Abstract:Faced with the challenge of information explosion, almost everyone have been exposed to some kind of information visualization in varies of forms. Understanding how people read, understand, interpret and distinguish various forms of visualizations helps designers and developers think about how to improve the designs from the perspectives of users. This paper applied a mixed research method of quantitative and qualitative to explore how the designs of visualization forms evolved, and whether those kinds of graphs and charts are easy for users to understand, and how much information the users can get from the visualization. By testing if users are able to easily and accurately reach the information and providing the scales of simple to complex, and easy to hard, we see that basic visualizations like bar, pie, bubble, line, and scatter charts have been distributed in areas which are relatively simple in design and easy to read. Nonetheless, visualizations like the tree, parallel coordinate, sunburst, heat map, box plot and Sankey graphs have been concentrated in the regions of relatively complex in design, and are difficult to understand. In addition, the visualizations, including stacked bar, word cloud, box plot, and theme river that frequently appeared in the middle region of the grid, embodied the transitions of visualization design from simple to complex, and easy to hard.
Communicating Visualizations without Visuals: Investigation of Visualization Alternative Text for People with Visual Impairments

Abstract:Alternative text is critical in communicating graphics to people who are blind or have low vision. Especially for graphics that contain rich information, such as visualizations, poorly written or an absence of alternative texts can worsen the information access inequality for people with visual impairments. In this work, we consolidate existing guidelines and survey current practices to inspect to what extent current practices and recommendations are aligned. Then, to gain more insight into what people want in visualization alternative texts, we interviewed 22 people with visual impairments regarding their experience with visualizations and their information needs in alternative texts. The study findings suggest that participants actively try to construct an image of visualizations in their head while listening to alternative texts and wish to carry out visualization tasks (e.g., retrieve specific values) as sighted viewers would. The study also provides ample support for the need to reference the underlying data instead of visual elements to reduce users' cognitive burden. Informed by the study, we provide a set of recommendations to compose an informative alternative text.

Abstract:Information Visualization techniques are built on a context with many factors related to both vision and cognition, making it difficult to draw a clear picture of how data visually turns into comprehension. In the intent of promoting a better picture, here, we survey concepts on vision, cognition, and Information Visualization organized in a theorization named Visual Expression Process. Our theorization organizes the basis of visualization techniques with a reduced level of complexity; still, it is complete enough to foster discussions related to design and analytical tasks. Our work introduces the following contributions: (1) a Theoretical compilation of vision, cognition, and Information Visualization; (2) Discussions supported by vast literature; and (3) Reflections on visual-cognitive aspects concerning use and design. We expect our contributions will provide further clarification about how users and designers think about InfoVis, leveraging the potential of systems and techniques.

Explaining with Examples: Lessons Learned from Crowdsourced Introductory Description of Information Visualizations

Abstract:Data visualizations have been increasingly used in oral presentations to communicate data patterns to the general public. Clear verbal introductions of visualizations to explain how to interpret the visually encoded information are essential to convey the takeaways and avoid misunderstandings. We contribute a series of studies to investigate how to effectively introduce visualizations to the audience with varying degrees of visualization literacy. We begin with understanding how people are introducing visualizations. We crowdsource 110 introductions of visualizations and categorize them based on their content and structures. From these crowdsourced introductions, we identify different introduction strategies and generate a set of introductions for evaluation. We conduct experiments to systematically compare the effectiveness of different introduction strategies across four visualizations with 1,080 participants. We find that introductions explaining visual encodings with concrete examples are the most effective. Our study provides both qualitative and quantitative insights into how to construct effective verbal introductions of visualizations in presentations, inspiring further research in data storytelling.

Abstract:Visual conventions are perceptually efficient graphic agreements with common-sense like referents and are commonly used in what we interact with in daily life. It becomes a studying-worthy issue on whether such conventions can enhance performances and reduce cognitive load when we perceive and reason about new knowledge. Furthermore, whether the visual conventions can affect experts, who have prior knowledge and design experience about different visual encoding principles the same degree as novice who have no background knowledge in this area, is another research focus in this study. Our research is carried out according to action features when we read visualizations. Four task features are extracted, based on which behavioral and eye-tracking measurement were conducted, that is data localization, simple and complex data comparison, and knowledge inference. Both expert and novice participants were enrolled in our experiment. The result indicates that conventional elements in visualizations can hugely improve performances in more complex tasks involving higher-level cognition, like making comparisons and reasoning about new knowledge. The performance improvement can be seen from shorter response time on achieving conclusions and higher accuracy rates. Meanwhile, cognitive load, which can be measured from shorter total fixation duration and fewer fixation counts in AOIs, is reduced through applying visually conventional features. No statistically significant difference is found in comparing perceptual and inferential outputs of expert and novice group. We draw conclusions that visual conventions in visualizations can better performance in relatively complex activities, and it can be equally perceived and acquired regardless of the user’s knowledge background is. What we conclude in this study can be extended to areas of dynamic data visualization and layout design in the digital interface domain.

