Abstract:Variations in dynamics are an essential component of musical performance in most instruments. To study the factors that contribute to dynamic variations, we used a model approaching, allowing for determination of the individual contribution of different musical features. Thirty monophonic melodies from 3 stylistic eras with all expressive markings removed were performed by 20 pianists on a Disklavier piano. The results indicated a relatively high agreement among the pianists (Cronbach's alpha = 0.88). The overall average dynamics (across pianists) could be predicted quite well using support vector regression (R2 = 66%) from a set of 48 score-related features. The highest contribution was from pitch-related features (37.3%), followed by phrasing (12.3%), timing (2.8%), and meter (0.7%). The highest single contribution was from the high-loud principle, whereby higher notes were played louder, as corroborated by the written feedback of many of the pianists. There were also differences between the styles. The highest contribution from phrasing, for example, was obtained from the Romantic examples, while the highest contribution from meter came from the Baroque examples. An analysis of each individual pianist revealed some fundamental differences in approach to the performance of dynamics. All participants were undergraduate-standard pianists or above; however, varied levels of consistency and predictability highlighted challenges in acquiring a reliable group in terms of expertise and preparation, as well as certain pianistic challenges posed by the task. Nevertheless, the method proved useful in disentangling some underlying principles of musical performance and their relation to structural features of the score, with the potential for productive adaptation to a wider range of expressive and instrumental contexts.

Abstract:What sets a great music performance apart? In this study, we addressed this question through an examination of value judgments in written criticism of recorded performance. One hundred reviews of recordings of Beethoven's piano sonatas, published in the Gramophone between 1934 and 2010, were analyzed through a three-step qualitative analysis that identified the valence (positive/negative) expressed by critics' statements and the evaluation criteria that underpinned their judgments. The outcome is a model of the main evaluation criteria used by professional critics: aesthetic properties, including intensity, coherence, and complexity, and achievement-related properties, including sureness, comprehension, and endeavor. The model also emphasizes how critics consider the suitability and balance of these properties across the musical and cultural context of the performance. The findings relate directly to current discourses on the role of evaluation in music criticism and the generalizability of aesthetic principles. In particular, the perceived achievement of the performer stands out as a factor that drives appreciation of a recording.

Abstract:Established pedagogical theories for classical piano usually do not consider the essential relationship between the musical structure, whole body movements, and expression. Research focusing on musicians' expression has shown that body movements reflect the performer's understanding of the musical structure. However, most studies to date focus on the performance of a single piece at a time, leaving unanswered the question on how structural parameters of pieces with varied technical difficulties influence pianists' movements. In this study, 10 pianists performed three contrasting Romantic excerpts in terms of technical level and character, while motion data was collected with a passive infrared motion capture system. We observed how pianists modulate their performances for each of the three pieces and measured the absolute difference in percentage of duration and quantity of motion (QoM) between four expressive conditions (normal, deadpan, exaggerated, immobile). We analyzed common patterns within the time-series of position data to investigate whether pianists embody musical structure in similar ways. A survey was filled in by pianists to understand how they conceive the relationship between body movements and musical structure. Results show that the variation in duration between the exaggerated and deadpan conditions was significant in one measure for one of the excerpts, and that tempo was less affected by the QoM used than by the level of expression. By applying PCA on the pianists' position data, we found that the head QoM is an important parameter for communicating different expressions and structural features. Significant variations in head QoM were found in the immobile and deadpan conditions if compared to the normal condition, only in specific regions of the score. Recurrent head movements occurred along with certain structural parameters for two of the excerpts only. Altogether, these results indicate that the analysis of pianists' body movements and expressive intentions should be carried out in relation to the specific musical context, being dependent on the technical level of the pieces and the repertoire. These results, combined with piano teaching methods, may lead to the development of new approaches in instrumental lessons to help students make independent choices regarding body movements and expression.

Just noticeable differences in sound intensity of piano tones in non-musicians and experienced pianists

Abstract:Psychology of Music, Ahead of Print. Changes in sound intensity are important components of piano performance. Previous research in this area has largely focused on perception of changes in pitch and timing, with little investigation of sound intensity. The present study used Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) technology to algorithmically control the key velocity, and thereby sound intensity, of consecutive piano tones. Non-musicians (n = 20) and experienced pianists (n = 30) played pairs of consecutive piano tones with 0–15 arbitrary units (a.u.) of change in key velocity, indicating whether they perceived the first, second, or neither tone as louder. All participants completed the test with C4, and a subset (n = 24) with pitches C2 and C6 also. The mean just noticeable difference (JND) ranged from 2.71 to 4.48 a.u., corresponding to 0.68–1.22 dBC on the Yamaha Disklavier used to produce the stimuli. Experienced pianists demonstrated lower JND, which the authors theorize may be linked to listener motivation. When two tones were played with the same key velocity, participants tended to perceive the first tone as louder. The authors discuss a number of factors that may be relevant considerations for application of the findings in music and psychoacoustics research. These findings hold insight for music performance researchers, psychoacoustics researchers, and pedagogues.

