Abstract:The BAA Variable Star Section is the world's longest established organisation for the systematic observation of variable stars, having been formed in 1890. Its database contains nearly 3 million measurements going back to 1840 and is an important resource for researchers. The aim of this Presidential Address is to reveal some of the lesser known tales that lie deep within the database. This includes bringing to life stories about some of the people that were involved, especially in the early years, including Joseph Baxendell, Mary Adela Blagg and Arthur Stanley Williams, as well as shedding light on some of the stars that have been observed. Finally we look to the future as the Variable Star Section builds on the legacy of its forebears, ensuring that it shall always stay ahead of the curve.

Abstract:Colonel E.E. Markwick, CB, CBE, FRAS (1853 - 1925) pursued a distinguished career in the British Army, serving in Great Britain and other parts of the Empire and rising to the rank of Colonel. He was an original member of the BAA and went on to become President between 1912 and 1914. His main observational interest was the study of variable stars and he independently discovered two variables, RY Sgr and T Cen. He directed the BAA Variable Star Section from 1899 to 1909, organising its work along lines that are largely pursued even to this day and which other variable star organisations around the world have emulated.

Abstract:The centennial anniversary of the end of World War I brought leaders of tens of countries together in Paris. Despite the unity with which the commemorations were carried out, war memorials in different states have often accomplished various goals. This paper will focus on how WWI memorials have aided in the building of national collective memories in Britain, France, and Germany, and will assess their role in the creation and replication of national identities. Memorials evoking 'modes of collectivity' as well as 'atmospheres of remembrance' will be discussed to show the prevalence of commemorations in the victorious states.

Abstract:<p>Nineteen‐eighteen saw the formation of the world's first independent air force, and the inauguration of the first independent chaplaincy organisation devoted to military aviation. However, the neglected creation of the Chaplains' Branch of the Royal Air Force (RAF) towards the end of the First World War represents far more than just a minor footnote in the institutional history of Britain's armed forces. The circumstances of its creation, which occurred just as the German sociologist Max Weber was identifying scientific progress as driving the ineluctable "disenchantment of the world," not only belied this famous sociological maxim in the highly technological and supremely modern context of aerial warfare but also demonstrated the competence of Anglican chaplaincy methods and the resilience of British '"Christendom" in the context of a war which is widely perceived as having exposed and exacerbated the weaknesses of both.</p>

Abstract:The waging of war in the twentieth century required a nation state to mobilise and employ its entire population into productive effort beyond those with direct involvement in the various branches of the armed forces. The First World War witnessed an unprecedented expansion in British munitions and armaments manufacture, transport and the effort to supply an army of five million while maintaining acceptable living standards on the home front. These vital, interconnected objectives required the belligerents to muster every economic and financial resource at their disposal, and expenditure on such an unprecedented scale would have budgetary consequences long after the Armistice in November 1918. Domestic borrowing facilitated the thirteen-fold increase in government, but exactly how communities responded to national savings campaigns, and how genuinely popular savings movements developed in rural counties like Pembrokeshire, have not attracted extensive scholarly research. The focus of this article is to examine how the county of Pembrokeshire reacted to war savings propaganda and what influenced citizens in lending to the state.

Abstract:By the end of the 1910s, the British Dental Association Benevolent Fund was well-established and financially sound. Subscriptions and donations continued to grow but were never quite enough for the treasurer or indeed the committee, who were unable to fulfil all requests for help. Wartime restrictions on paper use meant that publicity was entirely in the hands for the editor of the British Dental Journal, as no separate annual reports were produced. Call-ups to military service decreased the numbers of volunteers willing or able to serve on the committee but applications for assistance in these years continued to grow. The introduction of the 1921 Dentist Act raised issues of resourcing and the future of the Charity for the committee. Novel fundraising suggestions were rife. Volunteer almoners were needed to monitor the increasing number of grant recipients.

Abstract:From an astronomical and relativistic point of view, the Great War began with the August, 1914 capture and imprisonment of the members of a German eclipse expedition that had gone to the Crimea to look, at the request of Einstein, for bending of starlight by the sun. And it ended in 1919 with the Eddington-inspired measurements of that light bending from Principe and Sobral and with the founding of the International Astronomical Union by scientists from "the countries at war with the Central Powers." In between came unprecedented, and in some ways unequaled, death and destruction. The scientists lost were mostly too young to have made an impact (Henry Moseley and Karl Schwarzschild are exceptions), but many of the best-known of the next generation had, if citizens of the belligerent countries, served on the battle lines, and most of the rest contributed in some other way. It may come as a surprise to find that both theoretical physics and observational astronomy of relevance to general relativity continued to take place and that there was a certain amount of communication of results, information, and even goods in both directions. The early post-war years saw something of a flowering of the subject, before the majority of physicists turned their attention to quantum mechanics and astronomers to stellar physics, though both had already been under consideration during the war. War-based bitterness between French and German scholars was surely part of the context in which Einstein and Henri Bergson faced off on 6 April 1922, in a debate on the nature of time, as part of an Einsteinian visit to Paris that had originally been planned for Fall, 1914.