Abstract:In the information age, a person’s ability to read and make data visualizations is nearly as important as being able to read and write text. This article reports the results of a multi-phase study conducted in informal learning environments in three US science museums. The goal of the study was to determine the familiarity of youth and adult museum visitors with different visualization types. To address this, a total of 273 visitors were shown 5 out of 20 different visualizations that included two charts, five maps, eight graphs, and five network layouts. They were asked to judge the familiarity of the visualization, provide information on how to read it, and provide a name and identify typical locations where they would encounter the data display and possible data sources that might be visualized in this way. The results show that while most participants have a strong interest in science, math, and art, many have a hard time naming and interpreting visualizations. Participants in this study commonly encounter visualizations in school, in books, at work, on the Internet, and in the news. Overall, they were more familiar with basic charts, maps, and graphs, but very few are familiar with network layouts and most have no ability in reading network visualizations. When asked how they would interpret the visualizations, most participants pointed to superficial features such as color, lines, or text as important to developing understanding. Overall, we found that participants were interested in the visualizations we presented to them, but had significant limitations in identifying and understanding them. The results substantiate intuitions shared by many regarding the rather low level of data visualization literacy of general audiences. We hope they will help catalyze novel research on the development of easy-to-use yet effective visualizations with standardized names and guaranteed properties that can be readily used by those interested to understand and solve real-world problems. The results also have implications for how information visualizations are taught and used in formal and informal education, the media, or in different professions.

Abstract:The educational impact of visualization depends not only on how well students learn when they use it, but also on how widely it is used by instructors. Instructors believe that visualization helps students learn. The integration of visualization techniques in classroom instruction, however, has fallen far short of its potential. This paper considers this disconnect, identifying its cause in a failure to understand the needs of a key member in the hierarchy of stakeholders, namely the instructor. We describe these needs and offer guidelines for both the effective deployment of visualizations and the evaluation of instructor satisfaction. We then consider different forms of evaluation and the impact of student learning styles on learner outcomes.

Abstract:Visualizations are playing an important role in the formulation and communication of design concepts. Various types of visualizations are being used in the planning process for the presentation of architectural design projects and planning scenarios. This study examines the process of working with visualizations in planning in Norway, and how it is being used as a means to communicate information. Two types of pilot studies were conducted. The first was a survey that sought to find out what visualization is being used by planners in Norway today. The second study was conducted in the Virtual Reality laboratory at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences and explored how different methods of visualization is being understood and experienced by lay people and professionals. Despite the fact that 2D visualizations (e.g. maps, floor plans, sections, elevations) and BIM visualizations can prove to be less engaging and understandable compared to 3D realistic model visualizations, the findings indicates that the use of mixed methods can provide a better overall understanding of a project.

Abstract:In the decade of data explosion, a significant challenge is how to transform data into understandings and insights that are useful to people. Visualization, the use of computer-supported, interactive visual representations of data to amplify cognition [1] , is an important approach to addressing this challenge. In particular, scientific visualization primarily represents physical or geometric data while information visualization mainly represents abstract data such as text documents, graphs, and multidimensional data. Visual analytics, springing out of the fields of information visualization and scientific visualization, is an emerging research area that targets analyzing massive amounts of information for timely decision making [2] . Its basic approach is to use interactive visual interfaces to facilitate analytical reasoning so that human perception abilities and domain knowledge can be exploited together with computational powers. Closely related to visualization, computer graphics is primarily about representation and manipulation of image data by a computer.

