Abstract:On 2019 May 6, the Lunar Lander Neutron & Dosimetry (LND) Experiment on board the Chang'E-4 on the far-side of the Moon detected its first small solar energetic particle (SEP) event with proton energies up to 21MeV. Combined proton energy spectra are studied based on the LND, SOHO/EPHIN and ACE/EPAM measurements which show that LND could provide a complementary dataset from a special location on the Moon, contributing to our existing observations and understanding of space environment. Velocity dispersion analysis (VDA) has been applied to the impulsive electron event and weak proton enhancement and the results demonstrate that electrons are released only 22 minutes after the flare onset and $\sim$15 minutes after type II radio burst, while protons are released more than one hour after the electron release. The impulsive enhancement of the in-situ electrons and the derived early release time indicate a good magnetic connection between the source and Earth. However, stereoscopic remote-sensing observations from Earth and STA suggest that the SEPs are associated with an active region nearly 100$^\circ$ away from the magnetic footpoint of Earth. This suggests that the propagation of these SEPs could not follow a nominal Parker spiral under the ballistic mapping model and the release and propagation mechanism of electrons and protons are likely to differ significantly during this event.

Abstract:Due to lack of in situ observations, people still know little about the formation conditions and the internal structure of lunar mini-magnetosphere. Here we present the first energetic neutral atom (ENA) measurement on lunar surface by the Chang'E-4 mission. It is found that when downstream from the Imbrium antipode magnetic anomalies, the measured ENA fluxes are generally decreased, suggesting a mini-magnetosphere that can shield the lunar surface from the solar wind. Further studies show that the shielding effect can only be found when the ion inertia length is small ( < 120 km) and some solar wind ions can penetrate into the mini-magnetosphere with a penetrating efficiency positively correlated with the solar wind dynamic pressure. When the ion inertia length is large, no shielding effect can be found. With the help of Hall MHD simulations, we confirm the existence of a mini-magnetosphere and the shielding effect anti-correlated with ion inertia length.

Abstract:China's Chang'e-4 (CE-4) mission is the first human lander/rover mission on the far side of the Moon. Its probe is composed of a lander, rover, and the Queqiao relay satellite. Queqiao was successfully launched on May 21, 2018, and entered the halo orbit of the L2 point on June 14, becoming the first satellite connecting the Earth and the Moon's far side. The lander carrying Yutu-2 was successfully launched on December 8, 2018, and landed in the Von Kármán crater (45.5° S, 177.6° E) at 10:26 (UTC+8) on January 3, 2019. The CE-4 probe carried nine science instruments. Four instruments are on the lander: a landing camera (LCAM), a terrain camera (TCAM), a low-frequency radio spectrometer (LFRS), and a lunar lander neutrons and dosimetry (LND) provided by Germany. Four instruments are on the rover: a panoramic camera (PCAM), a visible and near-infrared imaging spectrometer (VNIS), a lunar penetrating radar (LPR), and an advanced small analyzer for neutrals (ASAN) provided by Sweden. The instrument on the relay satellite is the Netherlands-China Low-Frequency Explorer (NCLE). The scientific objectives of the CE-4 mission include (1) performing low-frequency radio-astronomical observations; (2) investigating the geomorphology, mineral compositions and shallow subsurface structure of the landing and roving sites; and (3) detecting the Earth-Moon space environment at the lunar far side. As of February 1, 2020, CE-4 has completed 14 lunar days of scientific exploration after one year of operation. The components, fight, scientific objectives and investigation of CE-4 are introduced in this paper. We also describe the accessibility of the initial archived science data and their preliminary analysis results.

Abstract:China's Chang'E-5 (CE-5) mission has successfully landed in the Northern Oceanus Procellarum of the Moon. Lunar mineralogical spectrometer (LMS), as one of the important payloads onboard CE-5 Lander–Ascender Combination, aims to study the physical and compositional properties of the landing area. This paper applies the Legendre phase function to correct the photometric effects on the LMS in situ spectra and reveal the photometric characteristic of the CE-5 landing area. LMS obtained the reflectance spectra in various geometric configurations by performing full-view scanning of the CE-5 landing area. By fitting these LMS spectral data, the parameters b=−0.29 and c=0.44 of the Legendre phase function were obtained. This indicates the strong forward scattering characteristic of the CE-5 landing area, which is similar to that of the Chang'E-4 (CE-4) landing area, and the side scattering is weaker than that of CE-4. In addition, we derived the FeO content of the landing area using the photometric-corrected LMS spectral data. Our results demonstrate that the estimated FeO content of the landing area is close to the laboratory measured data of the returned samples. The LMS in situ reflectance data will contribute to a better understanding of the physical and mineralogical properties of the CE-5 landing area.

