Abstract:We propose a novel photonic harmonic mixer operating at frequencies up to the millimeter-wave (MMW) band. By combining a broadband fiber-wireless signal with high-order harmonics of a fundamental local oscillator in an optical frequency comb generator, frequency down-conversion can be implemented without using a costly ultra-broadband photodiode. It is theoretically shown that the down-conversion efficiency and the bandwidth of the mixer is highly dependent on the optical modulation indices and the fundamental frequency of comb lines. Down-conversion of a W-band (75-110 GHz) fiber-wireless signal is experimentally demonstrated. Moreover, the error vector magnitude (EVM) performance of a multigigabit quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) signal at 62.5-, 82.5-, and 102.5-GHz carrier frequencies is studied to evaluate the down-conversion efficiency. The proposed photonic harmonic mixer can be a candidate for applications in high capacity fiber-wireless communication systems.

Abstract:We propose a novel ultra-broadband reconfigurable photonic harmonic mixer functioning as a millimeter-wave down-converter for multigigabit wireless applications. Based on frequency conversion implemented by an optical frequency comb generator, the photonic mixer is able to operate up to 100GHz without high frequency RF components. The feasibility of the approach is experimentally validated by down-converting an up to 5Gbps fiber-wireless quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal from W-band (102.5GHz) to S-band (2.5GHz). The frequency response and the conversion efficiency are investigated. The experimental results show that the bandwidth of the proposed mixer is highly reconfigurable by adjusting the frequency comb generator.

Abstract:Accompany with the rapid development of millimeter-wave science and technology, sub- harmonically pumped mixers has received more and more attention. In this study, a balanced sub-harmonic fix- tuned mixer is designed based on combination of linear/nonlinear circuit simulation. It is realized based on rogers substrate process to minimize the cost and simplify the assembly. The mixer works in the 91-98 GHz band with SSB conversion loss 8~11 dB when pumped with 6 mW of local oscillator power and minimum SSB conversion loss of 8 dB is measured at 93 GHz. The measured performance of this mixer is sufficient and robust for the foreseen applications.

Abstract:Electronic frequency mixers are fundamental building blocks of electronic systems. Harmonic frequency mixing in particular enables broadband electromagnetic signal analysis across octaves of spectrum using a single local oscillator. However, conventional harmonic frequency mixers do not operate beyond hundreds of GHz to a few THz. If extended to the petahertz scale in a compact and scalable form, harmonic mixers would enable field-resolved optical signal analysis spanning octaves of spectra in a monolithic device without the need for frequency conversion using nonlinear crystals. Here we demonstrate lightwave-electronic harmonic frequency mixing beyond 0.350 PHz using plasmonic nanoantennas. We demonstrate that the mixing process enables complete, field-resolved detection of spectral content far outside that of the local oscillator, greatly extending the range of detectable frequencies compared to conventional heterodyning techniques. Our work has important implications for applications where optical signals of interest exhibit coherent femtosecond-scale dynamics spanning multiple harmonics.

Abstract:As one of the most fundamental functionalities of microwave photonics, microwave frequency mixing plays an essential role in modern radars and wireless communication systems. However, the commonly utilized intensity modulation in the systems often leads to inadequate spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) for many sought-after applications. Quantum microwave photonics technique offers a promising solution for improving SFDR in terms of higher-order harmonic distortion. In this paper, we demonstrate two types of quantum microwave photonic mixers based on the configuration of the intensity modulators: cascade-type and parallel-type. Leveraging the nonlocal RF signal encoding capability, both types of quantum microwave photonic mixers not only exhibit the advantage of dual-channel output but also present significant improvement in SFDR. Specifically, the parallel-type quantum microwave photonic mixer achieves a remarkable SFDR value of 113.6 dB.Hz1/2, which is 30 dB better than that of the cascade-type quantum microwave photonic mixer. When compared to the classical microwave photonic mixer, this enhancement reaches a notable 53.6 dB at the expense of 8 dB conversion loss. These results highlight the superiority of quantum microwave photonic mixers in the fields of microwave and millimeter-wave systems. Further applying multi-photon frequency entangled sources as optical carriers, the dual-channel microwave frequency conversion capability endowed by the quantum microwave photonic mixer can be extended to enhance the performance of multiple-paths microwave mixing which is essential for radar net systems.

