Abstract:Tortuosity is an important parameter used in areas such as vascular medicine,neurobiology,and the field of soil permeability and diffusion to express the mass transport in porous media.It is a function of the porosity and the shape and distribution of particles.In this paper,the tortuosity of cubic particles is calculated.With the assumption that the porous medium is homogeneous,the problem is converted to the micro-level over a unit cell,and geometry models of flow paths are proposed.In three-dimensional（3D） cells,the flow paths are too complicated to define.Hence,the 3D models are converted to two-dimensional（2D） models to simplify the calculation process.It is noticed that the path in the 2D model is shorter than that in the 3D model.As a result,triangular particles and the interaction are also taken into consideration to account for the longer distance respectively.We have proposed quadrate particle and interaction（QI） and quadrate and triangular particle（QT） models with cubic particles.Both models have shown good agreement with the experimental data.It is also found that they can predict the toruosities of some kinds of porous media,like freshwater sediment and Negev chalk.
Pore-scale statistics of flow and transport through porous media

Abstract:Flow in porous media is known to be largely affected by pore morphology. In this work, we investigate the effects of pore geometry on the transport and spatial correlations of flow through porous media in two distinct pore structures arising from three-dimensional assemblies of overlapping and nonoverlapping spheres. Using high-resolution direct numerical simulations (DNS), we perform Eulerian and Lagrangian analysis of the flow and transport characteristics in porous media. We show that the Eulerian velocity distributions change from nearly exponential to Gaussian distributions as porosity increases. A stretched exponential distribution can be used to represent this behavior for a wide range of porosities. Evolution of Lagrangian velocities is studied for the uniform injection rule. Evaluation of tortuosity and trajectory length distributions of each porous medium shows that the model of overlapping spheres results in higher tortuosity and more skewed trajectory length distributions compared to the model of nonoverlapping spheres. Wider velocity distribution and higher tortuosity for overlapping spheres model give rise to non-Fickian transport while transport in nonoverlapping spheres model is found to be Fickian. Particularly, for overlapping spheres model our analysis of first-passage time distribution shows that the transport is very similar to those observed for sandstone. Finally, using three-dimensional (3D) velocity field obtained by DNS at the pore-scale, we quantitatively show that despite the randomness of pore-space, the spatially fluctuating velocity field and the 3D pore-space distribution are strongly correlated for a range of porous media from relatively homogeneous monodisperse sphere packs to Castlegate sandstone.
Reconstruction of 3D Porous Media Using Multiple-Point Statistics Based on a 2D Training Image

Abstract:Macroscopic transport properties of porous media essentially rely on the geometry and topology of their pore space. The premise of predicting these transport properties is to construct an accurate 3D pore space. To date the methods of modeling porous media are divided into two main groups, direct measurements by some equipment and stochastic statistical methods. Direct measurements of pore structure can be acquired with current equipment such as X-ray computed tomography and laser scanning confocal microscopy, but the unavailability of the equipment and the high cost of the measurement make their widespread application impossible. Many stochastic statistical methods, such as truncated Gaussian random field and simulated annealing methods, reconstruct 3D porous media based on some 2D thin sections by means of lower-order statistical functions. However these functions cannot reproduce the long-range connectivity of pore structure. Therefore, this paper will present a stochastic technique of reconstructing 3D pore space using multiple-point statistics with the purpose of solving the proposed problems. The single normal equation simulation algorithm (SNESIM), one of the most common methods for discrete variable simulation in multiple-point statistics, is the main tool to reproduce the long-range feature of pore space. To test the method, Berea sandstone was used as a sample. In the simulation process, a 2D thin section was taken as the training image for providing patterns of pore structure and some pixels were extracted from it as the conditioning data. The models were reconstructed using the SNESIM algorithm that serves as the simulation engine. In order to test the accuracy of these reconstructed models, pore geometry and topology and transport properties of the reconstructed models were compared with those of the real model obtained by X-ray computed tomography scanning. The comparison result shows that the reconstructed models are good agreement with the real model obtained by X-ray computed tomography scanning in the two-point correlation function, the pore space features and single- and two-phase flow permeabilities, which verifies that the long-range connectivity of pore space can be reproduced by this method. Comparing with other stochastic methods, a more accurate stochastic technique of reconstructing 3D porous media is put forward when only some 2D thin sections are available.