Abstract:Abstract Chang’E 4 is the first mission to the far side of the Moon and consists of a lander, a rover, and a relay spacecraft. Lander and rover were launched at 18:23 UTC on December 7, 2018 and landed in the von Kármán crater at 02:26 UTC on January 3, 2019. Here we describe the Lunar Lander Neutron & Dosimetry experiment (LND) which is part of the Chang’E 4 Lander scientific payload. Its chief scientific goal is to obtain first active dosimetric measurements on the surface of the Moon. LND also provides observations of fast neutrons which are a result of the interaction of high-energy particle radiation with the lunar regolith and of their thermalized counterpart, thermal neutrons, which are a sensitive indicator of subsurface water content.

Abstract:The Advanced Small Analyzer for Neutrals (ASAN) on board the Chang’E-4 Yutu-2 rover first detected energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) originating from the lunar surface at various lunar local times on the lunar farside. In this work, we examine the ENA energy spectra, obtained in the first 23 lunar days from 2019 January 11 to 2020 October 12, and find a higher ENA differential flux on the lunar dawnside than on the duskside. Combined with Acceleration, Reconnection, Turbulence and Electrodynamics of the Moon’s Interaction with the Sun (ARTEMIS) data, we analyze the correlation between the ENA differential flux and solar wind parameters, such as flux, density, dynamic pressure, and velocity, for each ASAN energy channel on the dawnside and duskside. The results show that ENA differential flux is positively correlated with solar wind flux, density, and dynamic pressure and relatively lower on the duskside than on the dawnside. To determine the relationship between solar wind energy and ENA energy, we analyze the correlation between solar wind energy and ENA cutoff energy and temperature on the dawnside and duskside. The results show that the ENA cutoff energy and temperature are lower on the duskside than on the dawnside at the same solar wind energy. The difference between the ENA–solar wind observation on the dawnside and duskside is possibly caused by solar wind deflection and deceleration on the duskside, which can be attributed to the interaction between solar wind and the lunar magnetic anomalies located nearby in the northwestern direction of the Chang’E-4 landing site.

Abstract:Particle radiation on the Moon is influenced by a combination of galactic cosmic rays, high-energy solar particles, and secondary particles interacting on the lunar surface. When China's Chang'e-7 lander lands at the Moon's South Pole, it will encounter this complex radiation environment. Therefore, a payload detection technology was developed to comprehensively measure the energy spectrum, direction, and radiation effects of medium- and high-energy charged particles on the lunar surface. During the ground development phase, the payload performance was tested against the design specifications. The verification results indicate that the energy measurement ranges are 30 keV to 300 MeV for protons, 30 keV to 12 MeV for electrons, and 8 to 400 MeV/n for heavy ions. The energy resolution is 10.81% for 200 keV electrons of the system facing the lunar surface; the dose rate measurement sensitivity is 7.48 μrad(Si)/h; and the LET spectrum measurement range extends from 0.001 to 37.014 MeV/(mg/cm2). These comprehensive measurements are instrumental in establishing a lunar surface particle radiation model, enhancing the understanding of the lunar radiation environment, and supporting human lunar activities.

Abstract:Abstract Solar wind can directly interact with the lunar surface and bring a space weathering effect. Some solar wind protons can be scattered as energetic neutral atoms (ENAs), which include rich information of the solar wind–surface interaction. However, people still know little about the ENA truth on the lunar ground due to the lack of in situ measurements. Different from the previous in-orbit measurements, here we present the first ground-based ENA measurements by the Chang’E-4 rover and find a good correlation between the mean ENA energy and the solar wind energy. Moreover, the loss rate of ENA energy can strongly depend on both the solar wind energy and the solar zenith angle (SZA), in which the energy loss rate can be enhanced by 73% when the solar wind energy increases from 400 to 1400 eV and can be reduced by 32% when the SZA increases from 57° to 71°. Combined with numerical simulations by SDTrimSP code, we propose that the solar wind protons can penetrate deeper into the lunar surface with a longer path length when the solar wind energy is higher or the SZA is lower, which results in a larger energy loss rate for the scattered ENAs. Our results provide an important constraint for the solar wind–surface research and have general implications in studying the surficial space weathering of the Moon and other airless bodies.

