Abstract:Biodegradable mulches have become the focus of attention, as pollution caused by leftover plastic mulch material becomes increasingly severe. However, the impact of biodegradable mulches to the soil needs to be further investigated. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of no-mulch, biodegradable film mulch (BM) and polyethylene film mulch (PM) on the soil’s physical, chemical and biological properties after six years (2013–2019) of mulching in garlic growing season in a garlic-maize rotation. Results showed that the soil bulk density of the 10–20 cm soil layer under BM decreased by 12.09–17.17% compared with that under PM. The soil total nitrogen content increased significantly by 14.75–28.37%, and the soil available phosphorus and potassium content increased by 64.20% and 108.82%, respectively. In addition, BM increased the soil’s microbial, soil urease, and soil catalase activities compared with those for PM. To sum up, BM can reduce soil bulk density, and long-term use of BM does not cause a decrease in soil nutrient content and microbial activity. On the contrary, it can improve soil quality. This study helps accumulate data for the environmental safety evaluation of BM and provides theoretical and technical support for the large-scale promotion of biodegradable mulches.

Abstract:Biodegradable plastic films have emerged as a substitute for conventional plastic films. Nevertheless, responses of plant-associated microbiomes to the application of biodegradable film mulching at field scale have received little attention. A field experiment was conducted to assess the influence of different film mulching treatments on various microbial attributes and nitrogen (N) cycling functional genes in bulk and rhizosphere soils. Biodegradable film mulching raised the bacterial Shannon index in bulk soils but not in rhizosphere soils. Biodegradable film mulching has led to an increase in the complexity and connectivity of microbial networks, as well as an enhancement in the positive association among microorganisms owing to raised soil nutrients and increased crop biomass. In biodegradable film-treated soils, both bacterial and fungal communities were primarily influenced by stochastic processes associated with dispersal limitation. Moreover, conventional plastic film mulching increased denitrification, anammox, N fixation, and dissimilatory nitrate-reduction (DNRA) gene abundance in bulk soils. In rhizosphere soils, biodegradable film mulching reduced nitrification, denitrification, anammox, N fixation, and DNRA gene abundance. Furthermore, keystone genera (e.g., Nitrosospira, Truepera, Adhaeribacter, Opitutus, and Fusarium) were affected by edaphic variables, contributing to decreased N-cycling gene abundance in biodegradable film-treated soils. Collectively, biodegradable film mulching transformed soil microbiome assembly and functional adaptation, and soil nutrient availability and plant biomass were the critical factors influencing the microbial community. These findings present a novel perspective on the diverse impacts of biodegradable and conventional film mulching on soil microbiome and N-cycling processes.
Appraisal of Biodegradable Mulching Films and Vegetal-Derived Biostimulant Application as Eco-Sustainable Practices for Enhancing Lettuce Crop Performance and Nutritive Value

Abstract:Scientists, extensions specialists, and growers are seeking sustainable agricultural practices that are able to cope with these objectives in order to ensure global food security and minimize environmental damage. The use of mulching films and plant biostimulants in agriculture seems to be a valid solution for tackling these rising concerns. A greenhouse experiment was conducted in order to elucidate the morpho-physiological and nutritive characteristics of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) in response to foliar application of a tropical plant extract (PE) biostimulant and the use of plastic mulches. Two biodegradable mulch treatments (Mater-Bi® 1 and Mater-Bi® 2) were compared to black polyethylene (LDPE) and bare soil. Biodegradable mulch film Mater-Bi® 1 produced a comparable marketable fresh yield to the commercial standard polyethylene (LDPE), whereas Mater-Bi® 2 exhibited the highest crop productivity. When averaged over biostimulant application, lettuce plants grown with biodegradable film Mater-Bi® 2 exhibited superior quality traits in terms of K, Ca, total ascorbic acid, and carotenoids content. The combination of film mulching (LDPE, Mater-Bi® 1 or Mater-Bi® 2) with the tropical plant extract biostimulant exhibited a positive and significant synergistic effect (+30%) on yield. The PE-biostimulant induced higher values of SPAD index and total chlorophyll content when compared to untreated greenhouse lettuce. The mineral content of leaf tissues was greater by 10% and 17% (for P and Ca, respectively) when compared to the untreated lettuce (no PE application). Nitrate content was significantly reduced by 23% in greenhouse lettuce plants receiving PE as compared to the untreated control. The positive effect of Mater-Bi® 2 film on the ascorbic acid content has also been highlighted when combined with the biostimulant application, where a major amplification of total ascorbic acid (+168%) was recorded in comparison to the untreated lettuce. Overall, our work can assist leafy vegetables growers in adopting good agricultural practices, such as biodegradable plastic mulches and vegetal-derived biostimulants, to improve the sustainability of greenhouse production.
Preparation of Bio-Material Liquid Film and Its Function of Reducing Soil Water Evaporation

