Abstract:Twisted graph diagrams are virtual graph diagrams with bars on edges. A bijection between abstract graph diagrams and twisted graph diagrams is constructed. Then a polynomial invariant of Yamada-type is developed which provides a lower bound for the virtual crossing number of virtual graph diagrams.

Abstract:Virtual knot theory is a generalization of knot theory which is based on Gauss chord diagrams and link diagrams on closed oriented surfaces. A twisted knot is a generalization of a virtual knot, which corresponds to a link diagram on a possibly non-orientable surface. In this paper, we discuss an invariant of twisted links which is obtained from the JKSS invariant of virtual links by use of double coverings. We also discuss some properties of double covering diagrams.

An Extended Bracket Polynomial for Virtual Knots and Links

Abstract:This paper defines a new invariant of virtual knots and links that we call the extended bracket polynomial, and denote by <<K>> for a virtual knot or link K. This invariant is a state summation over bracket states of the oriented diagram for K. Each state is reduced to a virtual 4-regular graph in the plane and the polynomial takes values in the module generated by these reduced graphs over the ring Q[A,A^{-1}]. The paper is relatively self-contained, with background information about virtual knots and long virtual knots. We give numerous examples applying the extended bracket, including a new proof of the non-triviality of the Kishino diagram and the flat Kishino diagram and non-classicality of single crossing virtualizations. The paper has a section on the estimation of virtual crossing number using the extended bracket state sum. Examples are given of virtual knots with arbitrary minimal embedding genus and arbitrarily high positive difference between the virtual crossing number and the minimal embedding genus. A simplification of <<K>> is introduced and denoted by A[K]. This simplified extended bracket, the arrow polynomial, is a polynomial in an infinite set of variables. It is quite strong (detecting the flat Kishino diagram for example) and easily computable. The paper contains a description of a computer algorithm for A[K] and uses the arrow polynomial, in conjunction with the extended bracket polynomial to determine the minimum genus surfaces on which some virtual knots can be represented.

Abstract: We study free scalar field theory on a graph, which gives rise to a modified version of discrete Green's function on a graph studied in \cite{CY}. We show that this gives rise to a graph invariant, which is closely related to the 2-dim Weisfeiler-Lehman algorithm for graph isomorphism testing. We complement this invariant by another type of graph invariants, coming from viewing graphs as quadratic forms over the integers. We explain that the combination of these two ideas give rise to an interesting approach to the graph isomorphism problem.

Abstract:We study a local twist move on welded knots that is an analog of the virtualization move on virtual knots. Since this move is an unknotting operation we define an invariant, unknotting twist number, for welded knots. We relate the unknotting twist number with warping degree and welded unknotting number, and establish a lower bound on the twist number using Alexander quandle coloring. We also study the Gordian distance between welded knots by twist move and define the corresponding Gordian complex.

Abstract:The affine index polynomial and the $n$-writhe are invariants of virtual knots which are introduced by Kauffman and by Satoh and Taniguchi independently. They are defined by using indices assigned to each classical crossing, which we call affine indices in this paper. We discuss a relationship between the invariants and generalize them to invariants of virtual links. The invariants for virtual links can be also computed by using cut systems. We also introduce invariants of twisted links by using affine indices.

Abstract:We show that (as conjectured by Lin and Wang) when a Vassiliev invariant of type $m$ is evaluated on a knot projection having $n$ crossings, the result is bounded by a constant times $n^m$. Thus the well known analogy between Vassiliev invariants and polynomials justifies (well, at least {\em explains}) the odd title of this note.

Abstract:We introduce a new one-variable polynomial invariant of graphs, which we call the skew characteristic polynomial. For an oriented simple graph, this is just the characteristic polynomial of its anti-symmetric adjacency matrix. For nonoriented simple graphs the definition is different, but for a certain class of graphs (namely, for intersection graphs of chord diagrams), it gives the same answer if we endow such a graph with an orientation induced by the chord diagram. We prove that this invariant satisfies Vassiliev's $4$-term relations and determines therefore a finite type knot invariant. We investigate the behaviour of the polynomial with respect to the Hopf algebra structure on the space of graphs and show that it takes a constant value on any primitive element in this Hopf algebra. We also provide a two-variable extension of the skew characteristic polynomial to embedded graphs and delta-matroids. The $4$-term relations for the extended polynomial prove that it determines a finite type invariant of multicomponent links.

