Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to provide an insight into the life, activities, and preserved archival documents concerning Józef Jakubowski (1899–1984), whose work in support of Polish emigrants residing in France during the Second World War deserves highest recognition and respect. Jakubowski was born in Warsaw, where he spent his childhood, completed primary and secondary education, and began his studies at the Warsaw University of Technology in 1917. He was was actively involved in the scouting movement. His participation in the Polish–Soviet War forced him to leave the university . It was only in 1924 that he completed his higher education at another university, the Higher School of Commerce. His professional life also started in Warsaw, where he worked for the Association of Polish Merchants until 1939. His life was interrupted by the Second World War, and he decided to emigrate first to Switzerland and then to France. At that time of his life, he became involved with the Polish Red Cross. He was primarily involved in developing forms of aid and organising support for Poles in France. Once the Polish Red Cross was banned from further activities, he worked in the Welfare Society for the Poles in France. He cooperated with the Polish Resistance Movement in France and with military authorities on the evacuation of the Polish armed forces to England, as well as with many institutions, including the French Red Cross, the Department of Social Welfare for Foreigners, the International Refugee Organisation, and the Association of Polish Veterans. The archival documents concerning Jakubowski, surviving at the Central Archives of Modern Records in Warsaw and at the Polish Library in Paris, make it possible to reconstruct not only the facts of his life but also the events related to the functioning of the institutions, organisations, and associations he worked for.

Abstract:The sudden and untimely death of Pawel Max Maksym will not diminish his contributions to the field of occultation astronomy, and to Polish society in general. Founder of the Pope Silvester II Observatory in Bukowiec, he was also writing a book to introduce children to astronomy. Graduating in Geography with an experimental thesis in Lunar Occultations at Lodz University, Pawel earned a diploma from the prestigious National Film School in Lodz. An expert observer, he mastered the technique of stellar occultations, fostering the scientific activity of the Observatory. A review of his publications in Minor Planet Circulars and on YouTube is presented here.

Abstract:Short information about the conference in 1960 in Jerusalem is presented together with an interesting photo where we can find several famous mathematicians participated in this conference. To recognize the people on the photo and collect their date of birth and death took me over five years. It was plan to have ready this note in 2010 on fifty years after conference. Unfortunately, this was not possible. Stil there are three persons which are not recognized. Maybe this publication will help to recognize them. In May 2012 I was trying to publish this article in Mathematical Intelligencer, but they would be willing to consider a longer, substantially revised, version. Also Notices AMS does not publish articles about conferences.

Abstract:Wiesław Krzemiński was born on 26 October 1948, in Oświęcim, south of Poland. In his youth he was an addicted book reader and developed his love for nature. After few years of playing in a big beat band he eventually focused on biology. Currently, he is a full time Professor and works in the Institute of Systematics and Evolution Polish Academy of Sciences in Kraków (ISEA PAS) and the Pedagogical University in Kraków.

Abstract:The Polish Bioinformatic Society (PTBI) Symposium convenes annually at leading Polish Universities, and in 2023, the Silesian University of Technology hosted participants from all over the world. The 15th PTBI Symposium, spanning a 3-day duration and divided into four scientific sessions, gathered around 100 participants and centered on research related to machine learning in biomedicine, RNA structure algorithms, next-generation sequencing methods, and microbiome analysis but was not limited to only those topics. The meeting also recognized outstanding research conducted by young scientists by awarding the best poster and best talk. Finally, the awards for the best PhD, MSc, and BSc thesis in bioinformatics defended in Poland were given. This report summarizes the key highlights and outcomes of the meeting.
Wide-field stellar photometry in Piwnice Observatory

Abstract:In this paper research projects based on the wide-field CCD photometry performed in Piwnice Observatory are discussed. The used telescopes, as well as dedicated software pipeline for data reduction are presented. The prospects for collaboration between Polish and Bulgarian institutes in the field of wide-field photometry are also discussed.

