Abstract:Background Stress during pregnancy is detrimental to maternal health, pregnancy and birth outcomes and various preventive relaxation interventions have been developed. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate their effectiveness in terms of maternal mental health, pregnancy and birth outcomes. Method The protocol for this review is published on PROSPERO with registration number CRD42020187443. A systematic search of major databases was conducted. Primary outcomes were maternal mental health problems (stress, anxiety, depression), and pregnancy (gestational age, labour duration, delivery mode) and birth outcomes (birth weight, Apgar score, preterm birth). Randomized controlled trials or quasi-experimental studies were eligible. Meta-analyses using a random-effects model was conducted for outcomes with sufficient data. For other outcomes a narrative review was undertaken. Result We reviewed 32 studies comprising 3,979 pregnant women aged 18 to 40 years. Relaxation interventions included yoga, music, Benson relaxation, progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), deep breathing relaxation (BR), guided imagery, mindfulness and hypnosis. Intervention duration ranged from brief experiment (~10 minutes) to 6 months of daily relaxation. Meta-analyses showed relaxation therapy reduced maternal stress (-4.1 points; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): -7.4, -0.9; 9 trials; 1113 participants), anxiety (-5.04 points; 95% CI: -8.2, -1.9; 10 trials; 1965 participants) and depressive symptoms (-2.3 points; 95% CI: -3.4, -1.3; 7 trials; 733 participants). Relaxation has also increased offspring birth weight (80 g, 95% CI: 1, 157; 8 trials; 1239 participants), explained by PMR (165g, 95% CI: 100, 231; 4 trials; 587 participants) in sub-group analysis. In five trials evaluating maternal physiological responses, relaxation therapy optimized blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate. Four trials showed relaxation therapy reduced duration of labour. Apgar score only improved significantly in two of six trials. One of three trials showed a significant increase in birth length, and one of three trials showed a significant increase in gestational age. Two of six trials examining delivery mode showed significantly increased spontaneous vaginal delivery and decreased instrumental delivery or cesarean section following a relaxation intervention. Discussion We found consistent evidence for beneficial effects of relaxation interventions in reducing maternal stress, improving mental health, and some evidence for improved maternal physiological outcomes. In addition, we found a positive effect of relaxation interventions on birth weight and inconsistent effects on other pregnancy or birth outcomes. High quality adequately powered trials are needed to examine impacts of relaxation interventions on newborns and offspring health outcomes. Conclusion In addition to benefits for mothers, relaxation interventions provided during pregnancy improved birth weight and hold some promise for improving newborn outcomes; therefore, this approach strongly merits further research.

Randomized Trial Comparing the Physiological and Psychological Effects of Different Relaxation Interventions in Chinese Women Breastfeeding Their Healthy Term Infant

Abstract:Objective: To compare the effects of different relaxation techniques on physiological outcomes and perceived relaxation in primiparous Chinese mothers breastfeeding their healthy term infant. Design: Twenty primiparous mothers who were breastfeeding were enrolled into a within-subject study, and attended six treatment sessions in randomized order (relaxation meditation tape [RM], music tape [M], relaxation lighting [L], combined RM+L, and combined M+L, and control session with no intervention), with a washout period of 1-3 days between sessions. Heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP), fingertip temperature, and perceived relaxation were assessed before and after each session. Results: Compared with the pretest state, significant changes for all outcomes (p < 0.05) were observed for RM, RM+RL, M+RL treatments, whereas differences for all outcomes apart from SBP were observed for treatment M. Compared with the control, significant changes were found in all outcomes for RM treatment, and in fingertip temperature and perceived relaxation for all treatments. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that simple relaxation techniques can reduce both perceived and physiological markers of stress in breastfeeding mothers. Overall, the RM was the most effective technique compared with the control state, considering the number of outcomes affected, effect sizes, and simplicity, suggesting this merits further research in this population.
A Stress Reduction Intervention for Lactating Mothers Alters Maternal Gut, Breast Milk, and Infant Gut Microbiomes: Data from a Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Background: This secondary analysis of data from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) investigated how the maternal gut, breast milk, and infant gut microbiomes may contribute to the effects of a relaxation intervention, which reduced maternal stress and promoted infant weight gain. Methods: An RCT was undertaken in healthy Chinese primiparous mother–infant pairs (340/7–376/7gestation weeks). Mothers were randomly allocated to either the intervention group (IG, listening to relaxation meditation) or the control group (CG). Outcomes were the differences in microbiome composition and the diversity in the maternal gut, breast milk, and infant gut at 1 (baseline) and 8 weeks (post-intervention) between IG and CG, assessed using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing of fecal and breastmilk samples. Results: In total, 38 mother–infant pairs were included in this analysis (IG = 19, CG = 19). The overall microbiome community structure in the maternal gut was significantly different between the IG and CG at 1 week, with the difference being more significant at 8 weeks (Bray–Curtis distance R2 = 0.04 vs. R2 = 0.13). Post-intervention, a significantly lower α-diversity was observed in IG breast milk (observed features: CG = 295 vs. IG = 255, p = 0.032); the Bifidobacterium genera presented a higher relative abundance. A significantly higher α-diversity was observed in IG infant gut (observed features: CG = 73 vs. IG = 113, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The findings were consistent with the hypothesis that the microbiome might mediate observed relaxation intervention effects via gut–brain axis and entero-mammary pathways; but confirmation is required.

