Abstract:This research aims to highlight the importance of diverse forms of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as strengthening elements in epoxy composites. It explores the influence of three different forms of g-C3N4 and their concentrations on the mechanical properties of the epoxy composites. Various characterization techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), were utilized to comprehend the effects of g-C3N4 morphology and particle size on the physical and chemical characteristics of epoxy resin. Mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, strain, modulus, and fracture toughness, were determined for the composite samples. SEM analysis was performed to examine crack morphology in samples with different reinforcements. Findings indicate that optimal mechanical properties were achieved with a 0.5 wt% bulk g-C3N4 filler, enhancing tensile strength by 14%. SEM micrographs of fracture surfaces revealed a transition from brittle to rough morphology, suggesting increased toughness in the composites. While the TGA results showed no significant impact on degradation temperature, dynamic mechanical analysis demonstrated a 17% increase in glass transition temperature. Furthermore, the improvement in thermal breakdown up to 600 °C was attributed to reinforced covalent bonds between carbon and nitrogen, supported by FTIR results.
Characterization of the flexural behavior of a reactive graphitic nanofibers reinforced epoxy using a non-linear damage model

Abstract:In our previous work, a nano-epoxy was developed based on the preparation of reactive graphitic nanofibers (r-GNFs). The objective of this work is to study the effect of the r-GNFs in an epoxy resin on the mechanical properties of the resulting nano-epoxy composites. Three-point bending tests were carried out for the pure epoxy and nano-epoxy materials with 0.15, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5wt% r-GNFs to obtain the flexural behaviors. The nano-epoxy composite containing 0.3wt% of r-GNFs showed the best flexural properties including highest flexural strength, modules and ductility values among all the tested materials. Non-linear fracture mechanics (NLFM) was applied to analyze the phenomena occurred during the bending tests. A non-linear damage model was used to interpret the flexural stress–strain relationships of the tested materials, which showed agreement with the testing results. The fracture surfaces of the nano-epoxy composites were examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the morphological features on the SEM images also reveals that the nano-epoxy composites are tougher than the pure epoxy resin.
In situ preparation of functionalized graphene oxide/epoxy nanocomposites with effective reinforcements

Abstract:In order to obtain homogeneous dispersion and strong filler-matrix interface in epoxy resin, graphene oxide was functionalized via surface modification by hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene and glycidol and then incorporated into epoxy resin to obtain nanocomposites via in situ thermal polymerization. The morphology of nanocomposites was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, implying good dispersion of graphene nano-sheets. The incorporation of functionalized graphene oxide effectively enhanced various property performances of epoxy nanocomposites. The storage modulus of the epoxy nanocomposites was significantly increased by 113% (2% addition) and the hardness was improved by 38% (4% addition). Electrical conductivity was improved by 6.5 orders of magnitude. Enhanced thermal stability was also achieved. This work demonstrates a cost-effective approach to construct a flexible interphase structure, strong interfacial interaction and good dispersion of functionalized graphene in epoxy nanocomposites through a local epoxy-rich environment around graphene oxide sheets, which reinforces the polymer properties and indicates further application in research and industrial areas.

Abstract:The change in characteristics in the microstructural features of epoxy nanocomposites created by reinforcing with graphene oxide (GO) obtained by controlled reduction of GO was investigated. The effects of adding various loadings (0.1-0.5 wt%) of RGO in epoxy resin were examined, with a focus on the material's response toward mechanical and thermal properties. The robust interfacial bonding between epoxy resin and RGO is attributed to the higher surface area of the exfoliated layered geometry of graphene and is a key factor contributing to the enhanced physical properties in nanocomposite. The optimal incorporation of 2D nanofillers has been determined to induce a synergistic effect, thereby establishing a percolating network in thermal interface materials designed for high-performance electronic device.

Abstract:Abstract Graphene oxide (GO) is a versatile material with inherent unique properties that can be used in a wide range of applications. GO is produced from graphitic materials including graphite, and its properties can depend on the nature of stacking in the graphene structures. In this study, GO was prepared from pitch-based graphite fibers via the modified Hummer’s method and subsequently incorporated into an epoxy matrix to obtain graphene-loaded nanocomposites (EP/GO). Presented experimental results revealed that the addition of 0.6 wt% GO yielded an ∼110% increase in the fracture toughness. The corresponding fracture energies as well as the flexural strengths and flexural modulus exhibited similar trends to the fracture toughness. The thermophysical properties of the EP/GO, to further demonstrate the reinforcing effectiveness of GO, were also observed. Collectively, these results indicate that GO investigated in the study can be a viable reinforcement candidate to develop next-generation nanocomposites with multifunctional properties.

