Abstract:Water sampling is a fundamental practice for obtaining essential environmental data, enabling the analysis and quality testing of water from natural or industrial sources. It is vital in understanding water quality changes over time, identifying contaminant sources, and supporting water management plans. Traditional sampling methods, including spot (bottle) sampling and in-situ readings, can be labor-intensive and limited by accessibility. To address these challenges, the utilization of drones has emerged as an innovative approach. Drones offer the potential to automate field quality control and streamline water sampling efforts for data collection in diverse water environments. This paper focuses on the design and development of a water sampling system integrated with a drone, featuring an automatic lock mechanism activated after rigorous field quality control, ensuring the reliable collection of water samples in various scenarios.

Abstract:The rapid development and application of drone technology has included water sampling and collection of physiochemical data from lakes. Previous research has demonstrated the significant potential of drones to play a future pivotal role in the collection of such data from lakes that fulfil requirements of large-scale monitoring programmes. However, currently the utilisation of drone technology for water quality monitoring is hindered by a number of important limitations: i) the low rate of successful sample captured; ii) the relatively low volume of water sample retrieved for analyses of multiple water chemistry parameters; and critically iii) differences between water chemistry parameters when using a drone versus samples collected by boat. Here we present results comparing the water chemistry results of a large number of parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen concentration, temperature, conductivity, alkalinity, hardness, true colour, chloride, silica, ammonia, total oxidised nitrogen, nitrite, nitrate, ortho-phosphate, total phosphorous and chlorophyll) sampled via drone with samples collected by boat in a number of lakes. The drone water sampling method used here is the first to collect a sufficiently large volume of water to meet the monitoring requirements of large scale water monitoring programmes, 2 L, at a 100% success rate and most crucially, with water chemistry variables that are not significantly different to those taken using traditional boat water sampling. This study therefore shows that drone technology can be utilised to collect water chemistry data and samples from lakes in a reliable, more rapid and cost effective manner than traditional sampling using boats, that is safer for personnel and poses less of a biosecurity risk.

Abstract:Abstract Cleaning, applying and testing coatings on corrosion-susceptible surfaces, such as those in Oil & Gas and extreme environments such as offshore Oil & Gas assets, currently requires extensive manual labor. Further, cleaning, coating and measuring coatings at height can create a dangerous occupational environment. Drones, also known as unmanned aerial systems (UAS), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), or small unmanned aerial vehicles (sUAV) can be leveraged to perform some of these tasks, including cleaning, coating, and inspection while keeping workers safely on the ground. Of note are some current aerial robotic inspection platforms in the market that make physical contact with structures for nondestructive testing (NDT) in addition to visual inspection. Drone capabilities have significantly evolved over the past decade, and it is expected that the ubiquity of such systems will continue to increase in the years to come. While no coating or cleaning drone is commercially available at the time of this publication, one company has an existing prototype currently under development as part of a Joint Development Agreement with a large international coatings manufacturer for industrial application that is expected to be tested in industrial environments this year. This prototype is a custom-manufactured drone with a tether to the aircraft from the ground that delivers power and cleaning or coating material. An on-board computer manages flight navigation along with intelligent spraying. While the utilization of this new technology faces many challenges, it is important to recognize the potential and projected growth in use of such systems. An introduction to the current state of coating and cleaning drones will be discussed, along with limitations and benefits the system can provide to the coatings and corrosion control in the Oil & Gas industry.

Abstract:Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is an emergent technology with the potential to drastically change the landscape of many civil and industrial activities in the near future. A promising field of application is the inspection and monitoring of industrial plants, where UAVs can be a valid alternative to traditional approaches with a better cost-effectiveness and a higher safety level. Although the disruptive innovative potential of this technology is generally recognized, a consistent methodological approach towards the evaluation of the drawbacks and benefits of employing UAVs in critical industrial operations can hardly be found in the current scientific literature. In such context, this paper proposes a framework for assessing the effectiveness of UAV technology in industrial monitoring applications within a structured multi-objective framework. In particular, the paper compares the traditional ground-based inspection services of Above Ground Storage Tank (AST) with UAV based inspection, by means of the well-known Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method considering time, cost and safety criteria. A case study is also proposed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach proposed.

