Abstract:A novel and practical chiral ruthenium NHC-diamine system is disclosed for the enantioselective hydrogenation of isocoumarins, which provides a new concept to apply (chiral) NHC ligands in asymmetric catalysis. Abstract:Ruthenium-based catalysts were prepared by a biogenic method via Cacumen Platycladi leaf extract and tested in the liquid phase hydrogenation of maleic anhydride to the corresponding succinic anhydride. The reaction conditions were optimized by varying the Ru loading, reaction temperature, hydrogen pressure, reaction time and organic solvents to achieve the superb catalytic performance. Reusability tests and comparison with commercial catalysts were also studied on the biosynthesized Ru-based catalysts. Furthermore, a variety of characterization techniques, such as TEM, HRTEM, EDS and XPS showed the effectively introduction of ruthenium nanoparticles into the carbon supports. The analyses of FTIR and TG confirmed that the plant extract served as both reducing and protecting agents.. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A modular synthesis of Ru(II)-NHC-diamine complexes from readily available chiral N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and chiral diamines is disclosed for the first time. The well-defined Ru(II)-NHC-diamine complexes show unique structure and coordination chemistry including an unusual tridentate coordination effect of 1,2-diphenylethylenediamine. The isolated air- and moisture-stable Ru(II)-NHC-diamine complexes act as versatile precatalysts for the asymmetric hydrogenation of isocoumarines, benzothiophene 1,1-dioxides, and ketones. Moreover, on the basis of the identification of reaction intermediates by stoichiometric reactions and NMR experiments, together with the DFT calculations, a possible catalytic cycle was proposed.
Ligand Oxidation Activates a Ruthenium(II) Precatalyst for C-H Hydroxylation

Abstract:A new class of Ru-sulfonamidate precatalysts for sp3 C-H hydroxylation is described along with a versatile process for assembling unique heteroleptic Ru(II) complexes. The latter has enabled structure-performance studies to identify an optimal precatalyst, 2h, bearing one 4,4'-di-tert-butylbipyridine (dtbpy) and one pyridylsulfonamidate ligand. Single-crystal X-ray analysis confirmed the structure and stereochemistry of this adduct. Catalytic hydroxylation reactions are conveniently performed in an aqueous, biphasic solvent mixture with 1 mol % 2h and ceric ammonium nitrate as the terminal oxidant and deliver oxidized products in yields ranging from 37 to 90%. A comparative mechanistic investigation of 2h against a related homoleptic precatalyst, [Ru(dtbpy)2(MeCN)2](OTf)2, convincingly establishes that the former generates one or more surprisingly long-lived active species under the reaction conditions, thus accounting for the high turnover numbers. Structure-performance, kinetics, mass spectrometric, and electrochemical analyses reveal that ligand oxidation is a prerequisite for catalyst activation. Our findings sharply contrast a large body of prior art showing that ligand oxidation is detrimental to catalyst function. We expect these results to stimulate future innovations in C-H oxidation research.

Abstract:Although α-chiral C( sp 3 )–S bonds are of enormous importance in organic synthesis and related areas, the transition-metal-catalysed enantioselective C( sp 3 )–S bond construction still represents an underdeveloped domain probably due to the difficult heterolytic metal–sulfur bond cleavage and notorious catalyst-poisoning capability of sulfur nucleophiles. Here we demonstrate the use of chiral tridentate anionic ligands in combination with Cu(I) catalysts to enable a biomimetic enantioconvergent radical C( sp 3 )–S cross-coupling reaction of both racemic secondary and tertiary alkyl halides with highly transformable sulfur nucleophiles. This protocol not only exhibits a broad substrate scope with high enantioselectivity but also provides universal access to a range of useful α-chiral alkyl organosulfur compounds with different sulfur oxidation states, thus providing a complementary approach to known asymmetric C( sp 3 )–S bond formation methods. Mechanistic results support a biomimetic radical homolytic substitution pathway for the critical C( sp 3 )–S bond formation step.

Abstract:A chiral ruthenium catalyst was developed for the enantioselective sulfoxidation of the title compounds. The catalyst combines two elements of chirality, a chiral pybox ligand and a chiral bicylic lactam unit, to which the ligand is attached. The latter unit was shown to improve significantly the performance of the catalyst by exposing one of the two enantiotopic sulfur atoms to the active site via hydrogen-bond mediated coordination. Ten differently substituted substrates were converted into the respective sulfoxides in yields of 52-71 % and with ≥90 % ee.

Abstract:This report describes the Ru(II)-catalyzed C-H allylation of N,N-dialkyl thiobenzamides with allyl carbonate. The reaction is carried out using [RuCl2(p-cym)]2 in the presence of Cu(OAc)2 and Ag2O. This method represents the first example of Ru-catalyzed C-H allylation directed by sulfur-containing groups. As a further advantage, the method is performed in sustainable and eco-friendly MeCN as a solvent.