Abstract:This study investigates the synergistic effects of graphene oxide (GO) on the woven carbon fiber (CF)-reinforced epoxy composites. The GO nanofiller was incorporated into the epoxy resin with variations in the content, and the CF/epoxy composites were manufactured using a vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding process and then cured at 70 and 120 °C. An analysis of the mechanical properties of the GO (0.2 wt.%)/CF/epoxy composites showed an improvement in the tensile strength, Young’s modulus, toughness, flexural strength and flexural modulus by ~ 34, 20, 83, 55 and 31%, respectively, when compared to the CF/epoxy composite. The dynamic mechanical analysis of the composites exhibited an enhancement of ~ 56, 114 and 22% in the storage modulus, loss modulus and damping capacity (tanδ), respectively, at its glass transition temperature. The fiber–matrix interaction was studied using a Cole–Cole plot analysis.

Abstract:This work investigates the hybrid nanocomposites of graphene nanoparticles (GNPs) and Al2O3 NPs in epoxy resin. The hybrid nanocomposite containing 1.5 wt.% GNPs and 8.5 wt.% Al2O3 NPs shows excellent mechanical properties and thermal stability. This nanocomposite holds promise as a component in structural applications, particularly in automobiles, aerospace components, and sports equipment. This work investigates the hybrid nanocomposites manufactured by direct mixing by dispersing varying weight percentages (wt.%) of graphene nanoparticles (GNPs) and Al2O3 NPs in epoxy resin. Their properties are then obtained using various mechanical (tensile, flexural, impact, and hardness) and thermal (thermogravimetric) analyses. Furthermore, their microstructure and functional groups are studied by SEM and FTIR, respectively. The hybrid nanocomposite, which contains 1.5 wt.% GNPs and 8.5 wt.% Al2O3 NPs, has excellent mechanical properties. Compared to a composite without GNPs, the tensile strength, flexural strength, impact strength, and shore D hardness improve by 95.12, 90.01, 171.43, and 19.75%, respectively. It is also found that hybrid nanocomposite exhibits enhanced thermal stability as GNPs increase, particularly at lower wt.% of Al2O3. The SEM of tensile fractured specimens of GNPs/Al2O3 epoxy hybrid nanocomposites reveals prominent failure mechanisms, including agglomeration of GNPs and debonding between the GNPs/Al2O3 and epoxy. The FTIR spectroscopy analysis reveals distinctive spectral peaks indicating successful incorporation of Al2O3 and GNPs into the epoxy‐based composite, with observed peaks corresponding to functional groups and bonds characteristic of each component. These findings suggest that the manufactured nanocomposite holds promise as a component in structural applications, particularly in automobiles, aerospace components, and sports equipment.

Abstract:Epoxy resins have widespread applications across various industries, such as anticorrosive coatings, owing to their exceptional attributes. However, there is a constant demand for enhancements to their mechanical characteristics to cater to the requirements of unique and specialized conditions. In this work, graphene oxide modified by 4,4′-Oxydianiline (MGO) was prepared using a covalent grafting reaction. The MGO in epoxy resin composites exhibited a rougher morphology and thin layers with a superior tensile strength (38 MPa), elastic modulus (358 MPa), flexural strength (85 MPa), flexural modulus (957 MPa), and hardness (62 HD). The results indicated that the mechanical properties of epoxy resin are significantly improved by MGO and the improved mechanical properties of epoxy resin composites are due to the strong interfacial bonding between MGO and epoxy.