Abstract:Abstract Over the past few years ‘Drones’ (or Unmanned Aerial Systems as they are offcially called) have become an accepted part of the inspection ‘toolkit’ in upstream and downstream oil & gas. Yet, at the moment, their application in the oil & gas industry is still largely limited to pure visual inspection of tall structures (e.g., flares, communication towers and offshore jacket structures) or visual surveying of pipelines and construction sites with some occasional use of thermography as well. As drone technology is becoming more and more common, the call to expand their use with other inspection and surveying techniques is also becoming louder. Fortunately, developments are now underway to add capabilities, e.g. (i) ultrasonic thickness gauging (UTG), (ii) ultrasonic defect detection, (iii) detection of hydrocarbon leaks by Optical Gas Imaging (OGI), (iv) internal inspection of membrane LNG cargo tanks, (v) 3D mapping of structures through either LiDAR or photogrammetry, and (iv) ultra long range operations (5 hours flight time and above) to survey unmanned offshore facilities. By definition the oil & gas environment is challenging and high-risk. Thus, to introduce these technologies, it is not sufficient to ‘slap a new probe or sensor on a drone’ or to buy a new, more capable drone and then perform a few proof-of-concept flights for a successful operational introduction. The successful ‘hardening’ of new technologies for drone inspections or surveillance in a real-life operational environment requires the integration of equipment, crew capabilities, procedures and data management. Therefore, for every new step, a full development cycle has to be organised and managed. A bespoke safety case underpins cycle by generating the key elements from which (additional) training as well as operational procedures and data management tools/processes can be developed. Extensive trialing and milestone reviews are part of the process. Only if the young but growing ‘drone services’ industry and asset owners follow such a systematic development approach in a disciplined manner will it be possible to ensure the safety, consistency and quality of ‘drone-based inspections’. Without this, the outcomes will at best be disappointing. This paper presents the first comprehensive description of such an approach. Drone-based ultrasonic inspections are used as a real-life example.

Abstract:Abstract Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology has recently improved in terms of robustness and reliability to be utilized industrially such as site patronage, monitoring and surveillance missions. On the contrary, the delayed development of competent UAV pilots and operators is slowing down operational expansion, resulting in everyday UAV usage costly and unfeasible. The fully automated and completely independent "DroneBox" will act as the drone storage and self-maintenance base for a surveillance operation with no direct human involvement. The drone will be capable of taking- off, performing missions, landing precisely, and recharging automatically while utilizing collected real-time data to perform with the safest configuration through DroneBox. When compared to the industry’s conventional method, the risk, cost, and time of surveillance operation will be reduced with the application of the DroneBox system offshore. According to realistic estimates, deploying the DroneBox system on 20 unmanned wellhead platform platforms can cut operator visits up to one-third of the trips, resulting in saving 22% fuel of crew boat vessels or up to 1.82 million USD operating cost in Artit (ART) and Great Bongkot North (GBN) wellhead platforms.

Abstract:With the rapid technological development of robust and intelligent UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), typically referred to as drones, much opportunities have emerged to provide DraaS (Drone-as-a-Service) to help industries such as agriculture, energy and utilities, GIS, package delivery, cinematography, industrial inspection and many more. The capability of drones to lift payload, acquire data with camera and sensors mounted on it make drones as a useful tool for various commercial applications. However, there exist great challenges for executing autonomous missions, operations, management, ensuring safety and secure communications. In this research paper, we review the latest research in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain applied for DraaS. Blockchain being a distributed ledger protects the shared data using cryptography techniques such as hash functions and public key encryption. It can also be used for assuring the truthfulness of the information stored and for improving the security and transparency of the UAVs. The integration of AI contributes more intelligence to the system enabling informed decision making and eventually converting drones into vehicles capable of executing autonomous missions in the real-world.

Abstract:Water sensing and sampling is a complex application that can benefit from the use of aerial drones. In the monitoring of an aquatic environment, inspection of its physical, chemical, and biological states are equally important. In most cases, only the physical and chemical properties are investigated due to lack of portable sensor packages capable of in situ measurements of biological indicators. Additionally, biological sample collection for ex situ analysis poses certain challenges which requires specialized sample collection methods. For acquiring a good sample, remote sensing needs to work hand in hand with the sampling mechanism to capture the correct analyte of interest. This work presents the design and development of an aerial drone equipped with a custom-made sensor package and sampling mechanism, for sensing and non-destructive sampling of dissolved organic matter in aquatic environments. The developed system is experimentally validated in an outdoor setting and is shown to be capable for in situ measurements of fluorescent content of water bodies and sensor-triggered sample collection.

