Abstract:The study aims to identify the current trends, gaps, and research opportunities in research pertaining to the disruptive field of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in supply chain management (SCM). Since SCM represents managerial innovation due to its new way of integrated system thinking, SCM has emerged as one of the most fruitful business disciplines for AI applications. The study utilises bibliometric review in tracing the evolution of AI research in SCM and further synthesises decades of past AI research efforts to develop viable solutions for various supply chain problems and then proposes promising future research themes that would enrich supply chain decision-aid tools. The study identified five main research clusters through scholarly network and content analysis. The identified themes were: (a) supply chain network design (SCND), (b) supplier selection, (c) inventory planning, (d) demand planning, and (e) green supply chain management. As the role of AI in SCM continues to grow, there is a growing need for exploiting AI as a way to add value to supply chain process. The study proposes a research framework which will help academicians and practitioners in identifying current research patterns of AI in SCM.

Abstract:Today's supply chains are very different from those of just a few years ago, and they continue to evolve within an extremely competitive economy. Dynamic supply chain processes require a technology that can cope with their increasing complexity. In recent years, several functional supply chain applications based on artificial intelligence (AI) have emerged, yet very few studies have addressed the applications of AI in supply chain processes. Machine learning, natural language processing, and robotics are all potential enablers of supply chain transformation. Aware of the potential advantages of AI implementation in supply chains and of the paucity of work done regarding it, we explore what researchers have done so far with respect to AI and what needs further exploration. We reviewed 136 research papers published between 1996 and 2020 from the Scopus database and provided a classification of the research material according to four critical structural dimensions (level of analytics, AI algorithms or techniques, sector or industry of application, and supply chain processes). This study is the first attempt to study the AI applications in SC from a process perspective and provides a decisional framework for adequate use of AI techniques in the different SC processes.

Abstract:<span>With the development and evolution of information technology, competition has become more and more intensive on a global scale. Many companies have forecast that the future of operation and supply chain management (SCM) may change dramatically, from planning, scheduling, optimisation, to transportation, with the presence of artificial intelligence (AI). People will be more and more interested in machine learning, AI, and other intelligent technologies, in terms of SCM. Within this context, this particular research study provides an overview of the concept of AI and SCM. It then focuses on timely and critical analysis of AI-driven supply chain research and applications. In this exploratory research, the emerging AI-based business models of different case companies are analysed. Their relevant AI solutions and related values to companies are also evaluated. As a result, this research identifies several areas of value creation for the application of AI in the supply chain. It also proposes an approach to designing business models for AI supply chain applications.</span>

Abstract:A well-functioning supply chain is a key to success for every business entity. Having an accurate projection on inventory offers a substantial competitive advantage. There are many internal factors like product introductions, distribution network expansion; and external factors such as weather, extreme seasonality, and changes in customer perception or media coverage that affects the performance of the supply chain. In recent years Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been proved to become an extension of our brain, expanding our cognitive abilities to levels that we never thought would be possible. Though many believe AI will replace humans, it is not true, rather it will help us to unleash our true strategic and creative potential. AI consists of a set of computational technologies developed to sense, learn, reason, and act appropriately. With the technological advancement in mobile computing, the capacity to store huge data on the internet, cloud-based machine learning and information processing algorithms etc. AI has been integrated into many sectors of business and been proved to reduce costs, increase revenue, and enhance asset utilization. AI is helping businesses to get almost 100% accurate projection and forecast the customer demand, optimizing their R&D and increase manufacturing with lower cost and higher quality, helping them in the promotion (identifying target customers, demography, defining the price, and designing the right message, etc.) and providing their customers a better experience. These four areas of value creation are extremely important for gaining competitive advantage. Supply-chain leaders use AI-powered technologies to a) make efficient designs to eliminate waste b) real-time monitoring and error-free production and c) facilitate lower process cycle times. These processes are crucial in bringing Innovation faster to the market.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize various aspects of business operations. AI can be used to analyze data and make predictions about demand, optimize logistics and transportation routes, and identify inefficiencies in the supply chain. This can lead to improved responsiveness to changes in demand, reduced lead times, and lower costs. This paper reviews and analyzes the applications of AI in supply chain management (SCM) using the Scopus database. The objective is to address the current research gap of AI’s impact on the performance of SCM, determining the AI techniques that can enhance the performance of SCM, the SCM subfields that have high potential to be enhanced by AI, the impact of AI application on the performance of SCM, and how the performance can be described in agile-lean perspective. Scopus database was utilized to outline and identify the active countries/regions in the field of AI impact on SCM performance, subject area, and type of documents.

Uncertain Supply Chain Management

Abstract:The research aims to investigate the potential impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the digital supply chain in light of extant literature on the Decision-Oriented Information (DOI) theory and the Technology-Oriented Enterprise (TOE) framework. The research further attempts to unpack the strategic implications of AI integration in supply chain management, and its association with operational excellence and business model innovation. The study is exploratory and employs a mixed-methods approach. We develop propositions that examine the decision-making processes within AI-enhanced supply chains based on an analysis of concepts central to the DOI theory. We also employ the TOE framework to develop further propositions regarding the technological infrastructure required for AI implementation. Empirical case studies encompassing AI applications in different industries (e.g. manufacturing, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals) are presented to gain a broad perspective of the impact of AI on the digital supply chain. AI technologies inherently make supply chains more agile, transparent, and responsive. Machine Learning algorithms allow for more accurate forecasting and demand management under conditions of supply chain risk and volatility. Robotics and automation, allow for greater flexibility and efficiency in executing operations and logistics. Additionally, the successful implementation of AI is heavily contingent on the organization's current level of technological infrastructure and its alignment with its current and future business objectives. Furthermore, the DOI theory and TOE framework may serve as a blueprint for how one could evaluate AI implementation beyond the scope of supply chain management.