Abstract:A trade-off between enhancement of physical properties of the final part and the processability during manufacturing always exists for the application of nanocarbon materials in thermoset-based composites. For different epoxy resins, this study elaborates the impact of nanocarbon particle type, functionalization, and filler loading on the resulting properties, i.e., rheological, electrical, thermo-mechanical, as well as the fracture toughness in mode I and mode II loading. Therefore, a comprehensive set of carbon nanoparticles, consisting of carbon black (CB), single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), few layer graphene (FLG), and electrochemically expanded graphite (ExG), in purified or functionalized configuration was introduced in various epoxy resins, with different molecular weight distributions. A novel technique to introduce sharp cracks into single-edge notched bending (SENB) fracture toughness specimens led to true values. SWCNT show highest potential for increasing electrical properties without an increase in viscosity. Functionalized MWCNT and planar particles significantly increase the fracture toughness in mode I by a factor of two.

Simultaneously Improved Toughness and Dielectric Properties of Epoxy/Graphite Nanosheet Composites

Abstract:Very thin graphite nanosheets are obtained using an ultrasonic irradiation method, and epoxy/graphite nanosheet composites with different filler content are fabricated using the diglycidylether of bisphenol A epoxy matrix. An investigation of structural characteristics and mechanical and dielectric properties of the nanocomposites is carried out. SEM micrographs shows that the thickness of a single layer graphite nanosheet is about 20 nm whereas FTIR studies indicates that the surfaces of the graphite nanosheets are enriched with hydroxyl and carbonyl groups. The dielectric constants of the composites are increased with increases in graphite nanosheet content lower than 3.5 wt%, and are still higher than 100 in the high frequency range with 3.5 wt% graphite filler content. The tensile strength and storage modulus of the composites increase with increasing nanosheet concentration. These epoxy/graphite nanosheet composites, which show both high dielectric constant and toughness, could have potential application in embedded capacitor technology. POLYM. ENG. Abstract:The influence of surface modifications on the mechanical properties of epoxy-hexagonal boron nitride nanoflake (BNNF) nanocomposites is investigated. Homogeneous distributions of boron nitride nanoflakes in a polymer matrix, preserving intrinsic material properties of boron nitride nanoflakes, is the key to successful composite applications. Here, a method is suggested to obtain noncovalently functionalized BNNFs with 1-pyrenebutyric acid (PBA) molecules and to synthesize epoxy-BNNF nanocomposites with enhanced mechanical properties. The incorporation of noncovalently functionalized BNNFs into epoxy resin yields an elastic modulus of 3.34 GPa, and 71.9 MPa ultimate tensile strength at 0.3 wt%. The toughening enhancement is as high as 107% compared to the value of neat epoxy. The creep strain and the creep compliance of the noncovalently functionalized BNNF nanocomposite is significantly less than the neat epoxy and the nonfunctionalized BNNF nanocomposite. Noncovalent functionalization of BNNFs is effective to increase mechanical properties by strong affinity between the fillers and the matrix.

The functional graphene/epoxy resin composites prepared by novel two-phase extraction towards enhancing mechanical properties and thermal stability

Abstract:Epoxy resins, known for their excellent properties, are widely used thermosetting resins, but their tendency towards brittle fracture limits their applications. This study addresses this issue by preparing graphene oxide via the Hummer method, modifying it with hyperbranched polyamide ester, and reducing it with hydrazine hydrate to obtain functionalized graphene. This functionalized graphene improves compatibility with epoxy resin. Using a novel two-phase extraction method, different ratios of functionalized graphene/epoxy composites were prepared and tested for mechanical properties and thermal stability. The results showed significant improvements: the tensile strength of composites with 0.1 wt% functionalized graphene increased by 77% over pure epoxy resin, flexural strength by 56%, and glass transition temperature by 50°C. These enhancements, attributed to the improved compatibility between graphene and epoxy resin, demonstrate the potential of functionalized graphene to mitigate the brittleness of epoxy resins, expanding their application potential.
Atomistic to Mesoscopic Modelling of Thermophysical Properties of Graphene-Reinforced Epoxy Nanocomposites