Effects of massage therapy on preterm infants and their mothers: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Abstract:Background: Massage therapy for preterm newborns has received increasing attention in recent years due to its beneficial clinical outcomes. However, disagreements persist in different investigations. Method: We performed a systematic literature search in the Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, Web Science, and CINAHL to retrieve randomized controlled trials of premature infants receiving massage therapy and its impact on maternal and infant outcomes. Outcomes were mother-infant attachment, oxygen saturation, motor funtion, reflex, temperature, and calorie intake. The tool developed by the Cochrane collaboration assessed risk bias. With a 95% confidence interval (CI), the integration's results were presented as the mean difference or standardized mean difference. The registration number was CRD42022337849. Results: Of 940 records retrieved, 15 trials were included. Massage therapy increased oxygen saturation (standardized mean difference (SMD) = 2.00, 95% CI [1.17 to 2.83], P < 0.0001). Massage therapy can strengthen mother-infant attachment [SMD = 2.83, 95% CI (2.31 to 3.35), P < 0.00001]. Other outcomes, including motor activity, relaxation, caloric intake, and temperature, did not differ significantly. Conclusion: Massage therapy can significantly improve oxygen saturation and strengthen maternal-infant attachment. However, prior to making a recommendation, additional research with a larger sample size and more rigorous design should be conducted due to the heterogeneity of studies in several outcomes.

Abstract:Background: Breastfeeding is of great importance for infant health both short and long term, especially for those born preterm. Apart from the socio-economic and cultural factors which may influence a mother's decision on breastfeeding, lactation performance is also influenced by maternal physiological and psychological condition, as well as infant behavioural factors. The aim of this project is to investigate physiological, psychological and anthropological aspects of 'signalling' between mother and infant during lactation in a stressful situation, following late preterm delivery, using an experimental approach. Method: A single blind parallel randomised controlled trial will be conducted in Chinese primiparous mothers who deliver a infant (34 0/7-37 6/7) weeks and plan to exclusively breastfeed. Mothers will be recruited from four local community clinics attached to Beijing Children Hospital. Two home visits will be arranged at one week and eight weeks postpartum. Participants will be randomly assigned to either intervention arm or control (no intervention) before the first home visit. Mothers from the intervention group will be asked to listen to an audio recording with relaxation meditation daily during breastfeeding. Maternal stress and anxiety will be measured at one week and eight week postpartum using Chinese version of Cohen's Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Infant weight and length gain (as SD scores) from one to eight week will be measured using anthropometry. Milk volume will be measured using 48-h test-weighing method. Breast milk samples and mother and infant's stool samples will be collected to measure macronutrient and microbiome content. Anthropometric measurements (weight, length and head circumference) will be performed during all home visits. Discussion: Primary outcomes of this study will be the effect of the intervention on maternal psychological state, and infant growth. Other outcomes will include the effect of the intervention on milk production, infant behaviours, and the microbiome composition in breastmilk and maternal and infant's gut. Results of this study will provide greater understanding about maternal-infant factors which influence the success of breastfeeding, and which may then be useful targets for future interventions. Breastfeeding experiences of women with perinatal mental health problems: a systematic review and thematic synthesis

