Abstract:The list of possible commensurate phases obtained from the parent tetragonal phase of perovskites by allowing the tilting of octahedra of oxygen ions is reexamined. It is found that many structures allowed by symmetry are not consistent with the constraint of very rigid octahedra.

Abstract:Perovskites ABX3 with delocalized positions of the X atoms represent a distinct class of dynamically distorted structures with peculiar structural relations and physical properties. The delocalization originates from atoms crossing shallow barriers of the potential energy surface. Quantum mechanically, they can be treated similar to light atoms in diffusive states. Many of these perovskite structures are widely used functional materials thanks to their particular physical properties, such as superconductivity, ferroelectricity and photo-activity. A number of these properties are related to static or dynamic motion of octahedral units. Yet, a full understanding of the relationships between perovskite crystal structure, chemical bonding and physical properties is currently missing. Several studies indicate the existence of dynamic disorder generated by anharmonic motion of octahedral units, e.g. in halide perovskite structures. To simplify structural analysis of such systems we derive a set of space groups for simple perovskites ABX3 with dynamical octahedral tilting. The derived space groups extend the well established space group tables for static tiltings by Glazer [Acta Cryst. B (1972). 28, 3384-3392], Aleksandrov [Ferroelectrics (1976). 24, 801-805] and Howard & Stokes [Acta Cryst. B (1998). 54, 782-789]. Ubiquity of dynamical tilting is demonstrated by an analysis of the structural data for perovskites reported in recent scientific publications and the signature of dynamic tilting in the corresponding structures is discussed, which can be summarized as follows: (a) volume increase upon a lowering of temperature, (b) apparent distortion of octahedra (where Jahn-Teller distortions can be ruled out), (c) mismatch between observed instantaneous symmetry and average symmetry, (d) deviation of the experimental space group from the theoretically predicted structures for static tilting, (e) inconsistency of lattice parameters with those suggested by the theory of static tilts, and (f) large displacement parameters for atoms at the X and B sites. Finally, the possible influence of dynamic disorder on the physical properties of halide perovskites is discussed.

Abstract:Perovskite oxides form a fascinating class of materials because they possess many active degrees of freedom that result in a large variety of physical effects. One important structural parameter controlling the behavior of perovskites is the tilting of the oxygen octahedral. Among other properties, this tilting is coupled with the electric and magnetic orders, which leads to novel and potentially useful phenomena; recent examples include new mechanisms for improper and triggered ferroelectricity, rich phase diagrams, and novel chiral phases, counter-intuitive behaviors of ferroelectric and multiferroic films, and weak ferromagnetism in otherwise antiferromagnetic materials. Interestingly, most perovskites present the same tilted structures, which are few in number and fairly simple. In contrast, here we use different theoretical methods to show that a complete new family of stable phases, all displaying complex and nano-twinned tilting patterns (as well as other anomalous properties), exists in multiferroic BiFeO3 and related compounds.

Abstract:From superconductivity to magnetoelectricity, perovskite oxides exhibit a wealth of appealing physical properties, often controlled by subtle structural details. Especially critical are the ‘tilt’ distortion modes involving rotations of the oxygen octahedra that constitute the backbone of the perovskite lattice, which motivates today’s interest in better understanding and tuning such tilts. Here, the authors present a thorough first-principles investigation of the energy landscape relevant to this matter, revealing the main competitors among different tilt modes as well as their trends across the perovskite family.
Effects of Octahedral Tilting on Band Structure and Thermoelectric Power Factor of Titanate Perovskites: A First-Principles Study on SrTiO3

