Abstract:10565 Background: Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality globally, with increasing incidence rates. The major governing cancer societies identify cancer risk factors into five broad groups (infectious disease, environmental/chemical pollutants, genetics, behavioral and ultraviolet radiation). However, little attention has been dedicated to understanding the potential primordial risk of the early psychosocial environment. Life course epidemiology is a framework that considers how the harmful effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) contribute to the development of disease later in life. It is postulated that such stressful events that occur during a critical period of development likely trigger increased inflammatory responses, which could ultimately contribute to the manifestation of chronic diseases such as cancer. While there are studies that have reported an association between ACEs and cancer, this relationship has yet to be systematically analyzed. The objectives of this study are to a) meta-analyze the pooled association of the presence of at least one ACE, b) the burden of different ACEs, and c) specific ACE types, and their association with cancer in adulthood. Methods: This systematic review compiled studies from PubMed, EMBASE, Medline, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Biological Psychiatry, and grey literature up to Mar 16, 2023, and was registered on PROSPERO. Observational studies with a comparator group that assessed ACEs that occurred prior to age 18, and diagnosed cancer ≥21 years of age were included. Two review authors independently screened articles, extracted data, assessed risk of bias using QUIPS, and conducted GRADE assessment. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using multilevel linear random-effects models. Results: Of the total 39,658 articles, our search identified 26 studies, of which 23 studies (356,519 participants, 9 countries) were eligible for meta-analysis. The occurrence of ≥1 ACE(s) was associated with cancer (OR=1.16, 95% CI: 1.08-1.24, I2 = 58.7%), compared to participants with no ACEs. As the number of ACEs increased, the odds of cancer increased (≥4 ACEs compared to no ACEs OR=1.30, 1.04-1.62, p-trend = 0.0003). Specific ACE types did explain a significant amount of heterogeneity (F = 2.02, p = 0.04). Parental or sibling death (OR=1.88, 1.29-2.73), household mental illness (OR=1.36, 1.14-1.61), sexual abuse (OR=1.20, 1.04-1.37), and physical abuse (OR=1.18, 1.05-1.34) had the largest associations with cancer. Conclusions: Our findings confirm ACEs as important risk factors for cancer in adulthood. These findings have important clinical and public health implications to develop primary and secondary prevention and treatment strategies. Also, further research is warranted to explore this relationship on the epigenetic level, and among specific cancers.

Abstract:Abstract Background and Aims: Childhood and adolescent/young adult (AYA) cancer survivors are at increased risk for emotional distress, chronic health conditions, and premature mortality compared to peers with no cancer history. Some, but not all, of this increased risk is explained by cancer- and treatment-related exposures. Because cancer treatment remains necessary to achieve cure, it is critical to identify and target other factors to reduce sub-optimal outcomes. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events occurring during childhood, such as experiencing violence and/or neglect, which are associated with poor mental health, chronic health conditions, and premature mortality in the adult general population. Little is known on how ACEs impact health in children and AYAs with cancer. Research indicates that otherwise healthy individuals exposed to ACEs experience fewer adverse health outcomes if they possess resilience, which can be learned. This provides a potential target for intervention. This pilot study aimed to identify demographic characteristics associated with ACEs and resilience as well as associations between ACEs, resilience, and the presence of chronic medical conditions, mental health issues, and substance abuse in children and AYAs with cancer. Methods: Childhood and AYA leukemia and lymphoma patients undergoing cancer treatment at the University of Chicago were included for analysis (N=38, 55.26% female, 50% non-Hispanic white, mean age at assessment 14.74±6.97 years). Participants ≤17 years old completed the study with one parent/caregiver. ACEs were measured using age-specific instruments adapted from the original ACEs study by Kaiser Permanente and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Resilience was analyzed using age-specific instruments provided by the Resilience Research Centre, and resilience scores were categorized as low (≤62), moderate (63-70), high (71-76), and exceptional (≥77). For participants 0-11 years old, a parent/guardian completed the study on their behalf. 12-17 year old participants and their parent/guardian both completed the study, and participants over 18 completed the study alone. Descriptive statistics characterized demographic, biologic, treatment, and health behavior variables. The association between total scores for ACEs and resilience were measured using Pearson's correlation. Regression analysis assessed ACEs (logistic model) and resilience scores (linear model) adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, household income, and insurance type. Participants were then stratified, and two sample t-tests compared potential outcomes based on ACE exposures. Results: 23 participants (60.53%) reported prior ACEs (mean total number of ACEs 1.45±1.77; range 1-7), and the mean resilience score for participants was 73.76±9.61 (range 49-85) indicating high resilience overall. Regression analyses showed the odds of