Abstract:Under the variety of information and communication technologies, the control center can securely and reliably operate power grid during the system disturbances and natural events. Specifically, when the initial failures are detected by cyber monitoring, the system will timely take emergency protecting operations to restrain the spreading of failures. Although cyber network makes the system more robust, they also increase the risk from the cyber network. In this paper, we firstly consider a control strategy into the cascading failures model. Then, we study how the cyber attack - False negatives attack confuses the control center, and makes the control center can not take emergency operation timely, causing the failure continue spreading. We propose an optimization problem to model the above assumptions and, by solving the optimization problem, study the impact of different attack scenarios on power system.

Abstract:Analyzing network robustness under various circumstances is generally regarded as a challenging problem. Robustness against failure is one of the essential properties of large-scale dynamic network systems such as power grids, transportation systems, communication systems, and computer networks. Due to the network diversity and complexity, many topological features have been proposed to capture specific system properties. For power grids, a popular process for improving a network’s structural robustness is via the topology design. However, most of existing methods focus on localized network metrics, such as node connectivity and edge connectivity, which do not encompass a global perspective of cascading propagation in a power grid. In this paper, we use an informative global metric algebraic connectivity because it is sensitive to the connectedness in a broader spectrum of graphs. Our process involves decreasing the average propagation in a power grid by minimizing the increase in its algebraic connectivity. We propose a topology-based greedy strategy to optimize the robustness of the power grid. To evaluate the network robustness, we calculate the average propagation using MATCASC to simulate cascading line outages in power grids. Experimental results illustrate that our proposed method outperforms existing techniques.

Abstract:We consider discrete-time dynamics, for cascading failure in DC networks, whose map is composition of failure rule with control actions. Supply-demand at the nodes is monotonically non-increasing under admissible control. Under the failure rule, a link is removed permanently if its flow exceeds capacity constraints. We consider finite horizon optimal control to steer the network from an arbitrary initial state, defined in terms of active link set and supply-demand at the nodes, to a feasible state, i.e., a state which is invariant under the failure rule. There is no running cost and the reward associated with a feasible terminal state is the associated cumulative supply-demand. We propose two approaches for computing optimal control. The first approach, geared towards tree reducible networks, decomposes the global problem into a system of coupled local problems, which can be solved to optimality in two iterations. When restricted to the class of one-shot control actions, the optimal solutions to the local problems possess a piecewise affine property, which facilitates analytical solution. The second approach computes optimal control by searching over the reachable set, which is shown to admit an equivalent finite representation by aggregation of control actions leading to the same reachable active link set. An algorithmic procedure to construct this representation is provided by leveraging and extending tools for arrangement of hyperplanes and polytopes. Illustrative simulations, including showing the effectiveness of a projection-based approximation algorithm, are also presented.

Analysis of cascading failures under interactions between power grid and communication network

Abstract:The conventional research on cascading failures in the power system is only limited in the physical power grid, in which interactions between power grid and communication network are seldom considered. With IEEE 118-bus system and New England 39-bus system as examples, the model of interaction between power grid and its communication network in accord with the practical power system is presented based on the DC power flow model. The impact of various routing strategies on the cascading failures of power system is investigated by adjusting the responding parameters of communication network and the inter-similarity between coupled networks is discussed based on the complex network theory. Simulative results indicate that, with proper routing strategy of communication network, the probability of cascading failures of power system can be reduced and the optimal inter-similarity strategy between coupled networks of different power systems is same, which can be adopted to effectively decrease the probability of large-scale blackout.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a distributed control strategy to prevent dynamically-induced cascading failures in power grids. We model power grids using complex networks and nonlinear dynamics to provide a coarse-grained description of the electro-mechanical phenomena taking place on them (in particular, we use coupled swing equations) and restrict our analysis to cascades of line failures, i.e., failures due to power flows exceeding the maximum capacity of a line. We formulate a distributed control protocol relying on the same topology of the physical layer and apply it to several power grid models, including a small-size illustrative example with five nodes, the Italian high-voltage (380kV) power grid, and the IEEE 118-bus system. Our results indicate that the approach is capable of preventing cascading failures, either controlling each node of the network or a suitable subset of them.