Abstract:Reaction of [Ru(dmso) 4 Cl 2 ] with potassium salt of four xanthate (RO-C(=S)S - ; R = Me, Et, i Pr and t Bu) ligands (depicted as L n ; n = 1 - 4) in hot methanol afforded a group of mixed-ligand complexes of type [Ru(L n ) 2 (dmso) 2 ]. Crystal structures of all the four complexes have been determined, which show that the xanthate ligands are bound to the metal center forming four-membered chelates and, the dmso's are coordinated through sulfur and they are mutually cis . Relative thermodynamic stability of this cis and the other possible trans isomers of these complexes has been assessed with the help of DFT calculations, which has revealed that the cis -isomer is the more stable isomer. The coordinated dmso's in the [Ru(L n ) 2 (dmso) 2 ] complexes could be easily displaced by chelating bidentate ligands (depicted as Lʹ) to furnish complexes of type [Ru(L n ) 2 (Lʹ)], as demonstrated through isolation of two such complexes, viz. [Ru(L 3 ) 2 (bpy)] and [Ru(L 2 ) 2 (phen)] (bpy = 2,2ʹ-bipyridine and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). Crystal structure of [Ru(L 3 ) 2 (bpy)] has been determined, and structure of [Ru(L 2 ) 2 (phen)] has been optimized by DFT method. Electronic spectra of the four [Ru(L n ) 2 (dmso) 2 ] complexes and the two derivatives ([Ru(L n ) 2 (Lʹ)]; n = 3, Lʹ = bpy; and n = 2, Lʹ = phen), recorded in dichloromethane solutions, show intense absorptions spanning the visible and ultraviolet regions, which have been analyzed by TDDFT method. The [Ru(L n ) 2 (dmso) 2 ] complexes are found to serve as efficient catalyst-precursor for the acceptorless dehydrogenation of 2-propanol followed by crossed-aldol condensation with substituted-benzaldehydes (and related aldehydes), using tert -butoxide as co-catalyst, producing dibenzylideneacetone derivatives in good yields.

Abstract:A Ru/NH2-MCM-41 catalyst was prepared via a coordination-assisted strategy for chemoselective hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate with a high selectivity of methyl glycolate (ca. 100%) and ethylene glycol (>90%) at reaction temperatures of 343 K and 433 K, respectively. The amino groups help to anchor and form stable electron-rich Ru active sites, which accounts for the excellent CO bond activation and hydrogenation selectivity.

Abstract:A versatile, selective, solvent (methanol vs ethanol)- and base (potassium vs lithium carbonate)-assisted switchable synthesis of saturated ketone and α-methyl saturated ketone from α,β-unsaturated ketone is developed. Mechanistic aspects, evaluated from spectroscopic studies, in situ monitoring of the reaction progress, control studies, and labeling studies, further indicate the involvement of a tandem dehydrogenation-condensation-hydrogenation sequence in the reaction, in which the interconvertible coordination mode (imino N → Ru and amido N-Ru) of coordinated imidazole with Ru(II)-para-cymene is crucial, without which the efficiency and selectivity of the catalyst are completely lost. The catalyst demonstrates good efficiency, selectivity, and functional group tolerance and displays a broad scope (69 examples) for monomethylation and hydrogenation of unsaturated chalcones, double methylation of ketones, and N-methylation of amines.

Abstract:Homogeneous catalysts for the deoxygenation of sulfoxides to sulfides have not been widely explored. Herein, we report a green and efficient protocol for the catalytic hydrogenation of sulfoxides using an an air-stable diamino Mo 3 S 4 cluster complex under mild conditions (6 bar of H 2 pressure and 50 °C in acetonitrile). Our strategy exhibits an excellent group tolerance so it can be widely applied in the late-stage functionalization of pharmacological drugs and other valuable products containing sulfide moieties. Kinetic studies in combination with control experiments and DFT calculations support the operation of a sulfur-based cluster catalysis mechanism similar to the one previously reported for the hydrogenation of azobenzene and semihydrogenation of alkynes. After hydrogen activation at two of the bridging sulfides to form an hydrosulfide intermediate, hydrogen is transferred sequentially first as a proton and then as a hydride, what differenciates this mechanism from the analogous previous ones.