Abstract:The photometric properties of the uppermost lunar regolith are used in the spectroscopic study. China's Chang'E-5 (CE-5) mission successfully landed in the Northern Oceanus Procellarum of the Moon, carrying the scientific payload Lunar Mineralogical Spectrometer (LMS). LMS performed full-view scanning and obtained the reflectance spectra in various geometric configurations. The photometric properties, including the single-scattering albedo ω and two parameters of the Henyey-Greenstein phase function ( b , c ), were derived. Our modeling results showed weak backward scattering and strong forward scattering properties of the regolith at the CE-5 landing site. Meanwhile, the asymmetry parameter indicates that CE-5 regolith has weaker forward scattering than the Apollo lunar soil samples and the regolith at the Chang'E-4 landing site. The derived Hapke parameters can be used for comparison with that of the returned lunar sample, supporting further studies of lunar spectroscopy, and can be the ground truth of the CE-5 landing area.

Abstract:The Chang'E-6 (CE-6) mission successfully achieved return of the first samples from the far side of the Moon. The sampling site of CE-6 is located in the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) basin-the largest, deepest and oldest impact basin on the Moon. The 1935.3 g of CE-6 lunar samples exhibit distinct characteristics compared with previous lunar samples. This study analyses the physical, mineralogical, petrographic and geochemical properties of CE-6 lunar scooped samples. The CE-6 soil has a significantly lower bulk density (0.983 g/cm3) and true density (3.035 g/cm3) than the Chang'E-5 (CE-5) samples. The grain size of the CE-6 soil exhibits a bimodal distribution, indicating a mixture of different compositions. Mineralogically, the CE-6 soil consists of 32.6% plagioclase (anorthite and bytownite), 19.7% augite, 10% pigeonite and 3.6% orthopyroxene, and with low content of olivine (0.5%) but high content of amorphous glass (29.4%). Geochemically, the bulk composition of CE-6 soil is rich in Al2O3 (14%) and CaO (12%) but low in FeO (17%), and trace elements of CE-6 soil such as K (∼630 ppm), U (0.26 ppm), Th (0.92 ppm) and rare-earth elements are significantly lower than those of the lunar soils within the Procellarum KREEP Terrane. The local basalts are characterized by low-Ti (TiO2, 5.08%), low-Al (Al2O3 9.85%) and low-K (∼830 ppm), features suggesting that the CE-6 soil is a mixture of local basalts and non-basaltic ejecta. The returned CE-6 sample contains diverse lithic fragments, including local mare basalt, breccia, agglutinate, glasses and leucocrate. These local mare basalts document the volcanic history of the lunar far side, while the non-basaltic fragments may offer critical insights into the lunar highland crust, SPA impact melts and potentially the deep lunar mantle, making these samples highly significant for scientific research.
Chang'E‐5 In Situ Spectra Reveal Photometric Properties of the Lunar Surface

Abstract:Abstract The Chang’E‐5 (CE‐5) lunar mineralogical spectrometer (LMS) obtained an in situ multiangular spectral data set, with which this work aims to study the photometric properties of the lunar surface in the CE‐5 sampling area. We first converted the LMS Level 2B radiance data to reflectance, and then spliced it and processed thermal correction. We also used a millimeter‐scale digital elevation model (DEM) to re‐calculate local illumination and observation conditions considering the high‐resolution topography at the landing site. We analyzed the multiangular reflectance data set with a Hapke modeling approach aimed at characterizing the scattering properties of the surface. In particular, we found that the surface exhibits a spectral signature typical of mafic materials and is close to the mature mare lunar soil. The position of the in situ photometric parameters in the hockey stick diagram indicates that CE‐5 lunar soil particles are forward scattering, irregular and with a low density of internal scatters. Furthermore, we found that all the in situ data (including CE‐3/4/5) and laboratory measurements exhibit forward scattering properties, but the orbiter remote sensing measurements are backward scattering. We attribute this discrepancy to the different resolution of the two data sets: the in situ analysis focuses on the individual particles, whereas remote sensing approach is sensitive to the particle complex. The Hapke parameters we derived can provide a reference for the further comprehensive analysis of remote sensing and in situ spectral data, especially, caution is advised when applying the photometric parameters derived from in situ or laboratory spectra to the remote sensing data.