Abstract:We reformulate the twisted 1-loop invariant in terms of Ptolemy coordinates. In addition, we prove that the twisted 1-loop invariant is equal to the adjoint twisted Alexander polynomial for all hyperbolic once-punctured torus bundles. This shows that the 1-loop conjecture proposed by Dimofte and Garoufalidis holds for all hyperbolic once-punctured torus bundles.

Abstract:Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications, Ahead of Print. As a generalization of the classical knots, knotoids deal with the open ended knot diagram in a surface. In recent years, many polynomial invariants for knotoids appeared, such as the bracket polynomial, the index polynomial and the [math]th polynomial. In this paper, we introduce a new polynomial invariant [math]-polynomial for knotoids and discuss some properties of the [math]-polynomial. Finally, we construct a family of knotoid diagrams which can be distinguished from each other by the [math]-polynomial but cannot be distinguished by the index polynomial and the [math]th polynomial.

Abstract:The virtual skein relation for the Jones polynomial of the virtual link diagram was introduced by N. Kamada, S. Nakabo, and S. Satoh. H. A. Dye, L. H. Kauffman, and Y. Miyazawa introduced multivariable polynomial, an invariant of virtual links, which is a refinement of Jones polynomial. In this paper, we give a skein relation for the multivariable polynomials among positive, negative, and virtual crossings with some restrictions. We apply this relation to study some properties of virtual links obtained by replacing a real crossing by a virtual crossing.

Abstract:It follows from earlier work of Silver-Williams and the authors that twisted Alexander polynomials detect the unknot and the Hopf link. We now show that twisted Alexander polynomials also detect the trefoil and the figure-8 knot, that twisted Alexander polynomials detect whether a link is split and that twisted Alexander modules detect trivial links.

Abstract:We create an invariant of virtual Y-oriented trivalent spatial graphs using colorings by virtual Niebrzydowski algebras. This paper generalizes the color invariants using virtual tribrackets and Niebrzydowski algebras by Nelson and Pico, and Graves, Nelson, and the second author. We provide usable data sets of Latin Cubes and virtual Niebrzydowski algebras for computational implementation.

As an application, we prove that the twisted 1-loop invariant is equal to the adjoint twisted Alexander polynomial for all hyperbolic once-punctured torus bundles. Abstract:Dye and Kauffman defined surface bracket polynomials for virtual links by use of surface states, and found a relationship between the surface states and the minimal genus of a surface in which a virtual link diagram is realized. They and Miyazawa independently defined a multivariable polynomial invariant of virtual links. This invariant is deeply related to the surface states. In this paper, we introduce the notion of surface pole bracket polynomials for link diagrams in closed surfaces, as a generalization of surface bracket polynomials by Dye and Kauffman. The polynomials induce the invariant of twisted links defined by the author before as a generalization of Dye, Kauffman and Miyazawa's polynomial invariant. Furthermore we discuss a relationship between curves in surface pole states and variables of the polynomial invariant.

Twisted Knots and the Perturbed Alexander Invariant

Abstract:The perturbed Alexander invariant $\rho_1$, defined by Bar-Natan and van der Veen, is a powerful, easily computable polynomial knot invariant with deep connections to the Alexander and colored Jones polynomials. We study the behavior of $\rho_1$ for families of knots $\{K_t\}$ given by performing $t$ full twists on a set of coherently oriented strands in a knot $K_0 \subset S^3$. We prove that as $t \to \infty$ the coefficients of $\rho_1$ grow asymptotically linearly, and we show how to compute this growth rate for any such family. As an application we give the first theorem on the ability of $\rho_1$ to distinguish knots in infinite families, and we conjecture that $\rho_1$ obstructs knot positivity via a "perturbed Conway invariant." Along the way we expand on a model of random walks on knot diagrams defined by Lin, Tian and Wang.
