Managing range-shifting, competing species in marine reserve networks: the importance of reserve configuration and transient dynamics in age-structured populations

Abstract:Marine reserves are increasingly used to address conservation and management goals globally. An emerging question is how reserves will interact with species that are shifting geographic ranges in response to warming ocean temperatures. Such range shifts can lead to negative interactions with existing resident species, and new harvest pressures, both of which could inhibit poleward movement and lead to range contraction. We used a set of strategic, spatially explicit, models of a hypothetical coastline with fishing on both a resident species with a stable geographic range and a climate-shifting species to investigate how alternative reserve designs would affect the ability of the shifting species to persist and increase in abundance over a 20-year window. Our results suggest that under most conditions, reserve networks composed of many small reserves would allow for greater persistence of the shifting species than a network composed of a single large reserves, or no reserves. Importantly, our results were sensitive to model structure: in a model without age structure, reserves allowed the shifting species to persist at faster climate velocities than without reserves. However, a model with age structure had transient dynamics driven by the time lag between recruitment and reproductive maturity. This time lag set the critical climate velocity beyond which persistence was not possible regardless of management, and caused a single large reserve to fare worse than a no-reserve scenario. Overall, our results suggest potential benefits of reserves to shifting species in terms of sustaining higher harvest rates, but not in promoting persistence at faster climate velocities.
