Abstract:Non-compliant behaviors have been indicated to be leading indicators of accidents in workplaces. Though most studies treat intentional non-compliant behavior or violations as monolithic indicators for adverse safety performance, non-compliant behaviors might take different forms with distinct motives and outcomes. To examine and compare the effects of different forms of non-compliant safety behavior, we proposed a construct of risk-adjusted non-compliant behavior, which refers to employees' deliberate deviation from safety rules while considering safety concerns and adjusting their behavior accordingly, and investigated the differential antecedent effects by contextual factors and consequential effects on safety outcomes. By a sample of 390 workers and their supervisors in a power grid construction firm, the results of our study indicated that safety climate and transformational leadership were positively associated with safety compliance and negatively associated with violation by multi-level analyses. However, active transactional leadership also had a positive association with risk-adjusted non-compliant behavior, and this association was moderated by safety climate such that the relationship was stronger in higher level of safety climate. Furthermore, although risk-adjusted non-compliant behavior did not significantly affect penalties for deviance compared to violation behavior, it increased the workers' risk perception of hazard. The implications of these findings for theory were discussed.
Measuring the Effects of External Factor on Leadership Safety Behavior: Case Study of Mine Enterprises in China

Abstract:Mining industry is one of the most risky industry in China. There are numbers of accidents attributing to leadership behavior. Leadership safety behavior is viewed as an important factor influencing safety performance of enterprise, and thus it is crucial to identify the factors which could affect leadership safety behavior. The purpose of thesis is to empirically evaluate external factor dimensions and examine the effect of external factor on leadership safety behavior in mining industry context. After interviews and case studies, four survey data collected from nearly 800 respondents working for mines in China were analyzed by two approaches for variable dimension, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. Three dimensions of the external factor were identified, namely: safety management mechanism, safety regulatory practice and safety idea. Then simple linear regression analysis, multiple linear regression analysis and stepwise multiple regression were used to examine the effects of external factor on leadership safety behavior. The results indicate that the effect of external factor on leadership safety behavior is significant and positive; safety idea significantly and positively affects leadership safety behavior, whereas safety regulatory practice and safety management Mechanism have a positive but not significant influence on leadership safety behavior; safety regulatory practice significantly and positively affects safety training and safety policy of leadership safety behavior; safety idea significantly and positively affects safety training, safety management commitment and safety incentive of leadership safety behavior. Leader-member Exchange and Employees’ Safety Behavior: the Moderating Effect of Safety Climate

Abstract:Building on recent work in occupational safety, the present research investigated the relationship between leader-member exchange (LMX) and in-role safety behavior. We predicted that higher quality LMX may produce employees’ stronger motivation for reciprocity, which may lead to not only more extra-role safety behavior [1], but also more in-role safety behavior. Data were collected among work units in a power supplying company in China. Our findings indicated a moderating effect of safety climate on the hypothesized relationship between LMX and safety behavior, so that LMX was positively associated with safety behavior when safety climate was high, while it was negatively associated with safety behavior when safety climate was low. Implications of our findings for social exchange theory and safety management were discussed.

Abstract:The construction industry in China is characterized by higher safety risk, and construction workers' unsafe behaviors are one of the main causes of construction safety accidents, thus, designing scientific mechanisms that motivate and cultivate the construction workers to adopt safety behaviors becomes the key to the construction safety problem. Existing studies have examined some of the factors leading to workers' safety behavior (WSB) at the social, organizational, and individual levels, but ignore investigating the impact of co-workers' guanxi (CWG) on WSB. Thus, this research utilized exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling to examine the impact of CWG on WSB, and the mediating role of group identification (GI) in the relationship between CWG and WSB. Results show that CWG can directly or indirectly influence WSB, GI can exert a partial mediating effect on the relationship between CWG and GI. The research results enrich the research on c guanxi and causation of WSB, and provide a reference for project managers to carry out relationship-related safety management and industry regulations.