Abstract:Surface mulch is regarded as an effective manner to reducing soil water evaporation, but limited with the adverse influence of plastic film mulch on agro-ecosystems. In this paper, liquid films were prepared with the foundation of kelp as a bio-material. The results showed that the films prepared with the mixture of kelp and polyvinyl alcohol (PA) had superimposed layering structure with tiny pores and gaps, and were stable as well as degradable under field water conditions. The results of the simulative experiments with both of aquic sand-loamy soil and yellow silt-loamy soil that mulching with the film of the mixture of kelp and polyvinyl alcohol (PA) could significantly ( P <0.01) reduce water evaporation from soil. It was also found that mulching with the liquid films could increase the water retention capacity of the tested soils. As the initial material – kelp is available, the application of the developed liquid film based on kelp for efficient soil moisture management in agricultural production should be recommended.
Soil Organic Carbon Balance and Nitrogen Cycling in Plastic Film Mulched Croplands in Rainfed Farming Systems

Abstract:With the rapid increase in the application area, the effects of plastic film mulch on the sustainability and productivity of rainfed croplands received more and more attention from society. In this review, after briefly summarizing the yield increase effect of plastic film mulch cropping in semiarid rainfed areas, we focused on recent advances in the field of plastic film mulch effects on the soil organic carbon (SOC) balance and nitrogen (N) cycling. Plastic film mulch, especially when combined with a ridge-furrow approach, significantly relieves the limitations of insufficient hydrothermal conditions to crop production, and thus profoundly increases crop yields and cropland productivity. The yield increase effect has a clear regional variation pattern: being greater in more hydrothermally limited areas than in less hydrothermally limited areas. Literature retrieval showed that studies of plastic film mulch effects on SOC balance and N cycling were scarce in croplands. Limited research results showed that plastic mulch stimulates SOC mineralization while increasing crop root-derived carbon input to the soil, and thus the SOC balance can be maintained. Also, limited research results showed that plastic mulch stimulates soil N mineralization thus increases soil N availability and crop N uptake; however, it is not clear if the plastic film mulch increases denitrification. Plastic mulch influences the fertilizer N use efficiency of crops and leaching and ammonia volatilization losses. According to the current research progresses, we proposed three research directions to be further strengthened: (1) Soil organic matter stability and its reinforcement mechanisms in plastic-mulched croplands. (2) Systematically accessing nutrient management strategy and practice. (3) Investigating and introducing straw mulch and no-tillage cropping in areas where the temperature is not a major limitation to production.

Abstract:Recently, the demands of biodegradable plastic for mulching application have vastly increased due to environmental concern, conservation of soil health and ease of residue management after growing season. The raise in demands also reflected by the increased number of studies related to biodegradable plastic mulch in the past 10 years. Biodegradable plastic mulch film has emerged as a promising alternative material for mulching due to ease of installation, offers benefits comparable to polyethylene (PE) mulch film, in situ biodegradation and able to improve soil fertility. This review sheds light on recent advances in different formulations of plastic mulch film. Formulations based on single polymer, polymer blends and polymer composites of biodegradable natural and synthetic polymeric materials particularly for mulching application were discussed. Comprehensive discussions on the performance of different formulations used for mulching material are reviewed in this review article.

