Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this study is to gauge the awareness and perception of Indian individual investors about a new fintech innovation known as robo-advisors in the wealth management scenario. Robo-advisors are comprehensive automated online advisory platforms that help investors in managing wealth by recommending portfolio allocations, which are based on certain algorithms. Design/methodology/approach This is a phenomenological qualitative study that used five focussed group discussions to gather the stipulated information. Purposive sampling was used and the sample comprised investors who actively invest in the Indian stock market. A semi-structured questionnaire and homogeneous discussions were used for this study. Discussion time for all the groups was 203 min. One of the authors moderated the discussions and translated the audio recordings verbatim. Subsequently, content analysis was carried out by using the NVIVO 12 software (QSR International) to derive different themes. Findings Factors such as cost-effectiveness, trust, data security, behavioural biases and sentiments of the investors were observed as crucial points which significantly impacted the perception of the investors. Furthermore, several suggestions on different ways to enhance the awareness levels of investors were brought up by the participants during the discussions. It was observed that some investors perceive robo-advisors as only an alternative for fund/wealth managers/brokers for quantitative analysis. Also, they strongly believe that human intervention is necessary to gauge the emotions of the investors. Hence, at present, robo-advisors for the Indian stock market, act only as a supplementary service rather than a substitute for financial advisors. Research limitations/implications Due to the explorative nature of the study and limited participants, the findings of the study cannot be generalised to the overall population. Future research is imperative to study the dynamic nature of artificial intelligence (AI) theories and investigate whether they are able to capture the sentiments of individual investors and human sentiments impacting the market. Practical implications This study gives an insight into the awareness, perception and opinion of the investors about robo-advisory services. From a managerial perspective, the findings suggest that additional attention needs to be devoted to the adoption and inculcation of AI and machine learning theories while building algorithms or logic to come up with effective models. Many investors expressed discontent with the current design of risk profiles of the investors. This helps to provide feedback for developers and designers of robo-advisors to include advanced and detailed programming to be able to do risk profiling in a more comprehensive and precise manner. Social implications In the future, robo-advisors will change the wealth management scenario. It is well-established that data is the new oil for all businesses in the present times. Technologies such as robo-advisor, need to evolve further in terms of predicting unstructured data, improvising qualitative analysis techniques to include the ability to gauge emotions of investors and markets in real-time. Additionally, the behavioural biases of both the programmers and the investors need to be taken care of simultaneously while designing these automated decision support systems. Originality/value This study fulfils an identified gap in the literature regarding the investors’ perception of new fintech innovation, that is, robo-advisors. It also clarifies the confusion about the awareness level of robo-advisors amongst Indian individual investors by examining their attitudes and by suggesting innovations for future research. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to investigate the awareness, perception and attitudes of individual investors towards robo-advisors.

Abstract:The vigor of Robo-advisory is anchored along with AI (Artificial Intelligence) to expedite, synthesize and synchronize the requisite information, an enabler in the progression of upscaling and facilitating financial intelligence and advice, to the xennials and the millennials, on their investment patterns. Innumerable times the investors usually behave irrationally in their investment decisions on selecting financial instruments, schemes or in trading, generally termed as behavioral biases. The prime target for Robo-platforms are the Millennials and the Xennials, due to affordability, 24/7 accessibility and utmost transparency with zero or nil investment bias, through a fusion model (of Robo-plus -Human) or a hybrid strategy, that can help to invigorate the investor’s investment goals. Henceforth this analytical study pertains to apply the advanced TAM (Technology Acceptance Model) on some of the significant variables such as the Perceived Usefulness, Perceived Trust, Perceived Security and the most inevitable demographic variables of the investors, administering the Structural Equation Model, that has confirmed, much remarkable user interface and the competences of AI has played a predominant role in structuring better ease- of- usage, trust and security among the investors on utilizing the Robo-Advisory Services.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence, or AI, enhancements are increasingly shaping our daily lives. Financial decision-making is no exception to this. We introduce the notion of AI Alter Egos, which are shadow robo-investors, and use a unique data set covering brokerage accounts for a large cross-section of investors over a sample from January 2003 to March 2012, which includes the 2008 financial crisis, to assess the benefits of robo-investing. We have detailed investor characteristics and records of all trades. Our data set consists of investors typically targeted for robo-advising. We explore robo-investing strategies commonly used in the industry, including some involving advanced machine learning methods. The man versus machine comparison allows us to shed light on potential benefits the emerging robo-advising industry may provide to certain segments of the population, such as low income and/or high risk averse investors.

