Abstract:The expected value for the weighted crossing number of a randomly weighted graph is studied. A variation of the Crossing Lemma for expectations is proved. We focus on the case where the edge-weights are independent random variables that are uniformly distributed on [0,1].

Abstract:We consider the number of crossings in a random embedding of a graph, $G$, with vertices in convex position. We give explicit formulas for the mean and variance of the number of crossings as a function of various subgraph counts of $G$. Using Stein's method and size-bias coupling, we prove an upper bound on the Kolmogorov distance between the distribution of the number of crossings and a standard normal random variable. As an application, we establish central limit theorems, along with convergence rates, for the number of crossings in random matchings, path graphs, cycle graphs, and the disjoint union of triangles.

Abstract:In spatial networks vertices are arranged in some space and edges may cross. When arranging vertices in a 1-dimensional lattice edges may cross when drawn above the vertex sequence as it happens in linguistic and biological networks. Here we investigate the general of problem of the distribution of edge crossings in random arrangements of the vertices. We generalize the existing formula for the expectation of this number in random linear arrangements of trees to any network and derive an expression for the variance of the number of crossings in an arbitrary layout relying on a novel characterization of the algebraic structure of that variance in an arbitrary space. We provide compact formulae for the expectation and the variance in complete graphs, complete bipartite graphs, cycle graphs, one-regular graphs and various kinds of trees (star trees, quasi-star trees and linear trees). In these networks, the scaling of expectation and variance as a function of network size is asymptotically power-law-like in random linear arrangements. Our work paves the way for further research and applications in 1-dimension or investigating the distribution of the number of crossings in lattices of higher dimension or other embeddings.

A [math]-page book drawing of a graph [math] is a drawing of [math] on [math] halfplanes with a line [math] as a common boundary such that the vertices are located on [math] and the edges cannot cross [math]. The [math]-page book crossing number of the graph [math], denoted by [math], is the minimum number of edge-crossings over all [math]-page book drawings of [math]. This paper improves previous results on [math]-page book crossing numbers of the complete graph [math]. We determine [math] whenever [math] and improve the lower bounds on [math] for all [math]. Our proofs rely on bounding the number of edges in convex geometric graphs with few crossings per edge.

Abstract:We consider the number of edge crossings in a random graph drawing generated by projecting a random geometric graph on some compact convex set $W\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 3$, onto a plane. The positions of these crossings form the support of a point process. We show that if the expected number of crossings converges to a positive but finite value, this point process converges to a Poisson point process in the Kantorovich-Rubinstein distance. We further show a multivariate central limit theorem between the number of crossings and a second variable called the stress that holds when the expected vertex degree in the random geometric graph converges to a positive finite value.

Abstract:The crossing number of a graph $G$, ${\mbox{cr}}(G)$, is the minimum number of crossings, the pair-crossing number, ${\mbox{pcr}}(G)$, is the minimum number of pairs of crossing edges over all drawings of $G$. In this note we show that ${\mbox{cr}}(G)=O({\mbox{pcr}}(G)^{3/2}\log{\mbox{pcr}}(G))$, which is an improvement of the result of Matou\v{s}ek, by a log factor.
An algorithm for estimating the crossing number of dense graphs, and continuous analogs of the crossing and rectilinear crossing numbers

Abstract:We present a deterministic $n^{2+o(1)}$-time algorithm that approximates the crossing number of any graph $G$ of order $n$ up to an additive error of $o(n^4)$. We also provide a randomized polynomial time algorithm that constructs a drawing of $G$ with $\text{cr}(G)+o(n^4)$ crossings. These results imply a $1+o(1)$ approximation algorithm for the crossing number of dense graphs. Our work builds on a technique used Fox, Pach and Súk~\cite{approximatingrect}, who obtained similar results for the rectilinear crossing number. The results in~\cite{approximatingrect} and in this paper imply that the (normalized) crossing and rectilinear crossing numbers are estimable parameters. Motivated by this, we introduce two graphon parameters, the \textit{crossing density} and the \textit{rectilinear crossing density}, and then we prove that, in a precise sense, these are the correct continuous analogs of the crossing and rectilinear crossing numbers of graphs.

Abstract:Let be a set of four points chosen independently, uniformly at random from a square. Join every pair of points of with a straight line segment. Color these edges red if they have positive slope and blue, otherwise. We show that the probability that defines a pair of crossing edges of the same color is equal to . This is connected to a recent result of Aichholzer et al. [1] who showed that by 2-colouring the edges of a geometric graph and counting monochromatic crossings instead of crossings, the number of crossings can be more than halved. Our result shows that for the described random drawings, there is a coloring of the edges such that the number of monochromatic crossings is in expectation of the total number of crossings.