Exploring historic changes in musical communication: Deconstructing emotional cues in preludes by Bach and Chopin

Abstract:A growing body of research analyzing musical scores suggests mode’s relationship with other expressive cues has changed over time. However, to the best of our knowledge, the perceptual implications of these changes have not been formally assessed. Here, we explore how compositional choices of 17th- and 19th-century composers (J. S. Bach and F. Chopin, respectively) differentially affect emotional communication. This novel exploration builds on our team’s previous techniques using commonality analysis to decompose intercorrelated cues in unaltered excerpts of influential compositions. In doing so, we offer an important naturalistic complement to traditional experimental work—often involving tightly controlled stimuli constructed to avoid the intercorrelations inherent to naturalistic music. Our data indicate intriguing changes in cues’ effects between Bach and Chopin, consistent with score-based research suggesting mode’s “meaning” changed across historical eras. For example, mode’s unique effect accounts for the most variance in valence ratings of Chopin’s preludes, whereas its shared use with attack rate plays a more prominent role in Bach’s. We discuss the implications of these findings as part of our field’s ongoing effort to understand the complexity of musical communication—addressing issues only visible when moving beyond stimuli created for scientific, rather than artistic, goals.

Abstract:Psychology of Music, Ahead of Print. The act of performing without a musical score is common and expected in many contexts. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of performing with and without a musical score on listeners' evaluations of solo pianists. We also investigated whether the effects of score use differed according to the perceived expertise of the performer. Participants (N = 69) were collegiate music students who observed two video recordings of a pianist performing an excerpt from Schubert's Impromptu Op. 90, No. 2. In one of the videos, the pianist used a musical score and in the other video the pianist did not use a score. One group of participants was informed at the outset that the pianist was an expert performer and the other group was told that the pianist was a student auditioning for a graduate program as a piano major. Participants rated each performance and indicated which recording they preferred. Results indicated no significant difference in ratings by performance condition overall, but significant interaction effects indicated that the effect of performance condition was dependent upon both the perceived expertise of the performer and presentation order. Chi-square results indicated no significant differences in participants' preferences between conditions.

Abstract:Research has indicated that the magnitude of physical expressive movements during a performance helps to communicate a musician's affective intent. However, the underlying function of these performance gestures remains unclear. Nine highly skilled solo pianists are examined here to investigate the effect of structural interpretation on performance motion patterns. Following previous findings that these performers generate repeated patterns of motion through overall upper-body movements corresponding to phrasing structure, this study now investigates the particular shapes traced by these movements. Through this we identify universal and idiosyncratic features within the shapes of motion patterns generated by these performers. Gestural shapes are examined for performances of Chopin’s explicitly structured A major Prelude (Op. 28, No. 7) and are related to individual interpretations of the more complex phrasing structure of Chopin’s B minor Prelude (Op. 28, No. 6). Findings reveal a universal general embodiment of phrasing structure and other higher-level structural features of the music. The physical makeup of this embodiment, however, is particular to both the performer and the piece being performed. Examining the link between performers' movements and interpreted structure strengthens understanding of the connection between body and instrument, furthering awareness of the relations between cognitive interpretation and physical expression of structure within music performance.

A Computational Study of the Role of Tonal Tension in Expressive Piano Performance

Abstract:Expressive variations of tempo and dynamics are an important aspect of music performances, involving a variety of underlying factors. Previous work has showed a relation between such expressive variations (in particular expressive tempo) and perceptual characteristics derived from the musical score, such as musical expectations, and perceived tension. In this work we use a computational approach to study the role of three measures of tonal tension proposed by Herremans and Chew (2016) in the prediction of expressive performances of classical piano music. These features capture tonal relationships of the music represented in Chew's spiral array model, a three dimensional representation of pitch classes, chords and keys constructed in such a way that spatial proximity represents close tonal relationships. We use non-linear sequential models (recurrent neural networks) to assess the contribution of these features to the prediction of expressive dynamics and expressive tempo using a dataset of Mozart piano sonatas performed by a professional concert pianist. Experiments of models trained with and without tonal tension features show that tonal tension helps predict change of tempo and dynamics more than absolute tempo and dynamics values. Furthermore, the improvement is stronger for dynamics than for tempo.