Abstract:Abstract: The project aims to produce a novel drone that can move underwater with remote control and communicate with the server on its own drones make it possible to explore far-offlocations that are not accessible by foot. However, it is difficult to determine various parameters of water due to insufficient tools and access. Combining a camera and sensors gives a spatial understanding of water. However such kinds of designsare complex due to the presence of different sensors and the capability of drones to function all of them while carrying them in water. We introduce a novel drone technology system for cleaning, exploration, and water quality monitoring in this research.The drone can sample and analyze water, showing real-time images, pH value, and TDS value, and checking ifthe water is turbid. The drone is controlled by wireless Bluetooth technology which helps to establish contact with the drone underwater. Arduino UNO is used to make sensors, andthe values obtained from the gathered data are displayed on the mobile screen.

Abstract:Unmanned Systems, Ahead of Print. The AquaFly project is a research collaboration between the Flight Systems and Control (FSC) Laboratory at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS) and Queen's University Biology Department in Canada to offer a fast, reliable, and efficient method of sampling water bodies by using autonomous Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). To this end, two UAS are custom-designed and flown for autonomous water sampling, incorporating an octocopter configuration and a ratchet and pawl mechanism for retracting and releasing payloads. This design offers easy-to-use and safe deployment and retraction without continuous motor engagement while eliminating load swinging and the risk of instability by positioning the sampler close to the drone's center of mass. Furthermore, the system enables autonomous water sampling in remote or inaccessible areas with pre-programmed flight paths and sampling locations, ensuring consistent data collection. The sampling mechanism allows controlled retrieval and release of payloads and further facilitates multi-drone operations to support a variety of sampling missions. This innovative UAS has the potential to revolutionize water sampling and enhance efficiency and safety in environmental monitoring, research, and resource management. Flight tests over several water bodies demonstrate successful simultaneous water sampling missions with two UAS. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first work to include multiple UAS, each equipped with a payload deployment and retraction mechanism, for autonomous water sampling.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles, more often known as "drones," are a trending technology that will likely have widespread practical uses and significance in the near future, especially for the perceptions of conventional mapping and land cover change in secluded and remote areas. The most difficult aspect of using drones is lifting bigger payloads, which necessitates the selection of appropriate multi-rotor drones as well as systematic design optimization. Future technologies like drones have great promise for addressing societal issues, but they have not yet been studied to their fullest potential. In addition to numerous multi-rotor drones, hexacopter and octocopter have a greater capacity to lift big payloads. Computer-aided design and Finite-element-analysis (FEA) is a valuable approach for analyzing reliability, and it helps to determine the specifications of the motor and propeller for specified payload. This paper describes the design and FEA simulation of the hexacopter drone frame and 3D-printed bottle hanger. The Factor-of-safety may characterize by comparing the yield-strength of the materials with the developed von-mises-stresses in both components. The number of best-fit loads for each is obvious in order to maximise payload carrying capacity. FEA simulation envisages that the ~ 7500 g and ~ 1500 g are the maximum payloads for the hexacopter drone frame and bottle hanger, respectively with the required theoretical thrust of ~ 3.3 kg. Comparing the FEA results with the required theoretical thrust to lift the payload will render the design of a hexacopter drone for an optimized payload. In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrate that drone technology can be used for collecting water samples from lakes in a faster, reliable, and more cost-effective manner than out-dated sampling by means of boats.

Abstract:An integrated automated air‐delivery solar driven onsite water monitoring & treatment system for efficient and sustainable treatment of natural water sources is developed. The system consists of the Internet of Things‐based real‐time and continuous water monitoring unit and the bioadsorbent silk fibroin film‐based sustainable water purification unit. The dispatch and maintenance of the system is carried out by unmanned aerial vehicles. Treating potential polluted water sources is urgent and challenging, especially for natural water sources. Numerous research groups focus on either smart water monitoring or new adsorbent. However, either aspect alone is insufficient for complex nature water source treatment. Here, integrating the state‐of‐art machine learning technique, a sustainable silk‐based bioadsorbent, and wireless Internet of Things, an integrated automated drone‐delivery solar driven onsite water monitoring & treatment system (WMTS) for the contaminated nature water sources is developed. In short, the embedded sensors and microprogrammed control unit capture and upload the real‐time monitoring data to the cloud server for data analysis and optimized treatment strategy. Meanwhile, a grid map system based on the satellite remote sensing images directs the minimum number of WMTS units to cover the entire polluted region. Finally, unmanned aerial vehicles provide autonomous dispatch, operation, and maintenance, especially in hard‐to‐reach sites. Overall, this work offers a general, sustainable, energy‐efficient, and closed‐loop solution toward efficiently alerting and on‐site treating nature water source contamination.