Abstract:Doped SrTiO3 and other perovskite structured titanates are attracting interest as n-type thermoelectric materials due to their relatively high thermoelectric power factor, low toxicity, and modest cost. Taking SrTiO3 as an example, the effects of octahedral tilting on the electronic band structure and thermoelectric power factor of titanate perovskites have been studied from firstprinciples calculations. By utilizing Glazer's notation, six representative tilt systems, including three out-of-phase (a(0)a(0)c(-), a(0)b(-)b(-), and a(-)a(-)a(-)) and three in-phase tilt systems (a(0)a(0)c(+), a(0)b(+)b(+), and a(+)a(+)a(+)), were investigated. It is found that out-of-phase tilting improves the optimum power factor as compared to the cubic aristotype, while inphase tilting marginally lowers the optimum power factor. The largest increase in power factor (similar to 100%) is obtained in the one-tilt system a(0)a(0)c(-) at a tilt angle of 15 degrees, which can be achieved with an energy cost of only 44 kJ mol(-1) per formula unit. These findings agree with the experimental evidence that increased power factors are found in a(0)a(0)c(-) and a(-)a(-)a(-) tilt systems of titanate perovskites. The predicted increase of Seebeck coefficient as a function of tilt angle in the a(-)a(-)a(-) tilt system of SrTiO3 is also consistent with the experimental increase of Seebeck coefficient in a(-)a(-)a(-) titanates of La0.55K0.45TiO3 and La0.5Na0.5Ti0.9Nb0.1O3. Our simulations provide valuable insights into tuning the thermoelectric power factor of titanate perovskites by controlling octahedral tilting.

Low energy paths for octahedral tilting in inorganic halide perovskites

Abstract:Instabilities relating to cooperative octahedral tilting is common in materials with perovskite structures, and in particular in the sub class of halide perovskites. In this work, the energetics of octahedral tilting in the inorganic metal halide perovskites CsPbI$_3$ and CsSnI$_3$ are investigated using first-principles density functional theory calculations. Several low energy paths between symmetry equivalent variants of the stable orthorhombic (\textit{Pnma}) perovskite variant are identified and investigated. The results are in favor of the presence of dynamic disorder in the octahedral tilting phase transitions of inorganic halide perovskites. In particular, one specific type of path, corresponding to an out-of-phase "tilt switch", is found to have significantly lower energy barrier than the others, which indicates the existence of a temperature range where the dynamic fluctuations of the octahedra follow only this type of path. This could produce a time averaged structure corresponding to the intermediate tetragonal (\textit{P4/mbm}) structure observed in experiments. Deficiencies of the commonly employed simple one-dimensional "double well" potentials in describing the dynamics of the octahedra are pointed out and discussed.

Abstract:The competition between polar distortions and BO_{6} octahedra rotations is well known to be critical in explaining the ground state of various ABO_{3} perovskites. Here, we show from first-principles calculations that a similar competition between interlayer rumpling and rotations is playing a key role in layered Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) perovskites. This competition explains the suppression of oxygen octahedra rotations and hybrid improper ferroelectricity in A_{3}B_{2}O_{7} compounds with rare-earth ions in the rocksalt layer and also appears relevant to other phenomena like negative thermal expansion and the dimensionality determined band gap in RP systems. Moreover, we highlight that RP perovskites offer more flexibility than ABO_{3} perovskites in controlling such a competition and four distinct strategies are proposed to tune it. These strategies are shown to be promising for designing new multiferroics. They are generic and might also be exploited for tuning negative thermal expansion and band gap.

Abstract:A symmetry guide for the secondary structural degrees of freedom and related physical properties generated by tilts of BX6 octahedra in perovskites is proposed.In the family of perovskite materials, the tilts of BX6 octahedra are the most common type of structural distortion. Conventionally, the formation of low‐symmetry perovskite phases with tilted octahedra is analyzed by considering only primary order parameters. However, octahedral tilting also gives rise to secondary order parameters which contribute to additional atomic displacements, ordering and lattice distortions. Our study highlights the significant impact of secondary order parameters on the structural formation and emergent physical properties of perovskites. Through group‐theoretical and crystallographic analyses, we have identified all secondary order parameters within Glazer‐type tilt systems and clarified their physical manifestations. We explore the fundamental symmetry relationships among various structural degrees of freedom in perovskites, including tilt‐induced ferroelasticity, correlations between displacements and ordering of atoms occupying different positions, and the potential for rigid unit rotations and unconventional octahedral tilts. Particular emphasis is placed on the emergence of secondary order parameters and their coupling with primary order parameters, as well as their symmetry‐based hierarchy, illustrated through a modified Bärnighausen tree. We applied our theoretical insights to elucidate phase transitions in well known perovskites such as CaTiO3 and RMnO3 (where R = La and lanthanide ions), thereby demonstrating the significant influence of secondary order parameters on crystal structure formation. Our results serve as a symmetry‐based guide for the design, identification and structural characterization of perovskites with tilted octahedra, and for understanding tilt‐induced physical properties.

