Abstract:In this paper, we develop two variants of Bezout subresultant formulas for several polynomials, i.e., hybrid Bezout subresultant polynomial and non-homogeneous Bezout subresultant polynomial. Rather than simply extending the variants of Bezout subresultant formulas developed by Diaz-Toca and Gonzalez-Vega in 2004 for two polynomials to arbitrary number of polynomials, we propose a new approach to formulating two variants of the Bezout-type subresultant polynomials for a set of univariate polynomials. Experimental results show that the Bezout-type subresultant formulas behave better than other known formulas when used to compute multi-polynomial subresultants, among which the non-homogeneous Bezout-type formula shows the best performance.

Abstract:Subresultants of two univariate polynomials are one of the most classic and ubiquitous objects in computational algebra and algebraic geometry. In 1948, Habicht discovered and proved interesting relationships among subresultants. Those relationships were found to be useful for both structural understanding and efficient computation. Often one needs to consider several (possibly more than two) polynomials. It is rather straightforward to generalize the notion of subresultants to several polynomials. However, it is not obvious (in fact, quite challenging) to generalize the Habicht's result to several polynomials. The main contribution of this paper is to provide such a generalization.

Abstract:We present two results, the first on the distribution of the roots of a polynomial over the ring of integers modulo $n$ and the second on the distribution of the roots of the Sylvester resultant of two multivariate polynomials. The second result has application to polynomial GCD computation and solving polynomial diophantine equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the problem of formulating the subresultant polynomials for several univariate polynomials in Newton basis. It is required that the resulting subresultant polynomials be expressed in the same Newton basis as that used in the input polynomials. To solve the problem, we devise a particular matrix with the help of the companion matrix of a polynomial in Newton basis. Meanwhile, the concept of determinantal polynomial in power basis for formulating subresultant polynomials is extended to that in Newton basis. It is proved that the generalized determinantal polynomial of the specially designed matrix provides a new formula for the subresultant polynomial in Newton basis, which is equivalent to the subresultant polynomial in power basis. Furthermore, we show an application of the new formula in devising a basis-preserving method for computing the gcd of several Newton polynomials.

Abstract:The well-known mathematical instrument for detection common roots for pairs of polynomials and multiple roots of polynomials are resultants and discriminants. For a pair of polynomials $f$ and $g$ their resultant $R(f,g)$ is a function of their coefficients. Zeros of resultant $R(f,g)$ correspond to the families of coefficients of $f$ and $g$ such that $f$ and $g$ have a common root. Herewith the calculation of this common root is a separate problem.

On Isolating Roots in a Multiple Field Extension

Abstract:We address univariate root isolation when the polynomial's coefficients are in a multiple field extension. We consider a polynomial $F \in L[Y]$, where $L$ is a multiple algebraic extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. We provide aggregate bounds for $F$ and algorithmic and bit-complexity results for the problem of isolating its roots. For the latter problem we follow a common approach based on univariate root isolation algorithms. For the particular case where $F$ does not have multiple roots, we achieve a bit-complexity in $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}_B(n d^{2n+2}(d+n\tau))$, where $d$ is the total degree and $\tau$ is the bitsize of the involved <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://polynomials.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> the general case we need to enhance our algorithm with a preprocessing step that determines the number of distinct roots of $F$. We follow a numerical, yet certified, approach that has bit-complexity $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}_B(n^2d^{3n+3}\tau + n^3 d^{2n+4}\tau)$.

Root Radii and Subdivision for Polynomial Root-Finding

Abstract:We depart from our approximation of 2000 of all root radii of a polynomial, which has readily extended Sch{\"o}nhage's efficient algorithm of 1982 for a single root radius. We revisit this extension, advance it, based on our simple but novel idea, and yield significant practical acceleration of the known near optimal subdivision algorithms for complex and real root-finding of user's choice. We achieve this by means of significant saving of exclusion tests and Taylor's shifts, which are the bottleneck of subdivision root-finders. This saving relies on our novel recipes for the initialization of root-finding iterations of independent interest. We demonstrate our practical progress with numerical tests, provide extensive analysis of the resulting algorithms, and show that, like the preceding subdivision root-finders, they support near optimal Boolean complexity bounds.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to obtain a formula giving, for a positive integer $n$, the number of roots of the $n^{th}$ continuant polynomial over a finite local ring. In particular, we will give counting formulae for the roots of the continuant over the local rings $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, $\mathbb{Z}/p^{m}\mathbb{Z}$ and $\frac{\mathbb{F}_{q}[X]}{<X^{m}>}$. To conclude, the methods used for the continuant will allow us to give a new and short proof of the counting formulae for $\lambda$-quiddities (which are the solutions of a matrix equation appearing in the study of Coxeter's friezes) over the rings $\mathbb{Z}/p^{m}\mathbb{Z}$.

