Abstract:Abstract To test the functional implications of gaze signals that we previously reported in the dorsal premotor cortex (PMd), we trained two rhesus monkeys to point to visual targets presented on a touch screen while controlling their gaze orientation. Each monkey had to perform four different tasks. To initiate a trial, the monkey had to put his hand on a starting position at the center of the touch screen and fixate a fixation point. In one task, the animal had to make a reaching movement to a peripheral target randomly presented at one of eight possible locations on a circle while maintaining fixation at the center of this virtual circle (central fixation + reaching). In the second task, the monkey maintained fixation at the location of the upcoming peripheral target and, later, reached to that location. After a delay, the target was turned on and the monkey made a reaching arm movement (target fixation + reaching). In the third task, the monkey made a saccade to the target without any arm movement (saccade). Finally, in the fourth task, the monkey first made a saccade to the target, then reached to it after a delay (saccade + reaching). This design allowed us to examine the contribution of the oculomotor context to arm-related neuronal activity in PMd. We analyzed the effects of the task type on neuronal activity and found that many cells showed a task effect during the signal (26/60; 43%), set (16/49; 33%) and/or movement (15/54; 28%) epochs, depending on the oculomotor history. These findings, together with previously published data, suggest that PMd codes limb-movement direction in a gaze-dependent manner and may, thus, play an important role in the brain mechanisms of eye-hand coordination during visually guided reaching.

Influence of eye position on activity in monkey superior colliculus

Abstract:1. Most recording studies on the role of the monkey superior colliculus (SC) in eye movement generation have so far indicated that the code of the recruited population of cells is a fixed vector command representing the desired saccadic eye displacement vector, irrespective of the position of the eyes in the orbit. Experimental evidence from microstimulation, lesions, and neuroanatomy, however, suggests that the SC may have access to an eye position signal. 2. In this paper we have tested the hypothesis that SC activity is influenced by eye position, by recording from presaccadic burst neurons while monkeys made rapid eye movements in the light covering a large part of the oculomotor range. 3. In four alert rhesus monkeys, we obtained sufficient data from 57 SC single units. The activity of a substantial part of these cells (30/57) appeared to be significantly influenced by eye position. Although the tuning properties of these cells for saccade amplitude and direction remained invariant for changes in eye position, the peak firing rate of these units was systematically influenced by the position of the eyes in the head. 4. We have characterized this eye position dependence of a neuron's activity by a qualitative, model-independent, as well as by a quantitative model description (gain field), which takes into account both the tuning properties of the cell for eye displacement vectors and the dependence of eye position. 5. Although a majority of gain fields had their eye position sensitivity vector roughly aligned with the optimal saccade vector direction (colinear gain field, 17/30), a substantial part of the gain fields had their eye position sensitivity vectors in quite different directions, approximately homogeneously distributed with respect to the cell's ON direction. 6. We conclude that the SC has access to a signal related to the position of the eyes in the orbit. Several hypotheses on the possible functional role of this signal, in relation to the neural code of the motor map, are discussed.

Brain-wide arousal signals are segregated from movement planning in the superior colliculus

Abstract:The superior colliculus (SC) is traditionally considered a brain region that functions as an interface between processing visual inputs and generating eye movement outputs. Although its role as a primary reflex center is thought to be conserved across vertebrate species, evidence suggests that the SC has evolved to support higher-order cognitive functions including spatial attention. When it comes to oculomotor areas such as the SC, it is critical that high precision fixation and eye movements are maintained even in the presence of signals related to ongoing changes in cognition and brain state, both of which have the potential to interfere with eye position encoding and movement generation. In this study, we recorded spiking responses of neuronal populations in the SC while monkeys performed a memory-guided saccade task and found that the activity of some of the neurons fluctuated over tens of minutes. By leveraging the statistical power afforded by high-dimensional neuronal recordings, we were able to identify a low-dimensional pattern of activity that was correlated with the subjects’ arousal levels. Importantly, we found that the spiking responses of deep-layer SC neurons were less correlated with this brain-wide arousal signal, and that neural activity associated with changes in pupil size and saccade tuning did not overlap in population activity space with movement initiation signals. Taken together, these findings provide a framework for understanding how signals related to cognition and arousal can be embedded in the population activity of oculomotor structures without compromising the fidelity of the motor output.

