Abstract:Generative artificial intelligence (AI), including large language models (LLMs), is poised to transform scientific research, enabling researchers to elevate their research productivity. This article presents a how-to guide for employing LLMs in academic settings, focusing on their unique strengths, constraints and implications through the lens of philosophy of science and epistemology. Using ChatGPT as a case study, I identify and elaborate on three attributes contributing to its effectiveness—intelligence, versatility and collaboration—accompanied by tips on crafting effective prompts, practical use cases and a living resource online (https://osf.io/8vpwu/). Next, I evaluate the limitations of generative AI and its implications for ethical use, equality and education. Regarding ethical and responsible use, I argue from technical and epistemic standpoints that there is no need to restrict the scope or nature of AI assistance, provided that its use is transparently disclosed. A pressing challenge, however, lies in detecting fake research, which can be mitigated by embracing open science practices, such as transparent peer review and sharing data, code and materials. Addressing equality, I contend that while generative AI may promote equality for some, it may simultaneously exacerbate disparities for others—an issue with potentially significant yet unclear ramifications as it unfolds. Lastly, I consider the implications for education, advocating for active engagement with LLMs and cultivating students' critical thinking and analytical skills. The how-to guide seeks to empower researchers with the knowledge and resources necessary to effectively harness generative AI while navigating the complex ethical dilemmas intrinsic to its application.

Abstract:This article explores the role of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) in enhancing information retrieval and knowledge discovery in libraries by analyzing the significant advantages GAI offers. Its aim is on expanding the understanding of the potentials of GAI and how it reshapes information retrieval, accessibility and Knowledge discovery in academic libraries in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. The research adopted a mixed-method approach; Systematic review and longitudinal approaches as its methodologies. It posited the role of GAI in enhancing information retrieval and knowledge discovery in academic libraries in aspects like collection development and management, cataloging and classification, Indexing, library data analysis and unique search engines. The paper also identified some challenges limiting the usage GAI in academic libraries like GAI’s potential for inaccuracies, staff training and development, rigid educational structures and human relations and emotive connections. By way of conclusion and recommendation, the researchers suggested that academic libraries should intensify investments in training and re-training of staff because professional technological development for staff will ensure effective management and use of AI technologies.

Abstract:Current knowledge and research on students' utilization and interaction with generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in their academic work is limited. This study aims to investigate students' engagement with these tools. This research used survey-based research to investigate generative AI literacy (utilization, interaction, evaluation of output and ethics) among students enrolled in a four-year public university in the southeastern USA. This article focuses on the respondents who have used generative AI (218; 47.2%). Most respondents used generative AI to generate ideas for papers, projects or assignments, and they also used AI to assist with their original ideas. Despite their use of AI assistance, most students were critical of generative AI output, and this mindset was reflected in their reported interactions with ChatGPT. Respondents expressed a need for explicit guidance from course syllabi and university policies regarding generative AI's ethical and appropriate use. Literature related to generative AI use in higher education specific to ChatGPT is predominantly from educators' viewpoints. This study provides empirical evidence about how university students report using generative AI in the context of generative AI literacy.

Abstract:Objectives – To understand how many undergraduate and graduate students use generative AI as part of their academic work, how often they use it, and for what tasks they use it. We also sought to identify how trustworthy students find generative AI and how they would feel about a locally maintained generative AI tool. Finally, we explored student interest in trainings related to using generative AI in academic work. This survey will help librarians better understand the rate at which generative AI is being adopted by university students and the need for librarians to incorporate generative AI into their work. Methods – A team of three library staff members and one student intern created, executed, and analyzed a survey of 360 undergraduate and graduate students at Harvard University. The survey was distributed via email lists and at cafes and libraries throughout campus. Data were collected and analyzed using Qualtrics. Results – We found that nearly 65% of respondents have used or plan to use generative AI chatbots for academic work, even though most respondents (65%) do not find their outputs trustworthy enough for academic work. The findings show that students actively use these tools but desire guidance around effectively using them. Conclusion – This research shows students are engaging with generative AI for academic work but do not fully trust the information that it produces. Librarians must be at the forefront of understanding the significant impact this technology will have on information-seeking behaviors and research habits. To effectively support students, librarians must know how to use these tools to advise students on how to critically evaluate AI output and effectively incorporate it into their research.