Effects of plastic film mulch biodegradability on nitrogen in the plant-soil system

Abstract:The application of biodegradable film mulching (BFM) instead of non-biodegradable film mulching (NBFM) is a promising way to mitigate the negative impacts of residual film in agricultural mulching systems. But the effects of BFM on soil mineral nitrogen (N) are not known. To investigate the effects of BFM on N mineralization, nitrate (NO3−) accumulation and leaching, and plant N uptake, we conducted two-year field experiment with five treatments: no-mulching (No-M), white non-biodegradable film mulching (White-NotBioM), black non-biodegradable film mulching (Black-NotBioM), white biodegradable film mulching (White-BioM), and black biodegradable film mulching (Black-BioM). The net N mineralization in NBFM was greater than that in BFM due to the disintegration of biodegradable films in the middle and late stages of maize growth, resulting in a decrease in soil water content under BFM. Higher net N mineralization caused a higher NO3− accumulation in the topsoil (0–20 cm) under NBFM. The NO3− accumulation in the topsoil in Black-NotBioM was 23–88% higher than that in Black-BioM; while in White-NotBioM it was 16–63% higher than that in White-BioM. After two years of cropping, the NO3− accumulation in 100–180 cm (defined as N leaching in deep layers, NLD) in NBFM was 52–63% higher than that in BFM, implying that the higher NO3− accumulation in the topsoil in NBFM caused more N leaching. The yields and plant N uptake were similar between NBFM and BFM, but BFM had higher N harvest index values. Compared with NBFM, BFM showed less NO3− accumulation in the topsoil and less NLD, whereas yield, plant N uptake and net economic benefits were not reduced. Therefore, BFM, especially Black-BioM, could be an alternative to NBFM in maize production on the Loess Plateau. However, the higher N accumulation in root soil layer (0–100 cm) under Black-BioM should be accounted for in N fertilizer management.

Abstract:Biodegradable films are a valuable and sustainable alternative to plastic films for mulching soils since they avoid the environmental and economic problems related to plastic removal and disposal. Nevertheless, the fast degradation of such materials could make them unsuitable for mid- to long-term use. In a field experiment, the agronomic performance of a biodegradable mulching film (MB) was compared to that of conventional low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film for two consecutive lettuce cycles (winter and spring). In the conditions of this trial, MB showed good resistance to atmospheric agents, with a reduction of its integrity and mechanical properties only after six months. The effects on soil temperature and lettuce yield did not differ from those obtained with LDPE films. The effect on harvest timing was the same as that with LDPE in the spring cycle, while in the winter cycle, the harvest was delayed by about five days compared to LDPE. Mulching films reduced nitrate accumulation in leaves mainly during the winter cycle. However, the effect needs to be further explored with experiments in different pedoclimatic conditions that consider the effects of mulching on nitrification and nitrate-reductase activity that could be affected by changes in soil temperature and moisture. Highlights - Biodegradable mulching films (MB) showed good mechanical resistance in the medium-long term (2 consecutive lettuce cycles). - Decrease in integrity and resistance to tearing became significant after 150-170 days. - The effect of MB on lettuce yield quantity and quality was comparable with that using low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films. - The effects of both mulching films on leaf nitrate content need further research in different pedoclimatic conditions. - MB can be recommended since it reduces the economic and environmental costs of removal and disposal of LDPE films.