A bivariate approach to realrootedness of special polynomials

Abstract:In this paper, we exhibit new monotonicity properties of roots of families of orthogonal polynomials $P_n^{(z)}(x)$ depending polynomially on a parameter (Laguerre and Gegenbauer). We show that $P_n^{(z)}(x)$ are realrooted in $z$ for $x$ in the support of orthogonality. As an application we show realrootedness in $x$ and interlacing properties of $\partial_z^kP_n^{(z)}(x)$ for $k\leq n$ and $z \geq 0$, establishing a dual approach to orthogonality.

Abstract:The fact that a real univariate polynomial misses some real roots is usually overcame by considering complex roots, but the price to pay for, is a complete lost of the sign structure that a set of real roots is endowed with (mutual position on the line, signs of the derivatives, etc...). In this paper we present real substitutes for these missing roots which keep sign properties and which extend of course the existing roots. Moreover these "virtual roots" are the values of semialgebraic continuous -- rather uniformly -- functions defined on the set of monic polynomials. We present some applications.

Abstract:We report an ongoing work on clustering algorithms for complex roots of a univariate polynomial $p$ of degree $d$ with real or complex coefficients. As in their previous best subdivision algorithms our root-finders are robust even for multiple roots of a polynomial given by a black box for the approximation of its coefficients, and their complexity decreases at least proportionally to the number of roots in a region of interest (ROI) on the complex plane, such as a disc or a square, but we greatly strengthen the main ingredient of the previous algorithms. Namely our new counting test essentially amounts to the evaluation of a polynomial $p$ and its derivative $p'$, which is a major benefit, e.g., for sparse polynomials $p$. Moreover with evaluation at about $\log(d)$ points (versus the previous record of order $d$) we output correct number of roots in a disc whose contour has no roots of $p$ nearby. Moreover we greatly soften the latter requirement versus the known subdivision algorithms. Our second and less significant contribution concerns subdivision algorithms for polynomials with real coefficients. Our tests demonstrate the power of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is the study of the robustness of classical methods defined for finding multiple roots with single multiplicity m when they are used for approximating different roots of a function having different multiplicities. To do so, we first study the dynamical behaviour of such methods when they are applied for approximating multiple roots with different multiplicities of a polynomial. Secondly, based on the obtained dynamical results, we analyse numerically their behaviour and convergence when we carry out the approximation in the case of functions that combine polynomial, exponential and logarithmic functions.

Continued Fraction Expansion of Real Roots of Polynomial Systems

Abstract:We present a new algorithm for isolating the real roots of a system of multivariate polynomials, given in the monomial basis. It is inspired by existing subdivision methods in the Bernstein basis; it can be seen as generalization of the univariate continued fraction algorithm or alternatively as a fully analog of Bernstein subdivision in the monomial basis. The representation of the subdivided domains is done through homographies, which allows us to use only integer arithmetic and to treat efficiently unbounded regions. We use univariate bounding functions, projection and preconditionning techniques to reduce the domain of search. The resulting boxes have optimized rational coordinates, corresponding to the first terms of the continued fraction expansion of the real roots. An extension of Vincent's theorem to multivariate polynomials is proved and used for the termination of the algorithm. New complexity bounds are provided for a simplified version of the algorithm. Examples computed with a preliminary C++ implementation illustrate the approach.

On the Wiener-like root-indices of graphs

Abstract:In this paper, we examine roots of graph polynomials where those roots can be considered as structural graph measures. More precisely, we prove analytical results for the roots of certain modified graph polynomials and also discuss numerical results. As polynomials, we use, e.g., the Hosoya, the Schultz, and the Gutman polynomial which belong to an interesting family of degree-distance-based graph polynomials; they constitute so-called counting polynomials with non-negative integers as coefficients and the roots of their modified versions have been used to characterize the topology of graphs. Our results can be applied for the quantitative characterization of graphs. Besides analytical results, we also investigate other properties of those measures such as their degeneracy which is an undesired aspect of graph measures. It turns out that the measures representing roots of graph polynomials possess high discrimination power on exhaustively generated trees, which outperforms standard versions of these indices. Furthermore, a new measure is introduced that allows us to compare different topological indices in terms of structure sensitivity and abruptness.