Abstract:This article is an account of a social work academic’s first engagement with generative Artificial Intelligence (AI). The aim is to introduce this emerging and fast-growing technology to the social work community in order to promote a dialogue about its potential use for learning in social work practice learning placements. Examples are included to stimulate ideas and motivate educators to use generative AI for teaching and learning. The case is made that students and educators need to understand how to use AI responsibly and skilfully to be agile and equipped for the workplace of the future. Although AI can be useful, it has limitations and cannot replace human interaction which is a fundamental aspect of social work education in the workplace.

Abstract:This paper aims to comprehensively examine the multifaceted role of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) within academic settings, exploring its diverse applications, opportunities, and challenges. Employing a systematic review approach, this study synthesizes and analyzes the existing literature pertaining to the integration of AI in academia. It critically evaluates the varied applications of generative AI tools across different domains such as literature review, visualization, content generation, plagiarism detection, language enhancement, data analysis, and journal selection. The examination reveals a myriad of advantages brought forth by generative AI applications, including a substantial reduction in researchers' workloads, time-saving mechanisms, the extraction of valuable insights from extensive datasets, and an overall enhancement in the quality of scholarly outputs. However, alongside these benefits, several challenges and limitations emerge. These include concerns regarding accuracy and reliability, ethical implications, limitations in linguistic and contextual understanding, potential hindrance to critical thinking and creativity, issues with data visualization, training requirements, staying updated with recent research, and the complexity and costs associated with specialized training. This paper provides a comprehensive and structured overview of the applications, advantages, and challenges of utilizing generative AI in academic settings. It synthesizes existing knowledge, critically evaluates the implications, and highlights the need for a balanced approach to harness the full potential of AI while mitigating ethical and practical challenges. The paper's contribution lies in offering a holistic view of AI's impact on academia, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts among stakeholders to maximize benefits while ensuring ethical standards and academic integrity.
On the Use of Generative AI for Literature Reviews: An Exploration of Tools and Techniques

Abstract:To carry out a literature review often involves hard and tedious work. There is a tradition of using facilitating tools, that extended to the AI field in 2018 when iris.ai appeared. Today, in the emerging field of Generative AI tools based on Large Language Models, there has been rapid development of new literature search tools and approaches. This study has the aim of exploring this vast array of Generative AI tools, in a literature study where some of the found tools were used to facilitate the selection of relevant publication. Three research questions guided this study: RQ1) "What Generative AI tools can be found in literature?", RQ2) "Which of these tools could be of use in the literature review conducted in this study, and how?", and RQ3) "What are the ethical aspects of using Generative AI tools in literature studies?” The approach has been a scoping review, built around a search that combined the keywords: "AI supported", "AI generated", "AI based" and "Literature review". An initial result set was filtered with inclusion exclusion criteria in a strive for an interesting quality answer to the research questions. However, most publications that passed the filtering lacked any potential to contribute to answer the research questions. The most interesting finding in the first search was a hint about the new feature 'Scopus AI'. A new search with the Scopus AI tool resulted in a small but very relevant set of publications. These publications were analysed in a deductive inductive thematic analysis, and primary sorted into the categories of: 'Generative AI Tools', 'Supportive AI Techniques', and 'Ethical Issues'. Findings indicate that there is a wide variety of tools that can facilitate the skimming process of a literature, and to provide adequate summaries of retrieved publication. However, authors recommendation is to keep the tools on the facilitating support level, and that the main analysis and conclusion should be human conducted. With this, rather traditional approach, researchers will have clearly less ethical issues to consider. Finally, the ethical aspects of Generative AI tools in research ought to be investigated more in detail, in a separate future study.