Abstract:The paper discusses local porosity theory and its relation with other geometric characterization methods for porous media such as correlation functions and contact distributions. Special emphasis is placed on the charcterization of geometric observables through Hadwigers theorem in stochastic geometry. The four basic Minkowski functionals are introduced into local porosity theory, and for the first time a relationship is established between the Euler characteristic and the local percolation probabilities. Local porosity distributions and local percolation probabilities provide a scale dependent characterization of the microstructure of porous media that can be used in an effective medium approach to predict transport.

Abstract:A quantitative comparison of the pore space geometry for three natural sandstones is presented. The comparison is based on local porosity theory which provides a geometric characterization of stochastic microstructures. The characterization focusses on porosity and connectivity fluctuations. Porosity fluctuations are measured using local porosity distributions while connectivity fluctuations are measured using local percolation probabilities. We report the first measurement of local percolation probability functions for experimentally obtained threedimensional pore space reconstructions. Our results suggest to use local porosity distributions and percolation probabilities as a quantitative method to compare microstructures between models and experiment.

Abstract:The random geometry of real porous media is analyzed with the objective of reproducing it numerically; adequate algorithms are proposed for consolidated materials which may be statistically homogeneous or not, and may possess more than one solid phase; random packings of star-shape grains are built to mimic non-consolidated materials which are usually obtained by settling processes. The macroscopic properties of all these media can be deduced by solving the local partial differential equations which govern the phenomena; finite difference schemes are used most of the time. A number of physical situations have been already addressed. Elementary transport phenomena such as convection, diffusion and convection-diffusion provide the basic illustrations of our methodology. Multiphase flows is an exception in the sense that the resolution is achieved by means of a lattice-Boltzmann algorithm. The electrokinetic phenomena associated with the motion of an electrolyte through a charged medium are addressed close to equilibrium, in the limit of small dzeta potentials and thick double layers. Industrial processes may involve deposition and/or dissolution of a solute; first-order reactions of a single solute could be successfully analyzed and rationalized with the help of the Pe ́clet and the Damko ̈hler numbers. Similarly, the macroscopic mechanical properties of the solid matrix of a porous medium can be obtained by solving the elastostatic equations; macroscopic coefficients such as the equivalent Young’s modulus were derived for a number of structures. Some tentative remarks conclude this review. This article contains 289 references.

Abstract:Natural porous media are generally heterogeneous and anisotropic. The structure of porous media plays a vital role and is often the source of their heterogeneity and anisotropy. In physical processes such as fluid flow in porous media, a small number of dominant features, here referred to as wide channels, are responsible for the majority of the flow. The thickness and orientation of these channels often determine the permeability characteristics of the media. Typically, identifying such dominant features requires extensive and costly simulations. Here, we propose a prompt approach based on geometric properties derived from three‐dimensional (3D) images. The size or radius of the dominant features is obtained via distance maps, and their orientations are determined using Principal Component Analysis. Subsequently, we visualize these dominant features with color and color brightness according to their orientation and size, together with their location and distribution in 3D space. The combined visualization of anisotropy (orientation) and heterogeneity (size) in a single plot provides a straightforward way to enhance our understanding of pore structure characteristics. Besides, we propose a refined stereographic projection method to statistically illustrate both heterogeneity and anisotropy. Based on these insights, we further present a potential approach to reduce model size in numerical simulations, significantly reducing computational costs while preserving essential characteristics.

Abstract:The construction of a faithful 3D pore space model of a porous medium that could reproduce the macroscopic behavior of that medium is of great interest in various fields including medicine, material science, hydrology and petroleum engineering. A computationally efficient algorithm is developed that uses the probability perturbation method and sequential multiple-point statistics simulations to generate 3D stochastic and equiprobable representations of random porous media when only a 2D thin section image is available. By employing the probability perturbation method as a gradual deformation technique, the pore patterns of a single 2D image are deformed to generate a series of 2D stochastically simulated images. The 3D pore structure is then generated by simply stacking the 2D-simulated images. The quality of the 3D reconstruction is critically dependent on the rate of deformation and a simple general procedure for choosing this parameter is presented. Various criteria such as porosity, two-point auto-correlation function, multiple-point connectivity function, local percolation probability, absolute permeability obtained by lattice-Boltzmann method (LBM), formation factor and two-phase relative permeability calculations are used to validate the results. The method is tested on two random porous solids; Berea Sandstone and synthetic Silica, for which directly measured 3D micro-CT images are available. The stochastically reconstructed 3D pore space preserves the low- and high-order spatial statistics, the macroscopic flow properties and the microstructure of the 3D micro-CT images.