reporting ACEs increased with age (OR: 1.18; 95% CI: 1.02-1.37), while resilience scores decreased with age (β=0.76; t(32)=-2.74, p=0.01) holding other variables constant. Sex, race/ethnicity, household income, and insurance type were not associated with ACEs or resilience scores. There was a strong negative correlation between the total number of ACEs and resilience, r(36)=-0.57, p<0.01; the total number of ACEs explained 32% of the variation in resilience scores. Compared to participants who did not report prior ACEs, those with ACEs were more likely to report chronic medical conditions, t(31.41)=-2.47, p=0.02, prior psychiatric diagnoses or mental health issues, t(34.16)=-2.13, p=0.04, as well as substance abuse t(31.41)=-2.47, p=0.02. Conclusions: ACEs were associated with endorsement of chronic medical conditions, mental health issues, and substance abuse in our sample of childhood and AYA patients currently receiving cancer treatment. As the total number of ACEs increased, resilience scores decreased for participants. The results of this study provide the groundwork for further investigations of ACEs and resilience in large cohorts of childhood and AYA cancer patients and survivors. This future work could provide valuable information for creating and implementing interventions designed for childhood and AYA cancer patients and survivors who have experienced ACEs, thus potentially reducing additional morbidity and premature mortality for these high-risk patients. Abstract:Purpose: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been shown to be associated with increased risk of mortality. The biobehavioral mechanisms linking adverse events and survival in cancer patients remain unclear. The aims of the study were to: (1) examine the rates and types of early adverse events in patients diagnosed with cancer; (2) investigate the association of adverse events with circulating cytokines, representing immune status of the patient; and (3) test whether immune markers mediated the association between early adverse events and survival while adjusting for other factors that are associated with immunity (e.g., fatigue) and survival (e.g., depression). Patients and methods: The patients were recruited from an outpatient oncology clinic. Patients were administered a battery of questionnaires including the Traumatic Events Survey and the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression scale. Blood was collected and serum levels of cytokines were assessed to characterize immune status. Descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U tests and Cox regression were performed to address study aims. Results: Of the 408 patients, 66% reported at least one ACE. After adjusting for demographic, disease-specific factors, and psychological/behavioral factors; having had a major upheaval between parents during childhood or adolescence was associated with poorer survival [β = -0.702, HR = 0.496, p = 0.034]. Lower levels of interleukin-2 (IL-2) explained, in part, the link between this early adverse event and poorer survival as when IL-2 was entered into the model, a major upheaval between one's parents and survival was no longer significant [β = -0.612, HR = 0.542, p = 0.104]. Conclusion: Having experienced an ACE was associated with lower IL-2 levels-a growth factor for anti-inflammatory T-regulatory lymphocytes-central in contemporary immunotherapy, as well as poorer survival in those diagnosed with cancer. Since lower IL-2 levels also explained, in part, the link between the ACE involving parental upheaval and survival, there is support for a psychoneuroimmunological model of disease course in this vulnerable population.
Association between adverse childhood experiences and self-reported health-risk behaviors among cancer survivors: A population-based study

Abstract:Aims Existing evidence shows that people who report Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are more likely to exhibit health-risk behaviors. However, limited research on this topic pertains to oncology population. We aim to address this knowledge gap by estimating the prevalence of ACEs and investigating their association with self-reported health-risk behaviors among adult cancer survivors living in the U.S. Methods We conducted a secondary analysis using cross-sectional data from the 2021 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System ACE module. We included 4,126 adults, aged ≥18 years, with a history of cancer. The outcome variable was self-reported health-risk behaviors, which included cigarette smoking, e-cigarette use, and binge alcohol drinking. Self-reported ACEs history was the primary independent variable, comprised of 11 questions regarding child abuse and dysfunctional households. We conducted descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression to describe the relationship between the ACE history and health-risk behaviors. Results Overall, 84.2% of cancer survivors self-reported as White, 58.4% were women, and 76.6% were aged 65+ years. Nearly two-thirds of the sample (63.2%) self-reported at least one ACE (prior to age 18) and 21.7% engaged in ≥1 health-risk-behaviors, such as cigarette smoking, binge alcohol drinking, or e-cigarette use. Experiencing ≥3 ACEs was associated with 145% increased odds of reporting at least one health-risk behavior (OR = 2.45, 95% CI [1.78–3.38]) when compared to those without a history of ACEs. Besides, survivors who were younger, divorced, less educated, and had low income had higher odds of reporting at least one health-risk behavior. Conclusions Overall, a history of ACEs is associated with health-risk behaviors. These all can negatively impact cancer survivors’ overall well-being. Early screening for ACE during oncologic visits can be a protective measure for preventing health-risk behaviors among cancer survivors.

