Abstract:Compound specific carbon and deuterium stable isotope values (δ13C and δD) and the relative abundance of mid-chain n-alkanes (Paq) were determined for a series of dominant wetland plants, a surface slough-to-ridge soil transect, and slough and ridge soil cores, to assess historical vegetation successions induced by hydrological modification in an anthropogenically impacted, subtropical wetland, the Florida Everglades, USA. A difference of as much as 3.6 and 130 ‰ in their δ13C and δD values was observed between the two most abundant emergent macrophyte species (Cladium and Eleocharis), respectively. A clear n-alkane δD value depletion (−130 to −167 ‰) and decreasing Paq was observed along the slough-to-ridge soil transect, likely the result of an eco-hydrological transition from slough-to-ridge dominated vegetation (Eleocharis to Cladium). In agreement with the relatively constant Paq values, the lack of significant changes in the δD depth profile for the slough core, suggest a consistent slough type of vegetation composition over time at that location. In contrast, changes of both n-alkane δ13C and δD values for the ridge core, especially after ~1960 AD, coincide with the expected plant successions from historically long hydroperiod (>8 months), slough type plants (Eleocharis, Utricularia, Nymphaea) to present day, shorter hydroperiod (<8 months), ridge type plants (Cladium). These δ13C and δD changes seem to be driven by vegetation shifts associated with hydrological change. The application of the compound-specific stable isotope determinations may strongly complement the biomarker approach for paleo-hydrological assessments in wetland ecosystems.
SOIL RESPIRATION AND NUTRIENT CYCLING IN WOODED COMMUNITIES DEVELOPING IN GRASSLAND

Abstract:Grasslands and savannas worldwide are experiencing increases in woody plant abundance. In the subtropical Rio Grande Plains of southern Texas and northern Mexico, this change in physiognomy typically results in soil C and N accumulation. The extent to which this accumulation is the result of increased C and N inputs vs. decreased losses is not known. To address this issue, we compared soil C and N pools, soil respiration, soil microbial biomass, and potential C and N mineralization and nitrification rates in remnant grassland communities and adjacent woody plant communities known to have developed on grassland within the past 100 years. Mean soil organic C (SOC) and total N pools in the upper 20 cm of the profile were 2× larger in wooded communities (3382 and 273 g/m2 for C and N, respectively) than in remnant grasslands (1737 and 150 g/m2). The larger pool sizes in the wooded communities supported higher annual soil respiration (SR; 745 vs. 611 g C·m−2·yr−1 for woodlands and grasslands, respectively) and greater soil microbial biomass C (444 vs. 311 mg C/kg soil), potential rates of N mineralization (0.9 vs. 0.6 mg N·kg−1·d−1) and nitrification (0.9 vs. 0.4 mg N·kg−1·d−1). However, despite higher SR rates, mean residence time of near‐surface SOC in wooded communities (11 years) exceeded that of remnant grassland communities (6 years). The fact that increased fluxes of soil C and N were accompanied by increases in SOC and N pools and total SOC mean residence time suggests that shifts from grass to woody plant dominance have increased both labile and recalcitrant pools of SOC and total N, the latter to a greater extent than the former. Given the widespread increase in woody plant abundance in drylands in recent history, the observed net increase in soil C storage that potentially accompanies this change could have global implications for C and N cycling and the climate system.