Abstract:On January 3rd 2019, the Chang’e-4 mission successfully landed in the Von Kármán Crater inside the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) basin and achieved the first soft landing on the farside of the Moon. Lunar penetrating radar (LPR) equipped on the rover measured the shallow subsurface structure along the motion path for more than 700 m. LPR data could be used to obtain the dielectric properties of the materials beneath the exploration area, providing important clues as to the composition and source of the materials. Although the properties of the upper fine-grained regolith have been studied using various methods, the underlying coarse-grained materials still lack investigation. Therefore, this paper intends to estimate the loss tangent of the coarse-grained materials at depth ranges of ~12 and ~28 m. Stochastic media models with different rock distributions for the LPR finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation are built to evaluate the feasibility of the estimation method. Our results show that the average loss tangent value of coarse-grained materials is 0.0104±0.0027, and the abundance of FeOT+TiO2 is 20.08 wt.%, which is much higher than the overlying fine-grained regolith, indicating different sources.

Abstract:It was suspected that the horizon glow observed over the lunar terminator was caused by electrostatically‐levitated dust particles, but do high concentrations of dust particles really exist over the lunar terminator? This is an important question that cannot be answered even today. In fact, no in‐situ investigations about the lunar dust have been conducted on lunar surface since Apollo. Here we first report in‐situ investigations of lunar dust at Chang'E‐3 (CE‐3) landing site using solar cell probe (SCP). The results show that, different from Apollo's observation, the short‐circuit current of SCP did not decrease sharply during the first several lunations except the first lunation, indicating the recently developed minimalist qualitative model of sunrise‐driven dust transport might not be applicable at the geologically young CE‐3 landing site. In addition, within detector's detection limit, no abrupt changes in dust concentration were observed above the sharp sunlight/shadow boundaries on lunar surface.

Abstract:Context. In 2019, China’s Chang’E-4 (CE-4) probe landed on the far side of the Moon: a first in lunar exploration. The Lunar Penetrating Radar (LPR) mounted on the Yutu-2 rover allows the mapping of the near-surface structure and the dielectric permittivity of the landing area. The dielectric properties of the lunar soil affect the propagation of the LPR signals, which can be used to infer the depth of sub-surface boundaries and derive the composition of the component materials. Aims. Our objectives are to estimate the fine-resolution spatial distribution of relative permittivity and to improve the interpretation of the geological processes combined with the radargram of the CE-4 landing area. Methods. We used a modified method that combines the F-K migration and the minimum entropy of the ground penetrating radar (GPR) signals to estimate the velocity and permittivity values; this has the advantage of obtaining the appropriate velocity and permittivity, even with the incomplete or unnoticeable hyperbolic curves in the radar image Results. The sub-surface stratification of the CE-4 landing area is seen in the first 31 lunar days of the LPR data. A fine-resolution dielectric permittivity profile ranging from ~2.3 to ~6.3 is obtained with our method, and the actual depths of the observed prominent sub-surface interfaces are determined, giving a maximum average depth of ~38 m. The thickness of the regolith layer is in the range of ~5.7–15.6 m, with an average of 11.8 m. The permittivity of the near-surface regolith (<30 cm) is ~2.78 ± 0.01, the bulk density is 1.57 ± 0.01 g cm −3 , which is close to the results of ~1.61 g cm −3 at the Apollo 15 landing area. The permittivity map is consistent with the radargram; the regolith and the paleo-regolith layer have relatively low permittivity and low echo strengths, while the rock debris has high permittivity and shows strong echos in the radargram. Two buried craters of different diameters beneath the navigation sites 4–11 and 16–31 are revealed in the radar profile. The permittivity distribution map can show detailed variations of material properties both inside and outside craters.

Abstract:We report accelerated particles observed by Solar Wind Ion Detectors (SWIDs) on Chang'E-1 spacecraft close to terminator regions of the Moon. As the spacecraft crosses the terminator, a stream of ions with energy of similar to 200eV/q are detected. As the spacecraft moves to the anti-subsolar point of the Moon, the energy of these ions increase by 600 similar to 1500eV. This phenomenon occurs at north/south pole when IMF B(y) component is dominant and negative/positive. It is proposed these particles are scattered solar wind protons, accelerated by the convection electric field of the solar wind and E x B drift in the ambipolar electric field at the flank of the lunar wake. This mechanism allows a new portion of solar wind protons to enter the central lunar wake, and provides a possibility to study the property of proton scattering at the dayside of the Moon. Abstract:Accurate assessments of surface temperatures on the Moon are important for understanding the physical properties of the lunar surface regolith and thermal effects on the reflectance spectra beyond 2 μm. The local time resolved spectral measurements of the same region were used to estimate the surface temperature at the Chang'E‐4 landing site. The results show that the surface temperatures at the landing site at lunar local time 14:28‐14:41 are 346±8 K. The spectral absorptions at ∼2 μm of the lunar surface are overestimated without sufficient thermal removal, and consequently may have resulted in overestimation of pyroxene and/or glasses at the landing site. The results play a foundation for correcting thermal effects of reflectance data that will be acquired by Chang'E‐5 and 6 and possible other future Chang'E missions.