Abstract:A reconfigurable and wideband photonic method is proposed for microwave photonic harmonic down-conversion based on cascaded four-wave mixing in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The cascaded four-wave mixing in SOA triggers high-order harmonics generation of local oscillator (LO) in the optical domain, and enables microwave down-conversion in the electrical domain with a low-frequency electrical LO. Compared with the conventional photonic method, ours allows microwave down-conversion operation for wide frequency range RF signal with a low-frequency electrical LO, and at the same time it avoids the requirement of complex phase control and heavy driving for the electrical LO. Moreover, it enables reconfigurable down-conversion with frequency tunability. In the demonstration, the 3~40 GHz RF signals are experimentally down-converted to IF signals below 2 GHz with a low-frequency electrical LO within the range of 5 GHz.

Abstract:In this paper, a highly linearized photonic mixer is proposed and demonstrated for Radio over Fiber (RoF) system. This scheme is based on an Intensity modulator (IM) and a dual parallel Mach--Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) in series. By adjusting the unsymmetrical power dividing rate and optimizing biases of the DPMZM, the third-order intermodulation distortion (IMD3) is suppressed. A proof-of-concept experimental verification is carried out. 10GHz RF signal is down-converted to2GHz. When the power dividing ratio is 0.1, IMD3 suppression of 33 dB is experimentally demonstrated. The spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) is improved by 21.4 dB and reaches to 116 dB.Hz4/5 as comparing with the conventional photonic mixer.
A Low Power Sub-harmonic Self-Oscillating Mixer with 16.8dB conversion loss at 310GHz in 65nm CMOS

Abstract:A 310GHz sub-harmonic self-oscillating mixer (SHSOM) with on-chip LO generation is demonstrated in this paper. The mixer consists of four Clapp oscillators that are differentially coupled to the adjacent one. Two patch antennas deliver the differential RF signal to the mixer/oscillator and with the large LO swings at the transistor terminals, high conversion gain is achieved. By controlling the phase shift of the RF signal between gate and drain, the conversion gain is boosted. Using a 65nm CMOS technology, the prototype of the SHSOM achieves 16.8 dB conversion loss and 21.3 dB noise Figure at 310GHz. The 3-dB IF bandwidth is more than 8GHz and DC power consumption is around 55mW in total.

Abstract:Frequency mixers are fundamental components in modern wireless communication and radar systems, responsible for up- and down-conversion of target radio-frequency (RF) signals. Recently, photonic-assisted RF mixers have shown unique advantages over traditional electronic counterparts, including broad operational bandwidth, flat frequency response, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. However, current integrated photonic mixers face significant challenges in achieving efficient conversion at high frequencies, especially in millimeter-wave bands, due to the limitations of existing electro-optic (EO) modulators. Additionally, high-frequency local oscillators in the millimeter-wave range are often difficult to obtain and expensive, leading to unsatisfactory cost and restricted operational bandwidth in practice. In this paper, we harness the exceptional EO property and scalability of thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) photonic platform to implement a high-performance harmonic reconfigurable millimeter-wave mixer. The TFLN photonic circuit integrates a broadband EO modulator that allows for extensive frequency coverage, and an EO frequency comb source that significantly reduces the required carrier frequency of the local oscillator. We experimentally demonstrate fully reconfigurable frequency down-conversion across a broad operational bandwidth ranging from 20 GHz to 67 GHz, with a large intermediate frequency of 20 GHz, as well as up-conversion to frequencies of up to 110 GHz. Our integrated photonic mixing system shows dramatically improved bandwidth performance, along with competitive indicators of frequency conversion efficiency and spurious suppression ratio, positioning it as a promising solution for future millimeter-wave transceivers in next-generation communication and sensing systems.