Abstract:Compared with traditional onsite construction, prefabricated construction has a more complex working environment, resulting in more safety risks. While cognitive failure has been identified as a primary cause of intentional unsafe behaviors, there remains a lack of knowledge on the formation mechanism underlying intentional unsafe behaviors among workers in precast construction. Using the Theory of Planned Behavior and the risk preference variable, this study constructs a theoretical model for intentional unsafe behaviors of precast construction workers. Data related to precast construction and safety management activities is collected from 208 frontline workers. Structural Equation Modeling is used to test and modify the theoretical model in order to identify the formation mechanism and pathway underlying intentional unsafe behaviors. The findings show that: (1) workers' perceptual behavior control, behavior and attitude, risk preference, and subjective norms influence their intention to engage in unsafe behavior and subsequently lead to intentional unsafe behavior; (2) the effect of personal risk preference on intentional unsafe behaviors is significant, contributing 7.71% to overall intentional unsafe behavior; and (3) the effects of the observed variables are more evident than the initial theoretical model. The most prominent of these are the effects of task intensity (IBC1), safety equipment (IBC2), worker behavior (IOW1), historical behavior (IBC3), and behavioral belief (BAA3). Finally, comprehensive measures to control the intentional unsafe behaviors of precast construction workers are recommended. The results of this study are useful for reducing the occurrence of intentional unsafe behaviors by workers and reducing the incidence of accidents in a complex manufacturing-oriented construction environment.

Abstract:Purpose Unsafe behavior is a major cause of safety accidents, while in most management measures for unsafe behavior, the construction workers are generally managed as a whole. Therefore, this study aims to propose group management of construction workers' unsafe behavior considering individual characteristics. Design/methodology/approach A cognitive process model with ten cognitive factors was constructed based on cognitive safety theory. The questionnaire was developed and validated based on the cognitive model, and the results showed that the questionnaire had good reliability and validity, and the cognitive model fitted well. Latent class analysis was used to classify the unsafe behaviors of construction workers. Findings Four categories of cognitive excellent type, cognitive failure type, no fear type and knowingly offending type were obtained. Workers of cognitive excellent type have good cognitive ability and a small tendency for unsafe behaviors. Workers of cognitive failure type have poor cognitive ability and the potential for cognitive failure in all four cognitive links. Workers of no fear type have weak cognitive ability, and cognitive failure may occur in discovering information and choosing coping links. Workers of knowingly offending type have certain cognitive abilities, but cognitive failure may occur in choosing coping link. Originality/value This study formulates targeted management measures according to the potential characteristics of these four types and provides scientific theoretical support for the personalized management of unsafe behavior.
Study and Action Plan on the Key Factors Influencing Unsafe Behaviors by Construction Workers

Abstract:As front-line workers on construction projects, construction workers have always had the highest accident rate among workers in various industries, a statistic that significantly impacts society. In this study, the 2–4 Model was used to identify 14 influencing factors affecting workers' unsafe behaviors, and a safety management index for construction workers was established. The fuzzy decision-making laboratory analysis method (Fuzzy-DEMATEL) and the interpretative structural model (ISM) were used to analyze the hierarchical structure, internal relations, and key influencing factors behind the unsafe behaviors in question, and the 14 factors affecting them were divided into five dimensions, including the technological environment, insufficient safety knowledge, and the corporate safety culture. The three most direct influencing factors (comprising eight key nodes in the constructed hierarchy) were found to be poor safety awareness, the violation of operating procedures, and skill errors. Therefore, the main paths toward reducing the level of unsafe behavior among construction workers include making changes in process equipment, addressing skill-related errors, ensuring adherence to operating procedures, improving safety awareness, and enhancing safety knowledge. In this study, we identify and classify the factors influencing unsafe behaviors by construction workers and propose scientific interventions with which to prevent the continued occurrence of safety hazards among them.