Abstract:The Chinese lunar probe Chang'E-4 successfully landed in the Von Kármán crater on the far side of the Moon. This paper presents the topographic and geomorphological mapping and their joint analysis for selecting the Chang'E-4 landing site in the Von Kármán crater. A digital topographic model (DTM) of the Von Kármán crater, with a spatial resolution of 30 m, was generated through the integrated processing of Chang'E-2 images (7 m/pixel) and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) Laser Altimeter (LOLA) data. Slope maps were derived from the DTM. Terrain occlusions to both the Sun and the relay satellite were studied. Craters with diameters ≥ 70 m were detected to generate a crater density map. Rocks with diameters ≥ 2 m were also extracted to generate a rock abundance map using an LRO narrow angle camera (NAC) image mosaic. The joint topographic and geomorphological analysis identified three subregions for landing. One of them, recommended as the highest-priority landing site, was the one in which Chang'E-4 eventually landed. After the successful landing of Chang'E-4, we immediately determined the precise location of the lander by the integrated processing of orbiter, descent and ground images. We also conducted a detailed analysis around the landing location. The results revealed that the Chang'E-4 lander has excellent visibility to the Sun and relay satellite; the lander is on a slope of about 4.5° towards the southwest, and the rock abundance around the landing location is almost 0. The developed methods and results can benefit future soft-landing missions to the Moon and other celestial bodies.

Abstract:When the lander approaches the lunar surface, the rocket exhaust will erode the surface and eject massive high-speed dust, which could damage the payloads on the lander or interfere with subsequent surface operations. This process also provides a unique opportunity to study the plume-dust interaction and the wind erosion on the surface of airless body such as the Moon. Previously, limited knowledge was obtained from Apollo landing images and a simplified erosion model is built to study the erosion process. With high-quality data acquired in the landing process of Chang'E-4 (CE-4) mission, for the first time, we aim to quantify the dust ejection angle and erosion depth for a low-thrust lander, test the effectiveness of the current erosion model, and provide reference information for future landing missions. We use image measurement methods to extract key parameters such as dust ejection angle and erosion depth from the landing image of CE-4. For comparison with the observation, we also employ an erosion model to estimate the erosion thickness. The dust appears at about 7 s before the lander touch the surface, with a height of 13 m above the surface. When the nozzle altitude was about 0.6 m, the dust ejection angle is measured to be above 7 degrees, while the dust ejection angle calculated by the particle trajectory method is less than 4.3 degrees for particle sizes smaller than 1 mm. For the first time, an average erosion depth of 0.7 cm is measured between 1.12 m and 2 m from the nozzle centerline for a low-thrust lander. The measurement corresponds to an erosion time duration from 1.1 s before landing to 0.4 s after landing. The measured erosion range using CE-4 data is much larger than the estimated erosion radius given by the previous erosion model. It indicates that the dust's angular distribution, local topography of the landing area, and other factors are important in improving the precision of the erosion model.

On 3 January 2019, China’s Chang’E-4 (CE-4) successfully landed on the eastern floor of Von Kármán crater within the South Pole-Aitken Basin (SPA), becoming the first spacecraft in history with a controlled landing on the farside of the Moon. Yutu-2 rover traveled for ~345 m during the first twelve lunar day period with the Lunar Penetrating Radar (LPR) observing along the traverse. The LPR is an ultra-wide band impulse ground penetrating radar, operating at two center frequencies of 60 and 500 MHz. Here we report the observations of the LPR. The high frequency channel (500MHz) detected the subsurface structure at the depth of ~40 m. The penetration depth is more than three times as deep as that at the Chang’E-3 (CE-3) landing site, indicating low loss materials at the CE-4 landing site. The section, from the surface to a depth of ~40 m, is divided into three units, showing alternating bright and dark echo strength and imbeded with large rocks. The layers might be non-uniform ejecta of large craters surrounding Von Kármán crater and homogeneous paleoregolith of weathered ejecta. All these evidences imply a very complex impact history over the Moon’s farside.