Abstract:After the two revolutions in finance over the last century — the efficient market mathematical finance revolution in the 1950s and the behavioural finance revolution in the 1970s —now the third finance revolution with ‘machine finance’ has begun. Robo-advising combines artificial intelligence (AI) and financial expertise to offer accessible and personalised financial guidance. It analyses data, optimises portfolios and provides lower-cost investment strategies. Robo-advisors automate tasks such as portfolio rebalancing and offer efficiency and rational decision making; however, concerns regarding data privacy, algorithmic bias and regulations need attention. This paper explores the benefits, challenges and regulatory landscape of robo-advising. It emphasises the support robo-advisory services provide in minimising risk, generating returns and maintaining portfolios. They offer an efficient alternative to traditional advisors, using technology and expertise for personalised investment guidance. Further, the paper describes the fee structure of robo-advisors and the benefits they offer to financial advisors. It explains that traditional financial advisors typically charge fees ranging from 1 to 1.5 per cent of total assets managed, while robo-advisors charge between 0 and 0.25 per cent for basic services. The paper also explores the impact of fees on investment performance and introduces the concept of robo-advisors using index exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to minimise fees. It further explains the two main types of robo-advisors: hybrid and pure. Additionally, the paper provides examples of prominent robo-advisor providers and their assets under management. It concludes by highlighting the potential influence of AI on robo-advising, including data analysis, personalised recommendations and improved communication with investors.

Abstract:We study a robo-advising portfolio optimizer that constructs tailored strategies based on investors' holdings and preferences. Adopters are similar to non-adopters in terms of demographics, but have more assets under management, trade more, and have higher risk-adjusted performance. The robo-advising tool has opposite effects across investors with different levels of diversification before adoption. It increases portfolio diversification and decreases volatility for those that held less than 5 stocks before adoption. These investors' portfolios perform better after using the tool. At the same time, robo-advising barely affects diversification for investors that held more than 10 stocks before adoption. These investors trade more after adoption with no effect on average performance. For all investors, robo-advising reduces -- but does not fully eliminate -- pervasive behavioral biases such as the disposition effect, trend chasing, and the rank effect, and increases attention based on online account logins. Our results emphasize the promises and pitfalls of robo-advising tools, which are becoming ubiquitous all over the world.

Abstract:construction model for Robo Advising investors belonging to different risk categories. This model will cater to the Gen Z tech-savvy retail investors who have become more active and are interested in online investment platforms like Robo Advising. Our study differs from prior studies as it proposes a portfolio construction model for equity investors belonging to different risk categories while traditional approaches map debt portfolios to low risk investors and equity portfolios to high risk investors. Investors are generally risk-averse but prior studies have developed SB portfolios without considering their risk appetite. In this study, we assess the riskiness of stocks and then categorise them into different risk categories by mapping SB factors such as quality, value, alpha, momentum, etc. We further construct SB portfolios that minimise risk for each category of stocks to cater to investors belonging to low, moderate, high, as well as very high risk categories, using Machine Learning (ML) algorithms. Through a wide range of risk and return performance indicators, we provide evidence that our model offers higher returns at lower risk than human-managed portfolios. Our model proves to be more reliable and encourages Robo Advisors to offer SB portfolios catering to retail investors’ needs and their risk appetite. The study contributes to the evolving literature on Robo Advising, SB investing and to the debate on whether algorithms can replace human portfolio managers.

