Abstract:In this study, we investigated the mechanical properties and microstructures of various micro-regions in 6082-T6 aluminum alloy CMT welded joints, focusing on the softening mechanisms within the heat-affected zone (HAZ) and the weld zone (WZ), specifically identified as softening zones SZ1 and SZ2. And analyzed their impact on the fracture behavior of the joints. The results indicate that the primary cause of the mechanical softening in SZ1 and SZ2 is the dissolution of a significant amount of the strengthening phase β” during the welding process, which notably weakens the precipitation strengthening mechanism in softening zones. However, due to the substantial addition of Mg elements from the filler metal ER5087 into the molten pool, solid solution strengthening in SZ2 is enhanced, reducing the extent of softening compared to SZ1. The tensile fracture of the joint occurs at SZ1, attributable to the weakened mechanisms such as precipitation strengthening and solution strengthening, which decrease the region's ability to impede dislocation movement. Cracks initiate at pits and grain boundaries and grow further along grain boundaries, micropores, and slip bands.
