Abstract:This study delves into the role of Chinese TV variety shows in revitalizing traditional culture by catering to both elite and popular preferences. The paper scrutinizes the theoretical discourse on high versus popular culture, suggesting that television art has obscured these distinctions, fostering cultural harmony. Chinese TV variety programs have innovatively incorporated traditional cultural elements like poetry, painting, heritage sites, intangible cultural heritage, and culinary arts, repackaging them in accessible modern formats to captivate both discerning and broad audiences. This approach has not only cultivated public esteem for traditional culture, invigorated cultural memory and self-assurance, but also profoundly influenced cultural identity. It demonstrates the impactful role of merging elite aesthetics with mass entertainment in rejuvenating traditional culture and enhancing the audience’s cultural understanding and engagement.