Abstract:The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) poses challenges as well as opportunities for anyone or anything dealing with digital technologies, including libraries. Libraries and librarians have a twofold challenge in that they simultaneously must consider AI applications in library operations as well as AI skills and knowledge as part of the information literacy (IL) training they provide for their users, whether it be in IL programmes or informal learning contexts. This study follows a learning circle in which 123 librarians in Sweden did a pre-existing online course about AI and met up at regular intervals to discuss its contents in a library perspective. The increased knowledge about AI and libraries and the confidence to pass on this knowledge to library users is measured through a self-efficacy test conducted on three separate occasions during the learning circle. The result from the test shows an increase in AI knowledge during the learning circle, although the small sample makes it difficult to draw definitive conclusions. A focus group from the learning circle was interviewed to get an in-depth understanding of librarians’ core topics of concern and excitement regarding AI and libraries. The results from the interview showed that there was a mainly positive view of AI in relation to making library collections more accessible and easier to manage, while there was more concern regarding AI’s impact on the media landscape and how this could impact library users. Introspectively, the focus group perceived challenges in including AI when teaching IL to users as well as in the lack of AI skills among colleagues that could make it difficult to apply or discuss AI in relation to the workplace and the library profession. This paper presents a method of increasing AI knowledge among librarians and library staff. It highlights topics relevant for several library types when faced with the development and application of AI in libraries and in society that based on the results of the study are difficult to escape. The insights may prove useful when planning educational endeavours and when considering library development and strategy related to AI and their implications for libraries and library users.

Abstract:The debate surrounding the permissibility of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in legal education has garnered widespread attention. However, this discourse has largely oscillated between the advantages and disadvantages of generative AI usage whilst failing to fully consider how the uptake of these tools relates to the fundamental objectives of legal education. This article contributes to the current debate by positing that since the primary aim of legal education is the preparation of legal professionals and the development of legal research, generative AI must be holistically integrated into the dominant approaches to legal teaching. This stems from the fact that the legal profession will increasingly rely on generative AI in its daily work. Therefore, AI literacy will emerge as a critical professional skill in the legal realm. Against this background, this article further argues that the integration of AI into the legal curriculum should be addressed by diversifying assessment strategies, emphasizing the importance of academic integrity and making resources on the ethical use of AI available to both students and academic staff in law schools.

Abstract:Academic writing is an indispensable yet laborious part of the research enterprise. This Perspective maps out principles and methods for using generative artificial intelligence (AI), specifically large language models (LLMs), to elevate the quality and efficiency of academic writing. We introduce a human-AI collaborative framework that delineates the rationale (why), process (how), and nature (what) of AI engagement in writing. The framework pinpoints both short-term and long-term reasons for engagement and their underlying mechanisms (e.g., cognitive offloading and imaginative stimulation). It reveals the role of AI throughout the writing process, conceptualized through a two-stage model for human-AI collaborative writing, and the nature of AI assistance in writing, represented through a model of writing-assistance types and levels. Building on this framework, we describe effective prompting techniques for incorporating AI into the writing routine (outlining, drafting, and editing) as well as strategies for maintaining rigorous scholarship, adhering to varied journal policies, and avoiding overreliance on AI. Ultimately, the prudent integration of AI into academic writing can ease the communication burden, empower authors, accelerate discovery, and promote diversity in science.

Abstract:Over 2023, many universities and policy organisations in the higher education (HE) sector are working to create guiding principles and guidelines for the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in HE Teaching and Learning (T&L). Despite these guidelines, students remain unsure if and how they should use AI. This article discusses the AI information sessions held over the Autumn 2023 term in the Department of Classics at the University of Reading, which aimed to provide students with the knowledge and tools to make informed judgements about using AI in their studies. These sessions discussed the benefits and drawbacks of generative AI, highlighting training data, content policy, environmental impact, and examples of potential uses. Staff and student participants were surveyed before and after these information sessions to gather their opinions surrounding AI use. Although at least 60% of participants had previously used generative AI, 80% of participants were apprehensive of or against using generative AI tools for learning purposes following the AI information sessions. By providing staff and students with the ethical considerations surrounding generative AI, they can make an informed judgement about using AI in their work without misplaced faith or excessive fear.