Abstract:Euclid is an ESA mission designed to constrain the properties of dark energy and gravity via weak gravitational lensing and galaxy clustering. It will carry out a wide area imaging and spectroscopy survey (EWS) in visible and near-infrared, covering roughly 15,000 square degrees of extragalactic sky on six years. The wide-field telescope and instruments are optimized for pristine PSF and reduced straylight, producing very crisp images. This paper presents the building of the Euclid reference survey: the sequence of pointings of EWS, Deep fields, Auxiliary fields for calibrations, and spacecraft movements followed by Euclid as it operates in a step-and-stare mode from its orbit around the Lagrange point L2. Each EWS pointing has four dithered frames; we simulate the dither pattern at pixel level to analyse the effective coverage. We use up-to-date models for the sky background to define the Euclid region-of-interest (RoI). The building of the reference survey is highly constrained from calibration cadences, spacecraft constraints and background levels; synergies with ground-based coverage are also considered. Via purposely-built software optimized to prioritize best sky areas, produce a compact coverage, and ensure thermal stability, we generate a schedule for the Auxiliary and Deep fields observations and schedule the RoI with EWS transit observations. The resulting reference survey RSD_2021A fulfills all constraints and is a good proxy for the final solution. Its wide survey covers 14,500 square degrees. The limiting AB magnitudes ($5\sigma$ point-like source) achieved in its footprint are estimated to be 26.2 (visible) and 24.5 (near-infrared); for spectroscopy, the H$_\alpha$ line flux limit is $2\times 10^{-16}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ at 1600 nm; and for diffuse emission the surface brightness limits are 29.8 (visible) and 28.4 (near-infrared) mag arcsec$^{-2}$.

Historical reconstruction and personal recollections in the Memoirs of Dilworth/Occhialini

Abstract:The folder containing the sheets of the Memoirs of Dilworth/Occhialini is kept in the Dilworth-Occhialini Archives at the BICF Library of the University of Milan. They cover the two English periods of Giuseppe Paolo Stanislao Occhialini (1907-1993): in Cambridge between 1931 and 1934 and in Bristol between 1945 and 1948. The Memoirs were written between an unspecified day in 1992 and April 16, 1993. They do not have the organic form of a historical reconstruction but are recollections and clarifications of Occhialini about some aspects of his activity, neglected by both historians and his colleagues, primarily Powell. Constance Dilworth (1924-2004) was the driving force. In Occhialini's considerations, references to specific dates or documents are often missing. In my contribution, after briefly describing the contents of the Memoirs, I will focus my attention on Occhialini's claim to have been instrumental in improving photographic plates provided by Ilford in the 1945, without Powell ever having acknowledged the importance of the suggestion. Abstract:It is our real pain to write this article, remembering years of friendship and scientific collaboration with Stefan Sokołowski, who passed away on the 24th of June 2024. He was a strong man in his faith and convictions, a kind and helpful friend, attentive and open-minded in discussions, creative, profound and sophisticated in understanding the flow of life and science. He left an unforgettable mark on our hearts and personal memories. His way of thinking left an imprint on students, young scientists and co-workers. We accompany all that with warm farewell applause as an appreciation of Stefan’s way and effects throughout his life.

Illuminating Roman Vishniac: A Career in Biological Photography and Cinematography

Abstract:Despite the fame of Roman Vishniac's photography of Jewish communities in pre-Holocaust Europe; what is relatively unknown today to the photography or science communities - despite the recognition it received at the time of its creation - is that Vishniac's major efforts in photography were neither documentary nor artistic. Rather, the vast majority of his lifetime of photographic work focused on the biological world. Reviewed here is the phenomenal scope and quantity of biological photography and cinematography produced by Roman Vishniac over a five-decade period. From zoo animals to the tiniest of microorganisms, from time-lapse studies of vascular physiology to widely distributed biology classroom films, from spreads in LIFE magazine to advertisements for an insect sting analgesic; Vishniac's ability to capture and create images - almost exclusively of living subjects - was sought after by scientific researchers, popular magazines, movie producers, news organizations and commercial entities. Vishniac's body of scientific photography, both still and ciné, often produced by him from initial concept through writing and shooting - in an age before the technological advances in imaging that we all now enjoy - and despite its later eclipse by his own earlier images, was regarded as the finest and most imaginative of its time.