Pathways from the superior colliculus and the nucleus of the optic tract to the posterior parietal cortex in macaque monkeys: Functional frameworks for representation updating and online movement guidance

Abstract:With the use of rabies retrograde transneuronal tracing, we demonstrate in non‐human primates that cortical areas MSTl, LIPv and rostral MIP receive major ascending disynaptic pathways from the nucleus of the optic tract (NOT) and visual and motor layers of the superior colliculus (SC). Pathways from the NOT and SC visual layers serve to process the sensory consequences of slow eye movements for which the NOT is the key sensorimotor interface and are potential correlates for fast detection of motion, perceptual saccadic suppression and visual spatial attention. MSTl is the target of efference copy pathways from saccade‐ and head‐related compartments of SC upper motor layers, while LIPv and rostral MIP receive efference copy pathways from all SC motor layers and the underlying reticular formation, providing an online estimate of eye, head and arm movements. The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) integrates multisensory and motor‐related information for generating and updating body representations and movement plans. We used retrograde transneuronal transfer of rabies virus combined with a conventional tracer in macaque monkeys to identify direct and disynaptic pathways to the arm‐related rostral medial intraparietal area (MIP), the ventral lateral intraparietal area (LIPv), belonging to the parietal eye field, and the pursuit‐related lateral subdivision of the medial superior temporal area (MSTl). We found that these areas receive major disynaptic pathways via the thalamus from the nucleus of the optic tract (NOT) and the superior colliculus (SC), mainly ipsilaterally. NOT pathways, targeting MSTl most prominently, serve to process the sensory consequences of slow eye movements for which the NOT is the key sensorimotor interface. They potentially contribute to the directional asymmetry of the pursuit and optokinetic systems. MSTl and LIPv receive feedforward inputs from SC visual layers, which are potential correlates for fast detection of motion, perceptual saccadic suppression and visual spatial attention. MSTl is the target of efference copy pathways from saccade‐ and head‐related compartments of SC motor layers and head‐related reticulospinal neurons. They are potential sources of extraretinal signals related to eye and head movement in MSTl visual‐tracking neurons. LIPv and rostral MIP receive efference copy pathways from all SC motor layers, providing online estimates of eye, head and arm movements. Our findings have important implications for understanding the role of the PPC in representation updating, internal models for online movement guidance, eye‐hand coordination and optic ataxia.

Abstract:Although many details remain unknown, several positive statements can be made about the laminar distribution of primate frontal eye field (FEF) neurons with different physiological properties. Most certainly, pyramidal neurons in the deep layer of FEF that project to the brainstem carry movement and fixation signals but clear evidence also support that at least some deep-layer pyramidal neurons projecting to the superior colliculus carry visual responses. Thus, deep-layer neurons in FEF are functionally heterogeneous. Despite the useful functional distinctions between neuronal responses in vivo, the underlying existence of distinct cell types remain uncertain, mostly due to methodological limitations of extracellular recordings in awake behaving primates. To substantiate the functionally defined cell types encountered in the deep layer of FEF, we measured the biophysical properties of pyramidal neurons recorded intracellularly in brain slices issued from macaque monkey biopsies. Here, we found that biophysical properties recorded in vitro permit us to distinguish two main subtypes of regular-spiking neurons, with, respectively, low-resistance and low excitability vs. high-resistance and strong excitability. These results provide useful constraints for cognitive models of visual attention and saccade production by indicating that at least two distinct populations of deep-layer neurons exist.

In the first of two papers ( Takahashi and Veale, 2023 ), we described the properties of gaze behavior of several species under both laboratory and natural conditions, as well as the current understanding of the brainstem and spinal cord circuits implementing gaze control in primate. In this paper, we review the parallel pathways by which sensory and task information reach SC and how these sensory and task signals interact within SC's multilayered structure. This includes both bottom-up (world statistics) signals mediated by sensory cortex, association cortex, and subcortical structures, as well as top-down (goal and task) influences which arrive via either direct excitatory pathways from cerebral cortex, or via indirect basal ganglia relays resulting in inhibition or dis-inhibition as appropriate for alternative behaviors. Models of attention such as saliency maps serve as convenient frameworks to organize our understanding of both the separate computations of each neural pathway, as well as the interaction between the multiple parallel pathways influencing gaze. While the spatial interactions between gaze's neural pathways are relatively well understood, the temporal interactions between and within Preprint submitted to Neuroscience February 15, 2024 pathways will be an important area of future study, requiring both improved technical methods for measurement and improvement of our understanding of how temporal dynamics results in the observed spatiotemporal allocation of gaze.