Abstract:How do people internalize visualizations: as images or information? In this study, we investigate the nature of internalization for visualizations (i.e., how the mind encodes visualizations in memory) and how memory encoding affects its retrieval. This exploratory work examines the influence of various design elements on a user's perception of a chart. Specifically, which design elements lead to perceptions of visualization as an image or as information? Understanding how design elements contribute to viewers perceiving a visualization more as an image or information will help designers decide which elements to include to achieve their communication goals. For this study, we annotated 500 visualizations and analyzed the responses of 250 online participants, who rated the visualizations on a bilinear scale as image or information. We then conducted an in-person study (n = 101) using a free recall task to examine how the image/information ratings and design elements impact memory. The results revealed several interesting findings: Image-rated visualizations were perceived as more aesthetically appealing, enjoyable, and pleasing. Information-rated visualizations were perceived as less difficult to understand and more aesthetically likable and nice, though participants expressed higher positive sentiment when viewing image-rated visualizations and felt less guided to a conclusion. We also found different patterns among participants that were older. Importantly, we show that visualizations internalized as images are less effective in conveying trends and messages, though they elicit a more positive emotional judgment, while informative visualizations exhibit annotation focused recall and elicit a more positive design judgment. We discuss the implications of this dissociation between aesthetic pleasure and perceived ease of use in visualization design.

Abstract:Data visualizations are used to communicate messages to diverse audiences. It is unclear whether interpretations of these visualizations match the messages their creators aim to convey. In a mixed-methods study, we investigate how data in the popular science magazine Scientific American are visually communicated and understood. We first analyze visualizations about climate change and pandemics published in the magazine over a fifty-year period. Acting as chart readers, we then interpret visualizations with and without textual elements, identifying takeaway messages and creating field notes. Finally, we compare a sample of our interpreted messages to the intended messages of chart producers, drawing on interviews conducted with magazine staff. These data allow us to explore understanding visualizations through three perspectives: that of the charts, visualization readers, and visualization producers. Building on our findings from a thematic analysis, we present in-depth insights into data visualization sensemaking, particularly regarding the role of messages and textual elements; we propose a message typology, and we consider more broadly how messages can be conceptualized and understood.

Abstract:We present an analysis of the visual portrayals of data (including results) in the full papers and working group reports of ITiCSE from 2013 to 2018. We find that tables are the most common visual portrayal of data in these publications, but that a number of graphical forms are also widely used. We examine the quality of the data portrayals for tables, graphs, and images using visual quality indicators derived from the literature. Overall, our findings are not positive. We find that many papers present data in such a way that it cannot be readily interpreted. The most common problem is captions that do not adequately describe the table, figure, or image. In tables, the main issues affecting readability of numeric data are poor alignment of numbers within a column, unnecessary notations, and unwarranted precision. In graphs and images, the prevalent problem is text that is too small to be read. We conclude with guidelines for future authors to ITiCSE and other computing education venues, in the hope that we can contribute to an improvement in the quality of computing education publications.
Who is the Audience? Designing Casual Data Visualizations for the 'General Public'

Abstract:Casual data visualizations play a vital role in communicating data to lay audiences. Despite this, little is known about how data visualization practitioners make design decisions based on their envisioned target audiences using different media channels. We draw on the findings of a semi-structured interview study to explore how data visualization practitioners working in various settings conceptualize and design for lay audiences and how they evaluate their visualization designs. Our findings suggest that practitioners often use broad definitions of their target audience, yet they stress the importance of 'knowing the readers' for their design decisions. At the same time, commonly used evaluation and feedback mechanisms do not allow a deep knowledge of their readers but rely instead on tacit knowledge, simple usage metrics, or testing with colleagues. We conclude by calling for different forms of visualization evaluation that are feasible for practitioners to implement in their daily workflows.

Abstract:While the visualization community is increasingly aware that people often find visualizations difficult to understand, there is less information about what we need to do to create comprehensible visualizations. To help visualization creators and designers improve their visualizations, we need to better understand what kind of support people are looking for in their sensemaking process. Empirical studies are needed to tease apart the details of what makes the process of understanding difficult for visualization viewers. We conducted a qualitative study with 14 participants, observing them as they described how they were trying to make sense of 20 information visualizations. We identified the challenges participants faced throughout their sensemaking process and the strategies they employed to help themselves in overcoming the challenges. Our findings show how details and nuances within visualizations can impact comprehensibility and offer research suggestions to help us move toward more understandable visualizations.