Abstract:Background: Despite its known benefits, breastfeeding rates among mothers with perinatal mental health conditions are staggeringly low. Systematic evidence on experiences of breastfeeding among women with perinatal mental health conditions is limited. This systematic review was designed to synthesise existing literature on breastfeeding experiences of women with a wide range of perinatal mental health conditions. Methods: A systematic search of five databases was carried out considering published qualitative research between 2003 and November 2021. Two reviewers conducted study selection, data extraction and critical appraisal of included studies independently and data were synthesised thematically. Results: Seventeen articles were included in this review. These included a variety of perinatal mental health conditions (e.g., postnatal depression, post-traumatic stress disorders, previous severe mental illnesses, eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorders). The emerging themes and subthemes included: (1) Vulnerabilities: Expectations versus reality; Self-perception as a mother; Isolation. (2) Positive outcomes: Bonding and closeness; Sense of achievement. (3) Challenges: Striving for control; Inconsistent advice and lack of support; Concerns over medication safety; and Perceived impact on milk quality and supply. Conclusions: Positive breastfeeding experiences of mothers with perinatal mental health conditions can mediate positive outcomes such as enhanced mother/infant bonding, increased self-esteem, and a perceived potential for healing. Alternatively, a lack of consistent support and advice from healthcare professionals, particularly around health concerns and medication safety, can lead to feelings of confusion, negatively impact breastfeeding choices, and potentially aggravate perinatal mental health symptoms. Appropriate support, adequate breastfeeding education, and clear advice, particularly around medication safety, are required to improve breastfeeding experiences for women with varied perinatal mental health conditions.

The aim of this intervention modality is to support the parent-baby relationship in a context of vulnerability. A self-questionnaire for parents was used to take stock of the practice of skin-to-skin relaxation at the Centre Hospitalier Intercommunal de Créteil. The use of this mediation appears beneficial and deserves to be developed in neonatology.

Abstract:Evidence about feeding practices' consequences in small for gestational age newborns is not well established because they are less likely to initiate and continue breastfeeding than other newborns. Our aim was to study current knowledge about the benefits of exclusive human milk diet after 2 years of age in small for gestational age newborns. A systematic review of the literature was conducted according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline criteria. Pubmed and Scopus were searched for studies published from databases inception until June 2, 2023. Included articles were analysed and synthesised. Risk of bias and level of evidence assessments were performed. They were enrolled small for gestational age newborns fed by breastfeeding, breast milk or donor milk. The systematic review included 9 articles which were related to 4 health domains: neurodevelopment, cardiovascular, somatic growth and bone mineralization and atopy. Extracted data support a beneficial effect of breastfeeding on these outcomes. Better quality of evidence and longer follow-up are needed.

Associations Between Breastfeeding and Mother-Infant Relationships: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Introduction: Breastfeeding has been associated to an improved mother-child bond, although this link is lacking the sufficient empirical support. Aims: The aims of this study were to carry out a systematic review as a continuation to the one by Jansen et al., and to clarify the link between breastfeeding and mother-infant relationships. Materials and Methods: Data sources: A search was conducted using PsycINFO, MEDLINE, and CINAHL (2008-2018), using both free text words and subject headings. Additional hand-searching was performed. Study selection: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) framework guided (the reporting of) the study selection and data extraction. Eligible articles were subsequently selected by title, abstract, and full text review. Data extraction: Data regarding study setting, participants, breastfeeding, mother-infant relationships, and outcome measures were extracted in a systematic way. Results of Data Synthesis: Ultimately, 13 articles were included. Most studies were conducted in Europe (46.15%) and were nonexperimental studies (92.3%). Eight studies were longitudinal, using between two and five assessment time points. The instruments used to assess the bond between mother and child showed great variability. From the studies, 8 (61.5%) employed self-report measures and four assessed maternal perception. Others used open-ended questions regarding the maternal lactation process or about the mother's activity while breastfeeding. Other measures used were maternal perception of her baby and personality variables associated to breastfeeding. Five articles studied the bond using external observations of the interactions between mother-child. The quality of the studies (Medical Education Research Studies Quality Instrument [MERSQI]) was overall fair to good. Conclusion: It is complicated to extract generalizable results because of the conceptual and instrumental variability of the mother-child relationship. This association is complex and the way in which breastfeeding is carried out would appear to be a decisive factor, influenced in turn by additional variables that should also be taken into account. The relationship indicators most frequently associated to breastfeeding are maternal sensitivity and secure attachment.