Abstract:Deteriorating water quality poses significant health risks globally, with billions at risk of waterborne diseases due to contamination. Limited data on water quality heightens these risks as conventional monitoring methods lack comprehensive coverage. While technologies like Internet of Things and machine learning offer real-time monitoring capabilities, they often provide point data insufficient for assessing entire water bodies. Remote sensing, though useful, has limitations such as measuring only optical parameters and being affected by climate and resolution issues. To address these challenges, an unmanned surface vehicle named 'AquaDrone' has been developed. AquaDrone traverses water bodies, collecting data on four key parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, and temperature) along with GPS coordinates. These data are transmitted to a web portal via LoRa communication and Wi-Fi, where visualizations like trendlines and color-coded heatmaps are generated. A multilayer perceptron classifies water quality into five categories, aiding in real-time assessment. The AquaDrone system offers a feasible solution for monitoring small to medium-sized water bodies, crucial for safeguarding public health.

Abstract:Taking measurements for agriculture purposes is a challenge that this project tackles. A UAV and some sensors are being used to monitor a big field. The target of this project is to design a fully autonomous system that covers the area of planted land. The system collects information and sends what is collected directly to the base station. Furthermore, the design is divided into two parts: plane design and ground design. The plane design includes a temperature sensor, a CO2 sensor, a NoIR camera, a regular camera and a 4G dongle. The ground design, however, has one soil moisture sensor, one H2S sensor and a GSM module. The plane takes a trip around the field to record real time data and transmits, while the on-ground black box sends data to the base station. Finally, data is analysed, and reports are sent to the base station and the mobile application created for this cause. The plane has carried tests in the airport in Al-Khor city. The tests were to make sure the UAV flies properly and they were successful.

Abstract:The rapid urbanization and increasing vehicle traffic in metropolitan areas have given rise to a significant challenges in traffic management. Traditional methods of a traffic monitoring and control often struggle to cope with the dynamic and complex nature of urban traffic patterns. In this context, we propose an innovative Drone Surveillance System for Traffic Management to revolutionize the way traffic is monitored, analyzed, and optimized in urban environments. Our system leverages state-of-the-art drone technology equipped with advanced sensors, high-resolution cameras, and intelligent algorithms to provide real-time traffic insights. Drones are deployed strategically across key traffic arteries, allowing for comprehensive aerial coverage and data collection. The system focuses on several key objectives: real-time traffic monitoring, incident detection, traffic flow analysis, optimized traffic signal control, emergency response support, data-driven decision making, and ensuring privacy and security compliance. By the employing cutting-edge computer vision algorithms, machine learning techniques, and data analytics, the Drone Surveillance System processes vast amounts of traffic data with speed and precision. The system detects the traffic incidents and the such as accidents and road hazards promptly, enabling swift a responses from emergency services. It analyzes traffic patterns and predicts congestion, allowing for adaptive traffic signal control and dynamic route optimization, thereby minimizing congestion and reducing travel time for a commuters. One of the system’s notable features is its a ability to the support emergency response teams effectively. Abstract:Third dimension’s exploitation facilitates a rapid and timely use of aerospace power. This is because, when using the airspace, free of significant obstacles; it is possible to operate with a greater degree of action. Aware of this reality, the current technology seeks to operate flight equipment autonomously and thus, obtain a greater advantage in time, space and financial resources. Aerial devices such as drones help to ground structures to have a better vision of their environment, with greater range and without the use of significant efforts. In this article, authors propose the use of an automated drone for the execution of aerial guard rounds at various military posts in a specific aerial base. This drone will be monitored by a mobile application manipulated by the guard-duty. The main goal of this research is to cover an area of military responsibility where exists aeronautical resources that need physical security, regardless of their geographical conditions, optimizing human, financial and time resources.

Abstract:Abstract: Now, fighting a fire in rugged mountain terrains or high building windows fire is difficult and dangerous for firefighters. High buildings containing floors at height, and reaching the position for deployment of external firefighting equipment and rescue operations may not be easy it takes some time, and fire will spread easily during that period. Meanwhile reaching farms located in rugged mountains, and terrains with firefighting vehicles are often impossible because of rugged road conditions and traffic. From this perspective view, to meet the need for a fast way to extinguish the fire in an area to be approached by using drone technology and to give safety for the public and firefighters. The fire extinguishing technique is detailed in this paper. The system is structured with six frames. Hexacopter (with release mechanism), Fire extinguishing ball, collision avoidance system. Hexacopter will carry a specific payload and be capable of throwing an extinguishing in an area that is chosen by the operator. This system has been implemented, constructed, and tested in a practical session. The results demonstrate the feasibility of drones in extinguishing fire in its initial stages, dropping a CO2 ball, and can fly back to firefighters for the next round.