Abstract:Purpose Financial institutions actively seek to leverage the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) across diverse operations in the field. Especially, the adoption of AI advisors has a significant impact on trading and investing in the stock market. The purpose of this paper is to test whether AI advisors are less preferred compared to human advisors for investing and whether this algorithm aversion diminishes for trading. Design/methodology/approach The four hypotheses regarding the direct and indirect relationships between variables are tested in five experiments that collect data from Prolific. Findings The results of the five experiments reveal that, for investing, consumers are less likely to use AI advisors in comparison to human advisors. However, this reluctance to AI advisors decreases for trading. The author identifies the perceived importance of careful decision-making for investing and trading as the psychological mechanism. Specifically, the greater emphasis on careful decision-making in investing, as compared to trading, leads to consumers' tendency to avoid AI advisors. Originality/value This research is the first to investigate whether algorithm aversion varies based on whether one's approach to the stock market is investing or trading. Furthermore, it contributes to the literature on carefulness by exploring the interaction between a stock market approach and the lay belief that algorithms lack the capability to deliberate carefully.

Notably, Wealthfront is highlighted as a prominent platform in this field, offering automated investment management services aimed at optimizing investment returns. The study investigates the impact of users' past investment performance on their adoption of intelligent advisers, considering factors such as previous defaults and recent investment performance. It reveals that frequent adjustments to the use of intelligent advisers may hinder long-term investment objectives, emphasizing the importance of consistent usage to fully capitalize on their benefits. Furthermore, the research emphasizes the significance of transparency, user-friendly interaction design, and tailored financial services to foster user trust and enhance the optimization of intelligent advisers' design.

Abstract:Purpose This study examines the Robo-Advisors (RA) based on Artificial Intelligence (AI), a new service that digitises and automates investment decisions in the financial and banking industries to provide low-cost and personalised financial advice. The RAs use objective algorithms to select portfolios, reduce behavioural biases, and improve transactions. They are inexpensive, accessible, and transparent platforms. Objective algorithms improve the believability of portfolio selection. Design/methodology/approach This study adopts a qualitative approach consisting of an exploratory examination of seven different RA case studies and analyses the RA platforms used in the banking industry. Findings The findings provide two different approaches to running a business that are appropriate for either fully automated or hybrid RAs through the realisation of two platform model frameworks. The research reveals that relying solely on algorithms and not including any services involving human interaction in a company model is inadequate to meet the requirements of customers in decision-making. Research limitations/implications This study emphasises key robo-advisory features, such as investor profiling, asset allocation, investment strategies, portfolio rebalancing, and performance evaluation. These features provide managers and practitioners with new information on enhancing client satisfaction, improving services, and adjusting to dynamic market demands. Originality/value This study fills the research gap related to the analysis of RA platform models by providing a meticulous analysis of two different types of RAs, namely, fully automated and hybrid, which have not received adequate attention in the literature.

Abstract:Financial Robo-Advisor is the technology that integrates machine learning and self-identification to determine investment decisions. This study explores the financial robo-advisor based on bibliometric analysis and a systematic literature review. The method used three steps: determining the keyword, bibliometric analysis of literature metadata using VOSviewer, then collecting and analysing the articles. The bibliometric analysis results show five cluster keywords defined with different colors. In the network visualization, the robo-advisor connects to other keywords: investment, fintech, and artificial intelligence. Furthermore, the systematic literature review shows that the articles are divided into seven research objectives: (1) Law, Regulation, and Policy; (2) Investment Literate and Education; (3) Offered Services; (4) Present Risk-Portfolio Matching Technology; (5) Optimal Portfolio Methods; (6) Human-Robo Interaction; (7) Theoretical Design and Gap. Furthermore, this study can be used by academicians and practitioners to find out about robo-advisors based on an academic perspective.