Abstract:Despite extensive benefits and high intentions, few mothers breastfeed exclusively for the recommended duration. Maternal mental health is an important underlying factor associated with barriers and reduced rates of breastfeeding intent, initiation, and continuation. Given evidence of a bidirectional association between maternal mental health and breastfeeding, it is important to consider both factors when examining the efficacy of interventions to improve these outcomes. The purpose of this manuscript is to review the literature on the efficacy of behavioral interventions focused on both maternal mental health and breastfeeding outcomes, examining the intersection of the two.

Abstract:Breast milk is the best food for infants as it can fulfill the baby's nutritional needs comprehensively. Breast milk production can increase and decrease, and one of the factors is stimulation of the mammary glands, especially during the first week of lactation. This stimulation can be enhanced through oxytocin massage and lavender aromatherapy, as they stimulate the oxytocin hormone. Objective: To determine the effect of oxytocin massage and lavender aromatherapy on breast milk production in postpartum mothers at Klinik Pratama Triana Nur 2 Sangatta Utara. The research design is a quasi-experimental Pre-test Post-test Design With Control Group. The population of the study is all postpartum mothers who gave birth at Klinik Pratama Triana Nur 2 Sangatta Utara. The sampling technique is consecutive sampling, with a total of 34 participants, 17 in the experimental group and 17 in the control group. The observation of breast milk production is the measurement tool. Data analysis techniques involve the Wilcoxon test and Mann Whitney test. There is a difference in the smoothness of breastfeeding before and after the combination of oxytocin massage and aromatherapy with a p-value of 0.000. There is a difference in breastfeeding smoothness before and after without the combination of oxytocin massage and lavender aromatherapy with a p-value of 0.008. There is an influence of the combination of oxytocin massage and lavender aromatherapy on the improvement of breastfeeding smoothness in postpartum mothers at Klinik Pratama Triana Nur 2 Sangatta Utara with a p-value of 0.003. Discussion: Oxytocin massage and lavender aromatherapy trigger the oxytocin and prolactin hormones to stimulate production due to their relaxation effects. The combination of oxytocin massage and lavender aromatherapy can increase breast milk production.

Abstract:Polyunsaturated fatty acids are critically important for newborn nutrition and in the trajectory of growth and developmental processes throughout early life. This systematic review (PROSPERO ID: CRD42023400059) critically analyzes literature pertaining to how omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in human milk are related to health outcomes in early life. Literature selected for the review were published between 2005 and 2020 and included assessments in healthy term children between 0 and 5 years of age. The studies reported the relation between human milk fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n-3, DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5n-3, EPA), alpha-linolenic acid (C18:3n-3, ALA), arachidonic acid (C20:4n-6, AA), and linoleic acid (C18:2n-6, LA) with three domains of health outcomes: neurodevelopment, body composition, and allergy, skin & eczema. Results from the 21 studies consistently suggested better health outcomes across the three domains for infants consuming milk with higher concentrations of total n-3, DHA, EPA, and ALA. Negative health outcomes across the three domains were associated with higher levels of total n-6, AA, and LA in milk. N-3 and n-6 content of milk were related to neurodevelopmental, body composition, and allergy, skin & eczema outcomes with moderate certainty. Maternal diet impacting milk fatty acid content and fatty acid desaturase genotype modifying physiologic responses to fatty acid intake were prominent gaps identified in the review using the NIH Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies and GRADE approach. This research study can inform baby nutrition product development, and fatty acid intake recommendations or dietary interventions for mothers and children.

