Abstract:The increasing use of lithium iron phosphate batteries is producing a large number of scrapped lithium iron phosphate batteries. Batteries that are not recycled increase environmental pollution and waste valuable metals so that battery recycling is an important goal. This paper reviews three recycling methods. (i) Hydrometallurgy is characterized by high Li recovery, low energy consumption, safety and environmental protection, but the waste water causes pollution. (ii) Pyrometallurgy is characterized by a simple process, strict temperature and vacuum requirements and the emission of much waste gas. (iii) Direct regeneration provides environmental protection and energy saving, but produces low quality recycled products. Different recycling methods have different technical requirements and produce different economic values. This paper reviews (i) the advance in hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy and direct regeneration, including the process parameters, the recovery rate of Li and the electrochemical properties of the new lithium iron phosphate materials, and (ii) the key issues, challenges and prospects. The paper provides a favorable foundation for further realization of industrial production.