Abstract:Spatio‐temporal heterogeneity in soil water content is recognized as a common phenomenon, but heterogeneity in the hydrogen and oxygen isotope composition of soil water, which can reveal processes of water cycling within soils, has not been well studied. New advances are being driven by measurement approaches allowing sampling with high density in both space and time. Using in situ soil water vapour probe techniques, combined with conventional soil and plant water vacuum distillation extraction, we monitored the hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopic composition of soil and plant waters at paired sites dominated by grasses and Gambel's oak (Quercus gambelii) within a semiarid montane ecosystem over the course of a growing season. We found that sites spaced only 20 m apart had profoundly different soil water isotopic and volumetric conditions. We document patterns of depth‐ and time‐explicit variation in soil water isotopic conditions at these sites and consider mechanisms for the observed heterogeneity. We found that soil water content and isotopic variability were damped under Q. gambelii, perhaps due in part to hydraulic redistribution of deep soil water or groundwater by Q. gambelii in these soils relative to the grass‐dominated site. We also found some support for H isotope discrimination effects during water uptake by Q. gambelii. In this ecosystem, the soil water content was higher than that at the neighbouring Grass site, and thus, 25% more water was available for transpiration by Q. gambelii compared with the Grass site. This work highlights the role of plants in governing soil water variation and demonstrates that they can also strongly influence the isotope ratios of soil water. The resulting fine‐scale heterogeneity has implications for the use of isotope tracers to study soil hydrology and evaporation and transpiration fluxes to improve understanding of water cycling through the soil–plant–atmosphere continuum.

Abstract:Variations in foliar stable carbon isotope signatures (delta C-13) of different plant functional groups (PFGs) and their relationships with environmental factors in China were investigated in this meta-analysis. There were some significant, but small differences in delta C-13 among PFGs categorised by life form (<1 parts per thousand). Trees (-26.78 parts per thousand) and shrubs (-26.89 parts per thousand) had similar mean delta C-13 that were significantly higher than those of herbs (-27.49 parts per thousand). Evergreen shrubs (-25.82 parts per thousand) had significantly higher mean delta C-13 than deciduous shrubs (-26.92 parts per thousand). Perennial herbs (-26.83 parts per thousand) had significantly higher mean delta C-13 than annual herbs (-27.10 parts per thousand). Grasses (-26.46 parts per thousand) had significantly higher mean delta C-13 than forbs (-26.96 parts per thousand). For pooled data, delta C-13 was significantly and negatively correlated with mean annual precipitation (MAP) and mean annual temperature (MAT), while it was significantly and positively correlated with latitude and altitude. There was a threshold value of MAP along the gradients, and delta C-13 did not change significantly with higher rainfall. The delta C-13 of PFGs changed with altitude, suggesting that increases in delta C-13 with altitude cannot be generalised. Differences in delta C-13 between PFGs were generally much <1 parts per thousand and therefore insignificant. In contrast, MAP and MAT had relatively large effects on delta C-13 (more than 4 parts per thousand between extremes). The delta C-13 of some PFGs responded to environmental gradients in the same manner, while their rates of change were significantly different in some cases. This information could help predict potential changes in the distribution of PFGs in response to future climate change.
Carbon-nitrogen isotope coupling of soil organic matter in a karst region under land use change, Southwest China

Abstract:The soil stable carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) isotopes are widely used to indicate C3/C4 vegetation history, N sources and transformation processes, respectively. However, land use change, particularly converting forest into farm land, alters soil organic matter (SOM) sources and processes in soils, resulting in a hard understanding of soil C and N fate. In the present study, soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil organic nitrogen (SON) contents, and their stable isotope compositions (δ13C and δ15N) were determined in the five soil profiles under land use change (i.e., conversion of native forest land into shrub land, grass land, maize field, and paddy land) in Lobo county, Guizhou province, Southwest China. A coupling of 13C and 15N isotope in SOM under land use change was verified whether it could provide more accurate indications of sources and transformation processes.The SOC and SON contents of native forest land at the 0∼20 cm depth were significantly larger than these under other transformed lands. The SOC and SON contents decreased exponentially with increasing soil depth under all land use types, and showed opposite trends with soil pH. The C/N ratios of SOM in the soils under undisturbed native forest decreased from 10 to 7 with increasing soil depth, while an irregular fluctuation along soil profile was shown in other transformed lands. Similarly to the most study in the soils under C3 forest, the δ13C and δ15N values of SOM in the soils under native forest at the 0∼50 cm depth increased with increasing soil depth, with the range of −27.7‰∼−25.7‰ and 6.5‰∼10.0‰, respectively. While decreasing trends of them in the soils below 50 cm depth were attributed to the mixing of 13C and 15N-depleted organic matters from bedrocks. However, the δ13C and δ15N values of SOM along the soil profiles under other transformed lands were intensively irregularly fluctuated between −29.1‰ and −19.0‰, 1.2‰ and 7.9‰, respectively. The single δ13C and δ15N signals in the soil profiles of transformed lands indeed revealed the alterations of historical C3/C4 composition and N transformation processes after land use change, but these indications were not specific. The result of the coupling of 13C and 15N isotope under native forest land reveals a positive relationship between them, which associated with full plant-absorption against 15N-depleted inorganic nitrogen derived from SOM mineralization. This study suggests that the coupling of CN isotope fractionation more likely occurs in the C3 forest ecosystem with high N utilization efficiency. However, the replacement of native forest by farm land or grass land will reduce soil N utilization efficiency.