Effects of human milk odor stimulation on feeding in premature infants: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Previous studies suggested odor stimulation may influence feeding of premature neonates. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was conducted to assess the effect of human milk odor stimulation on feeding of premature infants. All randomized controlled trials related to human milk odor stimulation on feeding in premature infants published in PubMed, Cochrane, Library, Medline, Embase, Web of science databases and Chinese biomedical literature databases, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP) and Wanfang Chinese databases were searched, and The Cochrane Handbook 5.1.0 was used to evaluate the quality and authenticity of the literature. Relevant information of the included studies was extracted and summarized, and the evaluation indexes were analyzed using ReviewManager5.3. The retrieval time was from the establishment of the database to July 28, 2022.12 articles were assessed for eligibility, and six randomized controlled studies were eventually included in the meta-analysis (PRISMA). A total of 6 randomized controlled studies with 763 patients were finally included in the study, and the quality evaluation of literatures were all grade B. Human milk odor stimulation reduced the transition time to oral feeding in premature infants [SMD = − 0.48, 95% CI (− 0.69, − 0.27), Z = 4.54, P < 0.00001] and shortened the duration of parenteral nutrition [MD = − 1.01, 95% CI (− 1.70, − 0.32), Z = 2.88, P = 0.004]. However, it did not change the length of hospitalization for premature infants [MD = − 0.03, 95% CI (− 0.41, 0.35), Z = 0.17, P = 0.86]. The implementation of human milk odor stimulation can reduce the transition time to oral feeding and the duration of parenteral nutrition in premature infants, but further studies are needed to determine whether it can reduce the length of hospital stay in premature infants. More high-quality, large-sample studies are needed to investigate the effect of human milk odor stimulation on the feeding process and other outcomes in premature infants.

Abstract:Human milk represents a cornerstone for growth and development of infants, with extensive array of benefits. In addition to exceptionally nutritive and bioactive components, human milk encompasses a complex community of signature bacteria that helps establish infant gut microbiota, contributes to maturation of infant immune system, and competitively interferes with pathogens. Among bioactive constituents of milk, human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are particularly significant. These are non-digestible carbohydrates forming the third largest solid component in human milk. Valuable effects of HMOs include shaping intestinal microbiota, imparting antimicrobial effects, developing intestinal barrier, and modulating immune response. Moreover, recent investigations suggest correlations between HMOs and milk microbiota, with complex links possibly existing with environmental factors, genetics, geographical location, and other factors. In this review, and from a physiological and health implications perspective, milk benefits for newborns and mothers are highlighted. From a microbiological perspective, a focused insight into milk microbiota, including origins, diversity, benefits, and effect of maternal diet is presented. From a metabolic perspective, biochemical, physiological, and genetic significance of HMOs, and their probable relations to milk microbiota, are addressed. Ongoing research into mechanistic processes through which the rich biological assets of milk promote development, shaping of microbiota, and immunity is tackled.

Effects of Exclusive Breastfeeding Promotion Interventions on Child Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Introduction: Interventions promoting exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) may benefit infant health outcomes, but evidence is inconsistent. The objective of this review was to assess the effect of interventions promoting EBF on health outcomes in infants and children under 7 years of age. Methods: A literature search was conducted using EMBASE, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Cochrane Central, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform from inception to April 2022. Inclusion criteria were randomized or cluster-randomized controlled trials aiming to increase EBF that reported effects on offspring growth, morbidity, and/or mortality up to age 7 years. The primary outcome was infant/child growth. Secondary outcomes were infant morbidity and mortality and EBF rates. Data were pooled using a random-effects model. Results: Thirty-two studies (40 papers) were identified. No effect on infant/child growth was observed. EBF promotion interventions significantly improved EBF rates up to 6 months (n = 25; OR 3.15; 95% CI: 2.36, 4.19) and significantly reduced the odds of respiratory illness at 0-3 months by 59% (n = 2; OR 0.41; 95% CI: 0.20, 0.84) but not at later time-points. A borderline significant effect was observed for diarrhea (n = 12; OR 0.84; 95% CI: 0.70, 1.00). Effects on hospitalizations or mortality were not significant. Discussion/conclusion: EBF promotion interventions improve EBF rates and might yield modest reductions in infant morbidity without affecting infant/child growth. Future studies should investigate the cost-effectiveness of these interventions and examine potential benefits on other health outcomes.