Abstract:An attempt is made to evaluate progress of the Polish astrophysical research of stars and of the inter-stellar medium (ISM) on the basis of scientific paper citations in the ADS database. Rather modest citation levels were observed in the years before the mid-1950's. In the years 1958 - 1973, thanks to the partly opened foreign contacts and to strong support from astronomers of the older generation, work of a number of young, energetic enthusiasts reached the world science levels and formed a strong basis for the well recognized, international successes of the next generations.

Abstract:In our epoch, images are a powerful way to convey a message to a large audience. Through the use of amazing astronomical photographs, science can be communicated effectively at different levels, to a very diverse audience of all ages. In fact, astrophotography combines aesthetic appeal with the illustration of the science behind astronomical phenomena. This is the aim of the exhibit "A che Punto \`e la NOTTE - A scientific exhibition of astrophotography" organized by us in Italy, in October 2020, with the partnership of the cultural association PhysicalPub. Many different authors, both single individuals and professional or amateur observatories, were asked to send their best pictures. The 54 astronomical images chosen by a scientific committee, categorised in three different topics (night landscape, deep sky, instrumentation), were seen by more than 2000 visitors and 11 school groups (despite the difficult period due to the COVID pandemic). A free audio-guide, available on-line through a web-application developed on purpose, delivered scientific explanations of images for self-guided tours. Conferences and guided tours were also organized. The highlight of the exhibit were four mirrors from the MAGIC telescope and an ASTRI scale-model that allowed an in-depth description of how an Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) works, introducing the science of VHE cosmic radiation. We will summarize the main difficulties in organizing this event and the feedback we had from the visitors. Zoologist Volodymyr Karavaiev and the Karadag scientific station in Crimea (to the 160th anniversary of his birth)

Abstract:Some unknown pages in the life of Volodymyr Karavaiev the world-famous Ukrainian zoologist, myrmecologist, traveler, as well as a large landowner of the former Kyiv Governorate are considered. Particular attention is paid to his stay and research activities in the Crimea, near the Karadag mountain massif, at the Karadag scientific station. The station was founded in 1914 at the own cost of Terentiy Viazemsky, doctor of medicine, a privatdozent of the Moscow University, in order to develop science free from state supervision. In 1917, at the beginning of the revolutionary destruction, Volodymyr Karavaiev was in Crimea, and the went to the Karadag trying to find a safe place for scientific activity. He was fascinated by the untouched nature of this place and, with the help of the geologist Oleksandr Sludskyi, who was in charge of the station, decided to build his own house and set up an entomological laboratory at the station. However, subsequent political events made it impossible to implement the scientist’s ideas. The significance of the station in the scientist’s life is considered in the context of the complicated fate of the manuscript on ants of the Ponerinae subfamily the first one that the scientist almost managed to process after returning from a trip to the Dutch Indies in 1913 (the events of 1917 prevented it). The history of the manuscript is filled with losses, experiences, and hardships, but scientific activity in Kyiv and at the station continued and covers the period from 1913 to 1923. The acquaintance with academician Volodymyr Vernadsky is also mentioned. Also considered the trip of the scientist in the ‘academic’ carriage to Kharkiv, and from there to Crimea in November 1919 (together with Volodymyr Vernadsky, who continued traveling to Rostov.) It is emphasised that thanks to the shelter at the station, the scientist was able to increase his scientific knowledge; the tropical collections of ants brought to the station and therefore preserved, gave him the opportunity to successfully continue studying the ants of the world. Another significant reason for developing scientific studies was the station’s surroundings, which revealed the biodiversity of the myrmecofauna of Karadag. It is proposed to create a memorial library and a memorial collection of ants of the scientist as a national heritage.