Abstract:Land use change in wetlands leads to significant losses of soil organic matter (SOM). Stable carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) isotopes offer insights into changes in C3/C4 vegetation, SOM sources, and decomposition processes. Yet, predicting the spatial-temporal dynamics of SOM contents and isotopes under land use changes remains challenging. This study delves into the effects of land use changes on soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), delta 13C and delta 15N values, and soil physico-chemical properties and lignin phenols. Our results highlight the significance of soil water content (SWC) in determining the outcomes of land use changes. The conversion of wetland to cropland, forestland and construction land, led to notable reductions in SOC contents (8.71-56.33 %), and TN contents (7.87-37.12 %). Wetland conversion resulted in an enrichment of 13C and 15N abundance, with wetlands exhibiting the lowest delta 13C (-25.57 to -22.89 %o) and delta 15N (2.66 to 6.67 %o) values. A significant correlation occurred between delta 13C and delta 15N values in wetlands, but underwent considerable changes after wetland conversion. Key parameters, including bulk density (BD), C:N, the acid-to-aldehyde of vanillyl ((Ad/Al)v), lignin content (Lambda 8), and total phosphorus (TP), were identified as influencing factors for both SOC and TN contents. When evaluating delta 13C values, the most influential factors included silt, C:N, SOC, sand, and BD. These indicate the importance of soil chemical group (from 41 % to 21 %) in elucidating delta 13C values declined, while lignin group's (from 9 % to 28 %) importance increased from topsoil to subsoil. The acid-to-aldehyde of syringyl ((Ad/Al)s), Lambda 8, C:N, BD and the cinnamyl-to-vanillyl ratio (C/V) were identified as the primary factors influencing delta 15N values, with chemical group accounting for 36 % and lignin group for 48 % in topsoil, while physical group dominated 42 % in subsoil. Our findings underscore the shifts in SOM sources and distinct mechanisms of degradation/preservation of SOM following land use changes.

Abstract:Abstract East African ecosystems have been shaped by long-term socio-ecological–environmental interactions. Although much previous work on human–environment interrelationships have emphasised the negative impacts of human interventions, a growing body of work shows that there have also often been strong beneficial connections between people and ecosystems, especially in savanna environments. However, limited information and understanding of past interactions between humans and ecosystems of periods longer than a century hampers effective management of contemporary environments. Here, we present a late Holocene study of pollen, fern spore, fungal spore, and charcoal analyses from radiocarbon-dated sediment sequences and assess this record against archaeological and historical data to describe socio-ecological changes on the Laikipia Plateau in Rift Valley Province, Kenya. The results suggest a landscape characterised by closed forests between 2268 years before present (cal year BP) and 1615 cal year BP when there was a significant change to a more open woodland/grassland mosaic that continues to prevail across the study area. Increased amounts of charcoal in the sediment are observed for this same period, becoming particularly common from around 900 cal year BP associated with fungal spores commonly linked to the presence of herbivores. It is likely these trends reflect changes in land use management as pastoral populations improved and extended pasture, using fire to eradicate disease-prone habitats. Implications for contemporary land use management are discussed in the light of these findings.

