Emergent Materials
Abstract:Copper oxide (Cu2O) has emerged as a promising photocatalytic material, yet its full potential is hindered by inherent optical and electronic limitations. In this study, we explore the enhancement of Cu2O’s photocatalytic activity through ternary copper (I) oxide material with titanium (Ti), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Ternary compounds of Cu2O with Ti, Zn, and Fe present a broad spectrum of properties that can be tailored for specific applications. Our DFT approach allows for a detailed investigation of the electronic structure, optical properties, and charge carrier dynamics of these ternary copper (I) oxide material systems. We reveal that Ti, Zn, and Fe based ternary copper (I) oxide induce significant changes in the electronic structure, resulting in reduced band gaps and enhanced utilization of visible light for photocatalytic reactions. Furthermore, some ternary Cu2O compounds exhibit more negative energy levels, suggesting potential for water splitting, and a capability absent in pure Cu2O. These enhancements in photocatalytic activity are attributed to the ternary copper (I) oxide elements and structural alterations within the Cu2O lattice. Our findings provide valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying the enhancement of Cu2O’s photocatalytic potential through altering the ternary element with Ti, Zn, and Fe, paving the way for the rational design and optimization of photocatalytic materials for diverse applications.
