Abstract:Based on Biot's wave equation, this paper discusses the transient response of a spherical cavity with a partially sealed shell embedded in viscoelastic saturated soil. The analytical solution is derived for the transient response to an axisymmetric surface load and fluid pressure in Laplace transform domain. Numerical results are obtained by inverting the Laplace transform presented by Durbin, and are used to analyze the influences of the partial permeable property of boundary and relative rigidity of shell and soil on the transient response of the spherical cavity. It is shown that the influence of these two parameters is remarkable. The available solutions of permeable and impermeable boundary without shell are only two extreme cases of this paper.

Abstract:Based on Biot's wave equation, the dynamic response of a saturated half-space with impeded boundary to a moving load is studied theoretically. By using the Fourier transform method, the integral form solutions are obtained. At last, the influence of the boundary permeability to the dynamic response is analyzed by the numerical Fourier inverter transform. It shows that the influence of the boundary permeability to the dynamic response is associated with the permeability of soil and the velocity and frequency of the moving load.

Abstract:Based on Biot's wave equation, dynamic response of a circular tunnel with partially sealed liner in viscoelastic saturated soil is investigated. By introducing two scalar potential functions, the analytical solutions of stresses, displacements and pore pressure induced by axisymmetric gradually applied step load are derived in Laplace transform domain. Numerical results are obtained by inverting Laplace transform presented by Durbin and used to analyze the influences of partial permeable property of boundary and viscoelastic damping coefficient of soil on dynamic response of the tunnel. It is shown that the attenuation of radial displacement appeared with the increase of viscoelastic damping coefficient of soil, and relative rigidity of liner and soil, and the influence of partial sealing property of boundary on stresses, displacements and pore pressure is remarkable. The available solutions of permeable and impermeable boundary conditions are only two extreme cases of this paper.

Abstract:In this study, the anti-plane dynamic response of an elastic half-space anisotropic medium containing surface semi-cylindrical depressions and internal cylindrical cavity and type-III crack is solved analytically. The wave function expansion method, the complex function method and the Green's function method can be used to effectively construct the free wave field equation and the scattered wave field equation in the case of SH wave incidence, in which the scattered wave field generated by the crack is constructed by the Green's function method and the "crack cut" method. For the scattered wave field generated by a circular cavity is constructed using the mirror method, where the positional offset coefficient in the mirror method of a half-space anisotropic medium is introduced, which well solves the problem of the asymmetry of the scattered wave field. Finally, the effects of anisotropic strength of the medium, SH wave incidence angle and dimensionless incident wave number on the surface displacement amplitude (| W |), dynamic stress concentration factor (DSCF) at the boundary of the circular cavity and dynamic stress intensity factor (DSIF) at the crack tip are investigated in both frequency and time domains under different working conditions, and conclusions different from those of isotropic medium are obtained, which provide some theoretical references for the earthquake-resistant design of the underground structure with canyon topography and the surface building.

Abstract:The series solution of wave functions for 2D scattering and diffraction of plane SH (shear horizontal) waves induced by a U-shaped canyon is proposed herein to account for the topographic effect of such a canyon. The wave function expansion method has been frequently employed to study the topographic effect because it can reveal the physics of the wave scattering and can test the accuracy of other methods. Through a new domain decomposition strategy, the half-space having a U-shaped canyon is divided into three subregions. Hence, we defined three cylindrical coordinate systems. In each coordinate system, the wave field satisfying the Helmholtz equation was represented by means of the separation of variables method, in terms of the series of both Bessel functions and Hankel functions with unknown complex coefficients. Then three wave fields are all represented in the same coordinate system using the Graf addition theorem. The unknown coefficients are solved by satisfying the continuity conditions of the auxiliary boundary and the traction-free boundary conditions on the bottom of the canyon. To show the effects of symmetrical and nonsymmetrical U-shaped canyons on the surface ground motion, a parametric analysis is carried out in the frequency domain. Surface and subsurface transient responses in the time domain demonstrate the phenomenon of wave propagating and scattering. It is found that a zone of amplification can obviously take place at the bottom of a U-shaped canyon with nearly vertical walls.