Abstract:PurposeSoil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics are central to understanding the effects of environmental change on the carbon cycle of ecosystems. Vegetation and soil stable carbon isotope composition (δ13C), especially the difference of δ13C between surface soils and source vegetation (Δδ13C), can provide useful information about the SOC dynamics. The variations and patterns of vegetation and soil δ13C and Δδ13C along climatic and edaphic gradients were analyzed to improve the understanding of SOC dynamics in temperate grassland ecosystems.Materials and methodsSoil and plant samples were collected along climatic and edaphic gradients. Meteorological data were extracted from a regional climate database, which was spatially interpolated based on the records at 107 climatic stations located in Inner Mongolia. δ13C, carbon and nitrogen contents of soil and plant, soil pH, soil clay, silt, and sand contents were determined. Δδ13C and soil C:N were calculated. The integrative effects of these factors were further estimated using stepwise regression, redundancy analysis (RDA) and T value biplots.Results and discussionAs expected, soil δ13C was positively related to vegetation δ13C, and higher than the vegetation δ13C. Vegetation and soil δ13C and Δδ13C were all related to growing season precipitation (GSP) and growing season temperature (GST). However, when climatic and edaphic factors were considered together, vegetation δ13C was positively related to GST and soil C:N, soil δ13C was positively related only to GST, and Δδ13C was negatively related only to soil C:N. Unlike previous research conducted at the species level which only included C3 species, GST, instead of precipitation, was the dominant controlling factor of vegetation δ13C.ConclusionsGST influences vegetation δ13C mainly through its effect on relative abundance of C4 plants. Soil C:N rather than climatic factors is the dominant controlling factor of SOC decomposition, and the effects of climatic factors on SOC decomposition are indirect and induced by their effects on soil C:N through influencing species composition and plant C:N. Measuring vegetation δ13C, soil δ13C, and △δ13C simultaneously is necessary to comprehensively understand how environmental changes influence ecosystem carbon cycles.

Abstract:1. Soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics is crucial for evaluating ecosystem carbon balance and its feedback to climate warming. However, it is difficult to detect statistically significant changes in SOC stock over short-time period due to its large pool size, slow turnover time and huge spatial heterogeneity. Stable isotopic measurements, such as Delta delta C-13 (i.e. the difference of natural abundance of C-13 and C-12 (delta C-13) between surface soils and source plants) and its variations along environmental gradients provide an alternative approach inferring soil carbon dynamics over broad geographical scale. However, current isotopic evidence is primarily derived from temperate and tropical regions, with very limited measurements available in alpine regions. 2. Here, we examined spatial variations of Delta delta C-13 in alpine grasslands on the Tibetan Plateau, using large-scale isotopic measurements obtained from consecutive field samplings. We aimed to test whether previously observed isotopic patterns in temperate and tropical regions still hold true in alpine regions and whether climatic or edaphic variables regulated large-scale patterns of C-13 enrichment between soil and vegetation in alpine ecosystems. 3. Our results showed that topsoil stable carbon isotope composition in alpine steppe and meadow ranged from -26.1 parts per thousand to -19. 7 parts per thousand and from -25.7 parts per thousand to -22.2 parts per thousand, with an average of -23.7 parts per thousand and -24.1 parts per thousand, respectively. As previously observed in temperate forests, soil delta C-13 exhibited linear increases with plant delta C-13 in alpine grasslands. 4. In contrast to earlier findings, our results revealed that edaphic rather than climatic factors regulated spatial variability of the Delta delta C-13 in high-altitude regions. Moreover, edaphic controls over Delta delta C-13 exhibited meaningful differences between alpine steppe and meadow. The Delta delta C-13 exhibited an initial increase and a subsequent decrease with soil carbon content in alpine steppe, but was negatively associated with silt content and carbon: nitrogen ratio in alpine meadow. 5. Our results confirmed the association between the delta C-13 of surface soils and vegetation across contrasting ecosystems, but revealed that edaphic rather than climatic variables were better explanations of C-13 enrichment between soil and vegetation at high altitudes. Changes in soil texture and substrate quality could therefore induce soil carbon dynamics in alpine ecosystems.
Connecting soil organic carbon and root biomass with land-use and vegetation in temperate grassland