Abstract:Plastic mulch films are widely used in agriculture to enhance crop production by suppressing weeds, conserving soil water and increasing soil temperature. The majority of plastic mulch films are however not biodegradable and are typically removed after each growing season. Recovery of these plastics from the soil is difficult and can affect successive crop yields while causing substantive cost to the environment and farmers. Due to increasingly stringent regulations regarding use of non-degradable plastic in agriculture they are likely to be phased out in the near future. In the past 10 years several classes of ‘biodegradable’ materials have been studied but most of these films are reported to be relatively weak in mechanical properties, not efficiently degradable and cost prohibitive.More recently, researchers have turned their attention to sprayable biodegradable polymer coatings for use on soils due to their easy application and versatility. The ability to mix natural additives, plasticizers and fillers to control and improve the mechanical and biodegradation properties of the core polymeric mulch film has been the driving force behind the development of these next generation sprayable polymeric mulch films.There have been many excellent review articles and papers written about polymeric mulch film, but the developing sprayable polymer systems have not been reviewed to the same extent. This paper focusses on the research progress in the area of biodegradable and sprayable polymer mulch film with emphasis on polymer formulations, properties and application. It also discusses current research to highlight the importance, potential benefits and future challenges in developing a cost effective biodegradable sprayable film for use in production agriculture.

Abstract:This paper clarifies the farm applicability and feasibility of spreading biodegradable plastic film mulching for garlic production to ensure the green and sustainable development of the garlic industry. We set up a field trial of garlic planting with biodegradable plastic film mulching (BM) and plastic film mulching (PM), using no film mulching (CK) as the control, and measured CH4 and N2O emissions in the garlic fields. The yield-scaled global warming potential, carbon footprint, and net ecosystem economic benefit (NEEB) were used to assess the comprehensive impact of the different treatments. Compared to the CK, film mulching significantly increased CH4 absorption, with significantly higher seasonal cumulative CH4 emissions (20.5%) in BM than PM, but significantly increased N2O emissions, with significantly lower seasonal cumulative N2O emissions (23.53%) in BM than PM. Both BM and PM improved garlic yield, with PM significantly increasing garlic yield by 18.86% compared to the CK. Moreover, film mulching significantly decreased the yield-scaled global warming potential (by 52.06% and 40.82% in PM and BM, respectively). PM had a significantly higher carbon footprint than BM. Film mulching improved NEEB by 9.29–11.78%. Considering crop yields and environmental benefits, we propose BM as an effective method for a green and efficient garlic production.

Abstract:Plastic film mulch alters the soil environment and improves crop production. Although the response of aboveground parts of agroecosystems to plastic film mulch has been extensively studied, no studies have investigated the response of the soil microbiome to plastic film mulch and its effect on crop yield. Here, we performed a meta-analysis of 536 observations to elucidate the response of the soil microbial community to plastic film mulch. Plastic film mulch significantly increased soil microbial alpha-diversity (Shannon: +0.043, 95% CI: +0.022 to + 0.064; richness: +0.037, 95% CI: +0.007 to + 0.067), abundance (+0.104, 95% CI: +0.070 to + 0.139), and eco-functionality (+0.129, 95% CI: +0.087 to + 0.170). In neutral pH soil and field combined plastic film mulch with ridge–furrow tillage, plastic film mulch had a significant impact on microbial richness. Microbial abundance increased significantly when chemical fertilizer was used, but not when organic fertilizer was used. The effect of low-level nitrogen on N acquisition enzyme actives is greater than that of medium and high nitrogen input. Thick film mulch produced a larger positive response in microbial abundance, C acquisition, and oxidative enzyme activities than thin film mulch. Changes in microbial functionality were decoupled with diversity, while in tandem with its abundance and community structure. The increases in microbial C acquisition, N acquisition, and oxidative enzyme activities were significantly linked to yield. Our findings highlight the beneficial effects of plastic film mulch on the soil microbial community and have further implications for the development of soil health-friendly agricultural management.