Abstract:A comprehensive examination of the wave-induced oscillatory response of seabeds around structures is of great significance for ensuring the safe operation of marine engineering projects and enhancing the efficiency of marine resource development. Soil properties in nature exhibit spatial variability due to various geological processes, which should be considered in seabed stability analysis. An integrated CFD-SFEM is proposed for spatially heterogeneous seabeds, incorporating multi-physical solvers for nonlinear wave motion and poroelastic seabed response within a unified framework through a one-way coupling procedure. The wave sub-model for nonlinear fluid flow is based on RANS equations, with an internal wave-maker and absorbing layers realized by employing a momentum source function and damping source terms. The spatially heterogeneous seabed sub-model is based on Biot's poroelastic theory and the random field method. We have implemented the integrated model and automated the iterative algorithm for MCS using MATLAB codes, assisted by the LiveLink platform. The proposed method has been validated from various perspectives and applied to a study of soil response around a partially buried pipeline to demonstrate its practical utility. This study offers a novel framework and perspective for the probabilistic evaluation of oscillatory responses in spatially varied seabeds surrounding structures.
Scattering of plane SH waves by a concentric semi-cylindrical discontinuity and canyon

Abstract:The discontinuity of the medium and the irregularity of the ground significantly affect the propagation of seismic waves. However, the comprehensive effects of these two factors on seismic motion have not yet been fully investigated. To reveal the mechanism of dynamic interaction between the discontinuity and the irregular topography, this study provides a series of solution for the scattering of plane SH waves caused by a concentric semi-cylindrical discontinuity and canyon in an elastic half-space, using the displacement discontinuity model and the wave function expansion method. Based on the proposed series solution, a systematic analysis is conducted to investigate the influences of the stiffness of the discontinuity, the radius ratio between the discontinuity and the canyon, and the properties (e.g., frequency and angle) of the incident wave on the ground motion and underground motion. The results indicate that the stiffness of the discontinuity is a key factor determining the distribution of seismic motion. A high stiffness leads to a distribution similar to that of the canyon alone, while a low stiffness results in a much more complex distribution.

Abstract:Most of the underground rock formations are anisotropic, and the study of the dynamic response of anisotropic geology containing internal defects is necessary for the development of underground tunnels or caverns. In this paper, the wave function expansion method, the complex function method, and the Green's function method are used to solve the problem of scattering of SH waves in anisotropic rock in the presence of elliptical cavity and type-III crack. Boundary conditions for solving the problem are given using the conformal transformation method, and crack in the medium is constructed using the "crack cutting" technique. The scattered wave field generated by the crack is constructed based on the Green function method, and the displacement and stress fields in the model are obtained by the wave field superposition principle in the case of SH wave incidence. The dynamic stress concentration factor (DSCF) on the boundary of the elliptical cavity and the dynamic stress intensity factor (DSIF) at the crack tip are derived. The correctness of the method is verified by degenerating it to a classical analytic solution. Finally, the effects of the anisotropic strength of the rock mass, the dimensions of the cavern, and the incidence angle and wave number of the SH wave on the DSCF and DSIF are analyzed by numerical calculations in both the frequency and time domains. The results show that the anisotropy of the rock mass, the shape of the cavern and the defects of the surrounding medium have a great influence on the dynamic response of the underground structures, which should be given enough attention in the development and design of deep underground caverns or tunnels.

Abstract:A closed-form analytical solution for ground-borne vibrations from a tunnel embedded in a saturated poroelastic half-space is proposed in this paper. The tunnel modeled as an elastic hollow cylinder is surrounded by the water-saturated poroelastic material. The total wave field in the poroelastic half-space with a cylindrical cavity consists of the outgoing cylindrical waves and the down-going plane waves. In addition to the traction-free condition on the ground surface and the continuous conditions of displacement and stress at the tunnel-soil interface, hydraulic boundary conditions on these two scattering surfaces are required to solve this multiple-scattering problem. The transformation properties between the plane and cylindrical wave functions are employed to apply the boundary conditions expressed in both the rectangular and cylindrical coordinate systems. Numerical results for the displacements of the solid on the ground surface and the pore pressure in the saturated soil attributable to a harmonic point load applied at the tunnel invert are presented. The influence of the soil permeability and the hydraulic boundary at the tunnel-soil interface on the free-field responses is investigated. The proposed solution can serve as a benchmark for other computational methods and as an efficient tool for predicting vibrations from a tunnel embedded in a saturated poroelastic half-space. Abstract:A closed-form semi-analytical solution for the vibrations due to a moving point load in a tunnel embedded in a half-space is given in this paper. The tunnel is modelled as an elastic hollow cylinder and the ground surrounding the tunnel as a linear viscoelastic material. The total wave field in the half-space with a cylindrical hole is represented by outgoing cylindrical waves and down-going plane waves. To apply the boundary conditions on the ground surface and at the tunnel–soil interface, the transformation properties between the plane and cylindrical wave functions are employed. The proposed solution can predict the ground vibration from an underground railway tunnel of circular cross-section with a reasonable computational effort and can serve as a benchmark solution for other computational methods. Numerical results for the ground vibrations on the free surface due to a moving constant load and a moving harmonic load applied at the tunnel invert are presented for different load velocities and excitation frequencies. It is found that Rayleigh waves play an important role in the ground vibrations from a shallow tunnel.