On Perceived Emotion in Expressive Piano Performance: Further Experimental Evidence for the Relevance of Mid-level Perceptual Features

Abstract:Despite recent advances in audio content-based music emotion recognition, a question that remains to be explored is whether an algorithm can reliably discern emotional or expressive qualities between different performances of the same piece. In the present work, we analyze several sets of features on their effectiveness in predicting arousal and valence of six different performances (by six famous pianists) of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1. These features include low-level acoustic features, score-based features, features extracted using a pre-trained emotion model, and Mid-level perceptual features. We compare their predictive power by evaluating them on several experiments designed to test performance-wise or piece-wise variations of emotion. We find that Mid-level features show significant contribution in performance-wise variation of both arousal and valence -- even better than the pre-trained emotion model. Our findings add to the evidence of Mid-level perceptual features being an important representation of musical attributes for several tasks -- specifically, in this case, for capturing the expressive aspects of music that manifest as perceived emotion of a musical performance.
Sight-over-sound judgments of music performances are replicable effects with limited interpretability

Abstract:Virtuosi impress audiences with their musical expressivity and with their theatrical flair. How do listeners use this auditory and visual information to judge performance quality? Both musicians and laypeople report a belief that sound should trump sight in the judgment of music performance, but surprisingly, their actual judgments reflect the opposite pattern. In a recent study, when presented with 6-second videos of music competition performers, listeners accurately guessed the winners only when the videos were muted. Here, we successfully replicate this finding in a highly-powered sample but then demonstrate that the sight-over-sound effect holds only under limited conditions. When using different videos from comparable performances, in a forced-choice task, listeners' judgments were at or below chance. And when differences in performance quality were made clearer, listeners' judgments were most accurate when they could hear the music-without audio, performance was at chance. Sight therefore does not necessarily trump sound in the judgment of music performance.
"Beauty Is How You Feel Inside": Aesthetic Judgments Are Related to Emotional Responses to Contemporary Music

Abstract:While it has extensively been argued that aesthetic categories such as beauty have a direct relationship to emotion, there has only been limited psychological research on the relationship between aesthetic judgments and emotional responses to art. Music is recognized to be an art form that elicits strong emotional responses in listeners and it is therefore pertinent to study empirically how aesthetic judgments relate to emotional responses to music listening. The aim of the presented study is to test for the impact of aesthetic judgment on various psychophysiological response measures of emotion that were assessed in parallel in two contemporary music concerts, each with a different audience and program. In order to induce different levels of aesthetic judgments in participants, we assigned them randomly to one of two groups in a between-subjects design in both concerts: One group attended a talk on the music presented, illustrating its aesthetic value, while the other group attended an unrelated talk on a non-musical topic. During the concerts, we assessed, from 41 participants in Concert 1 (10 males; mean age 23 years) and 53 in Concert 2 (14 males; mean age 24 years), different emotional response components: (a) retrospective rating of emotion; (b) activation of the peripheral nervous system (skin conductance and heart rate); (c) the activity of two facial muscles associated with emotional valence (only Concert 1). Participants listened to live performances of a selection of contemporary music pieces. After each piece, participants rated the music according to a list of commonly discussed aesthetic judgment criteria, all thought to contribute to the perceived aesthetic value of art. While preconcert talks did not significantly impact value judgment ratings, through factor analyses it was found that aesthetic judgments could be grouped into several underlying dimensions representing analytical, semantic, traditional aesthetic, and typicality values. All dimensions where then subsequently shown to be related to subjective and physiological responses to music. The findings reported in this study contribute to understanding the relationship between aesthetic judgment processes and emotional responses to music. The results give further evidence that cognitive-affective interactions have a significant role in processing music stimuli.
Learning expressive percussion performance under different visual feedback conditions

Abstract:A study was conducted to test the effect of two different forms of real-time visual feedback on expressive percussion performance. Conservatory percussion students performed imitations of recorded teacher performances while receiving either high-level feedback on the expressive style of their performances, low-level feedback on the timing and dynamics of the performed notes, or no feedback. The high-level feedback was based on a Bayesian analysis of the performances, while the low-level feedback was based on the raw participant timing and dynamics data. Results indicated that neither form of feedback led to significantly smaller timing and dynamics errors. However, high-level feedback did lead to a higher proficiency in imitating the expressive style of the target performances, as indicated by a probabilistic measure of expressive style. We conclude that, while potentially disruptive to timing processes involved in music performance due to extraneous cognitive load, high-level visual feedback can improve participant imitations of expressive performance features.