Rules and Mechanisms Governing Octahedral Tilts in Perovskites under Pressure

Abstract:The rotation of octahedra (octahedral tilting) is common in ABO3 perovskites and relevant to many physical phenomena, ranging from electronic and magnetic properties, metal-insulator transitions to improper ferroelectricity. Hydrostatic pressure is an efficient way to tune and control octahedral tiltings. However, the pressure behavior of such tiltings can dramatically differ from one material to another, with the origins of such differences remaining controversial. In this work, we discover several new mechanisms and formulate a set of simple rules that allow to understand how pressure affects oxygen octahedral tiltings, via the use and analysis of first-principles results for a variety of compounds. Besides the known A-O interactions, we reveal that the interactions between specific B-ions and oxygen ions contribute to the tilting instability. We explain the previously reported trend that the derivative of the oxygen octahedral tilting with respect to pressure (dR/dP) usually decreases with both the tolerance factor and the ionization state of the A-ion, by illustrating the key role of A-O interactions and their change under pressure. Furthermore, three new mechanisms/rules are discovered. We further predict that the polarization associated with the so-called hybrid improper ferroelectricity could be manipulated by hydrostatic pressure, by indirectly controlling the amplitude of octahedral rotations.
Large isosymmetric reorientation of oxygen octahedra rotation axes in epitaxially strained perovskites

Abstract:Using first-principles density functional theory calculations, we discover an anomalously large bi-axial strain-induced octahedral rotation axis reorientation in orthorhombic perovskites with tendency towards rhombohedral symmetry. The transition between crystallographically equivalent (isosymmetric) structures with different octahedral rotation magnitudes originates from strong strain--octahedral rotation coupling available to perovskites and the energetic hierarchy among competing octahedral tilt patterns. By elucidating these criteria, we suggest many functional perovskites would exhibit the transition in thin film form, thus offering a new landscape in which to tailor highly anisotropic electronic responses.

Octahedral tilting in Prussian blue analogues

Abstract:Octahedral tilting is key to the structure and functionality of perovskites. Here we show how these distortions manifest in the related Prussian blue analogues (PBAs): cyanide versions of double perovskites with formula A$_x$M[M$^{\prime}$(CN)$_6$]$_{1-y}\Box _y\cdot n$H$_2$O (A = alkali metal, M and M$^{\prime}$ = transition metals, $\Box$ = vacancy/defect). Tilts are favoured by high values of $x$ if A = Na or K, whereas the transition metals play a less important role. External hydrostatic pressure can induce tilt transitions nearly irrespective of the stoichiometry, whereas thermal transitions are only reported for $x>1$. Interstitial water can alter the transitions induced by a different stimulus, but (de)hydration \textit{per se} does not lead to tilts. Implications for rational design of critical functionality -- including improper ferroelectricity and electrochemical performance -- are discussed. The results are important for a fundamental understanding of phase transitions as well as for the development of functional materials based on PBAs.
Interplay of octahedral rotations and breathing distortions in charge ordering perovskite oxides

Abstract:We investigate the structure--property relationships in $AB$O$_3$ perovskites exhibiting octahedral rotations and cooperative octahedral breathing distortions (CBD) using group theoretical methods. Rotations of octahedra are ubiquitous in the perovskite family, while the appearance of breathing distortions -- oxygen displacement patterns that lead to approximately uniform dilation and contraction of the $B$O$_6$ octahedra -- are rarer in compositions with a single, chemically unique $B$-site. The presence of a CBD relies on electronic instabilities of the $B$-site cations, either orbital degeneracies or valence-state fluctuations, and often appear concomitant with charge order metal--insulator transitions or $B$-site cation ordering. We enumerate the structural variants obtained from rotational and breathing lattice modes and formulate a general Landau functional describing their interaction. We use this information and combine it with statistical correlation techniques to evaluate the role of atomic scale distortions on the critical temperatures in representative charge ordering nickelate and bismuthate perovskites. Our results provide new microscopic insights into the underlying structure--property interactions across electronic and magnetic phase boundaries, suggesting plausible routes to tailor the behavior of functional oxides by design.