Abstract:Drawing a graph in a way that minimizes the number of edge-crossings is a well-studied problem. Recently there has been work characterizing both the minimum and maximum number of edge-crossings possible in various graph classes, assuming rectilinear (straightline) edges. In this paper, we investigate the algorithmic problem of maximizing the number of edge-crossings over all rectilinear drawings a graph. We show that this problem is NP-hard and lies in there exists R. We give a non-trivial derandomization of the natural randomized 1/3-approximation algorithm, which generalizes to a weighted setting as well as to an ordering constraint satisfaction problem. We evaluate these algorithms and other heuristics in simulation.

Abstract:The study of crossing probabilities - i.e. probabilities of existence of paths crossing rectangles - has been at the heart of the theory of two-dimensional percolation since its beginning. They may be used to prove a number of results on the model, including speed of mixing, tails of decay of the connectivity probabilities, scaling relations, etc. In this article, we develop a renormalization scheme for crossing probabilities in the two-dimensional random-cluster model. The outcome of the process is a precise description of an alternative between four behaviors: - Subcritical: Crossing probabilities, even with favorable boundary conditions, converge exponentially fast to 0. - Supercritical: Crossing probabilities, even with unfavorable boundary conditions, converge exponentially fast to 1. - Critical discontinuous: Crossing probabilities converge to 0 exponentially fast with unfavorable boundary conditions and to 1 with favorable boundary conditions. - Critical continuous: Crossing probabilities remain bounded away from 0 and 1 uniformly in the boundary conditions. The approach does not rely on self-duality, enabling it to apply in a much larger generality, including the random-cluster model on arbitrary graphs with sufficient symmetry, but also other models like certain random height models.

Abstract:Abstract The crossing number of a graph G is the minimum number of edge crossings over all drawings of G in the plane. A graph G is k -crossing-critical if its crossing number is at least k , but if we remove any edge of G , its crossing number drops below k . There are examples of k -crossing-critical graphs that do not have drawings with exactly k crossings. Richter and Thomassen proved in 1993 that if G is k -crossing-critical, then its crossing number is at most $$2.5\, k+16$$ 2.5 k + 16 . We improve this bound to $$2k+8\sqrt{k}+47$$ 2 k + 8 k + 47 .

Abstract:We consider the infinite directed graph with vertices the set of integers ...,-2,-1,0,1,2,... . Let v be a random variable taking either finite values or value "minus infinity". Consider random weights v(j,k), indexed by pairs (j,k) of integers with j<k, and assume that they are i.i.d. copies of v. The set of edges of the graph is the set (j,k), j<k. A path in the graph from vertex j to vertex k, j<k, is a finite sequence of edges (j(0), j(1)), (j(1), j(2)), ..., (j(m-1), j(m)) with j(0)=j and j(m)=j; the weight of this path is taken to be the sum v(j(0),j(1))+v(j(1),j(2))+...+v(j(m-1),j(m)) of the weights of its edges. Let w(0,n) be the maximal weight of all paths from 0 to n. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the sequence w(0,n), n=1, 2, ..., as n tends to infinity, under the assumptions that P(v>0)>0, the conditional distribution of v, given v>0, is not degenerate, and that E exp(Cv) is finite, for some C>0. We derive local limit theorems in the normal and moderate large deviations regimes in the case where v has an arithmetic distribution. Improving the Crossing Lemma by Characterizing Dense 2-Planar and 3-Planar Graphs

Abstract:The classical Crossing Lemma by Ajtai et al.~and Leighton from 1982 gave an important lower bound of $c \frac{m^3}{n^2}$ for the number of crossings in any drawing of a given graph of $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. The original value was $c= 1/100$, which then has gradually been improved. Here, the bounds for the density of $k$-planar graphs played a central role. Our new insight is that for $k=2,3$ the $k$-planar graphs have substantially fewer edges if specific local configurations that occur in drawings of $k$-planar graphs of maximum density are forbidden. Therefore, we are able to derive better bounds for the crossing number $\text{cr}(G)$ of a given graph $G$. In particular, we achieve a bound of $\text{cr}(G) \ge \frac{37}{9}m-\frac{155}{9}(n-2)$ for the range of $5n < m \le 6n$, while our second bound $\text{cr}(G) \ge 5m - \frac{203}{9}(n-2)$ is even stronger for larger $m>6n$. For $m > 6.77n$, we finally apply the standard probabilistic proof from the BOOK and obtain an improved constant of $c>1/27.48$ in the Crossing Lemma. Note that the previous constant was $1/29$. Although this improvement is not too impressive, we consider our technique as an important new tool, which might be helpful in various other applications.