Abstract:A small library of easily prepared diamidophosphite-sulfides based on 1,3-thioether alcohols, primarily of terpenoid nature, was developed. Upon complexation with Pd(II) ion these hemilabile ligands showed the ability to form both P , S -chelates and complexes with two ligands P -monodentately bonded to the metal. The structures of the ligands and their complexes were determined by 2D NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The use of these stereoselectors provided up to 95% ee in the classic Pd-catalyzed asymmetric allylic substitution reactions of ( E )-1,3-diphenylallyl acetate with C- and N-nucleophiles and up to 80% ee in the Pd-mediated allylic alkylation of cinnamyl acetate with β-ketoesters. In addition, ee values of up to 90% with quantitative conversion were achieved in the Rh-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of methyl esters of unsaturated acids. The effects of the structural parameters, reaction conditions and ligand-to-metal ratio on the catalytic results are considered.

Abstract:The catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to formate was achieved using the previously reported dichloro(ƞ6‐p‐cymene){diphenyl(3‐methyl‐2‐indolyl)phosphine}ruthenium (1) as a catalyst under mild conditions. In this complex, the phosphorus‐based ligand adopts a κ1‐P coordination mode. The catalytic activity was achieved in the presence of DBU as a base providing a TONmax value of 3,800. In order to explore potential transformations occurring within the catalytic reactions, a series of stoichiometric tests were performed. Complex 1 was reacted with DBU to form chloro(ƞ6‐p‐cymene){diphenyl(3‐methyl‐2‐indolide)phosphine}ruthenium (2). Structural characterization of complex 2 confirmed a κ2‐P,N coordination mode for the ligand resulting in a four membered metallacycle. Reaction of 2 with H2 led to the formation of hydrochloro(ƞ6‐p‐cymene){diphenyl(3‐methyl‐indolyl)phosphine}ruth‐enium (3), albeit not with a clean conversion. This is the product resulting from the formal addition of hydrogen across the Ru‒N bond of the metallacycle. Complex 3 was also synthesised via an alternative route involving the reaction of complex 1 with Me2NH•BH3.

Abstract:A series of 3-oxoglutaric acid derivatives have been hydrogenated in different solvents in the presence of [RuCl(benzene)(S)-SunPhos]Cl (SunPhos=(2,2,2',2'-tetramethyl-[4,4'-bibenzo[d][1,3]dioxole]-5,5'-diyl)bis(diphenylphosphine)). Unlike simple beta-keto acid derivatives, these advanced analogues can be readily hydrogenated in uncommon solvents such as THF, CH2Cl2, acetone, and dioxane with high enantioselectivities. Two possible catalytic cycles have been proposed to explain the different reactivities of these 1,3,5-tricarbonyl substrates in the tested solvents. The C-2 and C-4 substituents had notable but irregular influence on the reactivity and enantioselectivity of the reactions. More pronounced solvent effects were observed: the ee values increased from around 20?% in EtOH or THF to 90?% in acetone. Inversion of the product configuration was observed when the solvent was changed from EtOH to THF or acetone, and a mixed solvent system can lead to better enantioselectivity than a single solvent.

Abstract:The water-soluble complex Ru(H)2(CO)(o-TPPTS)3 was used as a catalyst precursor for the hydrogenation of naturally occurring allylbenzenes, such as eugenol, estragole, and safrole, in an aqueous biphasic system. Under the best-operating conditions, P = 900 psi (62 atm), Tθ = 90 °C (363.15 K), S/C ratio = 80/1, time = 6 h, and stirring rate = 800 rpm, this catalyst precursor showed a good activity and selectivity towards C = C bond hydrogenation. When working with eugenol, the isomerization by-product (isoeugenol) was obtained in addition to the hydrogenation product. Preliminary kinetics studies indicate that the individual reactivity order was estragole > allylbenzene > safrole > eugenol. In contrast, a quaternary olefin mixture showed that the hydrogenation rate was somewhat similar to that of individual allylbenzene. The classic Hg test confirmed the molecular nature of the Ru water-soluble complex. Finally, the catalyst recycling study indicates that this complex can be used up to three times, maintaining the same catalytic activity.

Abstract:A series of Cl2Ru(diphosphane)L-2 (II) complexes in which L = N1-alkylated benzimidazoles. bonding to the metal through nitrogen, have been synthesized and characterized. In the case of 1-methylbenzimidazole, the resulting complexes exist as statistical mixtures of all possible conformational isomers. When the size or the substituent on he benzimdazole was, increased to complexes could be prepared that exist as a single diastereometer. All complexes possessing benzimidazole ligands bound to the ruthenium center are active for the mild and chemoselective hydrogenation of ketones in the presence of alkenes. Catalysts that exist as a single diastereomer, prepared with enantiomerically pure diphosphatics, catalyze the hydrogenation of prochiral ketones with moderate levels of enantioselectivity that are significantly improved relative to catalysts existing in several conformations.