Abstract:Traditional OPA model and its improved models can simulate the cascading failures and reveal the macro-scale of self-organized criticality of the power grid,but lack for considering the effect of the evolvement of topology of the power grid.For the purpose of studying the mechanism of blackouts,an improved OPA model is proposed,in which the structure evolvement of power grid is added to the slow dynamics.Simulation results from two typical complex networks show power grid always organizes itself to criticality in evolving model of small-world network as well as scale-free network.Moreover,from the comparison results between the power grids with two different growth ways,it can be found that the characteristic of small-world power grid makes power loss larger than that in scale-free power grid,and cascading failure in scale-free power grid often lead to lines outage in small scale and ends with little power loss,which can help to release the system stress and decrease the probability of large blackouts.These results can be beneficial in major disturbance mitigation and system planning and upgrading.

Abstract:Cascading failure is the main mechanism of large blackouts in power grid. In this paper, a model of cascading failure propagation based on synergetics theory is constructed. Numerical simulations show that the macroscopic properties of the power grid during cascading failure propagation are governed by the general laws of synergetics. Real blackout data are also consistent with this model. This discovery of synergetic behavior in cascading failure propagation in power grid might shed some new lights on analyzing and preventing large blackouts in complex power grid.

Abstract:This paper aims to identify and analyze the initial contingencies or disturbances that could lead to the worst-case cascading failures of power grids. An optimal control approach is proposed to determine the most disruptive disturbances on the branch of power transmission system by regarding the disturbances as the control inputs. Moreover, protective actions such as load shedding and generation dispatch are taken into account in a convex optimization framework to prevent the cascading outages of power grids. In theory, the necessary conditions for identifying the most disruptive disturbances are obtained by solving an integrated system of algebraic equations. Finally, numerical simulations are carried out to validate the proposed approach on the IEEE RTS 24 Bus System.

Mitigating Cascading Failures in Interdependent Power Grids and Communication Networks

Abstract:In this paper, we study the interdependency between the power grid and the communication network used to control the grid. A communication node depends on the power grid in order to receive power for operation, and a power node depends on the communication network in order to receive control signals for safe operation. We demonstrate that these dependencies can lead to cascading failures, and it is essential to consider the power flow equations for studying the behavior of such interdependent networks. We propose a two-phase control policy to mitigate the cascade of failures. In the first phase, our control policy finds the non-avoidable failures that occur due to physical disconnection. In the second phase, our algorithm redistributes the power so that all the connected communication nodes have enough power for operation and no power lines overload. We perform a sensitivity analysis to evaluate the performance of our control policy, and show that our control policy achieves close to optimal yield for many scenarios. This analysis can help design robust interdependent grids and associated control policies.

Abstract:Generator-tripping and load-shedding are important emergency control measures to maintain the transient stability of the power system. In this paper, emergency control is modeled as a large-scale optimal control problem. An efficient parallel sequential approach, which consists of preprocessing layer, simulation layer, and optimization layer, is proposed to solve the problem. In the preprocessing layer, power system partitioning is performed to construct a Jacobian matrix of double-layered bordered block diagonal (BBD) structure, control variable selection and initialization are designed to reduce computation cost and improve convergence. In the simulation layer, the differential algebraic equations are solved in parallel with the sensitivity analysis by reusing the LU-factorizations. Based on the BBD structure of Jacobian matrix, a parallel block algorithm is proposed to further accelerate computation speed. In the optimization layer, the resulting nonlinear programming problem is efficiently solved by predictor-corrector interior point method. The efficiency and practicality of the proposed approach are verified by numerical experiments on three test systems.

Abstract:<p>Due to deep integration between power grids and communication networks, cascading failure is spreading more readily in cyber–physical power systems (CPPS), even leading to blackouts. This paper mainly investigates optimized control under dual-network interactive cascading failure to support the operation of CPPS. Firstly, the topological and interactions characteristics between power grids and communication networks are analyzed, and a CPPS model is established based on the concepts of complex networks where the correlation of nodes is described by "degree to degree". Secondly, considering communication constraints including simultaneous bandwidth consumption and delay, an optimal routing policy with constraints based on publish–subscribe network (PSN) architecture is employed to reconstruct the transmission paths of corrupted data packets during cascading failure. Furthermore, a round trip time is defined to determine the received states of data packets and to reflect the impact of packets delay on cascading failure. Thirdly, according to direct current (DC) power flow and optimal routing policy with constraints, an optimization and control algorithm under the interactive cascading failure is proposed to provide optimized control strategy of CPPS. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in comparison with other approaches.</p>