Abstract:Soils contain much of Earth's terrestrial organic carbon but are sensitive to land-use. Rangelands are important to carbon dynamics and are among ecosystems most widely impacted by land-use. While common practices like grazing, fire, and tillage affect soil properties directly related to soil carbon dynamics, their magnitude and direction of change vary among ecosystems and with intensity of disturbance. We describe variability in soil organic carbon (SOC) and root biomass--sampled from 0-170 cm and 0-100 cm, respectively--in terms of soil properties, land-use history, current management, and plant community composition using linear regression and multivariate ordination. Despite consistency in average values of SOC and root biomass between our data and data from rangelands worldwide, broad ranges in root biomass and SOC in our data suggest these variables are affected by other site-specific factors. Pastures with a recent history of severe grazing had reduced root biomass and greater bulk density. Ordination suggests greater exotic species richness is associated with lower root biomass but the relationship was not apparent when an invasive species of management concern was specifically tested. We discuss how unexplained variability in belowground properties can complicate measurement and prediction of ecosystem processes such as carbon sequestration.
Carbon isotope trends across a century of herbarium specimens suggest CO2 fertilization of C4 grasses

Abstract:Summary Increasing atmospheric CO2 is changing the dynamics of tropical savanna vegetation. C3 trees and grasses are known to experience CO2 fertilization, whereas responses to CO2 by C4 grasses are more ambiguous. Here, we sample stable carbon isotope trends in herbarium collections of South African C4 and C3 grasses to reconstruct 13C discrimination. We found that C3 grasses showed no trends in 13C discrimination over the past century but that C4 grasses increased their 13C discrimination through time, especially since 1950. These changes were most strongly linked to changes in atmospheric CO2 rather than to trends in rainfall climatology or temperature. Combined with previously published evidence that grass biomass has increased in C4‐dominated savannas, these trends suggest that increasing water‐use efficiency due to CO2 fertilization may be changing C4 plant–water relations. CO2 fertilization of C4 grasses may thus be a neglected pathway for anthropogenic global change in tropical savanna ecosystems.

Variability in Soil and Foliar Stable Carbon and Nitrogen Isotope Compositions in the Winter Rainfall Biomes of South Africa

Abstract:We present the stable carbon and nitrogen isotope compositions of 204 plants and 99 soils from South Africa's Fynbos and Succulent Karoo biomes, from which we assess variability in delta C-13 and delta N-15 within and between the biomes. Higher foliar delta 13C in the Succulent Karoo ( 22.4 +/- 4.7%) primarily reflects a greater abundance of CAM photosynthesis relative to Fynbos ( 25.7 +/- 3.5%). For C3 plants within the Fynbos Biome, there is no statistically significant relationship between delta 13C and climate, suggesting that within the present sampling framework, local-scale variability masks expected climatic controls on C3 plant delta 13C. Soil and foliar d15N are highly variable, but foliar delta 15N is significantly higher in the Succulent Karoo (7.7 +/- 3.9 parts per thousand) compared to the Fynbos (4.4 +/- 3.3 parts per thousand). Soil and foliar delta 15N correlate, with soils 3 +/- 1% more enriched in 15N. Both soil and foliar delta 15N show stronger correlations with climate than delta 13C, and they accord with the previously observed tendency for higher d15N with greater aridity. The relationship between delta 15N and mean annual rainfall is, however, relatively steep (2.4 +/- 0.6 parts per thousand per 100 mm rainfall), potentially implying additional controls on delta 15N variability. These data provide a benchmarking of contemporary isotopic variability, anticipated to support future archaeological, palaeoenvironmental and C and N cycling research.
A 3-Dimensional Study of Delta18o in Atmospheric CO2: Contribution of Different Land Ecosystems

