ANXIETY RELIEF THROUGH COGNITIVE TRAINING: INSIGHTS FROM A SHORT-TERM INTERVENTION STUDY

Abstract:Background & Purpose: Anxiety is an uncontrollable disposition to worry about one's welfare & includes manifestations like arousal, tension, disturbed sleep, irritability. Cognitive training is a process of brain remediation through learned practice. Anxiety has developed among young adults in the recent times owing to the social pressures they are subjected to. The purpose of this study was to nd out if application of cognitive training for a short duration reduces the anxiety in healthy individuals. Methods: 32 healthy subjects randomly allocated into two groups ;experimental and control. underwent baseline measurements with anxiety assessment scales & Ruler drop test. Group 1 was given cognitive training twice daily for 1 week. Group 2 was given 15 minutes of meditation training twice daily for 1 week. After the treatment, both groups were tested with the GAD7, HMARS & Ruler drop test used during baseline measurements. Results: After 1 week of cognitive training group 1 showed signicant reduction in anxiety scores in GAD7 from 13.31±4.8 to 3.63±3.5 , HMARS scores from 15.6±11.6 to 7.94±9.2 & ruler drop test scores from 12.8±1.3 to 2.88±0.7. Conclusion: Short term cognitive training is found to reduce anxiety in healthy subjects.