Abstract:Brain control of prehension is thought to rely on two specific brain circuits. The dorsomedial pathway is involved in the reach movements meanwhile the dorsolateral one is dealing with grasping components. However, recent studies have demonstrated that the dorsomedial pathway also takes part in grasp movement. Raos et al. found that some neurons in dorsal premotor (PMd) show high selectivity for specific gestures during movement planning period. But it is still unclear whether the distinct discharging of these neurons during movement plans is related to external visual stimuli induced by the shape and size of the object or internal movement selection for preshaping hand. In this study, we aimed to directly compare neuronal activity of PMd during the planning of internally and externally driven grasp movements. We trained a monkey to grasp the same object by freely choosing one of two gesture type (Power and Hook). Neural activities from its PMd were collected through a microelectrode array when the monkey was performing the task. With single neural activity (SUA) analysis, we found that 18% of neurons in PMd showed significant selectivity for hand shapes during planning period. Meanwhile, the gesture classification based on neuronal population activity showed that the decoding performance of the neurons with achieved 93.5% in planning period. Our results confirmed that PMd neurons participate the preparation of grasp movements.
Mapping eye, arm, and reward information in frontal motor cortices using electrocorticography in non-human primates

Abstract:Goal-directed reaches give rise to dynamic neural activity across the brain as we move our eyes and arms, and process outcomes. High spatiotemporal resolution mapping of multiple cortical areas will improve our understanding of how these neural computations are spatially and temporally distributed across the brain. In this study, we used micro-electrocorticography (μECoG) recordings in two male monkeys performing visually guided reaches to map information related to eye movements, arm movements, and receiving rewards over a 1.37 cm2 area of frontal motor cortices (primary motor cortex, premotor cortex, frontal eye field, and dorsolateral pre-frontal cortex). Time-frequency and decoding analyses revealed that eye and arm movement information shifts across brain regions during a reach, likely reflecting shifts from planning to execution. We then used phase-based analyses to reveal potential overlaps of eye and arm information. We found that arm movement decoding performance was impacted by task-irrelevant eye movements, consistent with the presence of intermixed eye and arm information across much of motor cortices. Phase-based analyses also identified reward-related activity primarily around the principal sulcus in the pre-frontal cortex as well as near the arcuate sulcus in the premotor cortex. Our results demonstrate μECoG's strengths for functional mapping and provide further detail on the spatial distribution of eye, arm, and reward information processing distributed across frontal cortices during reaching. These insights advance our understanding of the overlapping neural computations underlying coordinated movements and reveal opportunities to leverage these signals to enhance future brain-computer interfaces.
Neural Synergies for Controlling Reach and Grasp Movement in Macaques.

Abstract:It has been suggested that the brain adopts a simplified strategy to coordinate a large number of degrees of freedom in motor control. Synergies have been proposed as a strategy to produce movements by recruitment of a small number of fixed modular patterns. However, there is no direct support for a synergistic organization of the brain itself. In this study, we recorded neural activities from the dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) of monkeys trained to reach and grasp differently shaped objects (grasping task) or the same object in different positions (reaching task). Non-negative matrix factorization (NNMF) was applied to the neural data to extract neural synergies, whose functional roles were verified in several ways. We found that motor cortex used similar neural synergies for grasping different objects; combining only a few of the synergies accounted for most of the variance in the original data. When used for single-trial task decoding, the synergy coefficients performed as well and robustly as the original data in both tasks. The synergy amplitudes for each unit were significantly correlated with the corresponding neuron's firing rate. In addition, we also observed synergies shared between tasks and task-specific synergies, as shown before for muscle synergies. Altogether, we demonstrated that neural synergies are effective in describing neural population activity during reach to grasp movements and provide a new tool for interpreting neural data for movement control.
Object-centered Encoding by Face-Selective Neurons in the Cortex in the Superior Temporal Sulcus of the Monkey.