Abstract:Land biospheric carbon exchange associated with respiration and photosynthesis exerts a major control on the oxygen isotope composition (delta(18)O) of atmospheric CO2 especially with respect to the seasonal cycle. In particular, an important feature that requires our attention is the phase of the seasonal cycle of delta(18)O which lags CO2 by one month in the Arctic. We have developed a global parameterization of the land biotic exchange of O-18 in CO2, which has been prescribed in an atmospheric 3-D transport model in order to simulate the global atmospheric distribution of delta(18)O. Furthermore, we have separated in the model the specific contribution of different regions of the globe to the seasonal and latitudinal variation of delta(18)O. The model simulated values are compared in detail with atmospheric observations made at 22 different remote stations. The respective role of respiration vs, photosynthesis in determining the phase and amplitude of the delta(18)O seasonal cycle is also analyzed. Based on a good agreement between our model simulation and the atmospheric observations, we observe that the large seasonal cycle of delta(18)O at high latitudes is mainly due to the respiratory fluxes of all extra-tropical ecosystems while for CO2 the relative contributions of photosynthesis and respiration to the overall seasonal cycle are similar. Geographically, the CO2 exchanges with the northern Siberian ecosystem dominate the delta(18)O seasonality at all remote stations of the northern hemisphere, reflecting the strongly continental climate of that region.

Abstract:Major global change factors, including carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) fertilization, warming, change in precipitation, nitrogen deposition, and land-use change have the potential to significantly affect future stocks of soil organic carbon (SOC). These factors, individually or by interacting with each other, can also trigger positive or negative feedback to the processes affecting the rate of SOC formation or loss. Despite rapid progress in the understanding of carbon (C) cycling processes in the last few decades, much uncertainty remains in our ability to precisely forecast potential changes in SOC stocks in the rapidly changing future world. Stable C isotopes have been extensively used in natural observational studies as well as in laboratory and field experiments that manipulate CO 2 concentration, temperature, moisture, nitrogen fertilization, and vegetation type to understand the complex interactions and feedbacks that result from changing climate, plants and their herbivores, as well as soil microorganisms. Newly developed tools such as compound-specific isotope analysis, nano-SIMS (secondary ion mass spectroscopy), and stable isotope probing (SIP) permit isotope tracing in a specific ecosystem pool into specific C compounds and processes, thus providing in-depth insights into many processes affecting C biogeochemistry. The recent availability of affordable and reliable field-deployable optical isotope monitoring devices has provided researchers with a new set of tools for continuously tracking the 13 C-CO 2 fluxes at the ecosystem level, enabling deeper insights into C biogeochemistry under changing environmental conditions. Despite these great strides, there is a scarcity of review studies that have comprehensively examined the use of C isotopes in studying SOC responses under global change factors. This review highlights recent progress in understanding the effect of major global change factors on SOC fluxes and stocks using selected examples covering scales from plant rhizospheres to geographic regions. Moreover, we discuss the strengths and limitations of current approaches and recent scientific advancements to highlight the new prospects evolving from the exceptional temporal and spatial resolution of stable isotope analysis in studying how global change affects SOC. Finally, we suggest that studies using stable C isotopes are well-poised to focus on identifying how dominant SOC cycling processes respond to environment-specific limiting factors and any thresholds and tipping points that define those relationships.

13C and 15N Isotopic Signatures of Plant-Soil Continuum along a Successional Gradient in Ding-hushan Biosphere Reserve