Abstract:Teaching of Psychology, Ahead of Print. BackgroundWith the arrival of generative artificial intelligence (genAI) tools, psychology educators are rethinking their assessment practices.ObjectiveThis paper describes one approach to integrating genAI into an assessment designed to promote psychological literacy.MethodStudents used ChatGPT to generate a media release about a published article and then wrote a critique. We evaluated whether students were able to use the marking rubric to assess the ChatGPT output, and whether working with the rubric early in the assessment process had benefits for their grades on subsequent tasks.ResultsThe results show that students accurately assessed the ChatGPT output against the marking rubric, judging the output to be stylistically good but lacking in accurate coverage of the aims, methods, and results of the research. Working with genAI and the marking rubric early in the assessment process had benefits for performance, relative to cohorts that had engaged in peer review.ConclusionBy allowing students to use genAI and scaffolding the process of critiquing and revising, students gained competencies in psychological, feedback, and AI literacies.Teaching implicationsIntegrating genAI presents opportunities for learning, if educators can think beyond the artifact and design assessment that allows our students to showcase their learning process.

Abstract:Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is transforming education, and faculty can either incorporate GenAI in intentional course design to promote inquiry-based learning (IBL) or resist its use. This study identified an effective strategy to intentionally integrate GenAI in the course design to promote IBL. A descriptive study design was used for graduate nursing students to compare the effectiveness of a GenAI literature search tool, Elicit: The AI Research Assistant, to PubMed and CINAHL. A two-phase framework was utilized to organize complex information and justify a preference. A rubric was designed to promote and assess critical thinking through IBL in educating graduate nursing students on information literacy and structuring a literature search. Discovering a relationship between the search tools, students identified the strengths (pros) and weaknesses (cons) of each tool and determined which tool was more effective in terms of accuracy, relevance and efficiency.

Abstract:In the field of higher education, generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has become a revolutionary influence, shaping how students access and use library resources. This study explores the intricate balance of both positive and negative effects that GenAI might have on the academic library experience for higher education (HE) students. The key aspects of enhanced discovery and retrieval, personalization and engagement, streamlined research processes, and digital literacy and information evaluation potentially offered through using generative AI will be considered. These prospective advantages to HE students offered by using GenAI will be examined through will be examined through the theoretical framework of the Technological Acceptance Model (TAM) introduced by Davis et al. in 1986, which suggests that perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use are key factors in determining user acceptance and utilization of technology. The adoption of GenAI by higher education students will be analyzed from this viewpoint before assessing its impact on their use of library resources.

Abstract:The advancements in Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) provide opportunities to enrich educational experiences, but also raise concerns about academic integrity. Many educators have expressed anxiety and hesitation in integrating GenAI in their teaching practices, and are in needs of recommendations and guidance from their institutions that can support them to incorporate GenAI in their classrooms effectively. In order to respond to higher educators' needs, this study aims to explore how universities and educators respond and adapt to the development of GenAI in their academic contexts by analyzing academic policies and guidelines established by top-ranked U.S. universities regarding the use of GenAI, especially ChatGPT. Data sources include academic policies, statements, guidelines, and relevant resources provided by the top 100 universities in the U.S. Results show that the majority of these universities adopt an open but cautious approach towards GenAI. Primary concerns lie in ethical usage, accuracy, and data privacy. Most universities actively respond and provide diverse types of resources, such as syllabus templates, workshops, shared articles, and one-on-one consultations focusing on a range of topics: general technical introduction, ethical concerns, pedagogical applications, preventive strategies, data privacy, limitations, and detective tools. The findings provide four practical pedagogical implications for educators in teaching practices: accept its presence, align its use with learning objectives, evolve curriculum to prevent misuse, and adopt multifaceted evaluation strategies rather than relying on AI detectors. Two recommendations are suggested for educators in policy making: establish discipline-specific policies and guidelines, and manage sensitive information carefully.