Abstract:Background: The impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs: e.g., abuse, neglect and/or household dysfunction experienced before age 18) and resilience on risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) has not previously been investigated in adult survivors of childhood cancer. Methods: We conducted a nested case-control study among long-term, adult-aged survivors of childhood cancer from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS). Self-report questionnaires ascertained ACEs and resilience, and scores were compared between cases with serious/life-threatening CVD and controls without CVD matched on demographic and cardiotoxic treatment factors. Results: Among 95 cases and 261 controls, the mean ACE score was 1.4 for both groups; 53.4% of survivors endorsed ≥1 ACE. There was no association between ACEs or resilience and CVD in adjusted models. Conclusions: ACEs and resilience do not appear to contribute to CVD risk for adult survivors of childhood cancer with cardiotoxic treatment exposures. Impact: Although not associated with CVD in this population, ACEs are associated with serious health issues in other populations. Therefore, future studies could investigate effects of ACEs on other health outcomes affecting childhood cancer survivors.

Abstract:Purpose: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are a group of distressing and traumatic occurrences that occur during a person's early years, such as abuse, neglect, family problems, or violent interactions. Regardless of whether they occur throughout a person's developmental stage, these occurrences can have a long-term and negative impact on an individual's emotional well-being and general health. This study investigates the profound connection between early hardship and an individual's mental health. This scholarly review conducts a comprehensive examination of the objectives that support its research endeavour. In addition, this research will offer insight on the complex nature of ACEs and their significant influence on mental well-being consequences. Design: The material for this study was gathered from a variety of secondary sources, including journals, book chapters, conference proceedings, and other online sites. The body of research has been thoroughly examined and summarized. It is also used to identify the research objectives and gaps in the field. Findings: This meta-analysis investigates the multi-faceted connections between adverse childhood experiences and mental health. It underlines the critical need for interdisciplinary efforts to address ACEs and their effects on mental health, calling for early intervention and support networks to break the cycle of adversity and develop mental health resilience among affected persons. Originality/Value: This study examines current literature and incorporates secondary data acquired from a variety of online resources, such as research journals, technical book chapters, conference papers, and a few websites. All the articles selected were recent, from respected publications, and pertinent to the planned task. A concerted effort is made to select a study topic and carry out the research. Abstract:Background: Investigations have shown the different impacts that ACEs have on an individual's adult life, on both physical and mental health, but they have not yet shown the issue of the influence of ACEs on adults and young adults. Objective/Participants and Setting: This systematic review, performed according to the PRISMA norms and guidelines, intended to understand the most frequent outcomes of adverse childhood experiences in the life of young adults and adults. Methods: Studies were identified through multiple literature search databases at EBSCOhost, Web of Science, and PubMed April 2023, and a total of 279 studies, published between 1999 and 2002, were excluded, 256 because of multiple factors: being duplicates, showing statistical analysis with correlations only, being systematic reviews or case studies, comprising individuals under the age of 18, and not meeting the intended theme; ultimately, we selected for the review a total of 23 studies. Results and conclusions: The impacts of the various articles are subdivided into three main themes: antisocial and criminal behaviour; sexual Behaviour and intimate partner violence; and attachment, quality of life, and therapeutic alliance.

