in Terahertz Quantum Cascade Lasers under Strong Optical Feedback: The Effect of Multiple Reflections in the External Cavity

Abstract:We have recently reported the self-pulsation phenomenon under strong optical feedback in terahertz (THz) quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). One important issue, however, we left open: the effect of multiple round trips in the external cavity on the laser response to feedback. Our current analysis also casts additional light on the phenomenon of self-pulsations. Using only one external cavity round trip (ECRT) in the model has been the common approach following the seminal paper by Lang-Kobayashi in 1980. However, the conditions under which the Lang-Kobayashi model, in its original single-ECRT formulation, is applicable has been rarely explored. In this work, we investigate the self-pulsation phenomenon under multiple ECRTs. We found that the self-pulsation waveform changes when considering more than one ECRT. This we attribute to the combined effect of the extended external cavity length and the frequency modulation of the pulsation frequency by the optical feedback. Our findings add to the understanding of the optical feedback dynamics under multiple ECRTs and provide a pathway for selecting the appropriate numerical model to study the optical feedback dynamics in THz QCLs and semiconductor lasers in general.

Abstract:Self-mixing velocity sensor based on a mutual-injected two-element terahertz quantum cascade laser (THz QCL) array is studied theoretically. The working characteristics of mutual-injected THz QCL array with different frequency detunings and self-mixing feedback strengths, as well as their influences on the self-mixing measurements are discussed in detail. Within the phase-locked range, each laser in the array reaches a stable state rapidly and can be used as a self-mixing detector due to the mutual injection coupling. The array will no longer be phase-locked when the frequency detuning of the lasers is too large, and only the laser that receives the feedback light can still be used for self-mixing velocity measurements. It is also found that even for the case of strong feedback, the THz QCLs will not be completely unstable and the self-mixing velocity measurements could also be possible. In addition, the simulation also shows that the array could measure two independent moving targets simultaneously. These results provide the theoretical support for the future applications of THz QCL arrays in self-mixing sensors.

Abstract:The effectiveness of self-mixing interferometry has been demonstrated across the electromagnetic spectrum, from visible to microwave frequencies, in a plethora of sensing applications, ranging from distance measurement to material analysis, microscopy and coherent imaging. Owing to their intrinsic stability to optical feedback, quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) represent a source that offers unique and versatile characteristics to further improve the self-mixing functionality at mid infrared and terahertz (THz) frequencies. Here, we show the feasibility of detecting with nanometer precision deeply subwalength (< {\lambda}/6000) mechanical vibrations of a suspended Si3N4-membrane used as the external element of a THz QCL feedback interferometric apparatus. Besides representing a platform for the characterization of small displacements, our self-mixing configuration can be exploited for the realization of optomechanical systems, where several laser sources can be linked together through a common mechanical microresonator actuated by radiation pressure.

Abstract:The self-mixing effect occurs when a fraction of the emitted light reflected by an external target is reinjected into the laser cavity, resulting in a modulation of laser power, emission frequency and laser terminal voltage.1 Compared with interband diode lasers, terahertz quantum cascade lasers (THz-QCLs) are suitable light sources for self-mixing interference due to the smaller linewidth enhancement factor and the shorter carrier lifetimes. The self-mixing signal monitored by the terminal voltage is highly sensitive to the complex reflectivity or complex refractive index and motion of a remote target. This configuration thus creates a compact, coherent sensor with the advantages of a reduced experimental set-up and cost, and increased sensitivity.

Abstract:Active control of the amplitude and frequency of terahertz sources is an essential prerequisite for exploiting a myriad of terahertz applications in imaging, spectroscopy, and communications. Here we present a optoelectronic, external modulation technique applied to a terahertz quantum cascade laser which holds the promise of addressing a number of important challenges in this research area. A hybrid metamaterial/graphene device is implemented into an external cavity set-up allowing for optoelectronic tuning of feedback into a quantum cascade laser. We demonstrate powerful, all-electronic, control over the amplitude and frequency of the laser output. Full laser switching is performed by electrostatic gating of the metamaterial/graphene device, demonstrating a modulation depth of 100%. External control of the emission spectrum is also achieved, highlighting the flexibility of this feedback method. By taking advantage of the frequency dispersive reflectivity of the metamaterial array, different modes of the QCL output are selectively suppressed using lithographic tuning and single mode operation of the multi-mode laser is enforced. Side mode suppression is electrically modulated from ~6 dB to ~21 dB, demonstrating active, optoelectronic modulation of the laser frequency content between multi-mode and single mode operation.

