Abstract:Let $P^-(n)$ denote the smallest prime factor of a natural integer $n>1$. Furthermore let $\mu$ and $\omega$ denote respectively the Möbius function and the number of distinct prime factors function. We show that, given any set ${\scr P}$ of prime numbers with a natural density, we have $\sum_{P^-(n)\in \scr P}\mu(n)\omega(n)/n=0$ and provide a effective estimate for the rate of convergence. This extends a recent result of Alladi and Johnson, who considered the case when ${\scr P}$ is an arithmetic progression.

Abstract:We give a refinement of the stable Snaith splitting of the double loop space of a Moore space and use it to construct infinite $v_1$-periodic families of elements of order $p^{r+1}$ in the homotopy groups of mod $p^r$ Moore spaces. For odd primes $p$, our splitting implies that the homotopy groups of the mod $p^{r+1}$ Moore spectrum are summands of the unstable homotopy groups of each mod $p^r$ Moore space.

Abstract:For two given graphs G1 and G2, the Ramsey number R(G1,G2) is the smallest integer n such that for any graph G of order n, either G contains G1 or the complement of G contains G2. Let Cm denote a cycle of length m and Kn a complete graph of order n. It was conjectured that R(Cm,Kn)=(m-1)(n-1)+1 for m⩾n⩾3 and (m,n)≠(3,3). We show that R(C6,K7)=31 and R(C7,K7)=37, and the latter result confirms the conjecture in the case when m=n=7.

Abstract:Soit l un entier et E_{c,l} la famille de Kubert des courbes elliptiques definies sur Q munies d'un point rationnel A d'ordre l. On note F_{c,l} la courbe elliptique quotient de E_{c,l} par le groupe engendre' par A, et f_l l'isogenie de E_{c,l} sur F_{c,l}. Pour l = 3, 4, 5 et 6, nous construisons explicitement, pour des parametrisations convenables de c, des elements non-triviaux de F_{c,l}(Q) / (f_l(E_{c,l}(Q))), autrement dit, des points explicites de F_{c,l}(Q) qui ne sont l'image par f_l d'aucun element de E_{c,l}(Q). Ces points sont en general d'ordre infini. Nous donnons des applications de cette methode a la construction d'extensions cycliques de Q de degre' l, et retrouvons certains corps obtenus par Shanks et Gras. Dans un article ulterieur, nous etudierons les proprietes arithmetiques de certaines des extensions obtenues ici.

Abstract:Gauss proposed the problem of how to enumerate the number of solutions for placing $N$ queens on an $N\times N$ chess board, so no two queens attack each other. The N-queen problem is a classic problem in combinatorics. We describe a variety of Monte Carlo (MC) methods for counting the number of solutions. In particular, we propose a quantile re-ordering based on the Lorenz curve of a sum that is related to counting the number of solutions. We show his approach leads to an efficient polynomial-time solution. Other MC methods include vertical likelihood Monte Carlo, importance sampling, slice sampling, simulated annealing, energy-level sampling, and nested-sampling. Sampling binary matrices that identify the locations of the queens on the board can be done with a Swendsen-Wang style algorithm. Our Monte Carlo approach counts the number of solutions in polynomial time.

Abstract:Mobiles are a particular class of decorated plane trees which serve as codings for planar maps. Here we address the question of enumerating mobiles in their most general flavor, in correspondence with planar Eulerian (i.e., bicolored) maps. We show that the generating functions for such mobiles satisfy a number of recursive equations which lie in the field of integrable systems, leading us to explicit expressions for these generating functions as ratios of particular determinants. In particular we recover known results for mobiles associated with uncolored maps and prove some conjectured formulas for the generating functions of mobiles associated with $p$-constellations.