Abstract:Modern agriculture is troubled by white pollution caused by nondegradable polyethylene (PE) mulch film and high transportation costs caused by the large amount of water in liquid mulch film. Aiming at these problems, this study developed a new degradable and water-free powder mulch film (SUPM) with straw powders, urea, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as raw materials. The wind erosion resistance and film-forming properties of SUP powders as SUPM's precursor were investigated as well as the influence of PVA and urea content on the mechanical properties and water resistance of SUPM film. The results showed that PVA in SUPM film was in a gradient distribution conducive to the germination of crop seedlings. Here, PVA colloids were more distributed at the interface between film and air than at the interface between film and soil. The optimized SUPM film exhibited a biodegradation rate of 90.5 % over 100 d. After SUPM film degradation, soil carbon and nitrogen contents were 33.5 and 58.8 % higher, respectively, than in bare soil. In two consecutive planting experiments, pakchoi yields were higher and more stable in the soil with SUPM than in bare soil and soil with PE. Compared to other reported biodegradable mulch films, SUPM demonstrated advantages in ease of use, enhancement of soil carbon and nitrogen content, and stable crop yields. This study provided a new approach for the large-scale utilization of straw waste, mitigating environmental issues caused by traditional PE mulch, and promoting the development of environment-friendly modern agriculture.

Abstract:Soil pollution caused by the residual polyethylene film is a potential threat to agricultural sustainability. Biodegradable films are generally effective alternatives to reduce this pollution. However, soil quality changes responding to continuous biodegradable film mulch are still unclear. To reveal the accumulative effects of biodegradable film mulch on soil quality, we conducted a positioning experiment from 2016 to 2019 in North China Plain (NCP). Four treatments, including transparent polyethylene film mulching (PM), transparent biodegradable film mulching (TM), black biodegradable film mulching (BM), and non-mulching (CK) were employed. The results showed that compared with CK, both BM and TM treatments significantly reduced soil bulk density and increased soil microbial activity and soil enzyme activity; however, BM and TM did not affect soil nutrient content. Compared with CK, BM treatment significantly increased soil quality index (SQI) by 7.2% (in 2019) due to higher soil fertility content and bioactivity; however, TM and PM treatments decreased SQI by 3.2% and 3.8%, respectively. Besides, compared with CK, BM significantly enhanced summer maize grain yield by 30.35%. Therefore, black biodegradable film is a potential alternative to polyethylene film to improve soil quality and maize production in NCP.

Abstract:The plastic film mulching system has a significant role in increasing crop grain yields by changing the microenvironment of the plant. On the other hand, plastic mulching materials pollute the land and water because they are not degraded or disposed of properly. Biodegradable plastic mulches (BPM) may be used as a substitute for conventional low-density polyethylene (LDPE) to protect soil health. In this review, the effect of micro(nano)plastics on soil health and function has been discussed in light of their distribution in soil, changes in soil biochemistry, interactions between microplastics with soil microbes and plants, and their growth patterns. The nano-plastics are now incorporated into the food chain from the soil through plants and finally harm the whole ecosystem, including humans. The use of BPM has been practiced recently, but only 1% of the world’s total plastic production is from biodegradable materials. In the second part of the review, the confusing terms "bio-based" and "biodegradable" were clarified based on their polymeric constituents. The physical parameters of different constituent materials for mulching purposes and their capability for sustainable solarization have been discussed. The effect of biodegradable mulches on soil health and other ecotoxic effects on plants, soil microorganisms, and other soil dwellers like Daphnia magna, Vibrio fischeri bacteria, green algae, slime mould, protozoa, invertebrates like earthworms, and common water fleas have been focused on in this review. In conclusion, the use of BPM for mulching purposes was reported to improve crop quality and yield and reduce weed growth in comparison to naked soil. The recent short-term studies ensured that mulches stayed unbroken throughout the growing season. But simultaneously, the biodegradable mulches affect soil health and have a substantial impact on physical parameters such as soil pH, electrical conductivity, aggregate stability, infiltration, nitrate-N, exchangeable potassium, etc. Therefore, a lot of long-term research is required for the use of BPM as a substitute for conventional LDPE as a mulching film in the agricultural field.

