Abstract:Theory development , theory use , and research programs are foundational to advancing academic disciplines. All through the evolution of the marketing discipline, there have been persistent scholarly efforts to develop and use theory for the explanation and prediction of marketing phenomena. Specific to theory development, as it is impossible to list all of the significant scholarly efforts, I provide a few examples. In the very first volume of the Journal of Marketing , Alderson ( Citation 1937 ) articulated 13 foundational premises that constituted a starting point for developing a distinctive marketing theory of competition. About a decade later, Alderson and Cox ( Citation 1948 ) identified the growing need for marketing theory development and sources for developing a theory of marketing: economics, anthropology, sociology, social psychology, ecology, and marketing research. Alderson ( Citation 1957 , Citation 1965 ) went on to develop his functionalist theory of market processes that is arguably foundational to market segmentation strategy and other marketing strategies for differential advantages. Subsequently, Bartels ( Citation 1968 ) and Howard and Sheth ( Citation 1969 ) made two notable contributions to marketing theory development respectively: the general theory of marketing and the theory of buyer behaviour. Next, on the foundations of the works of Wroe Alderson, Bob Bartels, and other marketing theorists, and philosophy of science, Hunt ( Citation 1971 , Citation 1973 , Citation 1976 , Citation 1978 ) began his research program on marketing theory.
