Abstract:We study the thermodynamics of an XYZ Heisenberg chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which describes the low-energy behaviors of a one-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled bosonic model in the deep insulating region. The entropy and the specific heat are calculated numerically by the quasi-exact transfer-matrix renormalization group. In particular, in the limit $U^\prime/U\rightarrow\infty$, our model is exactly solvable and thus serves as a benchmark for our numerical method. From our data, we find that for $U^\prime/U>1$ a quantum phase transition between an (anti)ferromagnetic phase and a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase occurs at a finite $\theta$, while for $U^\prime/U<1$ a transition between a ferromagnetic phase and a paramagnetic phase happens at $\theta=0$. A refined ground-state phase diagram is then deduced from their low-temperature behaviors. Our findings provide an alternative way to detect those distinguishable phases experimentally.
Anyon condensation in the string-net models

Abstract:We study condensation of abelian bosons in string-net models, by constructing a family of Hamiltonians that can be tuned through any such transition. We show that these Hamiltonians admit two exactly solvable, string-net limits: one deep in the uncondensed phase, described by an initial, uncondensed string net Hamiltonian, and one deep in the condensed phase, described by a final, condensed string net model. We give a systematic description of the condensed string net model in terms of the uncondensed string net and the data associated with the condensing abelian bosons. Specifically, if the uncondensed string net is described by a fusion category $\mathcal{C}$, we show how the string labels and fusion data of the fusion category $\mathcal{\tilde{C}}$ describing the condensed string net can be obtained from that of $\mathcal{C}$ and the data describing the string oeprators that create the condensing boson. This construction generalizes previous approaches to anyon condensation in string nets, by allowing the condensation of arbitrary abelian bosons, including chiral bosons in string nets constructed from (for example) Chern-Simons theories, which describe time-reversal invariant bilayer states. This gives a method for obtaining the full data for string nets without explicit time-reversal symmetry from such bilayer models. We illustrate our approach with several examples.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the general properties of lattice spin models that have string and/or membrane condensed ground states. We discuss the properties needed to define a string or membrane operator. We study three 3D spin models which lead to Z_2 gauge theory at low energies. All the three models are exactly soluble and produce topologically ordered ground states. The first model contains both closed-string and closed-membrane condensations. The second model contains closed-string condensation only. The ends of open-strings behave like fermionic particles. The third model also has condensations of closed membranes and closed strings. The ends of open strings are bosonic while the edges of open membranes are fermionic. The third model contains a new type of topological order.

Abstract:Gluino condensation in the second E8 provides a natural mechanism for supersymmetry breaking in E8 × E8 superstring theory. Under certain assumptions, the vacuum energy is naturally zero in the leading approximation. The effective four-dimensional theory is similar to the “no-scale” supergravity theories.

Abstract:While quantum fluctuations in binary mixtures of bosonic atoms with short-range interactions can lead to the formation of a self-bound droplet, for equal intracomponent interactions but an unequal number of atoms in the two components, there is an excess part that cannot bind to the droplet. Imposing confinement, as here through periodic boundary conditions in a one-dimensional setting, the droplet becomes amalgamated with a residual condensate. The rotational properties of this compound system reveal simultaneous rigid-body and superfluid behavior in the ground state and uncover that the residual condensate can carry angular momentum even in the absence of vorticity. In contradiction to the intuitive idea that the superfluid fraction of the system would be entirely made up of the excess atoms not bound by the droplet, we find evidence that this fraction is higher than what one would expect in such a picture. Condensation of Composite Bosonic Trions in Interacting Bose-Fermi Mixtures

Abstract:We reveal a quantum coherent state of composite bosonic trions, where paired fermions further pair with bosons, in a one-dimensional Bose-Fermi system featuring onsite boson-fermion attraction and pair hopping of fermions. Extensive density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations show that the quasi-condensation of the composite trions is established by algebraic decaying correlations of trions, gapped single-particle excitations, and suppressed correlations of fermion pairs. Negative binding energy also indicates a strong tendency to form trions. Furthermore, we conduct a phenomenological analysis based on a mean-field variational ansatz to interpret the emergence of composite trions. Additionally, We discuss feasible experimental methods for realizing this novel phase of matter in ultracold atom experiments.