Abstract:Neurophysiological studies have shown that some neurons in the cortex in the superior temporal sulcus and in the inferior temporal cortex respond to faces. To determine if some face responsive neurons encode stimuli in an object-centered coordinate system rather than a viewer-centered coordinate system, a large number of neurons were tested for sensitivity to head movement in 3 macaque monkeys. Ten neurons responded only when a head undergoing rotatory movements was shown. All of these responded to a particular movement independently of the orientation of the moving head in relation to the viewer, maintaining specificity even when the moving head was inverted or shown from the back, thereby reversing viewer-centered movement vectors. This was taken as evidence that the movement was encoded in object-centered coordinates. In tests of whether there are neurons in this area which respond differently to the faces of different individuals relatively independently of viewing angle, it was found that a further 18 neurons responded more to one static face than another across different views. However, for 16 of these 18 cells there was still some modulation of the neuronal response with viewing angle. These 16 neurons thus did not respond perfectly in relation to the object shown independently of viewing angle, and may represent an intermediate stage between a viewer-centered and an object-centered representation. In the same area as these neurons, other cells were found which responded on the basis of viewer-centered coordinates. These neurophysiological findings provide evidence that some neurons in the inferior temporal visual cortex respond to faces (or heads) on the basis of object-centered coordinates, and that others have responses which are intermediate between object-centered and viewer-centered representations. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that object-centered representations are built in the inferior temporal visual cortex.

Abstract:There is a serious discrepancy between the distance to the LMC derived from the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation and that obtained by using the Galactic calibration for the luminosity of RR Lyrae stars. It is suggested that this problem might be due to the fact that second parameter effects make it inappropriate to apply Galactic calibrations to RR Lyrae variables in the Magellanic Clouds, i.e., MV (RR) could depend on both [Fe/H] and on one or more other parameters.
Midbrain activity supports high-level visual properties in primate temporal cortex

Abstract:Abstract The evolution of the primate brain is marked by a dramatic increase in the number of neocortical areas that process visual information 1 . This cortical expansion supports two hallmarks of high-level primate vision – the ability to selectively attend to particular visual features 2 and the ability to recognize a seemingly limitless number of complex visual objects 3 . Given their prominent roles in high-level vision for primates, it is commonly assumed that these cortical processes supersede the earlier versions of these functions accomplished by the evolutionarily older brain structures that lie beneath the cortex. Contrary to this view, here we show that the superior colliculus (SC), a midbrain structure conserved across all vertebrates 4 , is necessary for the normal expression of attention-related modulation and object selectivity in a newly identified region of macaque temporal cortex. Using a combination of psychophysics, causal perturbations and fMRI, we identified a localized region in the temporal cortex that is functionally dependent on the SC. Targeted electrophysiological recordings in this cortical region revealed neurons with strong attention-related modulation that was markedly reduced during attention deficits caused by SC inactivation. Many of these neurons also exhibited selectivity for particular visual objects, and this selectivity was also reduced during SC inactivation. Thus, the SC exerts a causal influence on high-level visual processing in cortex at a surprisingly late stage where attention and object selectivity converge, perhaps determined by the elemental forms of perceptual processing the SC has supported since before there was a neocortex.
Evidence for Gaze Feedback to the Cat Superior Colliculus: Discharges Reflect Gaze Trajectory Perturbations

Abstract:Rapid coordinated eye-head movements, called saccadic gaze shifts, displace the line of sight from one location to another. A critical structure in the gaze control circuitry is the superior colliculus (SC) of the midbrain, which drives gaze saccades by relaying cortical commands to brainstem eye and head motor circuits. We proposed that the SC lies within a gaze feedback loop and generates an error signal specifying gaze position error (GPE), the distance between target and current gaze positions. We investigated this feedback hypothesis in cats by briefly stopping head motion during large ( approximately 50 degrees ) gaze saccades made in the dark. This maneuver interrupted intended gaze saccades and briefly immobilized gaze (a plateau). After brake release, a corrective gaze saccade brought the gaze on goal. In the caudal SC, the firing frequency of a cell gradually increased to a maximum that just preceded the optimal gaze saccade encoded by the position of the cell and then declined back to zero near gaze saccade end. In brake trials, the activity level just preceding a brake-induced plateau continued steadily during the plateau and waned to zero only near the end of the corrective saccade. The duration of neural activity was stretched to reflect the increased time to target acquisition, and firing frequency during a plateau was proportional to the GPE of the plateau. In comparison, in the rostral SC, the duration of saccade-related pauses in fixation cell activity increased as plateau duration increased. The data show that the cat's SC lies in a gaze feedback loop and that it encodes GPE.