Fast calculation of the variance of edge crossings in random arrangements

Abstract:The crossing number of a graph $G$, $\mathrm{cr}(G)$, is the minimum number of edge crossings arising when drawing a graph on a certain surface. Determining $\mathrm{cr}(G)$ is a problem of great importance in Graph Theory. Its maximum variant, i.e. the maximum crossing number, $\mathrm{max-cr}(G)$, is receiving growing attention. Instead of an optimization problem on the number of crossings, here we consider the variance of the number of edge crossings, when embedding the vertices of an arbitrary graph uniformly at random in some space. In his pioneering research, Moon derived this variance on random linear arrangements of complete unipartite and bipartite graphs. Given the need of efficient algorithms to support this sort of research and given also the growing interest of the number of edge crossings in spatial networks, networks where vertices are embedded in some space, here we derive an algorithm to calculate the variance in arbitrary graphs in time $o(nm^2)$ that we transform into one that runs in time $O(nm)$ by reusing computations. We also derive one for forests that runs in time $O(n)$. These algorithms work on a wide range of random layouts (not only on Moon's) and are based on novel arithmetic expressions for the calculation of the variance that we develop from previous theoretical work. This paves the way for many applications that rely on a fast but exact calculation of the variance.

Counting the Number of Minimal Paths in Weighted Coloured-Edge Graphs

Abstract:A weighted coloured-edge graph is a graph for which each edge is assigned both a positive weight and a discrete colour, and can be used to model transportation and computer networks in which there are multiple transportation modes. In such a graph paths are compared by their total weight in each colour, resulting in a Pareto set of minimal paths from one vertex to another. This paper will give a tight upper bound on the cardinality of a minimal set of paths for any weighted coloured-edge graph. Additionally, a bound is presented on the expected number of minimal paths in weighted bicoloured-edge graphs.

Subcritical annulus crossing in spatial random graphs

Abstract:We consider general continuum percolation models obeying sparseness, translation invariance, and spatial decorrelation. In particular, this includes models constructed on general point sets other than the standard Poisson point process or the Bernoulli-percolated lattice. Moreover, in our setting the existence of an edge may depend not only on the two end vertices but also on a surrounding vertex set and models are included that are not monotone in some of their parameters. We study the critical annulus-crossing intensity $\widehat{\lambda}_{c}$, which is smaller or equal to the classical critical percolation intensity $\lambda_{c}$ and derive a condition for $\widehat{\lambda}_{c}>0$ by relating the crossing of annuli to the occurrence of long edges. This condition is sharp for models that have a modicum of independence. In a nutshell, our result states that annuli are either not crossed for small intensities or crossed by a single edge. Our proof rests on a multiscale argument that further allows us to directly describe the decay of the annulus-crossing probability with the decay of long edges probabilities. We apply our result to a number of examples from the literature. Most importantly, we extensively discuss the weight-dependent random connection model in a generalised version, for which we derive sufficient conditions for the presence or absence of long edges that are typically easy to check. These conditions are built on a decay coefficient $\zeta$ that has recently seen some attention due to its importance for various proofs of global graph properties.

Abstract:We introduce the Orchard crossing number, which is defined in a similar way to the well-known rectilinear crossing number. We compute the Orchard crossing number for some simple families of graphs. We also prove some properties of this crossing number. Moreover, we define a variant of this crossing number which is tightly connected to the rectilinear crossing number, and compute it for some simple families of graphs.

On the Uncrossed Number of Graphs

Abstract:Visualizing a graph $G$ in the plane nicely, for example, without crossings, is unfortunately not always possible. To address this problem, Masařík and Hliněný [GD 2023] recently asked for each edge of $G$ to be drawn without crossings while allowing multiple different drawings of $G$. More formally, a collection $\mathcal{D}$ of drawings of $G$ is uncrossed if, for each edge $e$ of $G$, there is a drawing in $\mathcal{D}$ such that $e$ is uncrossed. The uncrossed number $\mathrm{unc}(G)$ of $G$ is then the minimum number of drawings in some uncrossed collection of $G$. No exact values of the uncrossed numbers have been determined yet, not even for simple graph classes. In this paper, we provide the exact values for uncrossed numbers of complete and complete bipartite graphs, partly confirming and partly refuting a conjecture posed by Hliněný and Masařík. We also present a strong general lower bound on $\mathrm{unc}(G)$ in terms of the number of vertices and edges of $G$. Moreover, we prove NP-hardness of the related problem of determining the edge crossing number of a graph $G$, which is the smallest number of edges of $G$ taken over all drawings of $G$ that participate in a crossing. This problem was posed as open by Schaefer in his book [Crossing Numbers of Graphs 2018].