Abstract:This research addresses the need for a multiscale model for the determination of the thermophysical properties of nanofiller-enhanced thermoset polymer composites. Specifically, we analyzed the thermophysical properties of an epoxy resin containing bisphenol-A diglyceryl ether (DGEBA) as an epoxy monomer and dicyandiamide (DICY) and diethylene triamine (DETA) as cross-linking agents. The cross-linking process occurs at the atomistic scale through the formation of bonds among the reactive particles within the epoxy and hardener molecules. To derive the interatomic coarse-grained potential for the mesoscopic model and match the density of the material studied through atomic simulations, we employed the iterative Boltzmann inversion method. The newly developed coarse-grained molecular dynamics model effectively reproduces various thermophysical properties of the DGEBA-DICY-DETA resin system. Furthermore, we simulated nanocomposites made of the considered epoxy additivated with graphene nanofillers at the mesoscopic level and verified them against continuum approaches. Our results demonstrate that a moderate amount of nanofillers (up to 2 wt.%) increases the elastic modulus and thermal conductivity of the epoxy resin while decreasing the Poisson's ratio. For the first time, we present a coarse-grained model of DGEBA-DICY-DETA/graphene materials, which can facilitate the design and development of composites with tunable thermophysical properties for a potentially wide range of applications, e.g., automotive, aerospace, biomedical, or energy ones.
Self-networking of graphene in epoxy resin based on thermal induced dynamic chemical network

Abstract:Graphene is widely incorporated into thermosetting resins as a nanofiller to improve the conductive performance of resins for its excellent electrical conductivity. However, the effective dispersion of graphene and the construction of conductive percolation networks in resin matrices cannot be easily achieved due to the strong tendency of graphene to agglomerate and the decreased chain mobility of thermosetting resins during curing. Herein, a conductive DA-epoxy/graphene nanocomposite was prepared with graphene as nanofiller and epoxy resin vitrimer based on dynamic Diels-Alder bond (DA-epoxy) as matrix. The reversible transition of vitrimer from crosslinked networks to uncrosslinked molecular segments under heat treatment enhanced the mobility of both graphene and the epoxy molecular segment, which consequently induced the "self-networking" of graphene to form a conductive percolation network. In the case of DA-epoxy/graphene nanocomposites with 1 wt% graphene contents, the electrical conductivity increased exponentially from 10 −5 S/m before heat treatment to 10 −1 S/m after heat treatment. More interestingly, by taking advantage of the in-situ photothermal conversion of graphene, the formation of conductive percolation networks could be regionally controlled under near infrared light irradiation. Thus, the DA-epoxy/graphene nanocomposites with enhanced mechanical properties and electrical conductivity were facilely prepared without any chemical modifications to graphene.

Abstract:New types of carbon nanomaterials, such as multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and graphene nanoplatelet (GNP), have attracted much attention in enhancing the thermal conductivity of polymers. However, due to the high electric conductivity of carbon materials, it is difficult for carbon‐based epoxy to achieve the high thermal conductivity while obtaining desired dielectric property. In this article, using GNP and MWCNT modified by titanate coupling agent (PN‐105), a novel method for highly thermally conductive, but electrically insulating epoxy nanocomposites is reported. The experimental results show that the 4% modified MWCNTs/epoxy nanocomposite has presented a simple thermal conductivity network, which can significantly improve the thermal conductivity of epoxy resin (EP), about 6.5 times higher than pure epoxy. Co‐filled with 2% GNPs and 4% MWCNTs, the thermal conductivity of the epoxy nanocomposite is increased to 2.04 W/mK, 957% higher than pure epoxy. In addition, the dielectric constant of the composite is 9.1, which is maintained within an acceptable range. The dynamic mechanical results show that the filling of carbon materials can reduce the storage modulus and the loss factor of EP.