Abstract:Plastic mulch is widely utilized for weed control, temperature regulation, soil erosion prevention, disease management, and soil structure improvement, ultimately enhancing crop quality and yield. However, a significant issue with conventional plastic mulches is their low recycling rates, which can cause plastic residue to build up, thereby damaging soil quality and reducing crop yield. The emergence of biodegradable films offers a promising solution to mitigate this issue and reduce soil pollution. However, its potential effects on soil properties and plant performance remain unclear. In this study, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and poly (butylene succinate-co-butylene adipate) (PBSA) were used to observe the effect of plastic mulch residues on soil properties and plant growth performance via potting experiment. Additionally, the interaction effects of compost and biochar as soil amendments with plastic mulch residues were also evaluated. The result of this study revealed that the type of plastic significantly affected the total nitrogen and magnesium uptake; however, the morphological traits of the tested plant (Japanese mustard spinach) were not significantly affected. The addition of compost and biochar led to a significant increase in both shoot and total dry weight of the plant, indicating a positive effect on its growth. The results of the two-way ANOVA indicated a significant influence of plastic type on dissolved phosphate (PO 4 3− ) levels and soil dehydrogenase activity (DHA). The interaction effect (plastic type with soil amendment) was statistically significant only for soil DHA. Neither plastic mulch residues nor soil amendments significantly affected other soil chemical properties. However, long-term experiments to systematically investigate the long-term effects of plastic residues are necessary.

Abstract:To investigate the effects of plastic film mulches and their residual films after use on soil bacterial communities, mulching experiment and the subsequent residual film experiment were conducted on winter-planting potato field in two locations. During mulching experiment, treatments biodegradable film mulch (BM) and PE film mulch (PM) reduced soil nutrient regarding available nitrogen and available potassium, as well as microbial biomass carbon (MBC), but increased urease activity, as compared to treatment no film mulch (NM). Soil moisture was significantly elevated by mulching practices and correlated with more microbial phyla than the other tested soil properties, indicating its important role in shaping soil bacterial communities. In addition, mulching practices increased alpha diversity of soil bacteria, although location heterogeneity was observed. Network analyses showed that both treatments BM and PM promoted the interrelations within bacterial communities and harbored more keystone taxa than treatment NM. During residual film experiment, residual films from BM and PM were incorporated into soil after harvest of potato. Treatment residual biodegradable film (RBF) significantly increased the content of MBC and activity of β-glucosidase (BG) as compared to treatments residual PE film (RPF) and no residual film (NRF), and BG had the most correlations with microbial phyla among all the tested soil properties. Treatments RBF and RPF increased the relative abundance of some dominant bacterial phyla, including Bacteroidetes , Actinobacteria , and Chlorofexi , and enhanced the interrelations within bacterial community, whereas more keystone taxa were harbored by treatment RBF, due to the increase of keystone taxa in phyla Acidobacteria , Actinobacteria , Bacteroidetes , and Proteobacteria . These results indicate that the indirect effects of biodegradable and PE film mulch as a soil surface barrier on soil are similar, whereas their direct effects via incorporation into soil as residual films show specificity.

Abstract:The effectiveness of biofertilizers as a cost-effective crop yield enhancer can be compromised by residual soil pollutants. However, the impact of accumulated polyadipate/butylene terephthalate microplastics (PBAT-MPs) from biodegradable mulch films on biofertilizer application and the consequent growth of crop plants remains unclear. Here, the effects of different levels of PBAT-MPs in soil treated with Bacillus amyloliquefaciens biofertilizer were assessed in a four-week potted experiment. PBAT-MPs significantly decreased the growth-promoting effect of the biofertilizer on Brassica chinensis L., resulting in a notable reduction in both above- and belowground biomass (up to 52.91% and 57.53%, respectively), as well as nitrate and crude fiber contents (up to 12.18% and 13.64%, respectively). In the rhizosphere microenvironment, PBAT-MPs increased soil organic carbon by 2.63-fold and organic matter by 2.68-fold, while enhancing sucrase (from 67.55% to 108.89%) and cellulase (from 31.26% to 49.10%) activities. PBAT-MPs also altered the rhizospheric bacterial community composition/diversity, resulting in more complex microbial networks. With regard to microbial function, PBAT-MPs impacted carbon metabolic function by inhibiting the 3-hydroxypropionate/4-hydroxybutyrate fixation pathway and influencing chitin and lignin degradation processes. Overall, the rhizospheric microbial profiles (composition, function, and network interactions) were the main contributors to plant growth inhibition. This study provides a practical case and theoretical basis for rational use of biodegradable mulch films and indicates that the residue of biodegradable films needs pay attention.