Abstract:Objectives: To explore the incidence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in breast cancer survivors and potential associations with long-term treatment-related sequelae. Sample & setting: English-speaking breast cancer survivors three or more years from diagnosis with complete treatment response (N = 120) were recruited prior to scheduled survivorship clinic visits. Methods & variables: Participants in this cross-sectional observational feasibility study rated anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep disturbance, cognitive issues, resilience, and ACEs (experienced prior to age 18 years). Blood samples were analyzed for inflammatory and epigenetic biomarkers. Results: ACEs assessment was feasible. Higher ACE scores correlated with greater fatigue, anxiety, and depression, and with lower cognitive function (p < 0.05). Resilience was positively associated with cognitive function and negatively associated with fatigue, anxiety, and depression. Implications for nursing: There is evidence for the impact of ACEs on long-term treatment-related sequelae in women with breast cancer. Oncology nurses should consider incorporating ACEs assessment into the workflow for women receiving survivorship care.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are stressful life events that are associated with an increased risk of depression. Depression is experienced by 25% of cancer survivors in the US. While previous studies have examined the associations between ACEs and depression in the general population, studies on cancer survivors are lacking. We aimed to examine the predictors of depression with a primary focus on ACEs among cancer survivors. Methods: Using a cross-sectional data from the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System for 19,241 cancer survivors aged 18 and above, we categorized ACEs based on severity. The ACE categories (zero, one, two-three, ≥four) included questions assessing exposure to eight types of ACEs before age 18 years. The outcome is self-reported history of depression diagnosis (yes/no). Weighted multivariable logistic regression models estimated odds of depression by ACEs as the primary variable and covariates were age, gender, smoking status, income, education, marital status, body mass index, health status and race. Results: In this sample of cancer survivors, 41%, 22%, 21% and 16% reported having experienced zero, one, two-three, and >4 ACEs respectively. Personal history of depression was reported by 21% of survey respondents. In the adjusted model, survivors with 1 ACE (aOR: 1.6, 95% CI. 1.2- 2.0), 2-3 ACEs (aOR: 1.7, 95% CI. 1.3- 2.1), or >=4 ACES (aOR: 4.4, 95% CI. 3.4- 5.7) had higher odds of depression compared with those with zero ACEs. Additional notable predictors of higher odds of depression are younger age, 18-39 (aOR: 2.7, 95% CI. 1.8- 4.0), middle age, 40-64 (aOR: 1.6, 95% CI. 1.3- 1.9) compared with those aged 65 and older; females (aOR: 2.1, 95% CI. 1.7- 2.5) compared with males; obese respondents (aOR: 1.5, 95% CI. 1.2- 1.9) compared with respondents with normal body mass index; current smokers (aOR: 1.5, 95% CI. 1.2- 2.0) compared with respondents who never smoked; and poor or fair health status (aOR: 3.2, 95% CI. 2.6- 3.9) compared with respondents with excellent/good health status. Conclusion: Adult cancer survivors who experience ACEs as children represent an important targeted prevention group to reduce risk of depression. Variation by age, obesity, female gender, current smoking status, and poor health associated factors that may reduce the risk of depression warrants additional studies regarding potential for identification of resilient factors; and this may inform future selective prevention strategies, as well as identify a pathway between ACE and depression among cancer survivors. Abstract:Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are presumed to influence internalizing and externalizing behaviors that can significantly debilitate long-term biopsychological development in individuals. Psychological resilience has been shown to effectively mediate the relationship between ACEs and negative health outcomes since individuals with low levels of resilience may have difficulty with bouncing back from toxic exposure to ACEs. Thus, the present systematic review and meta-analysis was aimed toward synthesizing current knowledge of the relationship between ACEs and psychological resilience in youths. Methods: A combination of key words relevant to the present study was searched on the PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Cochrane, and Google Scholar databases. The results were restricted to English publications and human studies, with subjects ranging between the age of 0 to 35 years. Effect-size measures inclusive of pooled correlation coefficients for correlation analyses and pooled odds ratios for regression analyses, respectively, were calculated using random-effect models to determine the relationship between ACEs and psychological resilience. Results: The searches identified 85 potentially relevant studies. Among them, 76 were excluded due to limited access, irrelevant data, and the fact that the variables of interest were not explicitly measured or disclosed, leaving a final total of nine studies considered valid for the meta-analysis. Findings from correlational meta-analysis (n = 6) revealed a significantly negative association between ACEs and resilience (β = −0.120 [−0.196, −0.043]). The meta-analysis of the studies (n = 3) reporting dichotomous outcomes (ACE ≥ 1 vs. no ACE) indicated that subjects who experienced an ACE were 63% less likely to display high resilience, in comparison to subjects without such experiences. Conclusion: Our results support a negative association between ACEs and psychological resilience and highlight the multiple dimensions that constitute resilience in an ACE-exposure context. These findings may be particularly useful to policy makers and healthcare institutions in terms of helping them devise effective medical interventions and community outreach programs intended to develop resilience in youths, thus reducing health-risk behaviors and negative health outcomes.