Abstract:Critical reviews offer rich data that can be used to investigate how musical experiences are conceptualized by expert listeners. However, these data also present significant challenges in terms of organization, analysis, and interpretation. This study presents a new systematic method for examining written responses to music, tested on a substantial corpus of music criticism. One hundred critical reviews of Beethoven's piano sonata recordings, published in the Gramophone between August 1934 and July 2010, were selected using in-depth data reduction (qualitative/quantitative approach). The texts were then examined using thematic analysis in order to generate a visual descriptive model of expert critical review. This model reveals how the concept of evaluation permeates critical review. It also distinguishes between two types of descriptors. The first characterizes the performance in terms of specific actions or features of the musical sound (musical parameters, technique, and energy); the second appeals to higher-order properties (artistic style, character and emotion, musical structure, communicativeness) or assumed performer qualities (understanding, intentionality, spontaneity, sensibility, control, and care). The new model provides a methodological guide and conceptual basis for future studies of critical review in any genre.

Chopin’s Third Piano Sonata, Op. 58: Late Style, Formal Ambiguity, and Performance Considerations

Abstract:Chopin’s Third Piano Sonata, Op. 58, is the largest solo work of his late period. Chopin’s successful combination of the Classical and the Romantic aesthetic, which is explored in Chapter 1, results in an effective balancing of structural integrity and emotional fulfillment. Every movement of Op. 58 possesses qualities of movements in a traditional sonata cycle; however, the tendency to blend structural elements, the expansion of thematic material, and the postponement of climaxes contribute to Chopin’s distinctive treatment of the sonata genre. The issue of late style in Chopin’s output has recently garnered considerable attention. Most writers focus on particular compositional techniques such as the blending of musical genres and the increasing importance of counterpoint and chromaticism. New expressive elements include manifestations of a dandified aesthetic as well as emotional lassitude. These discussions are primarily related to works in Chopin’s original genres, neglecting somewhat the Third Piano Sonata, Op. 58. The second chapter of this dissertation examines the elements of Chopin’s late style present in Op. 58, emphasizing the sonata’s first three movements. These aspects of late style include blurring of genres, complex use of chromaticism, intricacy of counterpoint, textural and thematic variety, dandified impertinence, emotional lassitude and polyvalence. The employment of late stylistic features within the sonata model results in formal ambiguities, which are particularly manifest in the first movement. Chapter 3 reconsiders the movement’s thematic boundaries and especially evaluates the juncture between development and recapitulation. In Chapter 4, the last movement’s indebtedness to Chopin’s balladic model is examined. The gradual intensification of the primary theme together with the presence of a characterizing theme and dancelike episode suggest a merging of Chopin’s balladic practice with rondo form to create an end-directed hybrid structure. This study not only encourages further research into the implications of Chopin’s late style for his larger forms but also increases the variety of interpretative choices available to performers through awareness of Chopin’s stylistic features. The final chapter suggests how insights into musical structure, style, and genre might inform performances of this sonata and how these possibilities relate to a selection of recorded performances.%%%%DMA

Emotion rendering in music: range and characteristic values of seven musical variables

Abstract:Many studies on the synthesis of emotional expression in music performance have focused on the effect of individual performance variables on perceived emotional quality by making a systematical variation of variables. However, most of the studies have used a predetermined small number of levels for each variable, and the selection of these levels has often been done arbitrarily. The main aim of this research work is to improve upon existing methodologies by taking a synthesis approach. In a production experiment, 20 performers were asked to manipulate values of 7 musical variables simultaneously (tempo, sound level, articulation, phrasing, register, timbre, and attack speed) for communicating 5 different emotional expressions (neutral, happy, scary, peaceful, sad) for each of 4 scores. The scores were compositions communicating four different emotions (happiness, sadness, fear, calmness). Emotional expressions and music scores were presented in combination and in random order for each performer for a total of 5 × 4 stimuli. The experiment allowed for a systematic investigation of the interaction between emotion of each score and intended expressed emotions by performers. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), repeated measures, with factors emotion and score was conducted on the participants' values separately for each of the seven musical factors. There are two main results. The first one is that musical variables were manipulated in the same direction as reported in previous research on emotional expressive music performance. The second one is the identification for each of the five emotions the mean values and ranges of the five musical variables tempo, sound level, articulation, register, and instrument. These values resulted to be independent from the particular score and its emotion. The results presented in this study therefore allow for both the design and control of emotionally expressive computerized musical stimuli that are more ecologically valid than stimuli without performance variations.
Forearm fascial hernia after harvesting the palmaris longus tendon