Abstract:Aims The optimal patterns of plant community for water use and nutrient utilization,the responses of soil carbon and nitrogen tumover processes to forest succession,and the mechanisms of soil organic carbon accumulation,are three critical issues in forest ecosystem study.It is difficult to accurately detect these ecological processes with conventional methodologies in the short term,yet the application of 13C and 15N natural abundance technique may yield important information about these processes.Methods This study was conducted in Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve.We investigated the natural isotopic abundance of both 13C and 15N of plant-soil continuum along a successional gradient from Pinus massoniana forest (PF) to coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest (MF),and monsoon evergreen broad-leaved forest (BF).We also analyzed the correlations of foliar stable carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) and stable nitrogen isotope ratio (δ15N) with foliar elemental contents and the variations of soil δ13C and δ15N along soil profiles at different successional stages.Important findings A significant positive correlation between foliar δ13C and foliar C:N was observed.In both litter and soil,the δ13C values tended to decrease along the forest succession,with the order as PF ＞ MF ＞ BF.Foliar δ15N was positively correlated with foliar N content.The δ15N values of litter and upper soil (0-10 cm) increased with successional status.Both soil δ13C and δ15N values increased with increasing soil depth at all three forests.Our results imply that 1) trade-off between water use efficiency and nitrogen use efficiency did not necessarily exist in subtropical forests of China;2) the application of isotopic technique could assist understanding of the mechanisms of soil carbon accumulation in subtropical forests,especially in old-grow forests;3) the 15N natural abundance of plant-soil continuum could be a potential indicator of soil nitrogen availability and ecosystem nitrogen saturation status.
Using Multi‐Homolog Plant‐Wax Carbon Isotope Compositions to Reconstruct Tropical Vegetation Types

Abstract:Abstract The stable carbon isotope composition (δ 13 C) of plant components such as plant wax biomarkers is an important tool for reconstructing past vegetation. Plant wax δ 13 C is mainly controlled by photosynthetic pathways, allowing for the differentiation of C 4 tropical grasses and C 3 forests. Proxy interpretations are however complicated by additional factors such as aridity, vegetation density, elevation, and the considerable δ 13 C variability found among C 3 plant species. Moreover, studies on plant wax δ 13 C in tropical soils and plants have focused on Africa, while structurally different South American savannas, shrublands and rainforests remain understudied. Here, we analyze the δ 13 C composition of long‐chain n‐ alkanes and fatty acids from tropical South American soils and leaf litter to assess the isotopic variability in each vegetation type and to investigate the influence of climatic features on δ 13 C. Rainforests and open vegetation types show distinct values, with rainforests having a narrow range of low δ 13 C values ( n‐ C 29 alkane: ‰ ; Suess‐effect corrected). This allows for the detection of even minor incursions of savanna (δ 13 C n‐ C 29 alkane ‰) into rainforests. While Cerrado savannas and semi‐arid Caatinga shrublands grow under distinctly different climates, they can yield indistinct δ 13 C values for most compounds. Cerrado soils and litter show pronounced isotopic spreads between the n‐ C 33 and n‐ C 29 alkanes, while Caatinga shrublands show consistent values across the two homologs, thereby enabling the differentiation of these vegetation types. The same multi‐homolog isotope analysis can be extended to differentiate African shrublands from savannas.

Abstract:The LPJ terrestrial carbon isotope model, which includes isotopic fractionation of C-13 during assimilation and a full description of the isotopic terrestrial carbon cycle, has been used to calculate the atmosphere-biosphere exchange flux of CO2 and its delta C-13 for the years 1901 to 1998. A transient, spatially explicit data set of C-4 crops and tropical C-4 pastures has been compiled. In combination with a land use scheme this allows the analysis of the impact of land use conversion of C-3 ecosystems to C-4 cultivation, besides climate, fire disturbances, atmospheric CO2 and the isotope ratio of atmospheric CO2, on the terrestrial carbon stable isotope composition. Globally averaged values of modeled leaf discrimination vary between 17.9 parts per thousand and 17.0 parts per thousand depending on the chosen land use scheme and also the year of the simulation. Results from the simulation experiment prescribing the conversion of C-3 ecosystems into C-4 crops and C-4 pastures show the lowest leaf discrimination. Modeled values of isotopic disequilibrium flux, caused by the delta C-13 difference between fixed CO2 and released CO2, similarly depend on the amount of prescribed C-4 vegetation and vary between 37.9 Pg C parts per thousand yr(-1) and 23.9 Pg C parts per thousand yr(-1) averaged over the years 1985 to 1995. In addition, the effect of fire on the isotopic disequilibrium has been diagnosed; generally wildfires lead to a disequilibrium reduction of approximate to 10 Pg C parts per thousand yr(-1) because they shorten the turnover time of terrestrial carbon. If used in a global double deconvolution study, the differences in the results between the standard experiment without any C-4 cultivation and the experiment including C-4 crops and pastures could account for a shift of about 1 Pg C yr(-1) from the inferred terrestrial sources to the ocean fluxes.
Regional differences in soil stable isotopes and vibrational features at depth in three California grasslands