Inferior frontal eye field projections to the pursuit-related dorsolateral pontine nucleus and middle temporal area (MT) in the monkey

Abstract:Abstract Inferior frontal eye field (FEF) projections to the dorsolateral pontine nucleus (DLPN), and corticocortical connections with the superior temporal sulcal (STS) cortex, were studied in five macaque monkeys which had received horseradish peroxidase (HRP) gel implants into the inferior prearcuate cortex (including area 45 of Walker, 1940). These connections were contrasted with those from the dorsal FEF (area 8a) in another macaque monkey. Findings of heavy inferior FEF projections to the ipsilateral DLPN (light to the contralateral DLPN) and reciprocal connections with the deep caudal bank and fundus of the superior temporal sulcus (STS), presumed to be the middle temporal (MT) visual area (Maunsell & Van Essen, 1983 a ), appeared to go hand in hand with more pronounced projections to the stratum superficialis of the superior colliculus (SC). In contrast, the HRP gel implant in the dorsal prearcuate cortex (area 8a of Walker, 1940) resulted in only very light projections to the ipsilateral DLPN, more pronounced projections to the dorsomedial pontine nucleus (DMPN), almost no projection to the stratum superficialis (SS), and more pronounced reciprocal connections with the upper bank of the STS, presumed to be the medial superior temporal (MST) area (Maunsell & Van Essen, 1983 a ). Both the inferior and dorsal FEF also had extensive reciprocal connections with the ventral intraparietal area (VIP; Maunsell & Van Essen, 1983 a ) in the caudal bank of the intraparietal sulcus. The correlated projections of the inferior FEF to the DLPN, MT area, and SS may explain its reported role in smooth pursuit (Lynch, 1987), in addition to its well-established role in the production of voluntary purposeful saccadic eye movements (Bruce et al., 1985).

The superior colliculus (SC) has been increasingly implicated in the rapid processing of evolutionarily relevant stimuli like faces, but the behavioural relevance of such processing is unclear. The SC has also been implicated in the generation of express visuomotor responses (EVR), which are very short‐latency (~80 ms) bursts of muscle activity time‐locked to visual target presentation. These observations led us to investigate the influence of faces on EVRs. We recorded upper limb muscle activity from healthy participants as they reached toward targets in the presence of a distractor. In some experiments, faces were used as stimuli. Across blocks of trials, we varied the instruction as to which stimulus served as the target or distractor. Doing so allowed us to assess the impact of instruction on muscle recruitment given identical visual stimuli. We found that responses were uniquely modulated in tasks involving high‐contrast faces, promoting reaches toward or away from a face depending on instruction. Follow‐up experiments confirmed that the phenomenon required highly salient repeated faces and was not observed to non‐facial stimuli nor to faces expressing different affects. This study extends the hypothesis that the SC mediates the EVR by demonstrating that faces impact muscle recruitment at short latencies that precede cortical activity for face perception. Our results constitute direct evidence for the behavioural relevance of face detection in the brainstem, and also implicate a role for top‐down cortical pre‐setting of the EVR depending on task context.

Abstract:This paper presents a technique for the optimization of bound queries on disjunctive deductive databases. The optimization is based on the rewriting of the source program into an equivalent program which can be evaluated more efficiently. The proposed optimization reduces the amount of data needed to answer the query and, consequently, 1) reduces the complexity of computing a single model and, more importantly, 2) greatly reduces the number of models to be considered. Although, in this paper, we consider the application of the magic-set method, other rewriting techniques defined for special classes of queries can also be applied. To show the relevance of our technique, we have implemented a prototype of an optimizer. Several experiments have confirmed the value of the technique.
Hand Position Fields of Neurons in the Premotor Cortex of Macaques during Natural Reaching

Abstract:Planning and execution for goal-directed movements requires the integration of the current position of body or body parts with various kinematic parameters of the movement itself. In the hippocampus, the field-based representation of spatial information plays an essential role in this process during navigation. However, if a similar, field-based encoding framework is also utilized by the motor areas during hand reaching remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the hand position tuning in the dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) neurons (n = 601) when four monkeys performing a naturalistic reach-and-grasp task. We show that 132/601 (22%) of PMd neurons increased their firing rates when the monkey's hand occupied specific positions in the space, forming the "position fields" in their spatial firing maps that can be well described by 2D Gaussian functions/kernels. We further analyzed how the field-tuning of hand position is co-represented with other task-related parameters including the hand moving direction, speed, and reward location in the same population of PMd neurons, revealing a mixed-selective framework also similar to that discovered in the hippocampus. These position-tuned cells demonstrated high efficiency in encoding hand position, with ~10% of overall recorded neurons contributing >80% of accuracy in decoding instantaneous hand moving trajectories. These results suggest that a field-based encoding framework of position may be a common component to representing spatial information and integrating it with kinematic parameters for guiding goal-directed movements of the body or body parts.