Abstract:Purpose Construction workers' safety behavior has been proven to be crucial in preventing occupational injuries and improving workplace safety, and organizational safety support provides essential resources to promote such behavior. However, the specific mechanisms of how organizational safety support affects safety behavior have not been thoroughly explored. Therefore, this study explored the relationship between workers' perceived organizational safety support (perceived supervisor/coworker safety support) and safety behavior (safety task/contextual behavior), while considering the mediating effects of safety motivation, emotional exhaustion, and the moderating effect of psychosocial safety climate. Design/methodology/approach Based on the quantitative research method, the hypothesis was tested. The data were collected from 500 construction workers using a structured questionnaire. Observed variables were tested using confirmatory factor analysis, and the path coefficient of fitted model was then analyzed including the associated mediating and moderating effects. Findings The study found that (1) safety support from both supervisors and coworkers directly forecasted both types of safety behavior, (2) safety motivation was primarily predicted by perceived supervisor safety support, and perceived coworker safety support better predicted emotional exhaustion. Safety motivation mediated the relationship between perceived supervisor safety support and safety contextual behavior, and emotional exhaustion mediated the relationship between both types of safety support and both types of safety behavior, (3) psychosocial safety climate moderated the pathway relationships mediated by safety motivation and emotional exhaustion, respectively. Research limitations/implications The samples of this study were mostly immersed in eastern culture and the construction industry, and the cultural and industry diversity of the samples deserves further consideration to enhance the universality of the results. The cross-sectional approach may have some impact on the accuracy of the results. In addition, other potential mediating variables deserve to be explored in future studies. Originality/value This study provides a new basis for extending current theoretical frameworks of organizational safety support and safety behavior by using a moderated mediation model. Some practical insights on construction safety management have also been proposed based on the research findings. It is recommended that practitioners should further raise awareness of the critical role of supervisor-worker and worker-coworker relationships, as high levels of safety support from the supervisor/worker respectively effectively encourage safety motivation, alleviate emotional exhaustion, and thus improve workers' safety performance. Meanwhile, the psychosocial health conditions of workers should also receive further attention.

Abstract:There have been limited studies analyzing the causes of construction workers' unsafe behaviour from the social psychology perspective. Based on a Grounded Theory approach, this study first identified and defined seven coded categories related to workers' dangerous behaviour on construction sites. The original qualitative data were obtained from individual site interviews conducted with 35 construction professionals. These main categories were found connected to workers' status of safety awareness and sense of danger, which affected the type of unsafe behaviours, i.e., proactive, passive, or reactive behaviour. By further integrating social cognitive psychology theories into workers' behavioural decision-making process, the formation mechanism framework and diagram were developed to describe construction workers' unsafe behaviours based on the dynamic process of balancing the individual desires and perceived safety risks. This study advances the body of knowledge in construction safety behavioural management by performing in-depth theoretical analysis regarding workers' internal desires, activated by external scenarios and intervened by a personal safety cognition system, which could result in different motivations and various behavioural outcomes. It is argued that safety cognition serves as a mediated moderation system affecting behavioural performance. Practical suggestions on developing a proper safety management system incorporating safety education in guiding construction workers' site behaviours are presented.

Abstract:Construction workers' unsafe behaviors are closely related to construction safety performance. Most existing studies on construction workers' personality traits and safety behaviors have ignored the flexibility of worker mix at construction sites, the dynamics of workers' behaviors, and the complexity of environmental risks at construction sites. Based on the cognitive process of construction workers' safety behaviors and from the perspective of personality traits, this research establishes an agent-based model of steelworkers' mutual assistance behavior. The AnyLogic platform is adopted to show emerging phenomena in complex problems. Through simulation experiments, the optimized configuration of construction team members under different risk environments can be obtained. This research is conducive to project managers to understand the influence of construction workers' mutual assistance on team safety, assess workers' potential for safe work before recruitment, and carry out active safety management from the source instead of looking for the cause of the accident afterward, making safety management theory more realistic and dynamic.
Causal inference of construction safety management measures towards workers' safety behaviors: A multidimensional perspective