Abstract:Educational informatisation (e.g. e-learning, m-learning, massive open online courses (MOOCs)) has actively increased, leading to a greater focus on the design and development of course management systems. In this study, a research model based on cognitive fit theory and scanpath theory is proposed to investigate how information presentation formats (flow diagram navigation versus menu navigation) of a course management system influence user experience and intention. Performance load (cognitive load and kinematic load) and user perception (perceived usefulness and ease of use) are considered to evaluate user experience. The results of an eye tracking experiment utilised in this research reveal the following. First, information presentation formats can significantly influence user experience of course management systems. Second, flow diagram navigation fits students' tasks better and leads to lower performance load and better use perception. Third, performance load and user perception shows a significant effect on user satisfaction and thereby affect the intention. These findings deepen our understanding of the importance of information presentation and enrich its theoretical foundation for course management systems development. Practically, these findings provide designers with guidelines on how to improve user experience and increase use intention by varying information presentation formats.
Event-related Potential and Oscillatory Cortical Activities of Artistic Methodology in Information Visualization Design in Human–computer Interface

Abstract:Data visualization is essential for interface design in human-computer interaction. With the advances in information technology, artists and designers have used creative thoughts and artistic methodologies in information design and data visualization. We design a method that minimizes readers' time to memorize data or information through event-related potential (ERP), electroencephalography (EEG) topography, brain connectivity, and volume source estimation analyses. We developed four information visualization interfaces by importing career data from the World Bank Data: integrated generative artistic design (IGAD), separated generative artistic design (SGAD), integrated line chart design (ILCD), and separated line chart design (SLCD). We then compared subjective evaluations and brain electrophysiological biofeedback on user experience (UX) with the aesthetics and usability of user interface design. We enroled 52 healthy subjects (26 men and 26 women) for psychological or physiological differences. The line chart wireframe design and initial animation arousal were found to be more acceptable than the generative style through P200 and N200 analyses. Meanwhile, late positive complex (LPC) and subjective evaluations showed that SGAD is the most beautiful interface for information visualization design. LPC showed generative art as more appealing than the line chart in the left and middle brain regions from the frontal-to-central lobes. We found that decreased delta, theta, and alpha and increased gamma lead to significant memory enhancement in ILCD compared to IGAD. Men and women were found to have different relative power activations in delta, theta, alpha, and gamma. The sex-based difference in visual working memory in theta and gamma connectivity in frontal-to-central brain regions occurred in the ILCD interface design. The difference between delta activation on line chart design and theta and gamma activated in the frontal-parietal-occipital brain in SGAD helped reveal how different designs influence the same data result through connectivity analysis. Volume estimation revealed that the activations vary between brain regions across the one-minute analysis. The subjective evaluation produced different results from LPC objective evaluation aesthetic judgement but the same results in SGAD interface design. We found that memory performance decreases from SLCD, ILCD, SGAD, to IGAD. We also found that most people quickly memorized incrementing and decrementing data trends, which can help future human-computer interface and information visualization design.

Abstract:Significant research has provided robust task and evaluation languages for the analysis of exploratory visualizations. Unfortunately, these taxonomies fail when applied to communicative visualizations. Instead, designers often resort to evaluating communicative visualizations from the cognitive efficiency perspective: "can the recipient accurately decode my message/insight?" However, designers are unlikely to be satisfied if the message went 'in one ear and out the other.' The consequence of this inconsistency is that it is difficult to design or select between competing options in a principled way. The problem we address is the fundamental mismatch between how designers want to describe their intent, and the language they have. We argue that visualization designers can address this limitation through a learning lens: that the recipient is a student and the designer a teacher. By using learning objectives, designers can better define, assess, and compare communicative visualizations. We illustrate how the learning-based approach provides a framework for understanding a wide array of communicative goals. To understand how the framework can be applied (and its limitations), we surveyed and interviewed members of the Data Visualization Society using their own visualizations as a probe. Through this study we identified the broad range of objectives in communicative visualizations and the prevalence of certain objective types.

Abstract:Information visualization (InfoVis), the study of transforming data, information, and knowledge into interactive visual representations, is very important to users because it provides mental models of information. The boom in big data analytics has triggered broad use of InfoVis in a variety of domains, ranging from finance to sports to politics. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey and key insights into this fast-rising area. The research on InfoVis is organized into a taxonomy that contains four main categories, namely empirical methodologies, user interactions, visualization frameworks, and applications, which are each described in terms of their major goals, fundamental principles, recent trends, and state-of-the-art approaches. At the conclusion of this survey, we identify existing technical challenges and propose directions for future research.