Abstract:Dear Sir, A 32-year-old male carpenter presented with a painful swelling in the left forearm. The pain was exacerbated by active wrist flexion and prevented him from working. Thirty-three months before visiting our clinic he had undergone ligament reconstruction surgery for lateral collateral ligament insufficiency in the left elbow, using the palmaris longus tendon, which was harvested with a tendon stripper. Approximately 9 months after the operation, he noticed a painful swelling in the left forearm. Physical examination revealed a palpable fascial defect over the flexor-pronator compartment of the mid-forearm. On active wrist flexion, a 3 3 cm firm mass became apparent, corresponding to the fascial defect. A dynamic ultrasound examination demonstrated flexor muscles protruding through the fascial defect. Magnetic resonance images revealed a herniation of the flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) muscle that became more prominent with muscle contraction. Because the symptoms had persisted for 4 months, surgical exploration was undertaken. Under general anaesthesia, a palmar zig-zag skin incision was made over the fascial defect in the forearm. A 3 4 cm fascial defect overlying the belly of FCU was found. Passive wrist flexion caused the muscle belly to protrude through the fascial defect (Fig 1). The defect could not be closed directly and extending the fasciotomy from the proximal edge of the defect proximally was also ineffective in reducing the volume of the herniated muscle belly. The ultimate size of the defect was 6 4 cm. Therefore, we repaired the fascial defect with an onlay graft of fascia lata harvested from the right thigh. The fascia was attached to the adjacent fascia with appropriate tension using 3-0 nylon sutures (Fig 2). There was no protrusion of the muscle belly on passive wrist flexion after the graft. Five months postoperatively, the patient was asymptomatic without evidence of recurrent herniation in the forearm. Postoperative MRI showed no muscle protrusion at the repaired site. Although a large number of symptomatic fascial hernias have been reported in the lower extremities, fascial hernias are extremely rare in the forearm (Golshani et al., 1999; Olch and Watson, 1996; Roberts et al., 1989). As a result there is a possibility of misdiagnosing this lesion in the forearm. The current case resulted from a fascial tear caused by harvesting the palmaris longus tendon using a tendon stripper. Although no other case has been reported, care should be taken to prevent forearm hernia in similar circumstances. In treating fascial hernias, extended fasciotomy has been the most effective operation in the lower extremities. However, in upper extremities, the best operative procedure is still not established. As loss of anatomical integrity may impair the function of herniated muscles, we carried out repair of the defect with a fascia lata onlay graft to restore more normal anatomy and achieved a satisfactory clinical result.

Abstract:The article examines the specifics of the performance chronotope (time-space) of two masterpieces written by outstanding composers-contemporaries, whose lifetime is characterized by a gradual transition from the classical to the romantic style. Its essential characteristics and the significance of their awareness by the pianist-performer in the practice of working at a musical piece are highlighted. The “performance chronotope” is one of the parameters involved in the field of contemporary music-performance interpretation (Nikolaievska, 2020: 144). This publication is related to our previous work, where space-time characteristics of clavier sonatas by D. Scarlatti, С. Ph. E. Bach, J. Haydn, W. A. Mozart, and M. Clementi were revealed from the viewpoint of a piano performer (Tarabanov, 2021). Some parameters of the performance chronotope that have been outlined before – interaction and mutual balance of statics and dynamics, organizing function of performance time in sound musical form, metrorhythmic performance inertia, continuity of space-time and performance prediction (anticipation) – are supplemented by others, such as performance understanding of the form through working at details, and psychological space-time of the performer (as one of the components of the performance chronotope of the work). This is attributable to new interpretative tasks of the pianist in Beethoven’s and Schubert’s Sonatas under consideration. These works have not yet been the subject of analysis from the standpoint of performance chronotope characteristics, which, along with the use of an experimental research method (with the involvement of the author’s experience in concert performance of the considered works10), determined the scientific novelty of the presented study. The results of the study are supposed to be helpful for piano performers in their learning of these works and similar ones. It is especially relevant, because the greatest composer of piano sonatas, Ludwig van Beethoven, is in the spotlight all the time. His so-named “Moonlight” Sonata (op. 27 No. 2) continues to attract new generations of listeners, performers, and researchers (Rosen, 2002; Waltz, 2007; Gordon, 2017, and others). Beethoven’s direct successor, Franz P. Schubert created no less fascinating works in the genre of piano sonata. Among them is the Sonata D. 958 in C minor, where Beethoven’s influence is observed to a great extent. As in the case with concrete musical examples analyzed in the article, the piano performer can realize on practice their own interpretative searches connected with the use of timespace characteristics. In particular, a method of “expanding the performance chronotope” is recommended, which should significantly facilitate the mastering of complicated technical episodes.
