Abstract:Objectives This study aims to present the direction of spatial innovation by confirming the characteristics of digital
space and analyzing actual cases in order to prepare for future education in early childhood education.
Methods To this end, a framework for the analysis of digital spatial innovation in early childhood education was
derived and the best practice cases of early childhood education institutions were analyzed. The digital space innovation
analysis framework developed through previous research consists of five elements: connectivity, creativity,
autonomy, safety, and aesthetics. One national kindergarten, three private kindergartens, and one private
daycare center were selected based on the recommendation of experts, and interviews were conducted with directors
and teachers to investigate the development and operation status of digital spaces. In addition, observations
and photographic data through institutional visits and digital education and space innovation data provided
by institutions were collected and analyzed.
Results The composition and characteristics of the digital space for young children were derived according to the
educational purpose and vision of each institution for early childhood education. The characteristics of the five
cases are as follows: construction of a smart daycare center centered on ecological play, space construction for
Nuri courses using AI-based technology, convergence space between classrooms and digital media by integrating
light and digital, digital environments to improve children's creativity and self-directedness, and flexible connection
environment of AI play⋅smart play⋅online play. Moreover the characteristics of digital space were described
based on connectivity, creativity, autonomy, safety, and aesthetics.
Conclusions Based on the results of the case analysis, three directions were deduced for establishing a digital
space: ‘extending beyond the boundaries’, ‘going digital together in play’, and ‘enhancing children's sensibility and
sociality’. The importance of teacher participation in the process of digital space design, quality verification of safe
and excellent digital devices and contents for young children, digital competency development of early childhood
teachers, and education community building with a focus on young children were suggested.