Abstract:Introduction. Setting objectives. The urgency of the work is due to the fact that in connection with the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Lesya Ukrainka in Ukraine and around the world last year, increased attention was paid to studying the general contribution of the Kosach family to national science and social progress. A little-known page in the history of the Kosach family is the field of scientific activity of Lesya Ukrainka's older brother, Mykhailo Petrovich Kosach, who was a physicist, meteorologist, specialized in atmospheric optics and had significant achievements in this field. Purpose of the article. Therefore, the aim of the work was a detailed study of the life and scientific path of MP Kosach, his scientific achievements in the field of meteorology and atmospheric physics, his contribution to the formation of meteorological science in Ukraine. Results of the research: 1) Contribution of MP Kosach in the development of meteorological science in Ukraine can be divided into three main components: a) teaching activities in the field: work at the departments of Dorpat (Tartu), Kharkiv University, teaching at St. George's Women's Gymnasium, Veterinary Institute, School of Technical Society (Kharkov). Teaching courses in physics, mathematics, general meteorology, electrostatics, electromagnetism, mechanical thermal theory; b) research, works, inventions: published about 20 works in the field of atmospheric optics, meteorology, atmospheric physics, translated into Russian fundamental European works on meteorology, developed prototypes of automated instruments for measuring wind, X-ray machine. Defense of master's and dissertation works on atmospheric optics; c) organization of a stationary meteorological network: MP Kosach organized the work of an exemplary meteorological station at the All-Russian Exhibition (1896), and later improved the work of the first university meteorological station in the Kharkiv region. The project of the meteorological network for Slobozhanshchyna developed by him was implemented after the scientist's death. 2) Research performed by MP Kosach addressed such areas in meteorology as atmospheric optics, atmospheric physics, atmospheric electricity, aerodynamics, actinometry, design and improvement of meteorological instruments (electric tomograph, continuous integrator of wind power and speed). The main scientific achievements of MP Kosach in the field of meteorological science is associated with the period of his work at Kharkiv University as a private associate professor of physics and meteorology (1901 - 1903). 3) According to the analysis of scientific heritage MP Kosach has developed an interactive map and a number (https://bit.ly/2Ttw9FI) of chronological tables that can be used in the educational process to promote information about the scientist. The scientific novelty of this study is a detailed analysis of the contribution of MP Kosach in the development of meteorology in Ukraine and the development of author's information materials (interactive map, tables), which will promote information about the outstanding Ukrainian scientist. Practical significance: thus, the scientific heritage of MP Kosach, as one of the first Ukrainian meteorologists, deserves further detailed study and popularization, because it was undeservedly forgotten in the past, and is still little known to the general public and even specialists in the field of geographical sciences. The interactive map and chronological tables developed by the authors will allow to carry out such popularization among all those interested in the study of scientific development of natural branches in Ukraine. Abstract:Joseph Polchinski (1954-2018), one of the the leading theoretical physicists of the past 50 years, was an exceptionally broad and deep thinker. He made fundamental contributions to quantum field theory, advancing the role of the renormalization group, and to cosmology, addressing the cosmological constant problem. Polchinski's work on D-branes revolutionized string theory and led to the discovery of a nonperturbative quantum theory of gravity. His recent, incisive reformulation of the black hole information paradox presents us with a profound challenge. Joe was deeply devoted to his family, a beloved colleague and advisor, an excellent writer, and an accomplished athlete.

Abstract:The origins of the series of European Cosmic-Ray Symposia are briefly described. The first meeting in the series, on Hadronic Interactions and Extensive Air Showers, held in Lodz, Poland in 1968, was attended by the author: some memories are recounted.