Abstract:Based on the Biot’s theory of wave propagation in porous media, this paper studies the transient dynamic response of spherical cavity in viscoelastic and saturated soils. The analytical solution in transformed domain is obtained by the method of Laplace transformation, and numerical results are solved through inversed Laplace transformation. The displacements, stresses and pore water pressure developed in the viscoelastic soils are analyzed and compared with those from elastic model, and some new observations are discussed and interpreted from the perspective of material’s properties. The findings resulting from the current study are helpful to analyzing the transient dynamic responses of underground structures in the engineering practice.

Abstract:In this paper a semi-analytical solution is proposed for modelling vibrations from a twin tunnel in a saturated poroelastic half-space. The twin tunnels are simulated as two hollow cylinders made of a viscoelastic material. The half-space containing the two circular cavities is described as a two-phase poroelastic material. The wave field in the half-space with two cylindrical cavities is taken as the combination of down-going plane waves from the ground surface and outgoing cylindrical waves from each tunnel. With the help of transformation and translation properties of the plane and cylindrical waves the boundary condition at each scattering surface can be expressed with the appropriate coordinates. Numerical results suggest that the reflection effect of the ground surface has limited influence on the response of the tunnels, but has a greater influence on the free-field response near the surface. Compared with the single tunnel solution, the wave field above the twin tunnels is greatly distorted.

Abstract:A computationally efficient semi-analytical solution for ground-borne vibrations from underground railways is proposed and used to investigate the influence of hydraulic boundary conditions at the scattering surfaces and the moving ground water table on ground vibrations. The arrangement of a dry soil layer with varying thickness resting on a saturated poroelastic half-space, which includes a circular tunnel subject to a harmonic load at the tunnel invert, creates the scenario of a moving water table for research purposes in this paper. The tunnel is modelled as a hollow cylinder, which is made of visco-elastic material and buried in the half-space below the ground water table. The wave field in the dry soil layer consists of up-going and down-going waves while the wave field in the tunnel wall consists of outgoing and regular cylindrical waves. The complete solution for the saturated half-space with a cylindrical hole is composed of down-going plane waves and outgoing cylindrical waves. By adopting traction-free boundary conditions on the ground surface and continuity conditions at the interfaces of the two soil layers and of the tunnel and the surrounding soil, a set of algebraic equations can be obtained and solved in the transformed domain. Numerical results show that the moving ground water table can cause an uncertainty of up to 20 dB for surface vibrations. (c) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The dynamic response of a transversely isotropic poroelastic half-space soil medium subjected to moving loads was studied analytically/numerically under conditions of plane strain.The full dynamic poroelastic theory of Biot was employed,under the assumption of an incompressible solid grain and neglecting the apparent mass density.The loading function was presented by a Fourier series expansion.By using the boundary condition at the surface of the soil,the governing equations of motion were then solved.The effect of transversely isotropic on soil vertical displacement were discussed under different parameters such as load speed and coefficient of permeability.Numerical results of vertical displacements were given and indicated that transversely isotropic have much effect on the response of the soil.

Abstract:This study develops an analytical solution for the transient response of a semi-infinite medium subjected to an arbitrary cylindrical line source buried at a certain depth by using the Laplace transform and Cagniard's method. The analytical solution is presented in a simple closed form and each term represents a transient physical wave. During the solution procedure, the arbitrary source pulse is first decomposed into a compressional wave (P) and a tangential wave (S), and then analytical solutions in the Laplace domain for the P and S pulse sources are derived. By applying Cagniard's inverse Laplace transform method and the convolution theorem, analytical solutions in the time domain are obtained. Finally, the analytical solution for arbitrary source pulse can be expressed as the superposition of the solutions for the P and S pulse sources. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate some interesting features of the cylindrical P and S wave propagation in a semi-infinite media with a free surface. A head wave can be observed in a certain area of the semi-infinite media due to the S pulse, which is not found in the P pulse problem. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:An analytical approach is used to study the torsional vibrations of a rigid circular foundation resting on saturated soil to obliquely incident SH waves. Biot’s poroelastic dynamic theory is considered to characterize the saturated soil below the foundation, which is solved by Hankel transform later. In order to consider the scattering phenomena caused by the existence of the foundation, the total wave field in soil is classified into free-field, rigid-body scattering field and radiation scattering field. According to the classification of wave field and the mixed boundary-value conditions between the soil and the foundation, torsional vibrations of the foundation are formulated in two sets of dual integral equations. Then, the dual integral equations are reduced to Fredholm integral equation of the second kind to be solved. Combining with the dynamic equilibrium equations of the foundation, the expressions for the torsional vibrations of the foundation are obtained. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the influence of excitation frequency, incident angle, the torsional inertia moment of the foundation and permeability of the saturated half-space on the torsional vibrations of the foundation.

