Abstract:Background: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent pollutants routinely detected in aquatic ecosystems. It is, therefore, necessary to assess the link between deleterious marine biota PAH effects, especially in commercialized and consumed animals, environmental health status, and potential human health risks originating from the consumption of contaminated seafood products. Thus, this review seeks to verify the relationships of ecotoxicological studies in determining effect and safety concentrations on animals routinely consumed by humans. Methods: A total of 52 published studies between 2011 and 2021, indexed in three databases, were selected following the PICO methodology, and information on test animals, evaluated PAH, and endpoints were extracted. Results: Benzo(a)pyrene and phenanthrene were the most investigated PAHs in terms of biomarkers and test organisms, and mussels were the most evaluated bioindicator species, with an emphasis on reproductive responses. Furthermore, despite the apparent correlation between environmental PAH dynamics and effects on aquatic biota and human health, few assessments have been performed in a multidisciplinary manner to evaluate these three variables together. Conclusions: The links between human and environmental sciences must be strengthened to enable complete and realistic toxicity assessments as despite the application of seafood assessments, especially to mussels, in bioassays, the connection between toxicological animal responses and risks associated with their consumption is still understudied.

Assessment of cancer and dietary risks in commercially valuable marine organisms in coast of a region of future exploration (Equatorial South Atlantic)

Abstract:The Equatorial South Atlantic region, spanning over 1700 km, is currently undergoing extensive exploitation through various activities such as oil extraction, desalination plants, marine mineral explorations, and wind power for green hydrogen production. This undoubtedly also contributes to the exacerbation of pre-existing chronic environmental impacts. This study aims to investigate the concentrations of 60 substances, categorized as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) from various classes including: polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), as well as Pyrethroids (PPs), Triazines (TPs) and Organophosphates (OPPs) pesticides in consumable fish, shellfish, and crabs. The bivalve (Mytella charruana), crab (Ucides cordatus), and catfish (Sciades herzbergii) samples were collected in areas of ecological, environmental and economic importance. This data was used to estimate concentrations in the organisms, and to calculate cancer and human health risk. The most prevalent pollutant classes in the organisms were OCPs, followed by TPs and PPs. Shellfish and fish samples had more compounds indicating health risks, when compared to crabs. The substances causing cancer risks varied across organisms and study areas. The heightened cancer risks linked to specific compounds in various species highlight the urgent need to address persistent pollutants to prevent long-term health impacts on both humans and wildlife. Compounds such as PPs, TPs, and OPPs pose significant risks of neurotoxicity and endocrine disruption. This study underscores the interconnectedness of environmental and human health in coastal ecosystems, calling for continuous monitoring and adaptive management strategies to protect these fragile environments and the communities that rely on them.

Abstract:This work presents an integrated overview of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons' (PAHs) ubiquity comprising environmental contamination in the air, aquatic ecosystems, and soils; characterizes the contamination in biota; and identifies main biomonitors and human exposure to PAHs and associated health risks. Urban centers and industrial areas present increased concentrations in the air (1344.4-12,300 versus 0.03-0.60 ng/m3 in industrial/urban and rural zones) and soils (0.14-1.77 × 106 versus 2.00-9.04 × 103 versus 1.59-5.87 × 103 ng/g in urban, forest, and rural soils), respectively. Increased concentrations were found in coastal zones and superficial waters as well as in sediments (7.00 × 104-1.00 × 109 ng/g). Benzo(a)pyrene, a carcinogenic PAH, was found in all environmental media. Mosses, lichens, tree leaves, bivalves, cephalopods, terrestrials' snails, and honeybees are good biomonitors of biota contamination. More studies are needed to improve characterization of PAHs' levels, distribution, and bioaccumulation in the environmental media and assess the associated risks for biota and human health. Actions and strategies to mitigate and prevent the bioaccumulation of PAHs in the environment and trophic chains toward the WHO's One-Health Perspective to promote the health of all ecosystems and human life are urgently needed.
Enabling the collective to assist the individual: CoREAD, a self-organising reading environment