Abstract:Heterogeneous structures represent an important new frontier for 21st century engineering. Human tissues, composites, ‘smart’ and multi-material objects are all physically manifest in the world as three-dimensional (3D) objects with varying surface, internal and volumetric properties and geometries. For instance, a tissue engineered structure, such as bone scaffold for guided tissue regeneration, can be described as a heterogeneous structure consisting of 3D extra-cellular matrices (made from biodegradable material) and seeded donor cells and/or growth factors. The design and fabrication of such heterogeneous structures requires new techniques for solid models to represent 3D heterogeneous objects with complex material properties. This paper presents a representation of model density and porosity based on stochastic geometry. While density has been previously studied in the solid modeling literature, porosity is a relatively new problem. Modeling porosity of bio-materials is critical for developing replacement bone tissues. The paper uses this representation to develop an approach to modeling of porous, heterogeneous materials and provides experimental data to validate the approach. The authors believe that their approach introduces ideas from the stochastic geometry literature to a new set of engineering problems. It is hoped that this paper stimulates researchers to find new opportunities that extend these ideas to be more broadly applicable for other computational geometry, graphics and computer-aided design problems.

Abstract:Stochastic models and Monte Carlo algorithms for simulation of flow through porous media beyond the small hydraulic conductivity fluctuation assumptions are developed. The hydraulic conductivity is modelled as an isotropic random field with a lognormal distribution and prescribed correlation or spectral functions. It is sampled by a Monte Carlo method based on a randomized spectral representation. The Darcy and continuity equations with the random hydraulic conductivity are solved numerically, using the successive over relaxation method in order to extract statistical characteristics of the flow. Hybrid averaging is used: we combine spatial and ensemble avergaing to get efficient numerical procedure. We provide some conceptual and numerical comparison of various stochastic simulation techniques, and focus on the prediction of applicability of the randomized spectral models derived under the assumption of small hydraulic conductivity fluctuations.

Abstract:Excursion sets of Gaussian random fields are used to model the three-dimensional (3D) morphology of differently manufactured porous glasses (PGs), which vary with respect to their mean pore widths measured by mercury intrusion porosimetry. The stochastic 3D model is calibrated by means of volume fractions and two-point coverage probability functions estimated from tomographic image data. Model validation is performed by comparing model realizations and image data in terms of morphological descriptors which are not used for model fitting. For this purpose, we consider mean geodesic tortuosity and constrictivity of the pore space, quantifying the length of the shortest transportation paths and the strength of bottleneck effects, respectively. Additionally, a stereological approach for parameter estimation is presented, i.e., the 3D model is calibrated using merely two-dimensional (2D) cross-sections of the 3D image data. Doing so, on average, a comparable goodness of fit is achieved as well. The variance of the calibrated model parameters is discussed, which is estimated on the basis of randomly chosen, individual 2D cross-sections. Moreover, interpolating between the model parameters calibrated to differently manufactured glasses enables the predictive simulation of virtual but realistic PGs with mean pore widths that have not yet been manufactured. The predictive power is demonstrated by means of cross-validation. Abstract:Abstract Fine-grained sandstones, siltstones, and shales have become increasingly important to satisfy the ever-growing global energy demands. Of particular current interest are shale rocks, which are mudstones made up of organic and inorganic constituents of varying pore sizes. These materials exhibit high heterogeneity, low porosity, varying chemical composition and low pore connectivity. Due to the complexity and the importance of such materials, many experimental, theoretical and computational efforts have attempted to quantify the impact of rock features on fluids diffusivity and ultimately on permeability. In this study, we introduce a stochastic kinetic Monte Carlo approach developed to simulate fluid transport. The features of this approach allow us to discuss the applicability of 2D vs 3D models for the calculation of transport properties. It is found that a successful model should consider realistic 3D pore networks consisting of pore bodies that communicate via pore throats, which however requires a prohibitive amount of computational resources. To overcome current limitations, we present a rigorous protocol to stochastically generate synthetic 3D pore networks in which pore features can be isolated and varied systematically and individually. These synthetic networks do not correspond to real sample scenarios but are crucial to achieve a systematic evaluation of the pore features on the transport properties. Using this protocol, we quantify the contribution of the pore network’s connectivity, porosity, mineralogy, and pore throat width distribution on the diffusivity of supercritical methane. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to rank the significance of the various network features on methane diffusivity. Connectivity is found to be the most important descriptor, followed by pore throat width distribution and porosity. Based on such insights, recommendations are provided on possible technological approaches to enhance fluid transport through shale rocks and equally complex pore networks. The purpose of this work is to identify the significance of various pore network characteristics using a stochastic KMC algorithm to simulate the transport of fluids. Our findings could be relevant for applications that make use of porous media, ranging from catalysis to radioactive waste management, and from environmental remediation to shale gas production.