Numerical Instability of Algebraic Rootfinding Methods

Abstract:We demonstrate that the most popular variants of all common algebraic multidimensional rootfinding algorithms are unstable by analyzing the conditioning of subproblems that are constructed at intermediate steps. In particular, we give multidimensional polynomial systems for which the conditioning of a subproblem can be worse than the conditioning of the original problem by a factor that grows exponentially with the number of variables.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the phenomenon of popular differences (aka the phenomenon of large intersections) holds for natural families of polynomial patterns in rings of integers of number fields. If $K$ is a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ and $E \subseteq \mathcal{O}_K$ has positive upper Banach density $d^*(E) = \delta > 0$, we show, inter alia: 1. If $p(x) \in K[x]$ is an intersective $\mathcal{O}_K$-valued polynomial and $r, s \in \mathcal{O}_K$ are distinct and nonzero, then for any $\varepsilon > 0$, the set of $n \in \mathcal{O}_K$ such that \[ d^* \left( \{ x \in \mathcal{O}_K : \{x, x + rp(n), x + sp(n)\} \subseteq E \} \right) > \delta^3 - \varepsilon. \] is syndetic. Moreover, if $\frac{s}{r} \in \mathbb{Q}$, then there are syndetically many $n \in \mathcal{O}_K$ such that \[ d^* \left( \{ x \in \mathcal{O}_K : \{x, x + rp(n), x + sp(n), x + (r+s)p(n)\} \subseteq E \} \right) > \delta^4 - \varepsilon. \] 2. If $\{p_1, \dots, p_k\} \subseteq K[x]$ is a jointly intersective family of linearly independent $\mathcal{O}_K$-valued polynomials, then the set of $n \in \mathcal{O}_K$ such that \[ d^* \left( \{ x \in \mathcal{O}_K : \{x, x + p_1(n), \dots, x + p_k(n)\} \subseteq E \} \right)> \delta^{k+1} - \varepsilon \] is syndetic. These two results generalize and extend previous work of Frantzikinakis and Kra on polynomial configurations in $\mathbb{Z}$ and build upon recent work of the authors and Best on linear patterns in general abelian groups. The above combinatorial results follow from multiple recurrence results in ergodic theory, which require a sharpening of existing tools for handling polynomial multiple ergodic averages. A key advancement made in this paper is a new result on the equidistribution of polynomial orbits in nilmanifolds, which can be seen as a far-reaching generalization of Weyl's equidistribution theorem.

Abstract:Let $z\ne \pm1,w^2$ be a fixed integer, and let $f(t)\ne g(t)^2$ be a fixed polynomial over the integers. It is shown that the subset of primes $p\geq 2$ such that $z$ and $f(z)$ is a pair of simultaneous primitive roots modulo $p$ has nonzero density in the set of primes. The same analysis generalizes to \textit{admissible} $k$-tuple of polynomials $z$, $f_1(z)$, $f_2(z), \ldots$, $f_k(z)$, such that $f_i(z)\ne g_i(z)^2$, and $k\ll \log p$ is a small integer.

Totally nonnegative matrices, chain enumeration and zeros of polynomials

Abstract:We prove that any lower triangular and totally nonnegative matrix whose diagonal entries are all equal to one gives rise to a family real-rooted polynomials. This is used to develop a general theory for proving that chain polynomials of rank uniform posets are real-rooted. The results obtained extend and unify results of the first author, Brenti, Welker and Athanasiadis. In the process we define a notion of $h$-vectors for a large class of posets which generalize the $h$-vectors commonly associated to simplicial and cubical complexes. This answers a question of Alder on defining a $h$-vectors for $q$-posets. A consequence of our methods is a characterization of the convex hull of all characteristic polynomials of hyperplane arrangements of fixed dimension and over a fixed finite field. This may be seen as a refinement of the critical problem of Crapo and Rota. We also use the methods developed to answer an open problem posed by Forgács and Tran on the real-rootedness of polynomials arising from certain bivariate rational functions.

Abstract:We introduce concepts of "recursive polynomial remainder sequence (PRS)" and "recursive subresultant," and investigate their properties. In calculating PRS, if there exists the GCD (greatest common divisor) of initial polynomials, we calculate "recursively" with new PRS for the GCD and its derivative, until a constant is derived. We call such a PRS a recursive PRS. We define recursive subresultants to be determinants representing the coefficients in recursive PRS by coefficients of initial polynomials. Finally, we discuss usage of recursive subresultants in approximate algebraic computation, which motivates the present work.

Abstract:Two new theorems and two corollaries are presented which give sufficient conditions for a polynomial to have all its roots inside the unit circle. These results unify and extend certain earlier stability tests for discrete time systems. The significance of the new results is illustrated by a couple of examples.