Counting stringy points on a family of character varieties

Abstract:We provided explicit formulas for the number of stringy points over finite fields of parabolic type A character varieties with generic semisimple monodromy. This leads to formulas for their stringy E-polynomials. In particular, they satisfy the Betti Topological Mirror Symmetry Conjecture of T. Hausel and M. Thaddeus, as well as a refinement regarding isotypic components. Our proof is based on a Frobenius' type formula for Clifford's type settings and an analysis of it in a specific set-up related to regular wreath products with cyclic groups.

Abstract:Let F be a real number field with r(1) real embeddings. In this paper, we prove that the sequenceK-2i(F){2}-> circle plus(p noncomplex) (H) over cap (0)(F-p;Q(2)/Z(2)(i))-> H-0(F;Q(2)/Z(2)(i)) -> 0is a complex, where (H) over cap (0)(F-p;Q(2)/Z(2)(i)) are the Tate cohomology groups. Moreover if i equivalent to 0, 1, or 2 (mod 4), then it is exact; if i equivalent to 3 (mod 4), then the homology group at the second term of this complex is isomorphic to circle plus(r1)Z/2Z.

Abstract:We compute Joyce's (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2111.04694" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2111.04694">arXiv:2111.04694</a>) enumerative invariants $[\mathcal{M}^{\mathrm{ss}}_{(r,d)}]_{\mathrm{inv}}$ for semistable rank $r$ degree $d$ coherent sheaves on a complex projective curve. These invariants are a generalization of the fundamental class of the moduli of semistable sheaves. We express the invariants as a regularized sum, which is a way to assign finite values to divergent series, and we obtain explicit expressions for the invariants. From these invariants, one can extract cohomology pairings on the moduli of semistable sheaves. When $r$ and $d$ are coprime, formulae for such pairings were found by Witten and proved by Jeffrey and Kirwan. Our results provide a new point of view on this classical problem, and can be seen as a generalization of this to the case when $r$ and $d$ are not coprime.

We approach the inverse problem of solving the equations $g(n) = 6$ and $g(n) = 7$ in $n$. The determination of $n$ for which $g(n) = k$ has been carried out by G. A. Miller for $1 \le k \le 5$.

Abstract:For a positive integer $N$ divisible by $4$, let $\mathcal{O}^1_N(\mathbb{Q})$ be the ring of weakly holomorphic modular functions for the congruence subgroup $\Gamma^1(N)$ with rational Fourier coefficients. We present explicit generators of the ring $\mathcal{O}^1_N(\mathbb{Q})$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, from which we are able to classify all Fricke families of such level $N$.

Abstract:The $\lambda$-quiddities of size $n$ are $n$-tuples of elements of a fixed set, solutions of a matrix equation appearing in the study of Coxeter friezes. These can be considered on various sets with very different structures from one set to another. The main objective of this text is to obtain explicit formulas giving the number of $\lambda$-quiddities of size $n$ over finite fields and over the rings $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$ with $N=4m$ and $m$ square free. We will also give some elements about the asymptotic behavior of the number of $\lambda$-quiddities verifying an irreducibility condition over $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$ when $N$ goes to the infinity.

Abstract:We apply Monte Carlo simulations to count the numbers of solutions of two well-known combinatorial problems: the N-queens problem and Latin-square problem. The original system is first converted to a general thermodynamic system, from which the number of solutions of the original system is obtained by using the method of computing the partition function. Collective moves are used to further accelerate sampling: swap moves are used in the N-queens problem and a cluster algorithm is developed for the Latin squares. The method can handle systems of 10(4) degrees of freedom with more than 10(10 000) solutions.

Abstract:We prove that the number of curves of a fixed genus g over finite fields is a polynomial function of the size of the field if and only if g is at most 8. Furthermore, we determine for each positive genus g the smallest n such that the moduli space of curves of genus g with n marked points does not have polynomial point count. A key ingredient in the proofs, which is also a new result of independent interest, is the computation of the thirteenth cohomology group of the moduli spaces of stable curves of genus g with n marked points, for all g and n.