Abstract:The earth’s surface irregularities can substantially affect seismic waves and induce amplifications of ground motions. This study investigates whether and how the source characteristics affect the site amplification effects. An analytical model of a line source of cylindrical waves impinging on an alluvial valley is proposed to link the source and site. The analytical solution to this problem proves one aspect of the strong effect of source on site amplification, i.e., the wave curvature effect. It is found that the site amplification depends on the source location, especially under conditions of a small source-to-site distance. Whether the displacement is amplified or reduced and the size of the amplification or reduction may be determined by the location of the source. It is suggested that traditional studies of site responses, which usually ignore the source effect, should be further improved by combining the source with site effects.

Abstract:An analytical wave function method for the calculation of vibrations from two tunnels embedded in a saturated poroelastic full-space due to a harmonic point load is given, in which the multiple scattering between twin tunnels is considered exactly. The two tunnels made of viscoelastic material are modelled as two hollow cylinders. The soil surrounding two tunnels is water-saturated, and modelled as a two-phase poroelastic material. The wave field in the full-space with two circular cavities is a superposition of outgoing waves outside the two cavity surfaces. As there is water in the soil, the hydraulic boundary at the tunnel-soil interface is necessary when solving this multi-scattering problem. The translation properties of outgoing waves are adopted to apply boundary conditions described in two sets of cylindrical coordinates. The proposed analytical method for modelling twin tunnels provides a new tool to study the interaction between twin tunnels buried in a poroelastic medium. Some typical numerical results are given to illustrate the influence of the soil permeability and the permeability of the tunnel-soil interface on the displacement and pore pressure responses. In addition, the results for a single tunnel are compared to those of a twin tunnel with various separation distances and angles.

Abstract:Interaction between two cavities and a linear crack subjected to elastic shear horizontally (SH) wave is investigated analytically in this work. Two cavities are buried in two bounded half spaces respectively and the cross-section of each cavity has a different shape. The media of two half spaces are isotropic and anisotropic respectively, and the complex function method is applied to first solve the wave equation in each medium. Then, with the help of image principle, Green's functions and wave field expressions in each separated half space are constructed. Subsequently, utilizing "conjunction" technique, a series of Fredholm integral equations containing undetermined forces at the interface are obtained and reduced in order to be solved. Dynamic stress distribution is mainly considered to discuss the interaction between the cavities and the crack. Finally, a parametric study on dynamic stress concentration factor (DSCF) and dynamic stress intensity factor (DSIF) presents the interaction is affected by several dimensionless factors simultaneously.

Abstract:The numerical analysis of the transverse seismic response of tunnels is an important issue in the design and safety evaluation of tunnel structures, where the spatial variation of earthquake ground motion induced by wave passage effect has been recognized as an important influence factor that cannot be ignored. In this paper, a 2-D transient dynamic finite element modelling technique is applied to investigate the seismic response of two soil-structure interaction systems subjected to obliquely incident plane P and SV waves. Based on the theory of wave input, the incident earthquake motion is modeled as equivalent nodal forces applied on the truncated boundary, and the free field ground response is calculated from the 1-D time-domain finite element method by considering the wave passage effect. The numerical scheme is implemented into the commercial software ABAQUS, and its accuracy is verified by comparing with the analytical solutions of soil-structure interaction problems. Firstly, the verified method is applied to study the transverse seismic response of a circular tunnel embedded in a homogenous elastic half-space under obliquely incident P and SV waves, where the influence of the incident wave type, incident angle, burial depth and tunnel diameter is discussed. Secondly, the response of circular tunnels embedded in a multi-layered non-homogenous elastic foundation is studied, where the influence of tunnel position in the foundation, flexibility ratio between soil and tunnel and stiffness difference of adjacent soil layers in the foundation are extensively investigated. Moreover, comparison is drawn between the tunnel responses in the homogenous and non-homogenous foundation systems, and the importance of conducting asynchronous seismic response analysis of circular tunnels is highlighted.
