Abstract:Objectives This study quantified blood bicarbonate (HCO 3 ̄ ) kinetics and gastrointestinal (GI) upset to determine the gender-related ergogenic potential of sodium bicarbonate (SB; 0.15- [ LOW ], 0.25- [ MEDIUM ] and 0.35 g SB ∙ kg Fat-free mass(FFM) −1 [ HIGH ]) in high-intensity functional training (HIFT)-trained athletes. Design Double-blind randomized placebo (PLA)-controlled crossover. Methods Thirty HIFT-trained female ( n = 14) and male ( n = 16) athletes performed two bouts of the Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAnT PRE-HIFT and WAnT POST-HIFT ) interspaced with two 3-min bouts of Wall Balls and Burpees (HIFT performance) 120 min after ingestion of three SB doses established relative to FFM: LOW , MEDIUM , HIGH , and PLA . Blood HCO 3 ̄ was determined pre-ingestion; after supplementation and before exercise at: 30-, 60-, 90-, 105-, and 120 min post-ingestion; and at: 3-, 15-, and 45 min post-exercise. GI upset was evaluated 120 min post-ingestion. Control ( CTRL ) measurements (no supplementation) were performed. Results There were a significant gender x treatment interactions for: changes in blood HCO 3 ̄ at 60 min post-ingestion ( p = 0.014; η 2 p = 0.104; at 0.15 g SB ∙ kg FFM −1 males experienced higher increase than females); PP ( p = 0.015; η 2 p = 0.103) and AP ( p = 0.005; η 2 p = 0.124) during WAnT POST-HIFT , and changes in PP between WAnTs bouts ( p = 0.049; η 2 p = 0.081). SB compared to PLA had no significant impact on Wall Balls and Burpees performance. The dose of 0.35 g SB ∙ kg FFM −1 resulted in higher less severe GI symptoms compared to CTRL and 0.15 g SB ∙ kg FFM −1 ( p = 0.001; W = 0.178); and higher total GI compared to CTRL , PLA and 0.15 g SB ∙ kg FFM −1 ( p < 0.001; W = 0.323). Conclusions This study indicated dose- and gender-related differences in extracellular buffering capacity and ergogenic potential of SB. The study suggested a detrimental impact of GI upset on performance.