Abstract:The simple entropic method to statistical reconstructing of heterogeneous three-dimensional media from a single two-dimensional image is briefly reported. We apply the entropic descriptor quantifying spatial inhomogeneity that depends on length scale. The multiscale reconstructing procedure is boosted when we start from the synthetic 3D configuration. It is randomly generated with the overlapping spheres of a radius depending on the structure considered. In our scenario, the simulated annealing terminates when all assigned temperature loops are completed. Thus, the quality of the results for different samples can be fairly compared. The reliable 3D reconstructions of porous sandstone, ceramics and carbonate samples are obtained. They suggest the entropic method is a promising approach, which offers a kind of compromise between the computational efficiency and the accuracy of the statistical reconstructions. Furthermore, this approach is versatile enough to be extended for any multiphase medium.

Abstract:Understanding the connection between pore structure and NMR behavior of fluid-saturated porous rock is essential in interpreting the results of NMR measurements in the field or laboratory and in establishing correlations between NMR parameters and petrophysical properties. In this paper we use random-walk simulation to study NMR relaxation and time-dependent diffusion in 3D stochastic replicas of real porous media. The microstructures are generated using low-order statistical information (porosity, void–void autocorrelation function) obtained from 2D images of thepore space. Pore size distributions obtained directly by a 3D pore space partitioning method and indirectly by inversion of NMR relaxation data are compared for the first time. For surface relaxation conditions typical of reservoir rock, diffusional coupling between pores of different size is observed to cause considerable deviations between the two distributions. Nevertheless, the pore space correlation length and the size of surface asperity are mirrored in the NMR relaxation data for the media studied. This observation is used to explain the performance of NMR-based permeability correlations. Additionally, the early time behavior of the time-dependent diffusion coefficient is shown to reflect the average pore surface-to-volume ratio. For sufficiently high values of the self-diffusion coefficient, the tortuosity of the pore space is also recovered from the long-time behavior of the time-dependent diffusion coefficient, even in the presence of surface relaxation. Finally, the simulations expose key limitations of the stochastic reconstruction method, and allow suggestions for future development to be made.

Abstract:The reconstruction of porous media is of great importance in predicting fluid transport properties, which are widely used in various fields such as catalysis, oil recovery, medicine and aging of building materials. The real three-dimensional structural data of porous media are helpful to describe the irregular topologic structures of porous media. By using multiple-point statistics (MPS) to extract the characteristics of real porous media acquired from micro computed tomography (micro-CT) scanning, the probabilities of structural characteristics of pore spaces are obtained first, and then reproduced in the reconstructed regions. One solution to overcome the anisotropy of training images is to use real 3D volume data as a training image (TI). The CPU cost and memory burden brought up by 3D simulations can be reduced greatly by selecting the optimal multiple-grid template size that is determined by the entropy of a TI. Moreover, both soft data and hard data are integrated in MPS simulation to improve the accuracy of reconstructed images. The variograms and permeabilities, computed by lattice Boltzmann method, of the reconstructed images and the target image obtained from real volume data are compared, showing that the structural characteristics of reconstructed porous media using our method are similar to those of real volume data.

Rescaling Relations between Two- and Three-dimensional Local Porosity Distributions for Natural and Artificial Porous Media

Abstract:Local porosity distributions for a three-dimensional porous medium and local porosity distributions for a two-dimensional plane-section through the medium are generally different. However, for homogeneous and isotropic media having finite correlation-lengths, a good degree of correspondence between the two sets of local porosity distributions can be obtained by rescaling lengths, and the mapping associating corresponding distributions can be found from two-dimensional observations alone. The agreement between associated distributions is good as long as the linear extent of the measurement cells involved is somewhat larger than the correlation length, and it improves as the linear extent increases. A simple application of the central limit theorem shows that there must be a correspondence in the limit of very large measurement cells, because the distributions from both sets approach normal distributions. A normal distribution has two independent parameters: the mean and the variance. If the sample is large enough, LPDs from both sets will have the same mean. Therefore corresponding distributions are found by matching variances of two- and three-dimensional local porosity distributions. The variance can be independently determined from correlation functions. Equating variances leads to a scaling relation for lengths in this limit. Three particular systems are examined in order to show that this scaling behavior persists at smaller length-scales.