Differential modulation of local field potentials in the primary and premotor cortices during ipsilateral and contralateral reach to grasp in macaque monkeys

Abstract:Hand movements are associated with modulations of neuronal activity across several interconnected cortical areas, including the primary motor cortex (M1), and the dorsal and ventral premotor cortices (PMd and PMv). Local field potentials (LFPs) provide a link between neuronal discharges and synaptic inputs. Our current understanding of how LFPs vary in M1, PMd, and PMv during contralateral and ipsilateral movements is incomplete. To help reveal unique features in the pattern of modulations, we simultaneously recorded LFPs in these areas in two macaque monkeys performing reach and grasp movements with either the right or left hand. The greatest effector-dependent differences were seen in M1, at low (≤ 13 Hz) and gamma frequencies. In premotor areas, differences related to hand use were only present in low frequencies. PMv exhibited the greatest increase in low frequencies during instruction cues and the smallest effector-dependent modulation during movement execution. In PMd, delta oscillations were greater during contralateral reach and grasp, and beta activity increased during contralateral grasp. In contrast, beta oscillations decreased in M1 and PMv. These results suggest that while M1 primarily exhibits effector-specific LFP activity, premotor areas compute more effector-independent aspects of the task requirements, particularly during movement preparation for PMv and production for PMd. The generation of precise hand movements likely relies on the combination of complementary information contained in the unique pattern of neural modulations contained in each cortical area. Accordingly, integrating LFPs from premotor areas and M1 could enhance the performance and robustness of brain-machine interfaces. Significance Statement We compared local field potentials (LFPs) from the primary motor cortex (M1), the dorsal and ventral premotor cortices (PMd and PMv) while monkeys performed reach and grasp with the contralateral or ipsilateral hand. In general, hand-related differences were greater in M1 than in premotor areas. During both contralateral and ipsilateral trials, LFPs were more similar when comparing the two premotor areas than comparing M1 to PMd or PMv. However, the pattern of modulations in each area had unique features. The combination of these signals is likely essential to support the flexibility and complexity of unilateral hand movements. Our results help to understand the neural substrate that allows cortical areas to concurrently contribute to different aspects of movement planning and production.

Abstract:Abstract The superior colliculus is a midbrain structure that plays important roles in visually guided behaviors in mammals. Neurons in the superior colliculus receive inputs from retinal ganglion cells but how these inputs are integrated in vivo is unknown. Here, we discovered that high-density electrodes simultaneously capture the activity of retinal axons and their postsynaptic target neurons in the superior colliculus, in vivo. We show that retinal ganglion cell axons in the mouse provide a single cell precise representation of the retina as input to superior colliculus. This isomorphic mapping builds the scaffold for precise retinotopic wiring and functionally specific connection strength. Our methods are broadly applicable, which we demonstrate by recording retinal inputs in the optic tectum in zebra finches. We find common wiring rules in mice and zebra finches that provide a precise representation of the visual world encoded in retinal ganglion cells connections to neurons in retinorecipient areas.

Abstract:The superior colliculus (SC), one of the most well-characterized midbrain sensorimotor structures where visual, auditory, and somatosensory information are integrated to initiate motor commands, is highly conserved across vertebrate evolution. Moreover, cell-type-specific SC neurons integrate afferent signals within local networks to generate defined output related to innate and cognitive behaviors. This review focuses on the recent progress in understanding of phenotypic diversity amongst SC neurons and their intrinsic circuits and long-projection targets. We further describe relevant neural circuits and specific cell types in relation to behavioral outputs and cognitive functions. The systematic delineation of SC organization, cell types, and neural connections is further put into context across species as these depend upon laminar architecture. Moreover, we focus on SC neural circuitry involving saccadic eye movement, and cognitive and innate behaviors. Overall, the review provides insight into SC functioning and represents a basis for further understanding of the pathology associated with SC dysfunction.
