Abstract:In this paper we will introduce and give topological properties of a new concept named simplicial distance which is the simplicial analog of the homotopic distance (in the sense of Marcias-Virgos and Mosquera-Lois in their paper [6]). According to our definition of simplicial distance, simplicial complexity is a particular case of this new concept.

Abstract:We review the motivation and fundamental properties of the Hausdorff dimension of metric spaces and illustrate this with a number of examples, some of which are expected and well-known. We also give examples where the Hausdorff dimension has some surprising properties: we construct a set $E\subset\C$ of positive planar measure and with dimension 2 such that each point in $E$ can be joined to $\infty$ by one or several curves in $\C$ such that all curves are disjoint from each other and from $E$, and so that their union has Hausdorff dimension 1. We can even arrange things so that every point in $\C$ which is not on one of these curves is in $E$. These examples have been discovered very recently; they arise quite naturally in the context of complex dynamics, more precisely in the iteration theory of simple maps such as $z\mapsto \pi\sin(z)$.

Abstract:The complex of domains $D(S)$ is a geometric tool with a very rich simplicial structure, it contains the curve complex $C(S)$ as a simplicial subcomplex. In this paper we shall regard it as a metric space, endowed with the metric which makes each simplex Euclidean with edges of length 1, and we shall discuss its coarse geometry. We prove that for every subcomplex $\Delta(S)$ of $D(S)$ which contains the curve complex $C(S)$, the natural simplicial inclusion $C(S) \to \Delta(S)$ is an isometric embedding and a quasi-isometry. We prove that, except a few cases, the arc complex $A(S)$ is quasi-isometric to the subcomplex $P_\partial(S)$ of $D(S)$ spanned by the vertices which are peripheral pair of pants, and we prove that the simplicial inclusion $P_\partial(S) \to D(S)$ is a quasi-isometric embedding if and only if $S$ has genus 0. We then apply these results to the arc and curve complex $AC(S)$. We give a new proof of the fact that $AC(S)$ is quasi-isometric to $C(S)$, and we discuss the metric properties of the simplicial inclusion $A(S) \to AC(S)$.

Abstract:In this study, we delve into the discrete TC of surjective simplicial fibrations, aiming to unravel the interplay between topological complexity, discrete geometric structures, and computational efficiency. Moreover, we examine the properties of the discrete TC number in higher dimensions and its relationship with scat. We also touch on the basic properties of the notion of higher contiguity distance, and show that it is possible to consider discrete TC computations in a simpler sense.

Abstract:We construct new geometric realizations of simplicial and pre-simplicial sets where the standard $n$-simplex, viewed as the space of probability measures on $n+1$ elements, is replaced by the space of $(n+1)$-valued random variables, with the topology of probability convergence. We prove that the map which associates to a random variable its probability law is an homotopy equivalence from these new geometric realizations to the classical ones. Finally, we prove that this realization provides a new Quillen equivalence between simplicial sets and topological spaces.
A cohomology-based Gromov-Hausdorff metric approach for quantifying molecular similarity

Abstract:We introduce, for the first time, a cohomology-based Gromov-Hausdorff ultrametric method to analyze 1-dimensional and higher-dimensional (co)homology groups, focusing on loops, voids, and higher-dimensional cavity structures in simplicial complexes, to address typical clustering questions arising in molecular data analysis. The Gromov-Hausdorff distance quantifies the dissimilarity between two metric spaces. In this framework, molecules are represented as simplicial complexes, and their cohomology vector spaces are computed to capture intrinsic topological invariants encoding loop and cavity structures. These vector spaces are equipped with a suitable distance measure, enabling the computation of the Gromov-Hausdorff ultrametric to evaluate structural dissimilarities. We demonstrate the methodology using organic-inorganic halide perovskite (OIHP) structures. The results highlight the effectiveness of this approach in clustering various molecular structures. By incorporating geometric information, our method provides deeper insights compared to traditional persistent homology techniques.

Barr-coexactness for metric compact Hausdorff spaces

Abstract:Compact metric spaces form an important class of metric spaces, but the category that they define lacks many important properties such as completeness and cocompleteness. In recent studies of "metric domain theory" and Stone-type dualities, the more general notion of a (separated) metric compact Hausdorff space emerged as a metric counterpart of Nachbin's compact ordered spaces. Roughly speaking, a metric compact Hausdorff space is a metric space equipped with a \emph{compatible} compact Hausdorff topology (which does not need to be the induced topology). These spaces maintain many important features of compact metric spaces, and, notably, the resulting category is much better behaved. Moreover, one can use inspiration from the theory of Nachbin's compact ordered spaces to solve problems for metric structures. In this paper we continue this line of research: in the category of separated metric compact Hausdorff spaces we characterise the regular monomorphisms as the embeddings and the epimorphisms as the surjective morphisms. Moreover, we show that epimorphisms out of an object $X$ can be encoded internally on $X$ by their kernel metrics, which are characterised as the continuous metrics below the metric on $X$; this gives a convenient way to represent quotient objects. Finally, as the main result, we prove that its dual category has an algebraic flavour: it is Barr-exact. While we show that it cannot be a variety of finitary algebras, it remains open whether it is an infinitary variety.