Impact of spatially correlated pore-scale heterogeneity on drying porous media

Abstract:We study the effect of spatially-correlated heterogeneity on isothermal drying of porous media. We combine a minimal pore-scale model with microfluidic experiments with the same pore geometry. Our simulated drying behavior compare favorably with experiments, considering the large sensitivity of the emergent behavior to the uncertainty associated with even small manufacturing errors. We show that increasing the correlation length in particle sizes promotes preferential drying of clusters of large pores, prolonging liquid connectivity and surface wetness and thus higher drying rates for longer periods. Our findings improve our quantitative understanding of how pore-scale heterogeneity impacts drying, which plays a role in a wide range of processes ranging from fuel cells to curing of paints and cements to global budgets of energy, water and solutes in soils.

Connections Between Topology and Macroscopic Mechanical Properties of Three-Dimensional Open-Pore Materials

Abstract:This work addresses a number of fundamental questions regarding the topological description of materials characterized by a highly porous three-dimensional structure with bending as the major deformation mechanism. Highly efficient finite-element beam models were used for generating data on the mechanical behavior of structures with different topologies, ranging from highly coordinated bcc to Gibson–Ashby structures. Random cutting enabled a continuous modification of average coordination numbers ranging from the maximum connectivity to the percolation-cluster transition of the 3D network. The computed macroscopic mechanical properties–Young's modulus, yield strength, and Poisson's ratio–combined with the cut fraction, average coordination number, and statistical information on the local coordination numbers formed a database consisting of more than 100 different structures. Via data mining, the interdependencies of topological parameters, and relationships between topological parameters with mechanical properties were discovered. A scaled genus density could be identified, which assumes a linear dependency on the average coordination number. Feeding statistical information about the local coordination numbers of detectable junctions with coordination number of 3 and higher to an artificial neural network enables the determination the average coordination number without any knowledge of the fully connected structure. This parameter serves as a common key for determining the cut fraction, the scaled genus density, and the macroscopic mechanical properties. The dependencies of macroscopic Young's modulus, yield strength, and Poisson's ratio on the cut fraction (or average coordination number) could be represented as master curves, covering a large range of structures from a coordination number of 8 (bcc reference) to 1.5, close to the percolation-cluster transition. The suggested fit functions with a single adjustable parameter agree with the numerical data within a few percent error. Artificial neural networks allow a further reduction of the error by at least a factor of 2. All data for macroscopic Young's modulus and yield strength are covered by a single master curve. This leads to the important conclusion that the relative loss of macroscopic strength due to pinching-off of ligaments corresponds to that of macroscopic Young's modulus. Experimental data in literature support this unexpected finding.

Abstract:To predict the macroscopic properties (e.g., transport, electromagnetic, and mechanical properties) of porous media, it is necessary to have a three‐dimensional (3D) representation of porous media. We reconstruct the geologically realistic 3D structure of Fontainebleau sandstone based on the two‐dimensional (2D) thin sections by using the multiple‐point statistics method. For this method, the size of template is an important parameter that reflects the perceived scale of spatial structure of porous media. In this paper, we take advantage of entropy method to obtain the appropriate size of the template, which is proven to be correct and feasible. The reconstruction method proposed by us combines successive 2D MPS simulations as well as 3D MPS simulation, which takes account into the pore structure information (e.g., heterogeneity and connectivity) both intralayer and interlayer. This reconstruction method is tested on Fontainebleau sandstone for which 3D images from micro‐CT scanning are available. Applying local percolation theory analysis, this new approach can depict the expected patterns of geological heterogeneities. In addition, it also can well reproduce a high degree of connectivity of the pore space better than other reconstruction methods based on lower‐order statistics. Abstract:The problem of diffusion in a porous medium with a spatially varying porosity is considered. The particular microstructure analyzed comprises a collection of impenetrable spheres, though the methods developed are general. Two different approaches for calculating the effective diffusion coefficient as a function of the microstructure are presented. The first is a deterministic approach based on the method of multiple scales; the second is a stochastic approach for small volume fraction of spheres based on matched asymptotic expansions. We compare the two approaches, and we show good agreement between them in a number of example configurations.