Abstract:Outstanding mechanical properties and high thermal conductivity epoxy composites are being developed and are becoming urgent in the electronic and aerospace industries. Boron nitride nanosheet (BN), a nanomaterial with high thermal conductivity, and its epoxy composite adhesive have high thermal conductivity. However, due to its characteristics, the mechanical properties of BN/epoxy will decrease when more BN is added. Therefore, this study graphene platelet and carbon nanotube are selected and packed epoxy/BN composite adhesives to develop adhesives with excellent mechanical properties and thermal conductivity at the same time. In this study, an enhancement effect between a graphene platelet (GnP) and a carbon nanotube (CNT) within an epoxy/BN composite is reported. In the three-phase composite adhesive, the 2 D graphene platelets and 1D carbon nanotubes form a global bearing force network, and the boron nitride nanosheets provide high heat conduction inside the epoxy. They both complement each other in developing thermal conductive and high mechanical energy epoxy composite adhesives. At filler ranging from 0 to 1.0 wt%, epoxy/BN-CNT can improve the fracture toughness (K 1c ), critical stress-energy release rate (G 1c ) and Young's modulus of pure epoxy, are 89, 484, and 67% compared to 52, 286, and 42% in epoxy/BN-GnP composites, respectively. When adding 5.0 wt% of BN-CNT, the epoxy composites' thermal conductivity is up to 0.8 W/m%K, 400% higher than pure epoxy. This article also tested the electrical conductivity of epoxy/BN-CNT and epoxy/BN-GnP composites and found that the electrical conductivity was increased by 12 and 10 orders of magnitude, respectively, and it could be used as an antistatic material. Investigating the enhanced mechanism of epoxy/BN/CNT and epoxy/BN/GnP composites by scanning electron microscopy analysis. Abstract:Thermosets possess diverse physical and chemical properties and thus they are widely used in various applications such as electronic packaging, construction, and automotive industries. However, their poor thermal conductivity and weak mechanical performance jeopardize their continual spread in modern industry. In this study, boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) were employed to promote both mechanical and thermal properties of epoxy nanocomposites. BNNSs and their epoxy nanocomposites were fabricated using in situ solvent ultrasonication and in situ polymerization, respectively. Thermal conductivity was enhanced by 153% increment in epoxy/BNNS nanocomposite at 7 wt% in comparison with neat epoxy. In parallel, Young's modulus, lap shear strength, fracture toughness (K1C) and energy release rate (G1C) increased by 69%, 31%, 122% and 118%, respectively at 1 wt% BNNSs. Moreover, fatigue life and strength of lap shear joints were significantly improved upon adding BNNSs. A numerical model of the single lap shear joint was developed to validate the accuracy of the material constants obtained. Epoxy/BNNS nanocomposites exhibited an outstanding mechanical performance as well as high thermal conductivity giving them merits to widen their applications in electronic and automotive industry.

Abstract:Varying graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) and hexagonal boron nitride (h‐BN) based fillers were integrated to an aerospace grade epoxy resin typically used as matrix to obtain or repair structural parts of aerospace platforms. The three‐roll milling approach was used for this purpose. Five cycles were performed for the mixing while the gap between rollers was 50 μm. Microstructure and thermal properties of the nanocomposites were studied. Moreover, mechanical and transport (electrical as well as thermal) performances were investigated. Results show that certain fillers yield multifunctional properties, that is, enhanced flexural strength by up to 69% in combination with high electrical conductivities with orders of magnitude of approximately 103 Sm and improved thermal conductivities up to 9.3%. For instance, the hybrid nanocomposite sample produced with 0.5 wt% GNP and 0.5 wt% h‐BN added to the epoxy matrix exhibits an electrical conductivity which increased 108 fold, a flexural strength increased by 69% and thermal conductivity increased by 7% in comparison the neat epoxy. Hence, in this study it was demonstrated that these properties can be engineered and tuned effectively for aerospace applications like lightweight avionic chassis which have specific requirements like thermal and electric conductivity which naturally leads to the possible usage of GNP and h‐BN in an epoxy. Correspondingly, presented results are of relevance for novel thermal interface materials with tailored electrical properties.

Abstract:The unique structure and property of K+-modified graphitic carbon nitride (K-CN) nanosheets would be beneficial for developing advanced epoxy nanocomposites. However, the compatibility between K-CN nanosheets and epoxy matrix is a big challenge. In this study, we demonstrate a new and effective method to improve the compatibility of K-CN nanosheets and epoxy by using 1-(oxiran-2-ylmethyl)-1H-indole (IN) as surface modifier through the cation-π interaction between K+ on the surface of K-CN nanosheets and indole group of IN. In addition, the covalent bond between epoxy group of IN and amino group of curing agent could be used to participate in the formation of the epoxy network. When the content of K-CN nanosheets is 0.5 wt%, the tensile strength of prepared epoxy nanocomposites increases by 60.7% and extensibility of prepared epoxy nanocomposites increases by 53.4% compared to neat epoxy resin. In addition, the prepared epoxy nanocomposites are used as efficient reusable photocatalysts for degradation of methylene blue (MB). The efficiency of MB degradation is 98% within 60 min. This work opens up a new avenue to fabricate high-performance epoxy nanocomposites with multifunctional properties for advanced engineering applications.