Abstract:We consider power line outages in the transmission system of the power grid, and specifically those caused by a natural disaster or a large scale physical attack. In the transmission system, an outage of a line may lead to overload on other lines, thereby eventually leading to their outage. While such cascading failures have been studied before, our focus is on cascading failures that follow an outage of several lines in the same geographical area. We provide an analytical model of such failures, investigate the model's properties, and show that it differs from other models used to analyze cascades in the power grid (e.g., epidemic/percolation-based models). We then show how to identify the most vulnerable locations in the grid and perform extensive numerical experiments with real grid data to investigate the various effects of geographically correlated outages and the resulting cascades. These results allow us to gain insights into the relationships between various parameters and performance metrics, such as the size of the original event, the final number of connected components, and the fraction of demand (load) satisfied after the cascade. In particular, we focus on the timing and nature of optimal control actions used to reduce the impact of a cascade, in real time. We also compare results obtained by our model to the results of a real cascade that occurred during a major blackout in the San Diego area on Sept. 2011. The analysis and results presented in this paper will have implications both on the design of new power grids and on identifying the locations for shielding, strengthening, and monitoring efforts in grid upgrades.
Long-term Effect of Relay Protection Operation on Cascading Failures in Growing Scale-Free Small-World Power Grid

Abstract:Electric power transmission systems are a key infrastructure in modern power system, and the relay protection device is one of the most important components of a power system. Analyses of topology and blackout data of real power systems indicate that many real power systems possess complex networks' characteristics like scale-free or small-world and blackouts behave as a complex dynamical system. Moreover, the topology evolution is a significant characteristic of the network. Therefore, we use an ORNL-PSerc-Alaska (OPA) model considering topology evolution to investigate how these complex system dynamics impact on the assessment of measures for improving relay protection. Simulation results show that a decrease in the probability of failure to operate relay protection does not reduce the probability of large blackouts in the growing scale-free small-world power grid, but increases that instead, and unwanted operation of relay protection is more harmful to the system. The mitigation of failures of relay protection in complex systems needs to be approached with care.

Abstract:Electrical power grids are vulnerable to cascading failures that can lead to large blackouts. Detection and prevention of cascading failures in power grids is impor- tant. Currently, grid operators mainly monitor the state (loading level) of individual components in power grids. The complex architecture of power grids, with many interdependencies, makes it difficult to aggregate data provided by local compo- nents in a timely manner and meaningful way: monitoring the resilience with re- spect to cascading failures of an operational power grid is a challenge. This paper addresses this challenge. The main ideas behind the paper are that (i) a robustness metric based on both the topology and the operative state of the power grid can be used to quantify power grid robustness and (ii) a new proposed a distributed computation method with self-stabilizing properties can be used to achieving near real-time monitoring of the robustness of the power grid. Our con- tributions thus provide insight into the resilience with respect to cascading failures of a dynamic operational power grid at runtime, in a scalable and robust way. Com- putations are pushed into the network, making the results available at each node, allowing automated distributed control mechanisms to be implemented on top.

Abstract:Electrical power systems are one of the most important infrastructures that support our society. However, their vulnerabilities have raised great concern recently due to several large-scale blackouts around the world. In this paper, we investigate the robustness of power systems against cascading failures initiated by a random attack. This is done under a simple yet useful model based on global and equal redistribution of load upon failures. We provide a complete understanding of system robustness by i) deriving an expression for the final system size as a function of the size of initial attacks; ii) deriving the critical attack size after which system breaks down completely; iii) showing that complete system breakdown takes place through a first-order (i.e., discontinuous) transition in terms of the attack size; and iv) establishing the optimal load-capacity distribution that maximizes robustness. In particular, we show that robustness is maximized when the difference between the capacity and initial load is the same for all lines; i.e., when all lines have the same redundant space regardless of their initial load. This is in contrast with the intuitive and commonly used setting where capacity of a line is a fixed factor of its initial load.

Abstract:Real-world network systems, for example, power grids, are critical to modern economies. Due to the increasing system scale and complex dependencies inside of these networks, system failures can widely spread and cause severe damage. We have experienced massive cascading failures in power grids, such as major U.S. western grid failures in 1996 and the great Northeast blackout of 2003. Therefore, analyzing cascading failures and defense strategies, in response to system catastrophic breakdown, is crucial. Although many efforts have been performed to prevent failure propagation throughout systems, optimal system restoration considering system dependency against cascading failures is rarely studied. In this paper, we present a framework to optimize restoration strategies to improve system resiliency regarding cascading failures. The effects of restoration strategies are evaluated by system resilience loss during the cascading process. Furthermore, how system dependency influences the effects of the system restoration actions against cascading failures are investigated. By performing a case study on the western U.S. transmission grid, we demonstrate that our framework of system restoration optimization can enhance system resiliency by reducing the intensity and extent of cascading failures. Our proposed framework provides insights regarding optimal system restoration from cascading failures to enhance the resiliency of real-life network systems.