Abstract:Workers' unsafe behaviors are a major contributor to construction accidents. To improve safety behaviors, managers have developed comprehensive management measures. However, due to the complexity of workers' unsafe behaviors, it is difficult to understand the specific impact mechanism of management measures on different types of unsafe behaviors, thus making it difficult to strengthen targeted management efforts. This research aims to uncover the impact mechanism of management measures on workers' safety behaviors from a multidimensional perspective through a novel method of causal inference. A seven-week questionnaire survey was conducted to evaluate the multidimensional performance of managers' and workers' safety behaviors, getting a total of 5,608 valid questionnaires. Change rates and heatmaps were employed to illustrate the improvements and correlations of different management dimensions. Then, the Structural Causal Model-based causal inference was performed to quantitatively analyze the causal effect. The results show that the overall safety behaviors are improved significantly, and the correlations among management measure dimensions are strengthened after the interventions. Furthermore, it indicates that Objectives and Assessments, Safety Organization and Hazard and Emergency Management should be emphasized in the practice of safety management, as they have a continuous impact on workers' safety behaviors. Meanwhile, while some management dimensions are improved, their impact on certain unsafe behaviors is still restricted in terms of stability and pertinence. These research findings contribute to the body of knowledge of construction safety management and benefit relevant practices by revealing the impact mechanism of management measures on workers' safety behaviors in a detailed and comprehensive level.

Psychological decision-making process of construction worker safety behavior: an agent-based simulation approach

Abstract:Objectives. Relationships between safety behavior and its antecedents have been widely studied. However, the psychological decision-making process of construction worker safety behavior (CWSB) is rarely examined from the systematic perspective. Thus, this study constructed the theoretical framework for the decision-making process of CWSB and systematically explored effects of individual factors (education, age and safety knowledge), organizational factors (safety climate and leader-member exchange [LMX]) and psychological factors (psychological capital [PsyCap] and communication competence [CommComp]) on the dynamic performance of CWSB. Methods. Data were collected from the literature and 536 construction workers in China. The theoretical model was tested with the agent-based simulation (ABS) technique. Results. High level of education, safety knowledge, safety climate, LMX, PsyCap and CommComp help to reduce unsafe behavior at the cut-off point. However, the age-safety relationship might present a U-shape, which denotes that reasonable age structure of construction worker groups may be an option for bettering safety performance. The results indicate that the psychological decision-making process of CWSB is not only the result of individual rational decision, but also the product of organizational and psychological impacts. Findings of this study shed lights on safety behavior management practices based on the psychological decision-making process of CWSB.
Group cognitive characteristics of construction Workers' unsafe behaviors from personalized management

Abstract:Unsafe behavior management is an effective way to prevent construction safety accidents. However, unsafe behavior management lacks personalization and needs to incorporate cognitive factors. Therefore, this study explored the group cognitive characteristics of workers' unsafe behaviors under common individual factors. Firstly, the cognitive model of unsafe behavior was validated using structural equation modeling and bootstrap techniques. The results showed a distal mediating between the cognitive processes of unsafe behaviors. Second, the cognitive processes of workers' unsafe behaviors were analyzed using multiple group analysis for three individual factors: age, work experience, and education. The results showed that age is not a significant individual factor in group cognitive characteristics, education and work experience are significant individual factors with group cognitive characteristics of unsafe behavior. Workers with shorter experience are prone to cognitive failure in risk identification, others' influence, self-efficacy, and work skills. Workers with longer experience are prone to cognitive failure in safety awareness, others' pressure, and execution ability. Low-education workers are prone to cognitive failure in risk identification and pursuing energy-saving. High-education workers are prone to cognitive failure in safety awareness, self-efficacy, and work skills. Finally, targeted measures are given for significant individual factors based on group cognitive characteristics of unsafe behavior in order to construct widely used personalized group cognitive management for unsafe behavior.