Robo-advisors as part of industry 4.0 in financial markets: Evolutionary development, methods, and first performance insights

Abstract:Today, an essential disruptive trend of the fourth industrial revolution is robo-advisors that offer innovative asset management services (Tao, Su, Xiao, Dai, & Khalid, 2021). They are automated investment platforms that use quantitative algorithms to produce advice to investors to help them manage their portfolios and are accessible to clients online (Beketov, Lehmann, & Wittke, 2018). Until now, there has been no comprehensive analysis of the development of these innovative advisors, the asset allocation methods used, and the performance (also concerning the Corona crisis). Thus, the paper takes robo-advisory-related research a step further by analyzing the development of robo-advisory on a global scale from an evolutionary point of view, at the same time focusing on the variety of methods applied by the advisors and the factors influencing their performance between 2018 and 2021 by regression analysis. Our results show that modern portfolio theory remains the primary framework used by robo-advisors, even though some use new approaches. The average performance of robo-advisors appears to beat the market benchmark, however not significantly during the Corona-crash period. Important factors influencing their performance are the number of allocation methods applied and, specifically, the technique of rebalancing. The findings demonstrate that in the context of Industry 4.0, robo-advisors can offer advantages not only in terms of costs and technical processes but also in terms of performance.
Robo-advising: Learning Investors' Risk Preferences via Portfolio Choices

Abstract:We introduce a reinforcement learning framework for retail robo-advising. The robo-advisor does not know the investor's risk preference, but learns it over time by observing her portfolio choices in different market environments. We develop an exploration-exploitation algorithm which trades off costly solicitations of portfolio choices by the investor with autonomous trading decisions based on stale estimates of investor's risk aversion. We show that the algorithm's value function converges to the optimal value function of an omniscient robo-advisor over a number of periods that is polynomial in the state and action space. By correcting for the investor's mistakes, the robo-advisor may outperform a stand-alone investor, regardless of the investor's opportunity cost for making portfolio decisions.

Abstract:In the last few years, the financial advisory industry has been impacted by the emergence of digitalization and robo-advisors. This phenomenon affects major financial services, including wealth management, employee savings plans, asset managers, etc. Since the robo-advisory model is in its early stages, we estimate that robo-advisors will help to manage around $1 trillion of assets in 2020 (OECD, 2017). And this trend is not going to stop with future generations, who will live in a technology-driven and social media-based world. In the investment industry, robo-advisors face different challenges: client profiling, customization, asset pooling, liability constraints, etc. In its primary sense, robo-advisory is a term for defining automated portfolio management. This includes automated trading and rebalancing, but also automated portfolio allocation. And this last issue is certainly the most important challenge for robo-advisory over the next five years. Today, in many robo-advisors, asset allocation is rather human-based and very far from being computer-based. The reason is that portfolio optimization is a very difficult task, and can lead to optimized mathematical solutions that are not optimal from a financial point of view (Michaud, 1989). The big challenge for robo-advisors is therefore to be able to optimize and rebalance hundreds of optimal portfolios without human intervention. In this paper, we show that the mean-variance optimization approach is mainly driven by arbitrage factors that are related to the concept of hedging portfolios. This is why regularization and sparsity are necessary to define robust asset allocation. However, this mathematical framework is more complex and requires understanding how norm penalties impacts portfolio optimization. From a numerical point of view, it also requires the implementation of non-traditional algorithms based on ADMM methods.

Abstract:Technological advancements bring continuous changes into the investment industry. The paper aims to provide insights on future research agenda based on a review of the current stance of research on the links between the Robo-advisors phenomenon and behavioural biases of individual investors. A qualitative investigation method has been applied for literature review on Robo-advisors and their impact on behavioural biases. The key findings indicate that Robo-advisors can help users to make better informed and less biased decisions. However, Robo-advisors activate the investors’ automatic system processes. The resulting passive investment approach could lead to alienation of the investors from the stock market, decreasing their understanding of the investment process that could widen a gap between different clusters of investors. The paper makes several contributions to the literature. First, it provides arguments on why a dual process theoretical framework in the relationship between financial advisory and investment behavioural biases is applicable. Second, it studies the Robo-advisor phenomenon and proposes a comprehensive definition of Robo-advisors. Third, the literature review suggests drivers of the Robo-advisors effect on the changes of behavioural biases as a future research direction.