Posttraumatic stress, depression and anxiety among adult long-term survivors of cancer in adolescence

Abstract:BACKGROUND: To determine the prevalence of posttraumatic stress, depression and anxiety in adults who have survived cancer (5 years) diagnosed in adolescence, as compared to healthy controls.PATIENTS AND METHODS: Survivors (n=820) of cancer during adolescence (age M=30.4+/-6.0 years; M=13.7+/-6.0 years since diagnosis) and 1027 matched controls without history of cancer (age M=31.5+/-6.9 years) completed standardised questionnaires measuring posttraumatic stress, depression and anxiety. Additionally, sub-groups of 202 survivors and 140 controls with elevated scores received structured interviews to ascertain DSM-IV-diagnoses.RESULTS: A total of 22.4% of the survivors reported clinically relevant symptoms of posttraumatic stress, anxiety and/or depression compared to 14.0% of the controls (odds ratios [ORs] 1.77; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.39-2.26). The odds of posttraumatic stress symptoms in male (OR 3.92, 95% CI 1.80-8.51) and female (OR 3.83, 95% CI 2.54-5.76) survivors were more than three times those in the controls. However, only female survivors reported symptoms of depression and anxiety significantly more often (respectively: OR 2.12, 95% CI 1.16-3.85; and OR 1.86, 95% CI 1.33-2.59) than the controls. A relevant subgroup of 24.3% of the survivors met DSM-IV criteria for at least one mental disorder compared to 15.3% of the controls.CONCLUSION: Survivors of cancer during adolescence show an elevated risk of presenting symptoms of posttraumatic stress, anxiety and/or depression during adulthood which is also reflected in a greater number of DSM-IV diagnoses when compared to controls. Comprehensive follow-up assessments should include the examination of possible psychological late effects of a cancer diagnosis in adolescence in order to identify survivors needing psychosocial interventions even years after the completion of successful medical treatment.

Abstract:Background Individuals with a history of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are at risk of subsequent cannabis use. However, at present no existing systematic review explores ACEs as they relate to cannabis use. Objective The aim of this systematic review paper is to examine how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) impact rates, patterns, and the nature of cannabis use in adulthood. Methods Guided by the PRISMA statement, this systematic review focuses on longitudinal studies that report cannabis use in adulthood. Databases searched include PubMed and Embase. Results Ultimately, 28 manuscripts were selected for inclusion, ranging in scope from smaller community-focused studies to nationally representative longitudinal surveys; 22 of 28 studies occurred in the United States, with sample size ranging from 303 to 15,960 participants. Instruments used to assess ACEs and cannabis use varied considerably across studies, leading to loss of consistency. Nevertheless, presence of ACEs–childhood sexual abuse in particular–was consistently associated with cannabis use later in life. Frequency and severity of ACEs was found to exert an additive cumulative effect on severity of cannabis use. Conclusions This systematic review lays the foundation of the current state of the science regarding ACEs and cannabis use, which can provide further insight into a better understanding of this relationship and provide potential intervention opportunities.

Abstract:ObjectivesTo explore current evidence of the physiological embedding of stress to discuss whether adverse childhood experiences (ACE) causing chronic or acute stress responses may alter fundamental biological functions.MethodsA non-systematic review of the literature was carried out using keyword searches in Pubmed and the web of science from May to October 2011. In reference to the literature identified, we examine the potential biological pathways potentially linking exposure to ACE and cancer development and progression in adulthood.ResultsThese mechanisms, in interaction with social position, and mediated by subsequent environmental exposures, may ultimately lead to the development of cancer. The experience of acute or chronic stressors during sensitive periods of childhood development which can induce several known biological responses, are likely to have an impact on subsequent biological and behavioural functions depending on the timing of initial exposures, and subsequently mediated by later exposures. For this reason, childhood exposure to adversity is a likely source of both acute and chronic stressors, and can be examined as an important initial exposure on a pathway towards adult ill health.ConclusionsSuch pathways justify a life course approach to understanding cancer aetiology, which may have its origins early in life.