Abstract:T. H. Astbury (1858-1922) was for many years the much-respected headmaster of a boys' junior school in the English market town of Wallingford. By night he was a dedicated amateur astronomer who enjoyed observing meteors, variable stars and many other objects. He began to search few new variable stars, his first discovery being the bright Cepheid variable, RT Aurigae. This, along with his discovery of 4 other variable stars, brought him to attention of some of the most famous professional astronomers of the age, including Herbert Hall Turner, Frank Dyson and Arthur Eddington.
“Medicinable Literature”: Bibliotherapy, Literary Caregiving, and the First World War

Abstract:Histories of bibliotherapy often emphasize the importance of the First World War in stimulating the development of bibliotherapeutic theory and practice. The word itself was used in a 1916 article by the American author Samuel McChord Crothers, while histories of bibliotherapy in the United Kingdom often foreground H. F. Brett-Smith's so-called "fever chart" of therapeutic books for treating shell-shocked soldiers. Despite this, however, we argue that a full account of wartime bibliotherapy (particularly the importance of British hospital libraries in its development) has yet to be told. This article draws on the papers of British military hospital personnel to describe the range of "literary caregiving" supporting the treatment of sick and wounded soldiers during the conflict. It traces the social and professional networks underlying these schemes. Finally, it shows how British volunteer librarians helped develop a specifically medicalized language of caregiving through books, thereby contributing to the early development of bibliotherapy.

The study focuses on the interdependent relationship between War and Cinema, highlighting how major participating countries used films for propaganda, morale-boosting, and ideological dissemination. As cinema became a dominant art form in the entertainment industry, it had significant socio-economic impacts, influencing national economies and public sentiment. The study also delves into the birth of "German Expressionism," a film technique that emerged in response to the societal trauma of the wars and significantly impacted modern cinema. This movement's distinct visual style and thematic depth continue to influence filmmakers even today. Additionally, the study examines the perspectives of civilians and soldiers on cinema during wartime periods, revealing how films served as both escapism and a reflection of reality. Through various case studies, the study illustrates cinema's role in shaping and reflecting the collective consciousness during these pivotal historical moments. This exploration offers valuable insights into how The Great Wars reshaped the landscape of cinema and left a lasting cultural legacy.

Abstract:The poetry of the First World War remains a singularly popular and powerful body of work. This Companion brings together leading scholars in the field to re-examine First World War poetry in English at the start of the centennial commemoration of the war. It offers historical and critical contexts, fresh readings of the important soldier-poets, and investigations of the war poetry of women and civilians, Georgians and Anglo-American modernists and of poetry from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the former British colonies. The volume explores the range and diversity of this body of work, its rich afterlife and the expanding horizons and reconfiguration of the term 'First World War Poetry'. Abstract:The Reverend Walter Bidlake, MA, FRAS, JP (1865-1938) was vicar of Crewe, England, for some 21 years. A member of the BAA, he was a keen amateur astronomer with an interest in celestial photography. At the request of another well-known BAA member, T.H.E.C. Espin, Bidlake took photographs of the night sky in support of Espin's search for dark nebulae in the Milky Way. This paper describes Bidlake's astronomical activities and life, including a high profile libel case he brought.

Abstract:Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite detailed reports on the design and the measured performance on orbit.

Abstract:This article examines the relationship between aspects of patriotism and militarism as fostered in Irish schools in the early twentieth century and their influence on past pupils who enlisted in the British Armed Forces during World War One (hereafter War), or fought as republican insurgents during the Easter Rising, 1916 (hereafter the Rising). It suggests that the complex influences of schools on pastmen who fought has been neglected and concludes by discussing the complexities of commemoration for those who fell, regardless of allegiance, suggesting that, possibly, contemporary acts of remembrance also serve schools in a manner that looks beyond honouring the dead.1

Abstract:This article argues two things about astronomy in the fiction of the Boy’s Own Paper (BOP) in the long 1890s: that astronomy is used to inspire muscular Christian moral improvement, broadly understood, and that we should understand this representation as enabled by the state of contemporary astronomy. At the close of the century, astronomy was an extremely popular science, and the locus of astronomical authority was unclear, permitting a wide variety of ideological positions within popularisation. This article first employs close readings of astronomical passages in the BOP from the 1890s to show that writers link adventure and heroism in frontier spaces to astronomy by using its most popular and engaging features alongside uncontested facts. Second, a discussion of A Marvellous Conquest: A Story of the Bayouda (1889), a serialised scientific romance by André Laurie, further demonstrates that the most important aspect of the use of astronomy within the BOP’s didactic project is its resonances with muscular Christianity rather than its scientific accuracy for educational purposes.