Abstract:We use a Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) formulation to describe a single vortex in a neutral fermionic gas. It is presumed that the attractive pairing interaction can be arbitrarily tuned to exhibit a crossover from BCS to Bose-Einstein condensation. Our starting point is the BCS-Leggett mean field ground state for which a BdG approach is microscopically justified. At strong coupling, we demonstrate that this approach is analytically equivalent to the Gross-Pitaevskii description of vortices in true bosonic systems. We analyze the sizable density depletion found for the unitary regime and relate it to the presence of unoccupied (positive energy) quasi-bound states at the core center.
Dynamical quasi-condensation in the weakly interacting Fermi-Hubbard model

Abstract:We study dynamical (quasi)-condensation in the Fermi-Hubbard model starting from a completely uncorrelated initial state of adjacent doubly occupied sites. We show that upon expansion of the system in one dimension, dynamical (quasi)-condensation occurs not only for large interactions via the condensation of doublons, but also for small interactions. The behavior of the system is distinctly different in the two parameter regimes, underlining a different mechanism at work. We address the question whether the dynamical (quasi-)condensation effect persists in the thermodynamic limit. For this purpose, we use the two-particle reduced density matrix method, which allows the extension to large system sizes, long propagation times, and two-dimensional (2D) systems. Our results indicate that the effect vanishes in the thermodynamic limit. However, especially in 2D, further investigation beyond numerically tractable system sizes calls for the use of quantum simulators, for which we show that the described effect can be investigated by probing density fluctuations.

Abstract:We study the ground state and classify its phase diagram for a mixture of two spin-1 condensates in the absence of external magnetic (B-) field according to atomic parameters for intra- and inter-species spin exchange coupling and singlet pairing interaction. Ignoring the inter-species singlet pairing interaction, the ground state phases are found analytically. Numerical approach of simulated annealing is adopted when the singlet pairing interaction is present. Our results on the phase diagram and the boundaries between phases allow for easy identifications of quantum phase transitions, that can be induced through the tuning of optical traps and atom numbers. They provide the first insight and guidance for several ongoing experiments on mixtures of spinor condensates.

Abstract:The ground state and its structure for a rotating, harmonically trapped N-Boson system with a weak repulsive contact interaction are studied as the angular momentum L increases up to 3N. We show that the ground state is generally a fragmented condensate due to angular momentum conservation. In response to an (arbitrarily weak) asymmetric perturbation of the trap, however, the fragmented ground state can be transformed into a single condensate state. We manifest this intrinsic instability by calculating the conditional probability distributions, which show patterns analogous to the boson density distributions predicted by mean-field theory.
Finite-temperature properties of string-net models

Abstract:We consider a refined version of the string-net model which assigns a different energy cost to each plaquette excitation. Using recent exact calculations of the energy-level degeneracies we compute the partition function of this model and investigate several thermodynamical quantities. In the thermodynamic limit, we show that the partition function is dominated by the contribution of special particles, dubbed pure fluxons, which trivially braid with all other (product of) fluxons. We also analyze the behavior of Wegner-Wilson loops associated to excitations and show that they obey an area law, indicating confinement, for any finite temperature except for pure fluxons that always remain deconfined. Finally, using a recently proposed conjecture, we compute the topological mutual information at finite temperature, which features a nontrivial scaling between system size and temperature, similar to the one-dimensional classical Ising model.

Ground state of composite bosons in low-dimensional graphs

Abstract:We consider a system of composite bosons given by strongly bound fermion pairs tunneling through sites that form a low-dimensional network. It has been shown that the ground state of this system can have condensate-like properties in the very dilute regime for two-dimensional lattices but displays fermionization for one-dimensional lattices. Studying graphs with fractal dimensions, we explore intermediate situations between these two cases and observe a correlation between increasing dimension and increasing condensate-like character. However, this is only the case for graphs for which the average path length grows with power smaller than 1 in the number of sites, and which have an unbounded circuit rank. We thus conjecture that these two conditions are relevant for condensation of composite bosons in arbitrary networks, and should be considered jointly with the well-established criterion of high entanglement between constituents.