Abstract:CoREAD, software that enables learners to collaborat e indirectly while reading a text, was designed using a self-organising systems approach. Using CoREAD learners highlight portions of the text they deem important. The font colour of the te xt is then modified based on the collective history f learners’ actions, indicating the importance of the ext sections (e.g. red for high importance). This dynamic text becomes a tool for future learners as they read the text and decide which sections are important. In this manner, the learners themselves – often an untapped resource assist each other. Results from a pilot study suggest that the software enables relatively stable patterns – “collective wisdom” about the text to emerge from the indirec t collaboration of the learners. Educational Context: Problem If learners in post-secondary institutions are to b ecome successful life-long learners, particularly i n professional and learned disciplines, then they require the ability to read disciplinary texts (journal articles, resea rch reports, literary analyses, etc.). Such texts are constantly being pu blished and so the knowledge they collectively cont ain is therefore very dynamic. As such, typical textbooks can not adequat ely reflect, in real-time, this changing knowledge base. However, educators have good reasons for using textbooks. Te xtbooks are designed to cover numerous topics very quickly and in a manner that (it is hoped) will be “easier” for stud ents to understand. One might well ask if the skill required to read textbooks so as to perform well on assessments are the same skills needed to grasp disciplinary texts? Does this prepare students to learn from and be critical of disciplin ary texts, for example? (also see J. S. Brown, Coll ins, & Duguid, 1989) However, disciplinary texts might prove challenging for many students who may need assistance. Feedbac k during learning has been shown to be more beneficial than feedback after the fact. Therefore, assistance while reading is needed. One way to do so would be to analyse each text base d on expert knowledge of the domain and then provid e students with hints, guiding questions, additional resources etc. Unfortunately, this is very time consuming and unl ikely to be adopted when the texts from year to year (or semester to se me ter) are constantly changing. A flexible and ada ptive system was therefore sought. The approach adopted here was to create software th t enables learners to collaborate indirectly while reading a text. As learners read expository text a simple but crucial task for successful comprehension is locating the m ost relevant information within the text (A. L. Brown & Day, 198 3; Winograd, 1984). Learners with limited prior kno wledge about the subject matter being read will be at a particul ar disadvantage (Dole, Duffy, Roehler, & Pearson, 1 991), as will those who are generally less capable readers. Abstract:Coastal marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs, are severely threatened by climate changes, overexploitation, and marine pollution. Particularly, environmental pollution caused by petroleum-derived substances is poorly studied in coral reefs in tropical developing countries, with a total absence of data about these contaminants in some regions. In this work, we determined the levels of conventional and unconventional PAHs in the tissue and skeleton of the coral Montastraea cavernosa in a seascape scale of the Southwest Atlantic. We sampled in 12 coral reefs adjacent to the coast along approximately 200 km. We found 14 PAHs, 2 Oxy-PAHs, and 15 Nitro-PAHs in the samples, and among them, benzo[a]pyrene, chrysene, benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene and dibenz[a,h]anthracene, which are mutagenic, teratogenic and carcinogenic substances. Skeletons presented predominantly lower quantities of ∑PAHs than the respective tissue, except for the skeletons from one reef severely impacted by oil spills. The ∑PAHs levels were lower in a bay near an urbanized region than in open sea reefs. Diagnostic ratios indicate mixogenic sources, with the predominance of petrogenic origin. Our study provides the first occurrence of PAHs, Nitro-PAHs, and Oxy-PAHs distribution in corals from the Southwest Atlantic Ocean, and we expect that these data will help to evaluate any future impacts and management of this ecosystem.
Quantitative risk-benefit assessment of Portuguese fish and other seafood species consumption scenarios

Abstract:Portugal has high fish/seafood consumption, which may have both risks and benefits. This study aims to quantify the net health impact of hypothetical scenarios of fish/seafood consumption in the Portuguese population using a risk-benefit assessment methodology. Consumption data from the National Food, Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey 2015-2016 (n 5811) were used to estimate the mean exposure to methylmercury and EPA + DHA in the current and the alternative scenarios considered. Alternative scenarios (alt) were modelled using probabilistic approaches to reflect substitutions from the current consumption in the type of fish/seafood (alt1: excluding predatory fishes; alt2: including only methylmercury low-level fishes) or in the frequency of weekly fish/seafood consumption (alt3 to alt6: 1, 3, 5 or 7 times a week, replacing fish/seafood meals with meat or others). The overall health impact of these scenarios was quantified using disability-adjusted life years (DALY). In the Portuguese population, about 11 450 DALY could be prevented each year if the fish/seafood consumption increased to a daily basis. However, such a scenario would result in 1398 extra DALY considering the consumption by pregnant women and the respective risk on fetal neurodevelopment. Our findings support a recommendation to increase fish/seafood consumption up to 7 times/week. However, for pregnant women and children, special considerations must be proposed to avoid potential risks on fetal neurodevelopment due to methylmercury exposure.