Abstract:Background: Infants are in a critical period during which often occur many problems, such as growth, development, and motor delays. One of the interventions that can potentially reduce these problems is by giving a massage therapy. Purpose: This study aims to conduct a systematic scoping review of massage therapy's potential for growth and development among infants under nine months. Methods: This study followed a Preferred Reporting Item for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA-ScR). We collected data from three databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL with full text, published in 2013-2022, subjects aged less than nine months, full-text articles, and randomized controlled trials. Studies were excluded if they were not in English. Results: Of the 11 studies found, it shows that therapy massage can effectively increase infants' growth and development, including body weight, length, visual-motor coordination and integration, hand-eye, hearing, speech, social, vagal activity, language, locomotion, stationary, and reflexes. The interventions include medium chain triglyceride oil massage, Dabur Lal Tail massage, oil massage, massage by mothers, and massage therapy without additives for 5-45 minutes. In addition, massage therapy has a positive effect on infants with various conditions, including preterm infants, infants with HIV-infected mothers, and infants with Down's syndrome. Conclusion: Our findings highlight that infants receiving massage therapy were significantly more likely to increase growth and development than the population who were not given massage therapy. However, further investigation into preventing the severity of growth and developmental problems is urgently needed.

Abstract:Exclusive human milk feeding of the newborn is recommended during the first 6 months of life to promote optimal health outcomes during early life and beyond. Human milk contains a variety of bioactive factors such as hormones, cytokines, leukocytes, immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, lysozyme, stem cells, human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), microbiota, and microRNAs. Recent findings highlighted the potential importance of adding HMOs into infant formula for their roles in enhancing host defense mechanisms in neonates. Therefore, understanding the roles of human milk bioactive factors on immune function is critical to build the scientific evidence base around breastfeeding recommendations, and to enhance positive health outcomes in formula fed infants through modifications to formulas. However, there are still knowledge gaps concerning the roles of different milk components, the interactions between the different components, and the mechanisms behind health outcomes are poorly understood. This review aims to show the current knowledge about HMOs, milk microbiota, immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, and milk microRNAs (miRNAs) and how these could have similar mechanisms of regulating gut and microbiota function. It will also highlight the knowledge gaps for future research.

Abstract:In the crucial early months of life, an infant's health, growth, and safeguarding are paramount. Breastfeeding stands out as the optimal and natural means of nourishment, offering profound benefits for their development and overall wellness. Within breast milk, a rich array of bioactive components, including hormones, oligosaccharides, and immunoglobulins, provide neonates with an ideal nutritional balance. Among these, Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs) rank prominently, serving both as prebiotics and shields against various neonatal ailments. Particularly, compounds like 2′-Fucosyllactose (2′-FL) and Lacto-N-Neotetraose (LNnT) have been deemed safe for integration into infant formulas, amplifying their benefits. Extensive research underscores the manifold advantages of HMOs, from modulating gut microbiota to bolstering immune function and thwarting pathogenic invaders. HMOs also exhibit a nuanced interplay with maternal genetics, influencing their quantity and diversity. Infants nursed by secretor mothers tend to enjoy enhanced HMO benefits compared to non-secretor counterparts. Incorporating HMOs like Lacto-N-Neotetraose and 2′-Fucosyllactose into infant formulas represents a pivotal stride in optimizing child nutrition. This review offers a thorough exploration of recent research on HMOs, delving into their varied types, concentrations, and compositions, while emphasizing their profound impact on infant health and safety. By consolidating current research findings and recent progress, this study seeks to clarify the diverse effects of HMOs on different facets of human physiology, immune system maturation, modulation of gut microbiota, neurological functioning, and lifelong health implications. Emphasizing the pivotal role of HMOs in influencing human well-being from infancy to maturity, this review emphasize the necessity for continued research and potential utilization in clinical settings and nutritional science.