Abstract:A method of all-optical microwave mixing and bandpass filtering is proposed to achieve idler-free RF frequency conversion based on cascaded phase modulation of a broadband optical source. The variable optical carrier time-shift method is employed to selectively generate the desired RF mixing components and highly suppress the other idler frequencies. An experimental system that can perform idler-free fundamental and harmonic RF upconversions is demonstrated, and the conversion efficiency is investigated both theoretically and experimentally.

Abstract:This letter presents the design of a state-of-the-art 330-GHz subharmonic mixer (SHM) using planar Schottky diodes. Unlike conventional mixers, the embedded impedances of the diode chip are accurately extracted and then used for direct synthesis of the diode’s peripheral circuit to efficiently design SHMs with good performance. Band-stop filters (BSFs) using symmetrical open stubs are adopted to recycle RF and local oscillator (LO) energy while simplifying the circuit. At room temperature, the mixer exhibits a single sideband (SSB) conversion loss (CL) of less than 10 dB from 292 to 356 GHz, with 3 mW of LO power at 164.5 GHz. A minimum SSB CL of 7.5 dB is achieved at 334 GHz. The measured return losses at RF and IF ports are typically better than 14 dB.

Abstract:A simple quasi-optical design for LO coupling in the quasi-optical heterodyne system has been described. Due to the limited LO power available at THz bands, it is of great importance to achieve high efficiency LO power coupling to the mixer. Two elliptical mirror have been employed to couple the LO power to the SIS mixer. Measurement at nearly 500GHz shows such configuration is sufficient to pump a long junction SIS mixer.

Abstract:A novel structure consisting of an idler-free microwave photonic mixer integrated with a widely tunable and highly selective microwave photonic filter is presented, which is comprised of a spectrum-sliced broadband optical source, a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM), and a spatial light amplitude and phase processor (SLAPP). By adjusting the optical phase shift in the DPMZM, the dispersion-induced mixing power fading can be eliminated. By applying a phase processor with the SLAPP, the distortion of the mixing filter brought upon by third-order dispersion is also compensated. Experiments are performed and show that the up/down-conversion signal has a clean spectrum and the mixing filter can be tuned from 12 to 20 GHz without any change to the passband shape. The out-of-band suppression ratio of the mixing filter is more than 40 dB, and the 3 dB bandwidth is 140 MHz.

Abstract:Microwave I/Q down-converters are frequently used in image-reject super heterodyne receivers, zero intermediate frequency (zero-IF) receivers, and phase/frequency discriminators. However, due to the electronic bottleneck, conventional microwave I/Q mixers face a serious bandwidth limitation, I/Q imbalance, and even-order distortion. In this paper, photonic microwave fundamental and sub-harmonic I/Q down-converters are presented using a polarization division multiplexing dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (PDM-DPMZM). Thanks to all-optical manipulation, the proposed system features an ultra-wide operating band (7-40 GHz in the fundamental I/Q down-converter, and 10-40 GHz in the sub-harmonic I/Q down-converter) and an excellent I/Q balance (maximum 0.7 dB power imbalance and 1 degree phase imbalance). The conversion gain, noise figure (NF), even-order distortion, and spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) are also improved by LO power optimization and balanced detection. Using the proposed system, a high image rejection ratio is demonstrated for a super heterodyne receiver, and good EVMs over a wide RF power range is demonstrated for a zero-IF receiver. The proposed broadband photonic microwave fundamental and sub-harmonic I/Q down-converters may find potential applications in multi-band satellite, ultra-wideband radar and frequency-agile electronic warfare systems. Abstract:In this paper, a terahertz wideband sub-harmonic mixer based on the Schottky anti-parallel diodes pair and MASTER technology is presented. The mixer circuit is fabricated on a 0.05mm quartz substrate including Schottky anti-parallel diodes pair, RF/LO transition, IF matching networks and filtering circuits. The diode circuit is fabricated on a quartz substrate directly by MASTER technology. The research analyzed the topology of sub-harmonic mixer, device modeling of Schottky diodes, the 3D electromagnetic passive circuits and the mixer circuitry with optimum performance. Conversion loss of the mixer is less than 10dB range from 513GHz to 705GHz when the LO pumped power was 5dBm at 260GHz to 400GHz.