Abstract:Marine fishes are consumed in large quantities by humans as nutritious food. However, the intake of fish polluted by chemicals may pose a severe threat to human health. This study measured the concentrations of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the muscles of 22 species of marine fish from two coastal regions, i. e., Tanmen and Zhuhai, identified the source of PAHs, and assessed the human health risk by dietary exposure. Total PAH (sigma 16PAHs) levels in Tanmen and Zhuhai fish were in the range of 24.29-684.83 ng g-1 dry weight (dw) and 13.74-42.59 ng g-1 dw, averaging 161.46 ng g-1 dw and 31.21 ng g-1 dw, respectively. Compared with other regions in the world, PAH concentrations in Tanmen fish were at median levels, and Zhuhai fish were at low levels. Low molecular weight PAHs (with 2- and 3-rings) were the predominant compounds detected. Molecular diagnostic ratios suggested that PAHs in Tanmen mainly originated from petrogenic sources such as vessel operations or tanker accidents, while Zhuhai fish were mainly polluted by pyrolytic sources such as combustion of coal and wood. The human health risk assessment results indicated that the risk of PAH intake via fish consumption from Zhuhai was negligible, while five species from Tanmen may pose potential health risks to local residents.

Abstract:The spatio-temporal distribution, source apportionment, and risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) were investigated in the Sombreiro River Estuary, Niger Delta, Nigeria. Water, sediment and oysters were obtained from the estuary and analyzed for 16 priority PAHs using gas chromatograph coupled with mass selective detector after extraction. The levels of the ∑16-PAHs in the water, sediment and oyster ranged from 25-10079 μg/L, 495-12811 μg/kg and 489-10823 μg/kg respectively for all locations and seasons. The results showed significant spatio-temporal variations in PAHs concentrations in all the matrices. The ecological risk assessment revealed high risk posed by the PAHs level to the estuarine ecosystem. The health risk indicated unacceptable carcinogenic risk to human via ingestion of oysters. Besides, for water and sediments, both ingestion and dermal pathways indicated unacceptable cancer risk. Source apportionment suggested that the PAHs in the estuary were from both pyrogenic and petrogenic sources.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were assessed in 65 atmospheric particulate matter (PM10) samples collected at a coastal urban area of Southwest Atlantic Europe during the 1-year period. Analytical methodology was successfully validated in terms of limits of detection and quantification, linearity, precision and trueness by using ERM CZ100 reference material and analytical recovery studies. Status of PM10-bound PAHs and their relationship with other PM10 constituents (major ions, trace metals, equivalent black carbon (eBC) and UV-absorbing particulate matter (UVPM)) in an area where few data are available is provided. Benzo(b)fluoranthene (BbF) and benzo(e)pyrene (BeP) were observed to be predominant in all samples analysed with average concentrations of 1.6 and 1.5 ng m−3, respectively. Furthermore, high RSDs were achieved for PAHs during the sampling period, which reflects inherent heterogeneity of the atmospheric particles besides weather conditions variations. Statistical significant seasonal changes in PAH concentrations during summer and winter seasons were not found. Data obtained from molecular PAH indices, univariate analysis, principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) suggested a pyrogenic origin derived from the continuous harbour activity and marine and road traffic emissions at the studied urban site throughout the year. Additionally, major ion and metal(oid) concentrations in PM10 samples were also used as tracers of PAH origin and for PM10 source exploration. Linear and quadratic models have shown that the PAH concentrations exhibited correlation with some metals (Ba, Bi, Cu, Pb, Sb and Zn) and NO3− concentrations. Finally, carcinogenic and mutagenic potencies and inhalation cancer risk (ILCRinh) posed by PM10-bound PAHs were assessed.

Abstract:This study aimed to characterize air pollution and the associated carcinogenic risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) at an urban site, to identify possible emission sources of PAHs using several statistical methodologies, and to analyze the influence of other air pollutants and meteorological variables on PAH concentrations.The air quality and meteorological data were collected in Oporto, the second largest city of Portugal. Eighteen PAHs (the 16 PAHs considered by United States Environment Protection Agency (USEPA) as priority pollutants, dibenzo[a,l]pyrene, and benzo[j]fluoranthene) were collected daily for 24 h in air (gas phase and in particles) during 40 consecutive days in November and December 2008 by constant low-flow samplers and using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane filters for particulate (PM10 and PM2.5 bound) PAHs and pre-cleaned polyurethane foam plugs for gaseous compounds. The other monitored air pollutants were SO2, PM10, NO2, CO, and O3; the meteorological variables were temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, total precipitation, and solar radiation. Benzo[a]pyrene reached a mean concentration of 2.02 ng m−3, surpassing the EU annual limit value. The target carcinogenic risks were equal than the health-based guideline level set by USEPA (10−6) at the studied site, with the cancer risks of eight PAHs reaching senior levels of 9.98 × 10−7 in PM10 and 1.06 × 10−6 in air. The applied statistical methods, correlation matrix, cluster analysis, and principal component analysis, were in agreement in the grouping of the PAHs. The groups were formed according to their chemical structure (number of rings), phase distribution, and emission sources. PAH diagnostic ratios were also calculated to evaluate the main emission sources. Diesel vehicular emissions were the major source of PAHs at the studied site. Besides that source, emissions from residential heating and oil refinery were identified to contribute to PAH levels at the respective area. Additionally, principal component regression indicated that SO2, NO2, PM10, CO, and solar radiation had positive correlation with PAHs concentrations, while O3, temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed were negatively correlated.