Abstract:The current study simultaneously examined individual-level and group-level antecedents of employee safety-related outcomes, and the corresponding mediating and moderating effects. Data collected involving 567 employees, 33 work groups in China provided supporting evidences for most of our hypotheses, and qualitative data from interviews added depth to our explanations. At the individual level, general and specific job resources were negatively associated with employee unsafe behaviors and job demands were positively associated with employee unsafe behaviors, through different mediating processes--safety knowledge, safety motivation, and emotional exhaustion. Employee unsafe behaviors further positively predicted employees’ near misses and injuries. At the group level, safety climate negatively predicted employee unsafe behaviors through influencing group-shared unsafe-behavior pattern. In addition, group-shared unsafe-behavior pattern strengthened the relationships between employees’ safety motivation, emotional exhaustion and employee unsafe behaviors.
Understanding the Factors and the Corresponding Interactions That Influence Construction Worker Safety Performance from a Competency-Model-Based Perspective: Evidence from Scaffolders in China

Abstract:Purpose: Construction workers’ reactions to safety-related issues during operation vary from person to person due to their different occupational levels, which can be attributed to various influencing factors and their correspondingly complicated interactions. This research aims to propose an integrated framework to combine the concepts of these factors and provide a holistic interpretation of the interrelationship among them. Methods: Based on items that were mainly extracted from competency theory, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were conducted to identify the critical factors from the data collected from 243 scaffolders on Wuhan Metro construction sites. The interactions among the identified factors were then analyzed, and the safety competency model was thus established with the use of structural equation modeling (SEM). Results: A total of 17 items were identified as critical to workers’ safety competency, and these were further tested and attributed to four factors: (1) individual character and inclination; (2) self-adjustment and adaptability; (3) working attitudes; (4) safety-related operation qualification. Subsequent analysis showed that all the factors significantly contributed to one’s safety competency, and individual character and inclination contributed most to the formation of one’s ability, while the intermediating effects of self-adjustment and adaptability should not be neglected both in theoretical and practical terms. The resultant safety competency model consisting of these four factors was revealed to share a hierarchical structure with the classical competency model. Significance: This study provided an integrated theoretical framework and a set of modeling approaches to combine the related concepts and facilitate a greater understanding of construction safety in terms of workers’ characteristics and behaviors. Practical implications: This study presented a tentative approach for assessing construction workers’ safety competency, as well as emphasized to the managers and professionals the necessity of developing training systems to ensure workers are integrated into a crew in an appropriate and smooth manner. Limitations and Future Work: The volume and the scope of samples impeded the study from achieving a more generalized result and a more cost-efficient data collection approach is in need of development for a comprehensive and in-depth investigation.
Dual-Attitude Decision-Making Processes of Construction Worker Safety Behaviors: A Simulation-Based Approach

Abstract:Workplace accidents are of great concern in the construction industry. Most of those accidents are caused by unsafe behavior in the workplace. Many previous studies have analyzed the causes of workers' unsafe behaviors, but few have investigated workers' feelings of insecurity from the perspective of systematic psychological theory. This study developed an attitude-behavior-intervention feedback loop mechanism of construction workers and used the dual-attitude theory to explain the occurrence mechanisms of unsafe behavior. Using this mechanism, an active-intervention system-dynamics model and a passive-intervention system-dynamics model were designed and simulated. The coefficient of the system dynamics equation in the simulation model involved meta-analysis to combine the correlation coefficients of existing studies, which increased the sample size and improved the statistical test efficiency. The results show that an implicit safety attitude has a more significant impact on safety behavior, and the effect of an active intervention is stronger than that of a passive intervention. Based on these results, this paper presents some feasible suggestions to reduce the probability of unsafe worker behaviors occurring.