Abstract:Perovskites have been applied in a wide range of fields such as solar cells and nonvolatile memories due to their multiferroic nature and excellent photo-electric conversion capabilities. Recently, two-dimensional perovskites with a few atomic layers have been successfully synthesized, attracting significant attention for potential applications. In this work, we perform first-principles calculations to investigate an ultrathin prototypical Ruddlesden−Popper phase, Bi2FeO4, with its thickness down to one unit cell. We show that this compound could exist in two (meta-)stable octahedral tilting phases, belonging to P21/c and C2/m space groups, respectively. Using the optomechanical theory, we suggest that reversible and nonvolatile phase switching can be triggered using nondestructive terahertz light. In addition, the two phases show distinct optical reflectance spectrum in the visible light range, which can be used as an optical probe for phase transformation. This enables both “write” and “read” in an all-optical route.

Abstract:The combination of oxygen octahedral rotation and epitaxial strain provides a unique opportunity to tune the ferroelectric properties of perovskite superlattices. Here, through first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that the oxygen octahedral rotation predominates the ground state and ferroelectric properties of SrZrO3/SrTiO3 superlattices. The predicted ground state combines the ferroelectric distortion and antiferrodistortive modes simultaneously. The structure-strain phase diagrams of the superlattices are calculated with and without octahedral rotations, which elucidate the interplay of coupling between epitaxial strain and octahedral rotation. It is found that the presence of octahedral rotation not only lowers the energy but also changes the sequence of phase transition from c-r-aa to c-r, in which the coupling of rotation and strain induces an out-of-plane polarization that transforms aa-phase into r-phase.
Columnar Shifts as Symmetry-Breaking Degrees of Freedom in Molecular Perovskites

Abstract:We introduce columnar shifts---collective rigid-body translations---as a structural degree of freedom relevant to the phase behaviour of molecular perovskites ABX$_{\textrm3}$ (X = molecular anion). Like the well-known octahedral tilts of conventional perovskites, shifts also preserve the octahedral coordination geometry of the B-site cation in molecular perovskites, and so are predisposed to influencing the low-energy dynamics and displacive phase transitions of these topical systems. We present a qualitative overview of the interplay between shift activation and crystal symmetry breaking, and introduce a generalised terminology to allow characterisation of simple shift distortions, drawing analogy to the "Glazer notation" for octahedral tilts. We apply our approach to the interpretation of a representative selection of azide and formate perovskite structures, and discuss the implications for functional exploitation of shift degrees of freedom in negative thermal expansion materials and hybrid ferroelectrics.

Abstract:The structural phase diagrams of complex perovskites have been studied within the mean-field approximation. Various phase diagrams with possible topological structures of the 1/2{111}-, 1/2{110}-, and 1/2{100}-type ordered structures are obtained. The 1/2{111}- and 1/2{100}-type ordered structures have similar phase diagrams and their ordering transitions are both of the second kind, while the 1/2{110}-type ordered structure has a more complex phase diagram and its ordering transition is of the first kind. In the two-phase region of the phase diagram, the ordered phase’s composition deviates from that of the chemical formula towards the completely ordering composition which is 0.5 for the 1/2{111}-, 1/2{100}-type ordered structures and 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 for the 1/2{110}-type ordered structures.

Abstract:Recent studies have highlighted the collective rotations of corner-shared oxygen octahedra in ABO3 functional perovskite oxides. However, experimental methods that allow direct measurements of oxygen octahedra, especially for the multilayer containing different types of oxygen octahedral rotations in each layer, are still rare. In this report, the correlation between oxygen octahedral rotation and cation-lattice symmetry is discussed by studying the interface-engineered perovskite La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 layers. The out-of-phase octahedral rotations remove the orthogonality between corresponding axes of the cation lattice, leading to the asymmetric diffraction pattern recorded by the reciprocal space mapping. More importantly, in the La2/3Sr1/3MnO3-multilayer heterostructure, the reciprocal space mapping can identify different octahedral rotations for each La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 layer, explaining the appearance of multiple Curie temperatures and coercive fields. Our results reveal the new understanding of the old reciprocal space mapping-based technique, based on the correlation between oxygen octahedral rotation and cation-lattice symmetry. The application of reciprocal space mapping to the La2/3Sr1/3MnO3-multilayers not only showcases the advantage of this technique but also extends our understanding of oxygen octahedral rotation to the more complicated oxide heterostructures.