Abstract:Abstract Background Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are negatively associated with a range of child health outcomes. In this study, we explored associations between five individual ACEs and child mental health diagnoses or symptoms. ACEs included living with someone who had an alcohol-related problem, common mental health disorder or serious mental illness, or experienced victimisation or death of a household member. Methods We analysed data from a population-level electronic cohort of children in Wales, UK, ( N = 191,035) between the years of 1998 and 2012. We used Cox regression with discrete time-varying exposure variables to model time to child mental health diagnosis during the first 15 years of life. Child mental health diagnoses include five categories: (i) externalising symptoms (anti-social behaviour), (ii) internalising symptoms (stress, anxiety, depression), (iii) developmental delay (e.g. learning disability), (iv) other (e.g. eating disorder, personality disorders), and (v) any mental health diagnosis, which was created by combining externalising symptoms, internalising symptoms and other. Our analyses were adjusted for social deprivation and perinatal risk factors. Results There were strong univariable associations between the five individual ACEs, sociodemographic and perinatal factors (e.g. gestational weight at birth) and an increased risk of child mental health diagnoses. After adjusting for sociodemographic and perinatal aspects, there was a remaining conditional increased risk of any child mental health diagnosis, associated with victimisation (conditional hazard ratio (cHR) 1.90, CI 95% 1.34–2.69), and living with an adult with a common mental health diagnosis (cHR 1.63, CI 95% 1.52–1.75). Coefficients of product terms between ACEs and deprivation were not statistically significant. Conclusion The increased risk of child mental health diagnosis associated with victimisation, or exposure to common mental health diagnoses, and alcohol problems in the household supports the need for policy measures and intervention strategies for children and their families.

Abstract:Background: Prior studies have reported a significant association between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and various health outcomes, including cancer; however, these have been limited to descriptive and cross-sectional studies. These studies reported that resilience, or the ability to adapt to challenging life experiences, is inversely associated with ACEs and cancer history. To date, there are no studies evaluating the interaction of ACEs and a cancer diagnosis on resilience among adult survivors. The primary aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence of ACEs among RURAL Alabama participants and to determine if the presence of ≥ 4 ACEs and a cancer history influences the odds of reporting self-perceived low and medium (vs. high) resilience compared to those with 0-3 ACEs and no cancer history. Methods: We utilized data from Alabama participants of the RURAL (Risk Underlying Rural Areas Longitudinal) Cohort Study, a prospective study designed to evaluate risk factors for heart and lung disorders in four rural southeastern states. Individuals aged 25-64 years and residents of two counties in Alabama were enrolled and completed a baseline and 3-month follow-up survey. The 30-item Early Trauma Inventory was used to assess the prevalence of ACEs, and the 10-item Connor Davidson-10 Resilience Scale was used to measure self-perceived resilience. Participants were categorized as having high resilience if their total resilience score was ≥75th percentile, medium resilience for scores ≥25th and <75th percentile, and low resilience for scores <25th percentile. Weighted multinomial logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association between number of ACEs (0-3 ACEs vs. ≥ 4 ACEs) and resilience categories and tested interactions between ACEs and cancer history; a p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Of the 556 participants, 38.9% reported having 0-3 ACEs, and 61.1% reported ≥ 4 ACEs. In adjusted models among participants with no cancer history, those experiencing ≥ 4 ACEs had 2.38 times the odds of reporting low (vs. high) resilience (95% CI: 1.93, 2.94) and 1.18 times the odds of reporting medium (vs. high) resilience (95% CI: 1.04, 1.35) compared to those experiencing 0-3 ACEs. Among participants with a cancer history, those experiencing ≥ 4 ACEs had 1.82 times odds of reporting low (vs. high) resilience (95% CI: 1.01, 3.28) and 0.76 times odds of reporting medium (vs. high) resilience (95% CI: 0.49, 1.18) compared to those experiencing 0-3 ACEs. Interactions between ACEs and cancer history were not statistically significant for low and medium (vs. high) resilience (p-values: 0.4 and 0.06, respectively). Conclusion: Those with a cancer history and ≥ 4 ACEs were more likely to report self-perceived low resilience. Significant interactions between ACEs and cancer history were not observed in predicting low and medium resilience (vs. high). To better understand the cumulative effects of ACEs, it is necessary to longitudinally evaluate individuals' ability to adapt, especially among cancer survivors.