Abstract:The frequent occurrence of safety accidents is a global problem, and unsafe behavior is the main cause of accidents, which has been unanimously recognized by academia and industry. However, the previous research on unsafe behavior focused on analyzing the linear effects of variables on the results, and it was difficult to systematically analyze the complex mechanism of the results generated by the coupling of each variable. The problem of how to avoid unsafe behavior of construction workers has not been effectively solved. Based on the configuration perspective, on-site observation is organized, 164 construction workers are taken as case samples, the traditional regression analysis method is abandoned, and the fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis method is used to integrate the theoretical framework of social cognition. From the perspective of psychological cognition and institutional environment, this paper discusses the differential matching of construction workers' safety attitude, safety motivation, institutional control, safety training, and safety climate, and exploring the causal complex mechanisms that improve unsafe behavior among construction workers. The results show that: (1) The unsafe behavior of construction workers is the result of multiple factors. A single influencing factor does not constitute a necessary condition for the unsafe behavior of construction workers; (2) the path leading to the unsafe behavior phenomenon is not unique. Therefore, the high and unsafe behavior configuration of construction workers is summarized as "psychological cognition scarcity type," "institutional environment scarcity type," and "attitude-climate scarcity type"; (3) compared with "psychological cognitive scarcity type" and "institutional environment scarcity type," "attitude-climate scarcity type" is more likely to cause unsafe behavior of construction workers; (4) a lower level of safety attitude or safety climate is more likely to cause high and unsafe behavior of construction workers; and (5) the non-high and unsafe behavior driving mechanism for construction workers is "comprehensive," and there is an asymmetric relationship with the driving mechanism of the unsafe behavior of high construction workers. The research conclusions of this paper can help to broaden the theoretical framework of social cognition and provide new ideas and methods for how to improve unsafe behavior.

Abstract:The unsafe behaviors of construction workers are often the immediate causes of construction accidents, but the underlying causation of such behaviors are not well understood. This research regards the management of construction safety as a system, and seeks to use system dynamics to demonstrate how the system influences construction workers in terms of unsafe behaviors. First, individual and environmental conditions that can lead to an unsafe behavior are identified through a holistic cognitive analysis and management conditions that affect such conditions are identified. Second, a system dynamics model for the causation of unsafe behaviors (SD-CUB) is developed to characterize the causal structure of the system. The SD-CUB model involves relationships among management, individuals, and environmental conditions that can eventually lead to workers' unsafe behaviors. Third, a variety of model tests are conducted to build the confidence of the SD-CUB model. A five-week survey and observation on a building construction project is conducted to demonstrate that the SD-CUB model generates correct patterns of behavior. The model tests also imply that safety and production can actually support each other, management conditions on supervisory level are effective on the improvement of workers' safety awareness, and preventive actions are more effective than reactive actions on the enhancement of safety performance. The SD-CUB model can also be used as a basis for simulation of various site scenarios to explore the best solution to prevent and correct unsafe behaviors, and by redesigning the causal structure, the leverage points and critical management strategies can be determined. Predicting safety behavior in the construction industry: Development and test of an integrative model

Abstract:This study develops and tests an integrative model of construction workers’ safety behavior with an attempt to better understand the mechanisms by which key safety climate factors (i.e., management safety commitment, social support, and production pressure) and individual factors (i.e., safety knowledge and safety motivation) influence workers’ safety behavior. Data were collected from 215 construction workers in New Zealand using a questionnaire. Eight competing models were tested using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results showed that management safety commitment was significantly related to social support and production pressure. Production pressure was identified as a critical factor that has direct and significant effects on safety motivation, safety knowledge, safety participation and safety compliance. Furthermore, social support was found to have the same paths to influence safety behavior as production pressure, except that the effect on safety participation was insignificant. Safety knowledge and safety motivation were significantly and positively related to safety participation. The integrative model suggests a combination of “a safe organization”, “safe groups” and “safe workers” strategies to reduce unsafe behavior on sites.

Owners' Safety Management Behaviors in Construction

Abstract:Owners' safety management behaviors in the construction industry are attracting increasing attention. However, previous research mostly focused on specific safety management practices on construction sites but ignored the influence of safety leadership and safety culture on owners' safety management behaviors. To fill this gap, this study aimed to develop an influencing mechanism involving owners' safety leadership, safety culture, and safety management behaviors. First, a series of interviews and archives studies were conducted in two large real estate developers in China to identify safety management dimensions that can significantly impact construction safety practice. Then, a questionnaire related to owners' safety management behaviors was developed, and the influencing mechanism was empirically tested. The results show that owners' safety leadership and safety culture could directly and positively impact owners' safety management behaviors in the construction industry, and that owners' safety culture could act as a significant mediator in the relationship between safety leadership and safety behavior. These findings can help the academia to advance the understanding of safety management behaviors, and enable the industry to further improve the safety performance of the construction safety.