Abstract:There are major gaps in our understanding of how Mediterranean ecosystems will respond to anticipated changes in precipitation. In particular, limited data exists on the response of deep soil carbon dynamics to changes in climate. In this study we wanted to examine carbon and nitrogen dynamics between topsoils and subsoils along a precipitation gradient of California grasslands. We focused on organic matter composition across three California grassland sites, from a dry and hot regime (~ 300 mm precipitation; MAT: 14.6 ) to a wet, cool regime (~ 2160 mm precipitation/year; MAT: 11.7 ). We determined changes in total elemental concentrations of soil carbon and nitrogen, stable isotope composition (δ 13 C, δ 15 N), and composition of soil organic matter (SOM) as measured through Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transformed Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) to 1 m soil depth. We measured carbon persistence in soil organic matter (SOM) based on beta ( ), a parameter based on the slope of carbon isotope composition across depth and proxy for turnover. Further, we examined the relationship between δ 15 N and C:N values to infer SOM's degree of microbial processing. As expected, we measured the greatest carbon stock at the surface of our wettest site, but carbon stocks in subsoils converged at Angelo and Sedgwick, the wettest and driest sites, respectively. Soils at depth (> 30 cm) at the wettest site, Angelo, had the lowest C:N and highest δ 15 N values with the greatest proportion of simple plant-derived organic matter according to DRIFTS. These results suggest differing stabilization mechanisms of organic matter at depth across our study sites. We infer that the greatest stability was conferred by associations with reactive minerals at depth in our wettest site. In contrast, organic matter at our driest site, Sedgwick, was subject to the most microbial processing. Results from this study demonstrate that precipitation patterns have important implications for deep soil carbon storage, composition, and stability.

Abstract:Abstract Background Studies of the African savannas have used national parks to test ecological theories of natural ecosystems, including equilibrium, non-equilibrium, complex adaptive systems, and the role of top-down and bottom-up physical and biotic forces. Most such studies have excluded the impact of pastoralists in shaping grassland ecosystems and, over the last half century, the growing human impact on the world’s rangelands. The mounting human impact calls for selecting indicators and integrated monitoring methods able to track ecosystem changes and the role of natural and human agencies. Our study draws on five decades of monitoring the Amboseli landscape in southern Kenya to document the declining role of natural agencies in shaping plant ecology with rising human impact. Results We show that plant diversity and productivity have declined, biomass turnover has increased in response to a downsizing of mean plant size, and that ecological resilience has declined with the rising probability of extreme shortfalls in pasture production. The signature of rainfall and physical agencies in driving ecosystem properties has decreased sharply with growing human impact. We compare the Amboseli findings to the long-term studies of Kruger and Serengeti national parks to show that the human influence, whether by design or default, is increasingly shaping the ecology of savanna ecosystems. We look at the findings in the larger perspective of human impact on African grasslands and the world rangelands, in general, and discuss the implications for ecosystem theory and conservation policy and management. Conclusions The Amboseli study shows the value of using long-term integrated ecological monitoring to track the spatial and temporal changes in the species composition, structure, and function of rangeland ecosystems and the role of natural and human agencies in the process of change. The study echoes the widespread changes underway across African savannas and world’s rangelands, concluding that some level of ecosystem management is needed to prevent land degradation and the erosion of ecological function, services, and resilience. Despite the weak application of ecological theory to conservation management, a plant trait-based approach is shown to be useful in explaining the macroecological changes underway.