Abstract:We study particle number fluctuations in the quantum ground states of a mixture of two spin-1 atomic condensates when the interspecies spin-exchange coupling interaction c(12)beta is adjusted. The two spin-1 condensates forming the mixture are, respectively, ferromagnetic and polar in the absence of an external magnetic (B) field. We categorize all possible ground states using the angular momentum algebra and compute their characteristic atom number fluctuations, focusing especially on the the AA phase (when c(12)beta > 0), where the ground state becomes fragmented and atomic-number fluctuations exhibit drastically different features from a single standalone spin-1 polar condensate. Our results are further supported by numerical simulations of the full quantum many-body system.

Abstract:We show that stimulated scattering of an isolated system of N Bose particles with initially broad energy distribution can yield condensation of particles into excited collective state in which most of the bosons occupy one or several modes. During condensation, the total particle number and energy are conserved, while the entropy of the system grows. Onset of condensation occurs at a critical particle occupation number when spectrum narrowing due to stimulated processes overcomes spectrum broadening due to diffusion. This differs from Bose–Einstein condensation in which particles undergo condensation into the equilibrium state due to thermalization processes.

Abstract:We study the finite temperature-density phase diagram of an attractive fermionic system that supports two-body (dimer) and three-body (trimer) bound states in free space. Using interactions characteristic for nuclear systems, we obtain the critical temperature T_c2 for the superfluid phase transition and the limiting temperature T_c3 for the extinction of trimers. The phase diagram features a Cooper-pair condensate in the high-density, low-temperature domain which, with decreasing density, crosses over to a Bose condensate of strongly bound dimers. The high-temperature, low-density domain is populated by trimers whose binding energy decreases toward the density-temperature domain occupied by the superfluid and vanishes at a critical temperature T_c3 > T_c2.

Condensation in zero-range processes with a fast rate

Abstract:We introduce a simple zero-range process with constant rates and one fast rate for a particular occupation number, which diverges with the system size. Surprisingly, this minor modification induces a condensation transition in the thermodynamic limit, where the structure of the condensed phase depends on the scaling of the fast rate. We study this transition and its dependence on system parameters in detail on a rigorous level using size-biased sampling. This approach generalizes to any particle system with stationary product measures, and the techniques used in this paper provide a foundation for a more systematic understanding of condensing models with a non-trivial condensed phase.

Fast Condensation in a tunable Backgammon model

Abstract:We present a Monte Carlo study of the Backgammon model, at zero temperature, in which a departure box is chosen at random with a probability proportional to $(2\omega - 1)k + (1 - \omega)N$, where $k$ is the number of particles in the departure box and $N$ is the total number of particles (equivalently, boxes) in the system. The parameter $\omega \in [0,1]$ tunes the dynamics from being slow ($\omega = 1$) to being fast ($\omega = 0$). This parametrization tacitly assumes a two-box representation for the system at any instant of time and $\omega$ is formally related to the 'memory' parameter of a correlated binary sequence. For $\omega < 1/2$, the system undergoes a fast condensation beyond a certain time that depends on $\omega$ and the system size $N$. This condensation provides an interesting contrast to that studied with Zeta Urn model in that the probability that a box contains $k$ particles evolves differently in the model discussed here.

Abstract:Condensation transition in a non-Markovian zero-range process is studied in one and higher dimensions. In the mean-field approximation, corresponding to infinite range hopping, the model exhibits condensation with a stationary condensate, as in the Markovian case, but with a modified phase diagram. In the case of nearest-neighbor hopping, the condensate is found to drift by a "slinky" motion from one site to the next. The mechanism of the drift is explored numerically in detail. A modified model with nearest-neighbor hopping which allows exact calculation of the steady state is introduced. The steady state of this model is found to be a product measure, and the condensate is stationary.