Abstract:With the enormous growth in interest and use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems seen since the launch of ChatGPT in autumn 2022 have come questions both about the legal status of AI outputs, and of using protected works as training inputs. It is inevitable that UK higher education institution (HEI) library copyright advice services will see an increase in questions around use of works with AI as a result. Staff working in such library services are not lawyers or able to offer legal advice to their academic researchers. Nonetheless, they must look at the issues raised, consider how to advise in analogous situations of using copyright material, and offer opinion to researchers accordingly. While the legal questions remain to be answered definitively, copyright librarians can still offer advice on both open licences and use of copyright material under permitted exceptions. We look here at how library services can address questions on copyright and open licences for generative AI for researchers in UK HEIs.
Innovating Computer Programming Pedagogy: The AI-Lab Framework for Generative AI Adoption

Abstract:Over the last year, the ascent of Generative AI (GenAI) has raised concerns about its impact on core skill development, such as problem-solving and algorithmic thinking, in Computer Science students. Preliminary anonymous surveys show that at least 48.5% of our students use GenAI for homework. With the proliferation of these tools, the academic community must contemplate the appropriate role of these tools in education. Neglecting this might culminate in a phenomenon we term the "Junior-Year Wall," where students struggle in advanced courses due to prior over-dependence on GenAI. Instead of discouraging GenAI use, which may unintentionally foster covert usage, our research seeks to answer: "How can educators guide students' interactions with GenAI to preserve core skill development during their foundational academic years?" We introduce "AI-Lab," a pedagogical framework for guiding students in effectively leveraging GenAI within core collegiate programming courses. This framework accentuates GenAI's benefits and potential as a pedagogical instrument. By identifying and rectifying GenAI's errors, students enrich their learning process. Moreover, AI-Lab presents opportunities to use GenAI for tailored support such as topic introductions, detailed examples, corner case identification, rephrased explanations, and debugging assistance. Importantly, the framework highlights the risks of GenAI over-dependence, aiming to intrinsically motivate students towards balanced usage. This approach is premised on the idea that mere warnings of GenAI's potential failures may be misconstrued as instructional shortcomings rather than genuine tool limitations. Additionally, AI-Lab offers strategies for formulating prompts to elicit high-quality GenAI responses. For educators, AI-Lab provides mechanisms to explore students' perceptions of GenAI's role in their learning experience.

Abstract:Management Learning, Ahead of Print. In this editorial, we identify some of the opportunities and the consequences of generative artificial intelligence for academia. We discuss how generative artificial intelligence will affect the three main areas of an academic's job responsibilities: research, teaching and service. To animate our ideas, we offer illustrative examples of how generative artificial intelligence will impact each of these areas. Further recognizing that generative artificial intelligence poses both opportunities and consequences for academia from a management learning perspective, we use examples that represent a positive and a negative outcome resultant of generative artificial intelligence to each of the three areas of academic responsibility.

Abstract:This study examines the impact of artificial-intelligence-generated content tools on students’ critical thinking skills and their attitudes towards these tools. A survey of 851 students from a Chinese university was conducted to investigate their usage patterns, motivations, perceived benefits and risk awareness, and the importance of critical thinking skills. The study also explores how libraries and librarians can help students develop critical thinking skills. The findings reveal that male and non-binary students utilized artificial intelligence tools more frequently, highlighting a research gap. The study uncovers motivations such as saving time and effort. It also demonstrates students’ awareness of the risks and limitations, emphasizing the need for critical thinking skills in navigating artificial-intelligence-generated content tools. These findings have significant implications for academic libraries, as students expressed a desire for education and training in artificial intelligence literacy and critical thinking. Libraries can provide resources, workshops and guidance to empower students in informed and critical thinking practices.

This study does not involve testing available LLMs or selecting the most suitable tool; instead, it targets information professionals, specialists, librarians, and scientists, aiming to inspire them in various ways. Within this paper, we explore both well-known and less recognized use cases of generative AI tools, which may prove relevant not only for the target group of information specialists but also for other users. Our analysis demonstrates that apart from merely summarizing or expanding existing textual content, these AI tools hold the potential for performing non-standard yet sophisticated tasks with electronic information resources. They can facilitate interactive engagement with these resources, aid in the extraction and composition of descriptive metadata, indexing, and even possible classification. Nevertheless, it is essential to acknowledge the numerous limitations of current LLMs, which we acknowledge in this study.
