Abstract:Applying high voltage, ultra-high nickel cathode materials (Li[NixCoyMn1−x−y]O2, 1 ≥ x ≥ 0.88) is significant to develop next generation high-capacity (500 Wh kg−1) lithium metal batteries (LMBs). However, both the cathode and anode face serious interface problems in such batteries. Developing ether-based electrolyte is a comprehensive strategy to stabilize the cathode and anode interface simultaneously. However, the poor oxidation stability of ether and the corrosion of LiFSI on aluminum hinder their practical large-scale application. Here, we have rationally designed a multifunctional 0.05 m 1-Butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium nitrate (DN)/1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME)-based electrolyte with 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluropropyl ether (TTE) diluent. The DN containing imidazole cation can suppress Al corrosion and enhance the oxidation potential of ether-based electrolyte resulting in less solvent decomposition, leading to the formation of inorganic CEI that can improve the thermal stability of ultrahigh nickel cathode; while nitrate, an electron-donating methyl and long Butyl chain can improve the reductive stability of imidazole cation, as well as extra diluent TTE regulates solvation to form a SEI rich in inorganics in anode. Under the synergy of DN additives and TTE solvent, the lean advanced electrolyte enables high loading (4.5 mA h cm−2) Li[Ni0.88Co0.09Mn0.03]O2-based LMBs (N/P = 2.27) to achieve excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention of 88.7 % after 252 cycles. The designed electrolyte extends the advantage of ether-based high concentrated salt electrolyte on the LMBs, providing a novel strategy for stabilizing the high-voltage LMBs with ultrahigh nickel cathode.
