Abstract:The translation of ancient Chinese Poetry into English is considered to be one of the most challenging tasks not only because of the different features between the two languages, especially as they belong to different linguistic families, but also the unique features of the ancient Chinese poetry itself.. This paper, by applying poetry dialogue analysis based on dialogism, explores the operation of its elements such as context, subject, sense, image, the reader and text form, and tries to seek out the mechanism for understanding the source text and reproducing what the source contains in the target language, thus shedding light on poetry translation studies.

Abstract:Translating poetry is a very complex process. The paradoxical nature of untranslatability and translatability of poetry has been noticed by Hai An (The translation of poetry by the translator-cum-poet. Chinese Translator Journals 2005; 6:27-30), citing two famous scholars who are holding totally different opinions toward poetry translation. Robert Frost purports that 'poetry is what gets lost in translation', and Susan Bassnet advocates 'poetry is what we gain in translation'. However, the common ground between these two drastic opinions is that poetry translation is no more a repetition of the original works than a reproduction. There are both similarities and discrepancies between the translated works and the original pieces, or in another word: 'harmony in diversity'. This study aims to testify the above-mentioned proposal in a clear and objective manner, by comparing the original poetry texts (twenty randomly selected poems from Shakespearean sonnets) with their translated versions (the corresponding Chinese-translated versions by four different translators) from the perspective of vocabulary, word frequency distribution and part-of-speech (POS) frequency distribution. The results have corroborated the previous proposal: first, there is no significant difference in terms of vocabulary size and the text management styles between the translated poems and the original ones. Second, there is a significant difference in the word frequency distribution and POS frequency distribution between translated poems and the original ones. Third, there are also differences in the POS frequency distribution in poems translated by different authors. Furthermore, the translation style could distinguish professional translators from professional poets.

Abstract:The relationship between poetry and painting has always been a hot trend in the history of Chinese and Western aesthetics. The representative theoretical system of poetry and painting in the West is Lessing’s “poetry-painting heterogeneity”, while China’s cognition focuses on “poetry-painting uniformity” and “poetry-painting homogeneity”. Poetry is the art of time and painting is the art of space. Because of their differences in media and other factors, they share some similarities in terms of their specialties. At the same time, due to the various aesthetic concepts between China and the West, their theories of poetry and painting are also different. In addition to exploring the boundary between poetry and painting from the perspective of media, this paper probes into the Chinese and Western poetry-painting relationship based on aesthetic concepts, explores the cultural characteristics of our nation, and absorbs foreign cultures with an inclusive attitude, thus providing a humble opinion for the study of art history.

Jiangxi has been full of natural resources and outstanding people since ancient times, especially in the Song dynasty, when people of talent came forth in large numbers and created brilliant heritage of classic literary works for their offspring. Therefore, study on the translation of classics by JX native literati of Song Dynasty has very important academic value, application value and popularization meaning. Abstract:Shakespeare was a famous playwright and poet during the English Renaissance. His sonnets had a profound impact on world poetry. In the sonnets, he uses different images to express his inner emotions, and China also has extraordinary achievements in the sonnets. The ancient Chinese poets were good at using different intentions to express their feelings. Therefore, this paper focuses on the differences between Shakespeares sonnets and the imagery in Chinese poetry. The choice of images in Shakespeares sonnets and ancient Chinese poetry is closely related to the background of The Times. Shakespeares choice of images focuses more on seasonal animals, while the images in ancient Chinese poetry are more inclined to choose plants and the moon, and the expressions of emotions in ancient Chinese poetry are consistent.

Abstract:Harmony in diversity is the basic requirement of the comparative study of Chinese and foreign poetics. Expressionism, as an important school of western literature, focuses on intuition and emphasizes performance. Their works focus on the expression of emotions, using a variety of artistic means to reflect the people’s inner activities and mental state, while ignoring the description of the form of the object, often in the form of distortion and abstraction of reality. Therefore, in the works of expressionist writers and artists, abstract, deformation, symbol, illusion and so on are presented. Chinese ancient literature also attached great importance to expression, but the view of expression in expressionism literature was obviously different from that in traditional Chinese poetics. These differences are influenced not only by the time factors, but also by the national cultural differences. Through the comparative study of the two, we can find the differences and connections of expression between Expressionism and Chinese traditional poetics and promote the further development of the expression theory in contemporary Chinese literature.