Abstract:We present nonlinear optical four-wave mixing in a silicon nanodisk dimer metasurface. Under the oblique incident plane waves, the designed metasurface exhibits a multiresonant feature with simultaneous excitations of three quasi-bound states in the continuum (BIC). Through employing these quasi-BICs with maximizing electric field energy at the input bump wavelengths, significant enhancement of third-order nonlinear processes including third-harmonic generation, degenerate and nondegenerate four-wave mixing are demonstrated, giving rise to ten frequencies in the visible wavelengths. Frequency-selective terahertz wave amplification by a time-boundary-engineered Huygens metasurface

Abstract:Ultrafast manipulation of optical resonance can establish the time-boundary effect in time-variant media leading to a new degree of freedom for coherent control of electromagnetic waves. Here, we demonstrate that a free-standing all dielectric Huygens metasurface of degenerate electric and magnetic resonances can prompt the broadband near-unity transmission in its static state, whereas it enables wave amplification in the presence of time boundary. The time boundary is realized by femtosecond laser excitations that transiently inject free carriers into the constituent meta-atoms for dynamic removal of a pre-established two-fold degeneracy. We observe that the transmittance in the photo-excited Huygens metasurface can exceed unity transmittance, i.e., THz wave amplification, by a factor over 20% in intensity at frequencies tunable by varying the arrival of time boundary with respect to that of the seed terahertz pulse. By numerical simulations and analysis with time-dependent coupled mode theory, we show that the wave amplification results from the ultrafast Q-switching and shift in resonant frequencies. This work demonstrates a new approach to achieve tunable amplification in an optical microcavity by exploiting the concept of time-variant media and the unique electromagnetic properties of Huygens metasurface.

Abstract:Dielectric metasurfaces are highly sought-after since they have found a variety of linear and nonlinear applications. Here, a novel transmission modulation is presented for pulsed laser generation by directly exploiting the enhanced Kerr effect from a periodic array of silicon nanodisks. The Mie resonance of the unit cells enhances the Kerr effect of the silicon material and is redshifted by the latter, so that the transmission of the metasurface at the working wavelength is strongly modulated (the observed modulation depth is above 3% under moderate exciting power). By inserting the fabricated metasurface as a self-modulator into a ring cavity fiber laser, stable Q-switched pulse laser output is achieved with a duration of 1.4 mu s and a repetition rate of 60 kHz. This work opens a door for ultra-thin low-loss dielectric metasurfaces to efficiently shape the operation of pulsed lasing based on their enhanced nonlinear effects and flexible propagation manipulation. By exploiting the enhanced Kerr effect from a periodic array of silicon nanodisks, the Mie resonance of the unit cells enhances is redshifted, achieving a novel transmission modulation for pulsed laser generation. Abstract:Based on the rate equation model, we study the phase locking and self-mixing properties of optically mutual-injected terahertz quantum cascade lasers. Within the phase-locked range, the laser array works steadily at the same frequency, and the electric field amplitudes are stable. Out of the phase-locked range, the instantaneous frequencies and electric field amplitudes oscillate with time. The spontaneous emission noise of mutual-injected QCLs is higher than that of free-running lasers with the same parameters. Mutual-injected QCLs for self-mixing velocity measurement are also analyzed and simulated. When the array works in the phase-locked range, simulation with a moving target shows that self-mixing signals can be observed from each laser. These results are helpful for further understanding the nonlinear dynamic behaviors of THz QCLs under optical injection and provide theoretical support for the development of self-mixing measurement techniques using QCL arrays.

Abstract:The THz quantum cascade laser (THz-QCL) based two-beam self mixing (SM) interference is achieved by re-injecting optical feedbacks from two independent targets into the laser cavity. The two-beam SM effect manifests itself in the variation of laser terminal voltage. Information of the relative position change of the two targets can be obtained by analyzing the amplitude and phase of the SM signal. Using this method, micron-scale thickness variation of a GaAs sample, about one percent of the laser wavelength, is accurately measured. Our study provides an available way to develop new terahertz nondestructive testing technology.