Firstly, the current research status of artificial intelligence technology application in the field of supply chain logistics is reviewed, and then artificial intelligence’s technical architecture is introduced. On this basis, the basic conditions for applying artificial intelligence technology in the field of supply chain logistics are analyzed. Then, this study focuses on the logistics field of typical supply chain, constructs the main application models of artificial intelligence technology in this field, formulates the application implementation path of artificial intelligence technology, proposes application implementation strategies and steps, and provides reference for enterprises to promote the intelligent development of supply chain logistics and improve supply chain management performance.

Abstract:Differentiated production and supply chain management (SCM) areas benefit from the IoT, Big Data, and the data-management capabilities of the AI paradigm. Many businesses have wondered how the arrival of AI will affect planning, organization, optimization, and logistics in the context of SCM. Information symmetry is very important here, as maintaining consistency between output and the supply chain is aided by processing and drawing insights from big data. We consider continuous (production) and discontinuous (supply chain) data to satisfy delivery needs to solve the shortage problem. Despite a surplus of output, this article addresses the voluptuous deficiency problem in supply chain administration. This research serves as an overview of AI for SCM practitioners. The report then moves into an in-depth analysis of the most recent studies on and applications of AI in the supply chain industry. This work introduces a novel approach, Incessant Data Processing (IDP), for handling harmonized data on both ends, which should reduce the risk of incorrect results. This processing technique detects shifts in the data stream and uses them to predict future suppressions of demand. Federated learning gathers and analyzes information at several points in the supply chain and is used to spot the shifts. The learning model is educated to forecast further supply chain actions in response to spikes and dips in demand. The entire procedure is simulated using IoT calculations and collected data. An improved prediction accuracy of 9.93%, a reduced analysis time of 9.19%, a reduced data error of 9.77%, and increased alterations of 10.62% are the results of the suggested method.

Abstract:Supply chain risk management (SCRM) encompasses a wide variety of strategies aiming to identify, assess, mitigate and monitor unexpected events or conditions which might have an impact, mostly adverse, on any part of a supply chain. SCRM strategies often depend on rapid and adaptive decision-making based on potentially large, multidimensional data sources. These characteristics make SCRM a suitable application area for artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of supply chain literature that addresses problems relevant to SCRM using approaches that fall within the AI spectrum. To that end, an investigation is conducted on the various definitions and classifications of supply chain risk and related notions such as uncertainty. Then, a mapping study is performed to categorise existing literature according to the AI methodology used, ranging from mathematical programming to Machine Learning and Big Data Analytics, and the specific SCRM task they address (identification, assessment or response). Finally, a comprehensive analysis of each category is provided to identify missing aspects and unexplored areas and propose directions for future research at the confluence of SCRM and AI.

Abstract:We have witnessed unparalleled progress in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) applications in the last two decades. The AI technologies have accelerated advancements in robotics and automation, which have significant implications on almost every aspect of businesses, and especially supply chain operations. Supply chains have widely adopted smart technologies that enable real-time automated data collection, analysis, and prediction. In this study, we review recent applications of AI in operations management (OM) and supply chain management (SCM). Specifically, we consider the innovations in healthcare, manufacturing, and retail operations, since collectively, these three areas represent a majority of the AI innovations in business as well as growing problem areas. We discuss primary challenges and opportunities for utilizing AI in those industries. We also discuss trending research topics with significant value potential in these areas.

One of the most prominent of these technologies (including Block Chain, Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, Big Data, etc.) is Artificial Intelligence (AI), was introduced to develop and create “thinking machines” that are capable of mimicking, learning, and replacing human intelligence. However, its widespread acceptance as a decision-aid tool, AI has seen limited application in supply chain management (SCM). The purpose of this work is to identify the contributions of AI to SCM through a brief review of the existing literature. Besides, this paper reviews the past record of success in AI applications to SCM and identifies the most subfields of SCM in which to apply AI.

The findings of this study demonstrate how AI, ML, and DS can revolutionize supply chain management by enhancing decision-making, boosting visibility, and lowering costs. However, overcoming key obstacles including data quality, integration, and privacy concerns is necessary for the effective deployment of these technologies. Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has been a key driver to reduce operational uncertainty and improve performance in supply chain management. Due to the advent of new data gathering technologies (IoT) and greater storage capacity, big data analytics (BDA) is rapidly growing as one of the main fields within AI research. We examined a representative sample of AI works applied to SCM from 2000 to 2020 and analysed them considering the main areas of the SCOR model framework of operations. The systematic literature review was based on a meta-synthesis methodology. The main research questions addressed were: 1) What are the main research methodologies used in AI SCM literature? 2) In what areas of SCM operations is AI (including BDA) mostly applied? 3) What are the most used AI models? The discussion addressing these three questions reveals a number of research gaps, which leads to future research directions.

Abstract:In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has become an important driving force for the development of large enterprise supply chain technology. Through machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision and other technologies, AI can help enterprises improve the efficiency and reliability of supply chains. This article analyzes the impact of AI on the development of large enterprise supply chain technologies and explores its applications in data analysis and forecasting, planning and scheduling, automation and robotics technologies, risk management and anti-fraud for supply chain management. The results show that AI has huge potential to improve the efficiency, transparency and security of large enterprise supply chains. It can help enterprises more accurately analyze massive amounts of supply chain data, predict potential problems, optimize planning and scheduling, improve automation levels with robots, and strengthen risk oversight and fraud prevention through technologies like machine vision.