Abstract:The notion of Laplacian of a graph can be generalized to simplicial complexes and hypergraphs, and contains information on the topology of these structures. Even for a graph, the consideration of associated simplicial complexes is interesting to understand its shape. Whereas the Laplacian of a graph has a simple probabilistic interpretation as the generator of a continuous time Markov chain on the graph, things are not so direct when considering simplicial complexes. We define here new Markov chains on simplicial complexes. For a given order~$k$, the state space is the set of $k$-cycles that are chains of $k$-simplexes with null boundary. This new framework is a natural generalization of the canonical Markov chains on graphs. We show that the generator of our Markov chain is the upper Laplacian defined in the context of algebraic topology for discrete structure. We establish several key properties of this new process: in particular, when the number of vertices is finite, the Markov chain is positive recurrent. This result is not trivial, since the cycles can loop over themselves an unbounded number of times. We study the diffusive limits when the simplicial complexes under scrutiny are a sequence of ever refining triangulations of the flat torus. Using the analogy between singular and Hodge homologies, we express this limit as valued in the set of currents. The proof of tightness and the identification of the limiting martingale problem make use of the flat norm and carefully controls of the error terms in the convergence of the generator. Uniqueness of the solution to the martingale problem is left open. An application to hole detection is carried.

A Dichotomy for Finite Abstract Simplicial Complexes

Abstract:Given two finite abstract simplicial complexes A and B, one can define a new simplicial complex on the set of simplicial maps from A to B. After adding two technicalities, we call this complex Homsc(A, B). We prove the following dichotomy: For a fixed finite abstract simplicial complex B, either Homsc(A, B) is always a disjoint union of contractible spaces or every finite CW-complex can be obtained up to a homotopy equivalence as Homsc(A, B) by choosing A in a right way. We furthermore show that the first case is equivalent to the existence of a nontrivial social choice function and that in this case, the space itself is homotopy equivalent to a discrete set. Secondly, we give a generalization to finite relational structures and show that this dichotomy coincides with a complexity theoretic dichotomy for constraint satisfaction problems, namely in the first case, the problem is in P and in the second case NP-complete. Abstract:A Sasakian manifold is a Riemannian manifold whose metric cone admits a certain Kähler structure which behaves well under homotheties. We show that the product of two compact Sasakian manifolds admits a family of complex structures indexed by a complex nonreal parameter, none of whose members admits either compatible Kähler metrics, locally conformally Kähler metrics or balanced metrics, if both Sasakian manifolds are of dimension greater than 3. We compare this family with another family of complex structures which has been studied in the literature. We compute the Dolbeault cohomology groups of these products of compact Sasakian manifolds.

Abstract:Magill proved that the remainders of two locally compact Hausdorff spaces in their StoneCech compactifications are homeomorphic if and only if the lattices of their Hausdorff compactifications are lattice isomorphic. His construction for compactifications are explicitely discussed through the partitions of their StoneCech compactifications. Partitions in a StoneCech compactification which lead to Hausdorff compactifications are characterized in this article. Embeddings of certain upper semi-lattices of compactifications into lattices of compactifications are constructed.

Abstract:Abstract Motivated by applications in Topological Data Analysis, we consider decompositions of a simplicial complex induced by a cover of its vertices. We study how the homotopy type of such decompositions approximates the homotopy of the simplicial complex itself. The difference between the simplicial complex and such an approximation is quantitatively measured by means of the so called obstruction complexes. Our general machinery is then specialized to clique complexes, Vietoris-Rips complexes and Vietoris-Rips complexes of metric gluings.

Simplexwise Distance Distributions for finite spaces with metrics and measures

Abstract:A finite set of unlabelled points in Euclidean space is the simplest representation of many real objects from mineral rocks to sculptures. Since most solid objects are rigid, their natural equivalence is rigid motion or isometry maintaining all inter-point distances. More generally, any finite metric space is an example of a metric-measure space that has a probability measure and a metric satisfying all axioms. This paper develops Simplexwise Distance Distributions (SDDs) for any finite metric spaces and metric-measures spaces. These SDDs classify all known non-equivalent spaces that were impossible to distinguish by simpler invariants. We define metrics on SDDs that are Lipschitz continuous and allow exact computations whose parametrised complexities are polynomial in the number of given points.

On the metric spaces of lattices and periodic point sets

Abstract:Lattices and periodic point sets are well known objects from discrete geometry. They are also used in crystallography as one of the models of atomic structure of periodic crystals. In this paper we study the embedding properties of spaces of lattices and periodic point sets equipped with optimal bijection metrics (i.e., bottleneck and Euclidean bottleneck metrics). We focus our treatment on embeddings into Hilbert space. On one hand this is motivated by modern data analysis, which is mostly based on statistical approaches developed on Euclidean on Hilbert spaces, hence such embeddings play a major role in applied pipelines. On the other hand there is a well-established methodology related to such questions in coarse geometry, arising from the work on the Novikov conjecture. The main results of this paper provide different conditions, under which the spaces of lattices or periodic point sets are Lipschitz or coarsely (non)embeddable into Hilbert space. The various conditions are phrased in terms of density, packing radius, covering radius, the cardinality of the motif, and the diameter of the unit cell.

Abstract:In this paper, we answer a question of Nussbaum, Priyadarshi, and Lunel [Positive operators and Hausdorff dimension of invariant sets, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 364(2) (2012) 1029-1066.]. We also show that the Hausdorff dimension and box dimension of the attractor generated by a finite set of contractive infinitesimal similitudes are the same. Further, we extend many results of dimension theory to complete metric spaces. In the last part, we fill the gaps in the proofs of some articles, which are related to the dimension theory, and hint at some possible improvements in the recent papers.

Abstract:In this paper we develop further the multi-parameter model of random simplicial complexes. Firstly, we give an intrinsic characterisation of the multi-parameter probability measure. Secondly, we show that in multi-parameter random simplicial complexes the links of simplexes and their intersections are also multi-parameter random simplicial complexes. Thirdly, we find conditions under which a multi-parameter random simplicial complex is connected and simply connected.