Abstract:Bessel beam steering operating at the terahertz (THz) band holds great potential in improving the depth-of-field (DOF) for imaging systems and the quality of short-range high-speed communications. This article reports a THz reflective metasurface for frequency-controlled Bessel beams steering. A multiresonance structure with a large reflection phase range is designed as the fundamental element of the metasurface by varying its dimensions. At a designated frequency, the desired phase distribution to generate an off-axis Bessel beam is determined by four terms, i.e., phase to emulate an axicon, phase compensation for the incident plane waves, phase to deflect the outgoing beam, and a constant phase for optimization. Then, the metasurface, composed of $79\times79$ half-wavelength elements with different dimensions, is constructed to fit the desired phase distributions at multiple frequencies. Illuminated by linearly polarized (LP) waves, the metasurface can produce Bessel beams with controllable directions by adjusting frequencies. As a proof-of-concept, a metasurface prototype operating from 0.8 to 1.1 THz was fabricated and experimentally demonstrated for Bessel beams generation and beam scanning from 6.4° to 15.2° off normal.

Abstract:Ultrafast Terahertz Metadevices In article number 2104275, Jiangang Liang, Chunhai Fan, Chao Chang, and co‐workers present a germanium hybrid metallic metasurface under dual‐stimulus control. Photoexcitation of germanium film enables 100% modulation depth of Fano resonance and ultrafast switching time within 10 ps. By adding current‐bias, the pump threshold to modulate the metasurface is greatly reduced from 1600 to 200 μJ cm−2. Compared with single laser control, the terahertz amplitude modulation is increased by 56.3% under dual‐stimulus function.

Abstract:Optical feedback exists in most laser configurations and strongly affects laser performances depending on the feedback strength, length, and phase. In this paper, we investigate the frequency comb behaviour of a semiconductor quantum cascade laser emitting around 4.2 THz with external optical feedback. A periodic evolution of the laser inter-mode beatnote from single-line to multiple-line structures is experimentally observed with a minor change of optical feedback length (phase) on the wavelength scale. The comb stability of the laser with feedback is also measured and compared with the same laser without feedback. Furthermore, our simulations reveal that the dynamical oscillations invoked by optical feedback are responsible for the measured multiple-line beatnotes. It is found that the characteristic feedback period is determined by the half wavelength of the laser, while the comb operation is maintained at most feedback length positions. Therefore, terahertz quantum cascade laser combs are robust against the minor position vibration of the feedback mirror in practice, owing to the much smaller feedback phase change than that of common near-infrared laser diodes.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have exhibited exceptional proficiency in precisely modulating light properties within narrow wavelength spectra. However, there is a growing demand for multi-resonant metasurfaces capable of wavefront engineering across broad spectral ranges. In this study, we introduce a microcavity-assisted multi-resonant metasurface platform that integrates subwavelength meta-atoms with a specially designed distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) substrate. This platform enables the simultaneous excitation of various resonant modes within the metasurface, resulting in multiple high- Q resonances spanning from the visible to the near-infrared (NIR) regions. The developed metasurface generates up to 15 high- Q resonant peaks across the visible-NIR spectrum, achieving a maximum efficiency of 81% (70.7%) in simulation (experiment) with an average efficiency of 76.6% (54.5%) and a standard deviation of 4.1% (11.1%). Additionally, we demonstrate the versatility of the multi-resonant metasurface in amplitude, phase, and wavefront modulations at peak wavelengths. By integrating structural color printing and vectorial holographic imaging, our proposed metasurface platform shows potential for applications in optical displays and encryption. This work paves the way for the development of next-generation multi-resonant metasurfaces with broad-ranging applications in photonics and beyond.
Self-Mixing Signal Characteristics of Complex-Coupled Distributed-Feedback Terahertz Quantum-Cascade Lasers