Abstract:Abstract Seventy-eight officers held senior command positions at army, corps, and divisional level in Britain’s three main field armies – the Second (North-West Europe), Eighth (Italy), and Fourteenth (Burma) – at the end of the Second World War. Using a range of source material, including their private papers, this article examines their socio-economic and family background, education, and early career development and finds that as a group, they were more representative of the middling classes than heretofore depicted. They were also far more diverse in education and place of birth: twenty-one were born outside Britain. As this article argues, the make-up of the three armies also differed, suggesting the formation of a more elite, home-grown, ‘first team’ for service with the Second Army in North-West Europe.

Abstract:Historians have argued that the Great War crystalized the idea of a modern popular monarchy in Britain and across the British imperial world. This version of sovereignty successfully negotiated the wartime crises of resurgent republicanism and the nationalisms that toppled other dynasties across Europe. Yet the story has largely been told 'from above'. The article draws on the extensive and under-examined testimony of soldiers and nurses from Australia, Canada and Britain to argue that wartime efforts by George V and his advisors to make the monarchy more accessible produced diverse and contradictory responses, which challenged imperial expectations. Shaped by human-interest journalism and populist pressure to reduce the cultural distance between monarchy and mass society, these personal accounts revise conceptions of royal patriotism. Letters, diaries and oral histories from the front and the home front reveal how reactions to meeting royalty close-up ranged from respect through casual and tourist interest to satire, derision and desacralization, as well as stimulating more overtly political demands. Men and women differed significantly in their attitudes to royalty, and the article explores how the monarchy was experienced as part of the masculine and feminine rituals of wartime everyday life.

Abstract:Between 1914 and 1918 several hundred thousand ‘enemy aliens’ were interned by the belligerent nations of the first world war, and many more civilians were trapped behind enemy lines in their own countries. This article looks at the efforts made by the International Committee of the Red Cross and other relief agencies to alleviate the plight of non-combatants held in internment camps. It also examines the dilemmas faced by neutral inspection teams, and asks why the ICRC in particular failed in its attempts to secure equal and humane treatment for civilian prisoners. The conclusion briefly considers the longer-term impact of these developments in the light of the even greater challenges facing the ICRC in the 1920s and beyond.

Abstract:The approaching centenary of the start of World War I and the booming cultural tourism at the former Western Front in Belgium, combined with recent urbanisation and agricultural intensification processes, have promoted the demand for a more effective and sustainable heritage management. In addition, there is need for interdisciplinary research on how war and socio-natural landscapes reciprocally reproduce each other in time and space. The focus of this paper is a WWI defence system in the Province of Antwerp (Belgium), some 100 km to the east of the actual Western frontline. Research included the inventory and evaluation of the remaining above-ground relics of military features in a landscape archaeological perspective, based on WWI aerial photographs, historical maps and fieldwork. Landscape types and dynamics were identified from 1918 to 2011, based on a time series of aerial photos and maps, complemented with fieldwork. Second, an overall vision was formulated for sustainable heritage management of the militarised landscape. Both vision and practical recommendations are immediately useful for policy makers and stakeholders.

Abstract:This article is about the relationship between reading, trauma and responsive literary caregiving in Britain during the First World War. Its analysis of two little-known documents describing the history of the War Library, begun by Helen Mary Gaskell in 1914, exposes a gap in the scholarship of war-time reading; generates a new narrative of "how," "when," and "why" books went to war; and foregrounds gender in its analysis of the historiography. The Library of Congress's T. W. Koch discovered Gaskell's ground-breaking work in 1917 and reported its successes to the American Library Association. The British Times also covered Gaskell's library, yet researchers working on reading during the war have routinely neglected her distinct model and method, skewing the research base on war-time reading and its association with trauma and caregiving. In the article's second half, a literary case study of a popular war novel demonstrates the extent of the "bitter cry for books." The success of Gaskell's intervention is examined alongside H. G. Wells's representation of textual healing. Reading is shown to offer sick, traumatized and recovering combatants emotional and psychological caregiving in ways that she could not always have predicted and that are not visible in the literary/historical record.