Abstract:Increased industrialization and consumption of fossil fuels in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (MRSP), Brazil, have caused a growth of the particulate matter emissions to the atmosphere and an increase in population health problems. Particulate and gaseous phase samples were collected in different short campaigns (2015, 2016, and 2017) near an urban-industrial area. Organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and its derivatives (nitro and oxy-PAH), n-alkanes, hopanes, and pesticides were determined. The Salmonella/microsome test confirmed the mutagenic activity of these samples. Among PAH, benzo(a)pyrene was detected as one of the most abundant compounds. Benzo(a)pyrene equivalent concentrations for PAH and nitro-PAH, and the associated risk of lung cancer, showed values above those recommended in the literature. The profile of n-alkanes confirmed the predominance of anthropogenic sources. Pesticide concentrations and estimated risks, such as the daily inhalation exposure and hazard quotient, suggest that exposure to these compounds in this area may be dangerous to human health.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are commonly found in the marine environment and can have harmful impacts on marine biodiversity. Therefore, investigation of the occurrence, source and risks of PAHs is of great importance to protect ecosystem and human health. The objectives of this work were to assess the concentrations and distribution of PAHs in marine sediments and in mollusc bivalve (Callista chione) along the Mediterranean coasts of Morocco and finally evaluate the risk to human health caused by exposure to PAHs. Five sediments samples and seventy five C. chione specimens, were collected along the Moroccan Mediterranean coasts. The ∑PAHs levels in sediment varied considerably, varying from 1 to 251 ng/g with an average of 50.38 ng/g, while values for bivalves varied from 1 to 51 ng/g dw with an average concentration of 16.76 ng/g dw. The PAHs profile indicates the dominance of 2 and 3 rings PAHs both in bivalves and sediments. PAH concentrations generally rise as one moves from northeast to northwest part of the studied area, closer to the Strait of Gibraltar. The assessment of PAH isomeric ratios revealed a mixed pyrolytic/petrogenic source. Based on the sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), the risk of PAHs in the sediments was considered to be comparatively low. Similarly, Ecological risk assessment based on risk quotient (RQ) and toxic equivalency factors (TEFs) revealed potentially low ecological risks from PAHs. Exposure to PAHs via bivalve consumption does not cause adverse impacts on the health of consumers following the calculated health risk indices. As the levels of PAHs in biota are not negligible, continuous mentioning marine organisms campaigns should be performed to highlight the distribution and concentration of PAHs and assess the risk for human health from consumption of seafood.

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) contamination on the Brazilian southeast coast has been highlighted, especially in relation to species of commercial importance. This study aimed to quantify the Hg concentration in species of mussels, fish, and crabs obtained from fishing colonies on the beaches of the west and south of the city of Rio de Janeiro, investigate the possible effect of seasonality, sex, and location sampling, and finally, the risk to consumer health in four different age groups. The difference between cooked and raw commercially available mussel samples was also verified. The main results highlight that the fish presented higher levels of Hg and that the mussel samples sold cooked presented lower levels of Hg when compared to the raw ones. For Micropogonias furnieri , Sardinella brasiliensis , and Callinectes spp., the season variable influenced Hg concentrations, while only for Merluccius merluccius was a difference between the sexes identified, with males having the highest values. Although Hg concentrations in animals were below the permitted limit, consumption of all species exceeded the monthly intake limit for this metal. For the hazard quotient (HQ) calculation, most species presented HQ > 1, especially when ingested by the child population. These results are fundamental for designing consumption strategies for these animals, in order to prioritize the acquisition of some species over others, depending on the location and/or season, for each age group, with the aim of maintaining seafood consumption with minimal risk to the population's health.