Abstract:This paper attempts to probe into English translation of fuzzy beauty of classical Chinese poetry via imagery. Classical Chinese poetry is the cream of Chinese culture. It attracts millions of Chinese and western readers with its subtle and profound fuzzy beauty. The ultimate requirement of English translation of classical Chinese poetry lies in transferring its fuzzy beauty. Fuzzy beauty of classical Chinese poetry falls into three categories: fuzzy beauty in form, fuzzy beauty in imagery and fuzzy beauty in artistic conception. Imagery, being the soul of classical Chinese poetry, serves as a communicative and operational medium of transference of fuzzy beauty. The essence of fuzzy beauty consists in "gaps of indeterminacy" which conjures up the reader's unrestrained association. "Gaps of indeterminacy" constitute the "appealing structure" in a text which is subject to the reader's free interpretation according to his own "horizon of expectation". Fuzzy aesthetics sheds light on the aesthetic features of fuzzy beauty, and the hierarchical structure of fuzzy beauty in fuzzy aesthetics corresponds to different layers of fuzzy beauty of classical Chinese poetry. Therefore, both aesthetics of reception and fuzzy aesthetics are of instructive value to English translation of classical Chinese poetry. This paper is composed of five sections. The introductory section is concerned with the significance and purpose of the research. The second section reveals in detail fuzzy beauty in classical Chinese poetry. In the third section, the techniques and principle for translation of poetic fuzzy beauty are put forward in light of aesthetics of reception and fuzzy aesthetics and imagery is recommended as an ideal medium of transference of fuzzy beauty. The fourth section centers on how to transfer fuzzy beauty of classical Chinese poetry using imagery as a medium, analyses and proposals are given from such angles as fuzzy modifiers, syntax, juxtaposition, and cultural influences. A natural conclusion is drawn in the last section.

Abstract:Similar to other sonnets, Edmund Spenser’s Amoretti followed Petrarchan courtship but also demonstrated the unique Spenserian form. Spenser’s superb creative skills profoundly influenced his contemporaries and the English poets of later generations. Nevertheless, the translation of Spenser’s sonnets began exceedingly late in China with few results. Guided by the horizon of expectation in reception aesthetics, this study compared Cao Minglun and Hu Jialuan’s versions of Amoretti Sonnet 67 (Amoretti 67) based on their content, rhyme, and language style. The main question is to understand what horizons of expectations Hu and Cao’s translations reflect based on reception aesthetics, and how do Hu and Cao’s horizons fuse with the original author’s horizon of expectation? Guided by translators’ vision of expectation, Hu emphasized that both the content and style of the translation should be faithful to the original text. Thus, Hu’s translation is the closest to the original poem. Contrarily, Cao’s translation sought a balance between the original text and the translation. Cao aimed to maintain the content and format of the original poetry while capitalizing on the strengths of the Chinese language. Both Chinese versions embody their translator’s values. The significance of this study extends to its implications for Chinese readers delving into Spenser’s poetic world. Analyzing Cao and Hu’s diverse strategies empowers readers to navigate Amoretti 67’s depth, fostering understanding of Spenser’s artistry and the intricacies of translation.
On the Theme of the Emotional Pattern and Stylistic Characteristics of the Human-Goddess Love Described in the Prose Poems from the Late Han Dynasty to Three Kingdoms and the Jin Dynasty

Abstract:The prose poems with the theme of the human-goddess love appeared from the late Han Dynasty to Three Kingdoms and the Jin Dynasty.Represented by the theme of the goddess in Cao Zhi's Luoshenfu(An Ode the Goddess of the Luo River),they featured the confrontation between the human instinctive love and the constrains of feudal ethics,which is far form being obvious in political implication or in taking the goddess as the symbol of the transcendental ideal.Similarly,those with the theme of preventing love represented by Tao Yuanming's Xianqingfu(preventing love) revealed the same subject matter of emotion on the confrontation between the said love and the constrains.Therefore,″goddess″ and ″preventing love″,just like both sides of a coin,are two inseparable themes at that time.This finds expression in a writer's creating these two types of prose poems at the same time.Furthermore,they both express the common pattern of emotion and aim at describing the human experience of real feelings and the above-mentioned confrontation,which is characterized by relieving the unrealized human emotions instead of restraining the budding love.This emotion theme,if compared with that of the human-goddess love in the supernatural stories written during the period of Three Kingdoms,the Jin Dynasty and the Northern and Southern Dynasties,reflects the strong demand of the individual's life instinct and its expression in reality.The reason that the said love theme could be demonstrated in the prose poems is because the writers of this particular genre in the late Han Dynasty, Three Kingdoms and the Jin Dynasty used and developed the genre.Specifically,the writers made appropriate use of artistic fabrication and the first person narration as the carrier of love theme.Besides,they found the stylistic pattern in which they fully expressed themselves by utilizing the function of elaboration and that of praising and satirizing.The writes of prose poems at that time,following the then famous writer Song Yu's combined pattern of praising and satirizing,actually changed the aim of prose poems remonstrating with the sovereign by praising,thus turning their function into that of expressing individual love and life.As poetry began to feature sensual pleasures in the Southern Dynasties,palace poetry gradually became the mainstream form of literature.Its direct influence on the prose poems with the human-goddess love theme resulted in the reduction of such poems.