Abstract:The tremendous advances in artificial intelligence over the past decade have led to their increasing use in financial markets. In recent years a large number of investment companies and hedge funds have been implementing algorithmic and automated trading on their trading. The speed of decision-making and execution is the most important factor in the success of institutional and individual investors in capital markets. Algorithmic trading using machine learning methods has been able to improve the performance of investors by finding investment opportunities as well as time entry and exit of trading. The purpose of this study is to achieve a better portfolio performance by designing an intelligent and fully automated trading system that investors with the support of this system, in addition to finding the best opportunities in the market, can allocate resources optimally. The present study consists of four separate steps. Respectively, tuning the parameters of technical indicators, detecting the current market regime (trending or non-trending), issuing a definite signal (buy, sell or hold) from the indicators’ signals and finally portfolio rebalancing. These 4 steps respectively are performed using genetic algorithm, fuzzy logic, artificial neural network and conventional portfolio optimization model. The results show the complete superiority of the proposed model in achieving higher returns and less risk compared to the performance of the TEDPIX and other mutual funds in the same period.
Intelligent Systematic Investment Agent: an ensemble of deep learning and evolutionary strategies

Abstract:Machine learning driven trading strategies have garnered a lot of interest over the past few years. There is, however, limited consensus on the ideal approach for the development of such trading strategies. Further, most literature has focused on trading strategies for short-term trading, with little or no focus on strategies that attempt to build long-term wealth. Our paper proposes a new approach for developing long-term investment strategies using an ensemble of evolutionary algorithms and a deep learning model by taking a series of short-term purchase decisions. Our methodology focuses on building long-term wealth by improving systematic investment planning (SIP) decisions on Exchange Traded Funds (ETF) over a period of time. We provide empirical evidence of superior performance (around 1% higher returns) using our ensemble approach as compared to the traditional daily systematic investment practice on a given ETF. Our results are based on live trading decisions made by our algorithm and executed on the Robinhood trading platform.

Personalized Robo-Advising: Enhancing Investment through Client Interaction

Abstract:Automated investment managers, or robo-advisors, have emerged as an alternative to traditional financial advisors. The viability of robo-advisors crucially depends on their ability to offer personalized financial advice. We introduce a novel framework, in which a robo-advisor interacts with a client to solve an adaptive mean-variance portfolio optimization problem. The risk-return tradeoff adapts to the client's risk profile, which depends on idiosyncratic characteristics, market returns, and economic conditions. We show that the optimal investment strategy includes both myopic and intertemporal hedging terms which are impacted by the dynamics of the client's risk profile. We characterize the optimal portfolio personalization via a tradeoff faced by the robo-advisor between receiving client information in a timely manner and mitigating behavioral biases in the risk profile communicated by the client. We argue that the optimal portfolio's Sharpe ratio and return distribution improve if the robo-advisor counters the client's tendency to reduce market exposure during economic contractions when the market risk-return tradeoff is more favorable.

Abstract:Building an investment portfolio is a problem that numerous researchers have addressed for many years. The key goal has always been to balance risk and reward by optimally allocating assets such as stocks, bonds, and cash. In general, the portfolio management process is based on three steps: planning, execution, and feedback, each of which has its objectives and methods to be employed. Starting from Markowitz's mean-variance portfolio theory, different frameworks have been widely accepted, which considerably renewed how asset allocation is being solved. Recent advances in artificial intelligence provide methodological and technological capabilities to solve highly complex problems, and investment portfolio is no exception. For this reason, the paper reviews the current state-of-the-art approaches by answering the core question of how artificial intelligence is transforming portfolio management steps. Moreover, as the use of artificial intelligence in finance is challenged by transparency, fairness and explainability requirements, the case study of post-hoc explanations for asset allocation is demonstrated. Finally, we discuss recent regulatory developments in the European investment business and highlight specific aspects of this business where explainable artificial intelligence could advance transparency of the investment process.