Abstract:The dramatic increase in plastic film mulching in water-efficient agriculture is primarily due to its versatile nature that has proven to be very beneficial over the last decade in the arid region. However, as carelessly used plastic mulch films lead to agro-environmental pollution, there has been vigorous research recently to develop degradable film materials for mulching. This review describes the use of plastic film for mulching in water-efficient agriculture practices with special reference to progress made in degradable film materials. Moreover, this review includes water-efficient mechanisms and techniques of mulching film cultivation, photodegradable and biodegradable plastic polymers (PHA, PCL etc. synthetic- and natural-based polymers films), their degradation process and developmental deficiencies, and an outlook of degradable film materials. There exists great potential for the further development of water-efficient agriculture; however, it is dependent upon effective research and the wide-spectrum applications of degradable film materials.

Abstract:The plastic mulch film in agriculture has increased dominantly in the last 20 years in entire world. The use of plastic mulch film thus increases the benefits such as increase in soil temperature, reduced weed pressure, moisture conservation, reduction of certain insect pests, higher crop yields, and more efficient use of soil nutrients. The main problem with the plastic mulch film was disposing of used plastic films, which cause pollution, and this issue led to development of photodegradable and biodegradable mulches. Here, review the use of plastic mulches in agriculture, with special reference to biode- gradable mulches. Major topics discussed are (1) history of plastic mulch and impact on crop yield and pest management, (2) limitations of polyethylene mulches and potential alternatives, (3) biodegradable and photodegradable plastic mulches, (4) field performance of biodegradable mulches, and (5) use of biodegradable plastic mulches in organic production. We found that removal and disposal of conventional polyethylene mulches remains a major agro- nomic, economic, and environmental constrain. polymers such as poly(lactic acid), poly(butylene adipate- coterephthalate), poly(ε-caprolactone), and starch-based polymer blends or copolymers can degrade when exposed to bioactive environments such as soil and compost; The biodegradable materials obtained from petroleum and natural resources, opportunity for using biodegradable polymers as agricultural mulch films has become more viable, and the source of polymer and additives may limit use of some biode- gradable mulches in organic production. More knowledge is needed on the effect of biodegradable mulches on crop growth, microclimate modifications, soil biota, soil fertility, and yields.
Development of bio-composite mulch film from cotton gin wastes: Study of pesticide residue and outdoor stability and degradation

Abstract:Non-degradable plastic mulch films used in agriculture are polluting the environment by leaving residues and microplastics in the soil. They are also difficult to recycle due to contamination during their use. Biodegradable mulch films are needed as alternatives so that they can be used effectively during the growing season and later be ploughed to be degraded in soil. However, market-available so-called biodegradable mulch films are very slow to degrade in the natural environment and thus do not fit with crop rotation demands or annual cultivation. In this study, we have developed mulch films from cotton gin trash (CGT) and/or gin motes (GM) in combination with biodegradable polycaprolactone and demonstrated their effectiveness over 3 months in outdoor conditions. Both the stability and degradation behaviours of mulch film samples were observed when they were placed on top of the soil and buried in the soil, respectively. Pesticide residue analysis also was carried out on CGT powder to identify and quantify individual pesticides against a matrix of known pesticides. The mulch films prepared in this study showed comparable and stable mechanical properties compared to commercial biodegradable mulch film, though were much quicker to degrade when buried in the soil. No pesticides were detected in the CGT samples. The films produced were vapour-permeable and may be useful in practical agricultural settings by being able to maintain consistent soil moisture and allowing precipitation to penetrate gradually. The lab-scale production cost for the film was 98.8 AUD/kg, which could be lowered by integrating a continuous film line in large-scale production.