Abstract:This work extends previous studies on the occurrence of persistent halogenated compounds in consumer seafood from South China. Residual levels of 16 U.S. EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and 9 halogenated PAHs (HPAHs) were determined in three kinds of seafood products collected from 11 coastal cities in South China from June to October 2005. The results indicated that PAH components were low but detectable in a large number of seafood samples under investigation. The benzo(a)pyrene (BaP)-like TEQ concentrations of HPAHs were higher than those of PAHs for all three kinds of seafood. The relative contributions of each seafood group to the total estimated daily intake of PAHs and HPAHs were also analyzed. Shellfish contributed the most to the total exposure for all subgroups, followed by shrimp. Overall, the excess cancer risks (ECRs) induced by HPAHs were much greater than the risks posed by PAHs. Both ECRs for PAHs and HPAHs were far below 10(-4), showing no significant cancer risk via seafood consumption for people in South China. Sensitivity analysis results show the oral cancer slope factor of BaP is the most influential variable that contributed most to the total variance of risk for all subgroups.

Abstract:Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic, highly fluorinated, and emerging chemicals that are reported to be used for both industrial and domestic applications. Several PFAS have demonstrated persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic tendencies in marine organisms. Therefore, this research aims to characterize and quantify these compounds in both recreational fisheries and surface water samples, including estimating their bioaccumulation potentials. In addition, we assessed the potential contribution of biomonitoring tools such as oxidative stressors and morphological index on fish and ecological health. Finally, human health risk assessment was performed based on available toxicological data on limited PFAS. All PFAS were detected in at least one sample except for N-EtFOSAA in lobster which was below the method detection limit. ƩPFAS body burden ranged from 0.15 to 3.40 ng/g wet weight (ww) in blackfin tuna samples and 0.37-5.15 ng/g ww in lobster samples, respectively. Wilcoxon rank paired test (α = 0.05) shows that there is statistical significance (ρ < 0.05) of ƩPFAS between species. Bioaccumulation factors (BAF) suggest an increasing trend in PFAS classes (PFCAs < PFSAs < FTSs), with higher BAFs observed in tuna compared to lobster. Long-chain PFESAs and FASAA were reported at higher concentrations in lobster compared to Blackfin tuna due to their bioavailability through sediment-sorption interactions. Although Fulton's condition factor (FCF) indicates healthy fish conditions, oxidative stress biomarkers suggest that tuna and lobster might be under stress, which can weaken their immune system against exposure to emerging contaminants such as PFAS. Hazard risk (HR) suggests a low risk to human health based on the consumption of the studied species; however, the risk of contaminant exposure may be higher than estimated. This study is aimed at improving food safety by providing better understanding of how PFAS infiltrate into human diet and incorporating data on influence of contaminant exposure and environmental stressors on marine health.

Abstract:This study represents the concentrations of 16 PAHs in a commercial aquatic species Sauridaund squamis; Euthynnus affinis; Rhabdosargus haffara; Argyrops Spinifer; Nemipterus Japonicus, Oreochromis Niloticus; Trachurus Indicus; Peneus Japonicas; Scomber Japonicus; and Pomadasys Stridens, which were collected from the coastal area of the Suez Gulf waters. The analyses of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined using HPLC to identify the sources of PAHs. The results revealed that low molecular weight of PAHs were more than high molecular weight in aquatic species, Benzo (a)Anthracene/(Benzo (a) Anthracene + Chrysene) BaA/(BaA + Chr), Indeno (1,2,3-cd) pyrene/(Indeno (1,2,3-cd) pyrene + Benzo (ghi) perylene) IP/(IP + BP) and Fluoranthene/Pyrene (Fl/Pyr), they reflected that the PAHs sources in aquatic species are petrogenic as a main sources, pyrogenic sources. The study area was generally contaminated with hydrocarbons and continuous consumption of food from this area may pose public health hazards.

Abstract:We first estimated the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the brain, liver, bladder, roe, and muscle of four species of edible freshwater fish from the Beijing market. The distribution characteristics of PAHs in these tissues and organs were analyzed to determine their health risks to humans. The results showed that the residual levels of wet weight and lipid-normalized weight Sigma PAHs in various tissues of these fish ranged from 0.51 ng.g(-1) to 28.78 ng.g(-1) and from 93.62 ng.g(-1) to 8203.43 ng.g(-1), respectively. The wet weight contents of Sigma PAHs were relatively higher in the brain and lower in the liver and muscle. But the differences were not significant. And the differences of lipid-normalized weight PAHs were significant, which in the bighead carp were found significantly the highest, followed in crucian carp, and the lowest in grass carp and carp. The contents of Sigma PAHs were the highest in the liver and the lowest in the brain. In the tissues with a higher lipid content, higher residual levels of PAHs were found. The carcinogenic risks for humans from residual Sigma PAHs in the various fish tissues were far below 10(-5).