Abstract:Self-mixing interference (SMI) in terahertz quantum cascade lasers (THz QCLs) is one of the significant approaches for coherent THz imaging and sensing techniques. Here, the output characteristics of SMI in distributed feedback (DFB) THz QCLs from the index-to the gain-coupling regimes are studied using the coupled wave theory and the multi-mode rate equation method. A mode hopping phenomenon is found to occur when the DFB coupling factor changes from index-coupling to gain-coupling, and the characteristics of the self-mixing signals of DFB-QCLs change greatly with this mode hopping. With the modulus of the coupling factor fixed and its argument varied from 0 to π/2, an extreme point of the self-mixing frequency and power signals of DFB-QCLs is found at π/9 due to the mode hopping. For index-coupling dominated DFB-QCLs, both the varying ranges of the self-mixing frequency signals and amplitudes of power signals increase with increasing DFB coupling factor argument. For gain-coupling dominated DFB-QCLs, with increasing argument value, the amplitude of the self-mixing power signal increases, but the varying range of the self-mixing frequency signal decreases. With the argument of the coupling factor fixed, we also found that the varying ranges of the self-mixing frequency signals decrease with increasing modulus for both index-coupling dominated and gain-coupling dominated DFB-QCLs. For index-coupling dominated DFB-QCLs, the amplitudes of the self-mixing power signals decrease with increasing modulus; however, the amplitudes of the self-mixing power signals of gain-coupling dominated DFB-QCLs increase. With the argument of the coupling factor fixed, for index-coupling dominated DFB-QCLs, we found that the varying ranges of the self-mixing frequency signals and amplitudes of power signals decrease with the increasing modulus. Si Metasurface Supporting Multiple Quasi-BICs for Degenerate Four-Wave Mixing

Abstract:Dielectric metasurfaces supporting quasi-bound states in the continuum (qBICs) enable high field enhancement with narrow-linewidth resonances in the visible and near-infrared ranges. The resonance emerges when distorting the meta-atom's geometry away from a symmetry-protected BIC condition and, usually, a given design can sustain one or two of these states. In this work, we introduce a silicon-on-silica metasurface that simultaneously supports up to four qBIC resonances in the near-infrared region. This is achieved by combining multiple symmetry-breaking distortions on an elliptical cylinder array. By pumping two of these resonances, the nonlinear process of degenerate four-wave mixing is experimentally realized. By comparing the nonlinear response with that of an unpatterned silicon film, the near-field enhancement inside the nanostructured dielectric is revealed. The presented results demonstrate independent geometric control of multiple qBICs and their interaction trough wave mixing processes, opening new research pathways in nanophotonics, with potential applications in information multiplexing, multi-wavelength sensing and nonlinear imaging.

Abstract:Advances in tunable metamaterials/metasurfaces facilitates their utilization in novel optical components, and lead to many breakthroughs in light tailoring by giving birth to diverse spatiotemporal dynamics. In the ascendant field of terahertz (THz) photonics, the ultrafast modulation is the fundamental process of technological advancements in high-speed wireless communications, sensing, and imaging. However, the current research efforts have been mainly devoted to studies of single functionality under the control of one stimulus, which has plateaued in terms of innovative new features. Here, building on the incident angle-induced C2 symmetry breaking of split ring pairs, we experimentally demonstrate extremely versatile, ultrafast THz switching behaviors at continuously alterable resonant states. The direction-controlled resonance hybridization provides another excellent degree of routing freedom, owing to its robustness, simplicity, and wide tunability. By leveraging such virtues, single LC mode and EIT-like resonance under normal and oblique incidence conditions are both effectively switched-off by means of photon injection. Considering the ultrashort lifetime of free carriers in MoSe2 crystal, the corresponding transient dynamics show an ultrafast recovery time within 700 ps. The strategy proposed here is a viable pathway for multidimensional THz wave manipulation, which gears up a crucial step for diversified functionalities in deployable metaphotonic devices.

Abstract:We study a two-beam self-mixing interference in a terahertz quantum cascade laser. The behavior of the self-mixing interference is simulated theoretically, and is demonstrated by designing experiments. The information of terahertz waves reflected from targets can be read out from the amplitude and phase of the self-mixing signals. Using the terahertz two-beam self-mixing interference method, a pattern on the back surface of a GaAs sample is imaged in both amplitude and phase modes, with the terahertz laser incident on the front surface. The sample thickness variation is accurately measured with a depth resolution in micron scale. Our study provides a way for achieving high precision terahertz far-field thickness measurement and imaging.
