Abstract:Satisfactory wound dressings play an essential role in patient care and nanomaterial-based wound dressings have been identified as the ideal candidate which has been extensively employed to facilitate wound-healing processes, particularly burn wounds. Nature has bestowed mankind with immense benefitting phytocompounds, that have profound effects in treating the infected area. The current review displays the application of Camellia sinensis-derived catechins; the Epigallocatechin catechins (EGCG)as nano-formulations in wound dressing materials in the form of Liposomes, lipid nanoparticles, natural polymers, peptide nanostructures, hydrogels, microneedles, nanoparticles and electro-spun fibers. The promising effects of the catechins-based dressings at different stages of the wound healing process are summarized based on their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and angiogenesis efficacy. Further, the combinatorial effect of catechins and antibiotics against the inhibition of common wound pathogens has been summarized. This review elucidates the foundation of utilizing catechins in promoting the skin wound healing process, its toxicity and safety concerns, and its role in preventing scar formation, contributing to future direction about the contribution of catechins in the clinical field of research and its challenges.