Abstract:This paper proposes an attack-resilient adaptive controller to ensure synchronization of multiple cooperative grid-forming converters (GfCs) under cyber attacks. As the existing cooperative control philosophies do not consider the impact of intrusion into the sensors, communication links with an open-end vulnerability in the control layer, this scenario may lead to asynchrony or even cause shutdown of multiple GfCs in a cascaded manner by unnecessarily triggering the protection schemes. Hence, these vulnerabilities in the control layer have firstly been assessed in this paper. Further, an adaptive resilient control update is designed to ensure synchronization despite the presence of these attacks. Finally, the efficacy of the proposed control strategy for multiple GfCs is evaluated under simulated conditions.

Abstract:In bulk power systems,cascading failures triggered by normal events may lead to large blackouts.For online security control in large scale power grids,a real-time control strategy based on multi-agent system to prevent cascading trips is presented,and the principle of load shedding and generator tripping is also given.An agent is placed at each bus of the power grid differing from traditional distributed method that takes subarea or substratum as an agent.Each agent employs model predictive control to solve its local problem based on locally available data and the global solution can be acquired with agents' cooperation.Furthermore,a filtering method for control variable and constraint set is employed,and linear programming method is used in every varying receding-horizon.The data for next varying receding-horizon control can be acquired from the measured data of the real power grid.Simulation results of IEEE 118-bus system verify the fleetness and efficiency of this method.

Abstract:Cascading failures are one of the main reasons for blackouts in electrical power grids. Stable power supply requires a robust design of the power grid topology. Currently, the impact of the grid structure on the grid robustness is mainly assessed by purely topological metrics, that fail to capture the fundamental properties of the electrical power grids such as power flow allocation according to Kirchhoff's laws. This paper deploys the effective graph resistance as a metric to relate the topology of a grid to its robustness against cascading failures. Specifically, the effective graph resistance is deployed as a metric for network expansions (by means of transmission line additions) of an existing power grid. Four strategies based on network properties are investigated to optimize the effective graph resistance, accordingly to improve the robustness, of a given power grid at a low computational complexity. Experimental results suggest the existence of Braess's paradox in power grids: bringing an additional line into the system occasionally results in decrease of the grid robustness. This paper further investigates the impact of the topology on the Braess's paradox, and identifies specific sub-structures whose existence results in Braess's paradox. Careful assessment of the design and expansion choices of grid topologies incorporating the insights provided by this paper optimizes the robustness of a power grid, while avoiding the Braess's paradox in the system.

Abstract:Cascading failure models are important for understanding the mechanism of blackouts and evaluating the control strategies to prevent the failure propagation. The evolution of cascading failure in actual power grid is a continuous dynamic process triggered by discrete events, such as initial disturbances and physical responses. In this paper, we develop an event-triggered hybrid system model to describe the dynamic process of cascading failure. In the model, the evolution of continuous states of power grid is described by differential algebraic equations and the discrete events are defined as transitions between discrete states of power grid. The model also integrates multiple physical responses including relay protection, frequency regulation and dispatching action. Based on the developed model, we propose an event-triggered simulation method of cascading failure to accelerate the simulation process. Compared with the DC power flow model, hidden failure model and topological model, the simulation results of our model are more accurate because the statistical distribution of demand loss in our model is closer to historical blackouts data. The efficiency of the proposed event-triggered method is demonstrated by comparing our model with the time-driven model and three existing models. The experimental results show that our model can trade off the simulation accuracy and time consumption. Note to Practitioners —This paper focuses on modeling the dynamic process of cascading failure with multiple physical responses in power grid. We develop an event-triggered hybrid system model for cascading failure. In the model, the continuous dynamics of power grid and discrete events triggering the evolution of cascading failure are all described by the framework of hybrid system, which is a good example of modeling the hybrid system for automation researchers and engineers. By this way, the model is more accurate in describing the actual characteristics of cascading failure in power grid, and thus supporting the design and evaluation of control strategies for improving the stability of power grid. Based on the developed model, we propose an event-triggered simulation method of cascading failure, which aims to improve simulation accuracy while potentially reducing time consumption. In practice, the model can make fast control strategies to prevent the failure propagation.
